A MESSAGE FROM OUR

STATE TEAM June and the winter chills have arrived! It is hard to believe that just two weekends ago we were in the Tropical North Region enjoying amazing sunshine at the official opening of Garradunga. It was a glorious day, Guides of all ages and stages - laughing, playing, cooking smores, climbing the new equipment, singing and eating. Carol Lincoln, quite rightly, was a very happy Region Manager, very proud of her team and the range of extremely well organised activities for the opening. Local Councillors, and the Queensland State Treasurer - Curtis Pitt also joined in the celebration. One of my very favourite parts was the return bus ride from Cairns to Garradunga with the Guides! Thank you in particular to Leaders, Debra Jakes and Annette Lonsdale, for your excellent company and good conversation on the bus ride. And as for the ukulele led Trefoil Songbirds – what can I say. Your singing is only trumped by your good conversation and excellent company. Thank you to every Leader, parent and supporter – it was such a happy day in the sun! The day was a great visible Page 4 Queensland on the Go July 2016

reminder of what Guiding achieves - happy, self-confident, respectful girls and young women strengthening our communities. Bravo Tropical North! The election of our new Board – the first Board to work under the new Constitution! By now, you will have received your voting package for the Board election. We have received seven great applications for the six Board positions. Please consider each candidate carefully. Voting closes 22 July. The new Board will be announced at the special State Council meeting on 29 July. It is hard to believe the amount of work still required including the long nights associated with ensuring all is in place for 1 August for the new Board, Constitution and supporting policies and procedures to be in place. It is as exciting as it is exhausting! A huge ongoing thank you to those responsible for ensuring the work continually progresses. It is so important that GGQ has a strong framework in place to support and govern our state.

It is really important to me that you, our Members and parents, fully understand what the changes are to our Constitution and most importantly what the new governance means. My intention is to visit each Region to explain in person, or via other means such as SKYPE, webinar or teleconference. I am looking forward to those discussions. Our annual Awards night at Government House is on Friday 4 July. It is such a special occasion to honour and acknowledge both our new Queen’s Guides and those Leaders who have gone above and beyond. Sadly, one of our Leaders Cathy Shellshear will be honoured posthumously with the Star of Merit. It has been such a sad time over recent months for some of our Guiding families with the loss of their family members and our Guiding sisters. Our heartfelt wishes are with each of you and your families. Our Archives is moving! Archives will have a new home at the Brisbane North Huxtable hut. This has been made possible by the generosity of Brisbane North Region and Peggy Campbell. Bravo Brisbane North. Please spare a thought for Jill Hogrefe (principal archivist) who is feverishly packing our precious memories. Bravo Jill! Our theme for the year is ‘connect’. There have been some great connections for Guides, unable to continue in their Units at the present time, who have happily transferred to Lone Guides! Well done to the Leaders involved. Please remember we have this great alternative Lone Guides available.

Our 2016 State Good Turn is to aid drought affected areas of Queensland. We have partnered with the Queensland Country Women’s Association to raise $30,000 for these families. Currently, we have $1,000 only registered. The simple fact is these families need money. They already receive lots of wellintentioned charity packs, but it is money to buy food, money to clothe their kids, money to buy stock for their animals and the money spent helps their community (businesses) survive! Please do what you can to generate fundraising in your Regions and Districts to help us achieve our goal. See suggested activities in the State Good Turn article in each issue of Queensland on the Go. SCROGGIN! 30 September through to Monday 3 October will soon be here. A kaleidoscope of fun and adventure is planned. One registration price will cover all events except for the offsite expeditions and excursions. You can register online from Friday 8 July. This fun event is all about Leaders participation in activities without the responsibility of their girls. Heather Pettigrew is our Ringmaster for the event – so you know you are in for a good time! We have interstate Leaders facilitating activities. I will be donning the outdoor apron to lead one of the outdoor cooking sessions damper and scones in foil lined boxes… come and join me! SCROGGIN – lock in the dates! Laughter, learning, campfires and camaraderie!

