History Welcome to the world of Facings of America, where we believe in inspiration, authenticity, dreams, and vision. We recognize these qualities define everything we are as a company and all that we wish for our clients. Facings of America began humbly in 1967, in a trailer in Phoenix, Arizona. The dusty, hot desert was the kind of place only a hard-working visionary could imagine grand dreams becoming reality. It was here that Dick van Gilse founded Facings of America.

Facings Circa 1967

As the years passed, Facings became the industry leader, constructive in the creation of the Ceramic Tile Distributors Association. Facings brought many tile lines to the western states and simultaneously began developing completely new materials from foreign countries and creating a market for them in the United States. We were one of the first companies to introduce stone flooring for Dick van Gilse at the factory in Italy examining the quality of the stone production.

residential applications and we continue to set the trends that have been key ingredients in Facings’ success.

2 | facingsofamerica.com

The company has flourished over the years and we have made changes, the showrooms have expanded, the products have evolved to the most current and unique, and another generation has joined the business. But some things will never change at Facings of America because we believe in the traditions and values that bring us our success.

Our Guarantee: We will always provide the highest quality products, service and buying experience for our clients. We will continue to develop and introduce new, fresh and unique products to the market. We will uphold our belief that good business is based on strong relationships; with our clients and distributors, with our employees and community, here in the U.S. and abroad. Our resource guide shows you examples of our products and, we hope, fills you with inspiration.

Fireplaces Our fireplace surrounds are beautiful. Our hand-carved travertine and limestone fireplaces stand out for their uniqueness and are works of art, while our competitors sell less expensive pre-cast, faux stone, and massproduction fireplaces. The Facings’ difference is in the details: interpreting blueprints, defining correct proportions, creating authentic designs, carving intricate details and delivering truly oneof-a-kind products.

Facings’ Private Estate Our goal is to create the most unique and satisfying buying experience in the industry. From the moment you step into one of our award-winning showrooms, you will appreciate the creative spirit and energy of our highly trained staff, coupled with the completely unique product presentation

18 | facingsofamerica.com

For over four decades, we have traveled the continents in our quest for products that support the most current design influences to display in our showrooms. We ensure our products are authentic, meet our high standards, and are the most unique in the industry. The beauty of natural stone is its shade and color variation; guaranteeing no two pieces are alike and yet distinctly attractive.

That was one

big problem off our shoulders. I have seen installations where it was impossible to coordinate logistics from just two manufacturers. Facings did an excellent job of keeping everything synchronized, which made our job easier!

Stone Tile Finishes Filled & Honed One of our most popular finishes due to its refinement and sheen that goes with any décor or style. Inclusions in the stones are filled with a color epoxy during production and the entire piece is honed creating a look between a polished and natural finish. The final product has a warm, yet soft appearance. Shown in Pietra Vecchio

Unfilled & Honed The stone is honed to just the proper sheen and texture and is suitable for most contemporary applications. This finish is usually reserved for our elite limestone collection, however it can also be used on travertine.

Shown in Apollo

Natural & Sawcut When true authenticity is required, a natural and sawcut stone will leave your project looking as if it came directly from the countryside. When the pieces are cut to size, the saw and tool marks are intentionally left on the surface of the stone in an attempt to provide some texture and a rustic appearance. The travertine inclusions will be filled in with grout during installation. Shown in Castello

Monastere™ Monastere is our signature finish, developed while trying to replicate the natural patina we found in a 100 year old wine shop in Tuscany. After years of development, we perfected the chipped edge and patina finish process that many competitors have tried to copy but have never been able to properly reproduce. Shown in Noce

All stones are not available in all finishes.

20 | facingsofamerica.com

Cobblestone This distressed edge and aged finish is best suited for providing a timeless European design influence. The stone’s edges and surfaces are distressed and softly rounded to replicate the look and feel of Pompeii, Italy.

Shown in Pietra Vecchio

Satin Our Satin finish is a spin-off of our signature Monastere finish, without the chipped edges. A natural looking patina with a softer edge appearance is perfect for an application where an ancient authenticity is desired, but smaller and more consistent grout joints are preferred.