"Children are great imitators. So lets give them something great to imitate!" Yours in Guiding

NATIONAL TEAM REPORT

The State Girl Guide Organisations have been holding their AGMs over the past few months. These important meetings include the adoption of the Annual and Financial reports and are an opportunity for members to hear about the successes of the previous year and the extent to which the organisation has achieved its strategic goals. We encourage you to take the time to read your State’s Annual Report which you will find on your State website, and also the GGA Annual Report on the GGA website. On behalf of Girl Guides Australia, we are pleased to welcome Sarah Neill as the new State Commissioner for Girl Guides NSW/ACT. We are very grateful to Elizabeth Starr for her committed leadership of her State and for the valuable contribution she has made as a member of the Australian Guiding Committee. What version of Guide Lines are you currently using? Do you know that you will find the most up to date version online these days? The work to create this online portal is a way in which GGA ensures that we best support our Leaders by providing easily accessible and current information. There is a feedback button for any comments, as we would love to hear how you think we can make it as useful and easy as possible. Have you visited it yet? http://guidelinesforgirlguides.org.au. Just prior to the Federal Government going into Caretaker mode, Robinette and Kit met with members of staff from the offices of various Ministers at Parliament House in Canberra. As a result of this visit, Girl Guides Australia is very excited to report the receipt of funding from the Federal Government to continue the work on Voices against Violence which will see the first of the pilot programs commence in selected states. This project plays a vital role in helping us to maintain our relevance to the girls and young women in our movement. Page 6 Queensland on the Go July 2016

As we write this, two young women have just returned from Ghana where they took part in the 2016 Juliette Lowe Seminar at Kusafari. JLS, as it is commonly referred to, is a project based international event for 18 – 25 year olds. We look forward to hearing the results of the work on projects Emma and Kate have undertaken. The 12th Asia Pacific Regional Conference will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal this year, between 28 August and 3 September, with the theme “Hamro Danphe Connect, Growth, Impact”. The Australian delegation of Robinette Emonson, Kate Moore, Dani Smith, Holly Bracken and Emily Milton Smith will be keeping us all informed through the GGA website, Facebook and Twitter. Additional information can be found on the WAGGGS Asia Pacific website. The delegation is enormously grateful to those Units and Trefoil Guilds who have provided goods for the market stall. Finally, we want to thank everyone involved in making our 2016 Girl Guide Biscuit Campaign such a huge success. From our competition winners through to the National and State office organisers and the Managers, Leaders, support groups, parents and Guides, congratulations on your efforts which have once again raised the profile of Girl Guiding in your local area and across all of Australia. GGA National Team Robinette Emonson, Susan Campbell, Miranda Cummings With Thanks Given the overwhelming number of flowers, cards, emails and expressions of condolence sent to me and my family on the passing of my husband Bob, please accept this as my personal thanks. I am humbled and gain strength from the amount of love, care and support provided by my Guiding ‘family’. Robinette Emonson

UNIFORM PRICE INCREASE

From Friday 1 July 2016, there will be an increase in the cost of some of the items in our uniform range. This is the first increase in the price of our uniform since Guiding introduced the new uniform in 2010. The increase is required due to increasing costs in materials, manufacturing and transport and has been negotiated with our uniform supplier. These changes have the support of Girl Guides Australia and have been applied across all States around Australia. We thank our Girl Guides, Volunteers, Members and Supporters in the community for their ongoing support to Girl Guiding across Australia and their understanding of this change. GONE HOME It has been a very sad and tragic month for three families in our Guiding Community. Let us keep these families close to our hearts and in our prayers. Linda Arthur Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast Region Linda Arthur was dedicated to Girl Guides. Her commitment was lifelong, beginning when she became a Girl Guide in Inala at the age of 7. Linda renewed her Promise as an adult in 1989 and was initially a Leader at The Gap for 4 years before being appointed as Ranger Guide Leader and Guide Unit Leader at Palm Beach. Linda held a number of consultant positions on the Gold Coast Region team including; Adventurous Activities, Youth Leadership and Awards. Linda was involved in running Region and arts camps and trainings for Guides and Leaders. She was a Learning Partner and Program consultant in partnership with her daughter Karen. She also assisted in the revival and production of the Region newsletter, Chatter. Linda’s involvement was acknowledged with a Region Good Service Award in 2000 and a Wattle Award in 2012. Linda gained her 20 yearlong service bar in 2011. It is an impressive achievement.

Jess Warner Weipa District / Tropical North Region Jess Warner, Unit Leader for Weipa Guides was dedicated to her family and community as in her own words: I became a Girl Guide Leader to learn new skills, get involved in my community and provide a service for young girls who normally would not have these opportunities in a small remote town. Jess is responsible for getting Girl Guides restarted in Weipa which is now a thriving District. Jess received the Boronia Award in 2012. Jess provided the inspiration for friend Jane Gordon to attempt to swim the English Channel solo in July. Jane’s is swimming to raise funds for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation and a raise awareness of brain cancer. You can follow her journey on www.swimming4jess.com. A memorial service was held in Weipa with the Weipa Top Ender Guides singing and giving Jess a Bravo.

Cathy Shellshear Browns Plains District / Southern Cross Region Cathy became a Guide Leader in 2002, and over time Guiding became her great passion. Her love of camping was well known. Once Cathy achieved her first aid and camping qualifications, the District was able to enjoy the great outdoors under her Leadership. Cathy received the Banksia Award in 2009, Long Service Award in 2007 and the Star of Merit in 2015. Cathy’s family will receive The Star of Merit certificate at the Government House Award ceremony in July this year. Cathy was an inspiration to all who knew her. STATE GOOD TURN 2016 In 2016 Girl Guides Queensland (GGQ) is partnering with the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) to assist our sisters and their families in drought affected areas. In this spirit our State Good Turn for 2016 is:

Fundraising to Aid Drought affected Areas of Queensland We have a fundraising target of $30,000 - a very achievable goal if you think that this equals to only $5 to be raised by each member. Please encourage all Units and Districts to fundraise and raise awareness for their State Good Turn service. For ideas for fundraising please go to the Girl Guides Queensland website: guidesqld.org/grantsandfundraising The fine print The QCWA has an established Public Rural Crises Fund to aid families in crisis after a natural disaster. It is the QCWA who assess the need and GGQ assures you the money stays in the community in the form of grocery vouchers, store credit or payments of accounts. When GGQ donates your money to this Fund 100% of your gift goes directly to helping families recover, rebuild and get ahead. Please follow these directions as your Unit and District raise money and Girl Guides Queensland will forward your donations every month.

OUR GOAL!

$30 000

Selected Regions will be appearing in every Queensland on the Go. Each Region will provide activity and program ideas to support this year’s State Good Turn. Download them at guidesqld.org/stategoodturn Brisbane North Region Create a sand timer to encourage shorter showers. A water conservation idea that also uses recycled materials. You will need: • Two matching plastic bottles with large lids (such as 750ml juice bottles Hint: The larger based bottles make more stable timers. • Superglue • Drill with a small/medium-sized drill-bit (and adult help) • Heavy duty tape • Sand • Stop watch What to do: 1. Ensure the sand is very dry. Spread it out on a baking tray in the sun for an hour, or bake on a low heat 2. Remove the bottle lids and glue the flat sides firmly together. Leave to dry. 3. Drill a hole in the centre of the lids. (this is where your adult can help)

4. Fill one bottle with sand (bottle A), replace the lid assembly, then loosely attach the other bottle (bottle B). 5. Invert, then carefully time two minutes as you let the sand flow from bottle A to bottle B. At the two minute mark quickly remove bottle B. 6. Bottle B should now have two minutes worth of sand inside. Tip out the remaining excess sand from bottle A. 7. Firmly reattach bottle A and B, and then test again to ensure it is reasonably accurate as a two minute timer. Make adjustments to the sand volume as necessary. 8. Reinforce the join with duct tape. 9. Place near the shower and use it to keep your showers short. Can you beat the timer? For fun: add glitter, use coloured sand, decorate your bottles.

STAY CONNECTED QUEENSLAND!

In the spirit of our State theme - Stay Connected Queensland! We would love to hear about what you are doing in your Unit. Please email [email protected] and Stay Connected with your Guiding Sisters in Queensland!