Shown in Castello

Ancient Our newest finish for a timeless appearance, the stone is specially worked and processed to produce an exclusive warm and worn in feel with softer edges.

Shown in Bruno Corteccia

Centurian We created this unique blend of finishes to give the stone the stunning appearance of a reclaimed, centuries old floor. The stone goes through many processes to achieve this classic finish and is limited to a few stone selections to maintain the integrity of the look.

Travertine Collection Travertine is limestone, which over time, through geological shifting, found its way deep into the Earth. As the water melted after the Ice Age it found its way into the earth’s underground aquifer system, which we use today for our wells and water supplies, and was absorbed by the limestone beds. Heated by the Earth's inner core, the water rose as steam and hot pressurized water to form mud baths, and geysers such as "Old Faithful." The rising hot water disolved the limestone and brought with it granules from below. The mud beds then cooled and crystallized into solid stone called travertine. The inclusions in the stone are created from the natural passage of the water

Limestone Collection Limestone and marble start from the same basic materials. Marble is simply changed limestone. Limestone is the result of millions of years of sea shells and sea creature bones settling on an ocean floor and transforming into calcium carbonate. Only 3% of the stone makes up the color, with most color coming from the other natural elements that combine with the stone when the stone is formed (i.e. iron deposits which can give a reddish brown color). Given enough heat and pressure, limestone crystallizes and becomes marble. The crystallization allows the stone to take a polish during finishing, which brings out the rich colors we associate with marble. Limestone which is not crystallized will not accept a polish and therefore is only available in a natural or

Modellata Planking shown with Italian terracotta

Our exclusive Modellata Planking replicates this real-wood and stone installation without the complicated maintenance associated with the combination of these two materials and requires only a tile contractor to install.

Due to the exclusive and valuable nature of Modellata Planking, it is only available for purchase with our flooring materials.

A Facings Exclusive! An application integrating stone and wood has always been desired by many of our clients, and yet usually discouraged by the industry because of the incompatibility of the two materials in terms of both maintenance and installation. Facings spent years developing a solution to this challenge, and its name is Modellata Planking. We personally selected several genuine 100-year-old wood planking pieces. Then we replicated and produced them in a water friendly resin. The finished product is an authentic looking stone/wood combination that we have created specifically for you, our client.

California Arts & Crafts Collection: These handsome tiles were inspired by the art pottery and ceramic tiles produced during the California Arts & Crafts movement, from the mid-1890s through the 1930s. A principal tenet of the movement was the belief that the union of hand, head, and heart in handcraft yielded therapeutic value.

Purchasing Guide Architectural Feature™ Stone Finish Options Natural & Lightly Sandblasted This rustic finish leaves behind saw and tool marks with the harsher accents being smoothed through a traditional sandblasting process.

Shown in Albastrino

Unfilled & Brushed The small holes and inclusions are left unfilled and a special hand worked process softens the look by replicating a time-worn patina and removing most of the saw and tool marks leaving behind a slight sheen to the feature.

Shown in Pietra di Bourgogne

Sandblasted with the recesses bush-hammered The finish leaves behind saw and tool marks with the harsher accents being smoothed through a traditional sandblasting process. The recesses are then specially treated through a bush-hammering process that helps to create contrast between the Architectural Feature’s surface and its recessed carvings. Shown in Albastrino

Filled & Honed A filled and honed process will fill most of the inclusions with a similar-in-color epoxy filler. The stone is then treated with special abrasives to bring the stone to a honed finish. Please note that stone recesses or carvings are usually not filled or honed to help create contrast between the stone surface and the carving details. Shown in Pietra Vecchio

All stones are not available in all finishes.

Cement-filled & Brushed The travertine inclusions are filled with a cementatious filling. While wet, the stone and fill are brushed providing an exclusive and unique finish to your Architectural Features. The softer areas of the stone and the fill are worn in.

Shown in Castello

Bush-hammered, Sandblasted & Acid-washed This genuine finish creates an antiquated look making it appear as if it were reclaimed from a centuries old mansion. Our special stone processing and color enhancements create realistic details that normally take years to produce.