AITKENVALE RANGERS GET CREATIVE Our Ranger Guides very proudly painted banners and signs and put up bunting and posters in a huge effort to fill the flat-bed of a semi-trailer for the Townsville Pacific Festival Parade. They used recycled plastic and dusted off blue and gold bunting, that was last used for the bicentennial display in 1988! I received many comments from the public exclaiming what a marvellous job they did as one of the few entrants who produced and displayed hand work of arts and crafts. Irene Burrows, Aitkenvale District Manager

WEAVING BAGS FROM COCONUT PALMS By Debra Jakes (Freshwater Guides) In May, members of the New Britain Community of Far North Queensland ran a weaving activity for our Unit. All the Guides worked hard having a go at weaving coconut palm bags. The Unit had collected donations and proudly presented it to the New Britain Community afterwards. The New Britain Community motto: Reaching out to the community and celebrating life in our tropical paradise was definently upheld and enjoyed during this fun-filled evening. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE YOUR PATROL OR UNIT IN THE QOTG? The Guide Magazine designed just for you! Everyone in Queensland will read about what amazing things you are doing. It can be one sentence, or a whole story, a photo, your Unit’s favourite campfire song, even the activities you have planned to get that badge you want. We would love to hear from you. Please email [email protected].

Albany Creek Guides needed a new State flag. We were able to get in contact with our local MP for Everton, Mr Mander, and request a new State flag by simply e-mailing the Everton Electoral Office and stating what we wanted. Within a day, the Electoral Office had responded with the news that Mr Mander will order one for us. And on 31 May, after two weeks of waiting, Tim Mander visited the Albany Creek Girl Guide Hut and presented us with our new Queensland State Flag.

Hamilton Clayfield Brownie Guides showed top teamwork and friendly fun by working together to build houses out of paper, and lots of tape! Annabel (bottom left) adds the finishing touches on the house.

Gympie District and Gympie Ohana Rangers embrace the Community Spirit Cent Auction Gympie District had a HUGELY successful fundraiser with their 2016 Cent Auction. The awesome support from donor businesses, organisations and individuals filled the Gympie Hockey Club with over 200 people. Leaders, parents and Guides all worked together tirelessly to make the night a success. Jamie Dunn was our celebrity MC once again, and Agro made an appearance after the prize draws. A shout out to our own Ohana Ranger Guides who worked all day to load vehicles, set up the room, run the barbecue, act as Cent Auction runners and then pack everything up at the end! We ran out of chairs and food with the overwhelming community support so next year we'll be sourcing an even bigger, better venue. The funds raised go towards the District Support Group and preparing for the 2018 Jamboree.

Girl Guides Queensland

Women of Substance Women of Substance (WofS) has been a quiet but very much loved part of Girl Guides Queensland for almost three decades, and over the last few years it has worn a few different hats. Now, with a lot of hard work by a really great team, the Women of Substance Program has been re-born – and we have lots to tell you!

As part of the WofS initiative we are able to experience adult Guiding, contribute ideas and participate in programs that educate, inform, inspire and support other young women – without necessarily having to take on a traditional leadership role .

What and Who Are WofS?

The WofS Team coordinates a series of events each year, including a partnership with Westpac to provide a fantastic financial literacy program to young women. A highlight are the Mentoring Breakfasts for year 10 & 11 girls from local schools. Members of the community are invited to share their professional experiences with participating students to assist with their career development. A great opportunity for us to also show students and their teachers exactly how great Guiding is!

The Women of Substance (WofS) program was formed by an extraordinary group of Guiding friends in 1988, to extend the Guiding spirit into another community area. Through their influential network, their vision, courage and hard work, these exceptional women raised funds for their beloved organisation. Whilst raising the profile of Guiding externally. Barbara Taylor Bradford, a former brownie and Guide, and well-known author of the book “A Woman of Substance,” was delighted to give her support by providing the title of her acclaimed novel to Girl Guides Queensland to use for their program. Inspired by the vision that the original founders held, today’s Women of Substance continue to be role models, advocates and supporters of girls and young women in the wider community. In the same way the Olave Program is a community for Guides between the ages of 18 and 30, WofS today provides a platform for women over 30. WofS are for women who want to get together, network and have fun, through activities that actively promote Guiding and help fundraise for Girl Guides Queensland.

Page 14 Queensland on the Go July 2016

Mentoring

In April, we had the pleasure of hosting 40 mentors and students for a (really delicious!) breakfast at the Parliamentary Annexe in Brisbane with Di Farmer MP as our guest speaker – a great advocate of GGQ. Planning for another of these hugely successful breakfasts is underway for this year and we know the schools are already looking forward to it. WofS Corporate A huge part of the WofS program is our alignment with the corporate world. Partnering with corporate women we are able to build lasting relationships whilst advocating the great benefits of Guiding.

ARCHIVES NEEDS YOUR HELP We are looking for a copy of Coo-ee April 1967 to complete our online collection of all Coo-ee issues. Can you help?

These corporate relationships then provide an opportunity for a young woman to gain career advice and support in her chosen field, inviting businesses to sponsor various fundraising initiatives, and allowing another avenue to gain membership for some women who thought they didn’t have “time” for Guiding. The WofS Foundation We are still in the early stages of forming the WofS Foundation, the fundraising arm of the WofS Program. With a projectbased approach to fundraising, Women of Substance will provide an additional income stream for GGQ and we hope to share our first update with you in next month’s QOTG! And finally: We are thrilled to share with you that the WofS team has a new member this month. Wendy Hall has joined us as the WofS Corporate Liaison Officer (an internal project team role), helping us to source mentors and other opportunities from across the State. We are really pleased to have Wendy on board and look forward to sharing more updates with you as we gain momentum together. If you would like to know more about WofS or have a question for the team, please email us at [email protected] and watch this space for our updates!

Please remember: If you have any copies of Coo-ee or would be willing to copy or scan them for Girl Guides Queensland Archives we would warmly welcome them. WofS - Where did it all begin? Joan McGuigan an employee of Girl Guides Queensland in the 1980s first proposed the idea of WofS to a group of Guiding friends. Here is Joan’s personal account: While visiting Janette Lockhart-Gibson’s home and thinking of the book I had just finished reading, “A Woman of Substance” by Barbara Taylor Bradford, I proposed my idea. Wouldn’t it good if we could get 100 women of substance to form a group to be mentors to girls and enjoy breakfasts? Janette thought it was a brilliant idea. After confirming with Barbara Taylor Bradford that the title of her book was free to use, we initiated the group. The first person I interviewed for membership was Leneen Forde (Governor of Queensland). Leneen agreed to be a member immediately and suggested several other candidates for membership. When Barbara visited Australia in she came to a WofS breakfast and received a memento brooch. Temporary storage of mannequins wanted The GQ Archive will be relocated to West Chermside soon. Care with handling the mannequins is a concern so storage for a couple of months is requested. Can you help? A spare room, a space in your garage? Please help the Archives and email Jill at [email protected] or phone 0421 062 549. Jill Hogrefe [email protected]

LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT KATHY NEEHOUSE [email protected]

It has come to my attention that there is some confusion about the role of Learning Partner and District Manager as a new Leader progresses towards her Leader Qualification. The Learning Partner signs off the Leadership Qualification passport and then her work with the Leader is complete.

A Manager’s role is to complete the Induction and to appoint (or confirm) the Learning Partner. She is also responsible for signing-off some module activities and should generally oversee that the process between the Learning Partner and new Leader / Manager is working well. Who oversees the Leader qualification process:

The Passport Guidance notes available to ALL members on the GGA website make it quite clear.

ʞʞ The District Manager oversees the qualification process for Assistant Unit Leaders and Unit Leaders in her District. She also oversees the qualification process for the Outdoors Leaders appointed to her District.

www.girlguides.org.au/leaders-and-volunteers/ australian-learning-qualification-program.html Here is a summary from the Guidance notes.

ʞʞ In the case of an Outdoors Leader who will be working with the Region, the Region Manager is responsible for overseeing the process.

The District Manager is responsible for appointing the newly Qualified Leader.

Who can be the Learning Partner: ʞʞ The District Manager of a new Leader can not be their Learning Partner, as they have to oversee the whole process. ʞʞ If there is no District Manager, the Region Manager should make the appointment, and this is the simplest way to get around the problem in remote areas. ʞʞ Another option is to get a member of the training team to be the Learning Partner. ʞʞ Creativity in submitting evidence of passport activities is encouraged including third party evidence eg from Guides or other Leaders, and the appropriate qualified Leader, Learning Partner or District Manager can sign as per the requirements. ʞʞ If there is an 'exceptional circumstance', then this should be discussed with the State L&D Manager in advance.

Page 16 Queensland on the Go July 2016

ʞʞ The Region Manager oversees the qualification process for Assistant District Managers and District Managers in her Region. ʞʞ The State Commissioner oversees the qualification process for Region Managers in the State. ʞʞ The State Commissioner or Assistant State Commissioner or her nominee oversees the qualification process for Assistant Region Managers. While the Manager is one of those supporting a new Leader / Manager, she cannot be the Learning Partner for those she oversees as it is important that she maintains her independence in the process.

The Learning Partner: Either the District Manager or Region Manager appoints the Learning Partner. The Learning Partner’s overall goal is to ensure the Leader / Manager becomes an integrated, confident, skilled and knowledgeable member of the District or Region team. One of the key requirements for a Learning Partner is that they hold a current primary appointment and have highly developed personal and team skills. The Learning Partner also has an important liaison role with the State Learning & Development Committee, as well as both the District and Region teams. Passport Activity signatures: For the Leadership Qualification Passports (AUL, UL, OL) ʞʞ Where qualified Leader is specified, this means a currently appointed Unit Leader, Assistant Unit Leader or Outdoors Leader. ʞʞ Where qualified Unit Leader is specified, this means only a qualified Unit Leader can sign. A qualified Manager or Resource Leader may sign Leadership Qualification Modules if she has current and substantive involvement at Unit level. PLEASE NOTE: this really applies to a Manager from another District ʞʞ enabling Leaders to gain further opportunities and verifications. ʞʞ Some activities must be signed off by either the Learning Partner or her Manager and these are clearly marked. A District Manager must oversee this process and therefore cannot sign as Learning Partner or qualified Leader.

Already the District Manager of Bayview, Alison stepped up to the dual role of District Manager to Edmonton to support the only Leader in the District. Alison, assisted the Edmonton Support Group in their PR and marketing endeavours. With a flare for design, Alison shaped fabulous posters for the Edmonton Eco Fiesta display and then ran the Unit program for a month so the sole Edmonton Leader could take a much earned break. Alison, you lead by example. Thank you for sharing your talents and abilities with Guides of the Tropical North. BRAVO! The GEM Award is awarded to an adult Member of GGQ who “Goes the Extra Mile”. Nominate a Guide Leader today by completing a GEM Nomination form (QF.AW.05) available on the GGQ website.

The District Manager The District Manager, acting in accordance with policy, has overall responsibility for Guiding in the District, including the Support Group/District Support Group. The District Manager has a good understanding of the aims and principles of Guiding and of the Australian Guide Program so has the necessary knowledge and confidence to lead the District. The position is not one of rank but of sharing, with other adults, the responsibilities and privileges of membership of a team. The District Manager needs the assistance and support of all in the District, including Leaders, Support Group and parents/care providers, to administer the District. Each adult has an important part to play in fulfilling the whole purpose of Guiding – to empower girls and young women to grow into confident, self-respecting and responsible community members. More information can be found in Hints and Guidelines for Support Groups and District Support Groups.

SUE HAWKINS

Our Trefoil Adviser is travelling north to visit some of our sister Guilds. She has been contacting them by email to arrange meetings with members along the way as she makes her way up the coast. Australia's Biggest Morning Tea has been the focus for many Guilds recently. Fraser Coast held theirs in the Urangan Shopping Centre while Sunshine Wanderers Guild held theirs at the Nambour Guide hut with a theme of "A hat with a story". The hats were many and varied as were the stories to go with them. There was an old Scout hat, lovingly kept, a few old Guide Leader hats which have been preserved and in one case, with a bunch of daffodils added to make the lady easily recognised as the Daffodil Lady delivering Cancer Council Daffodil merchandise. There was a road construction worker's hard hat which saved the man's life, a lighthouse keeper's cap, a Russian fur hat, to name just a few. What an interesting morning was had by all at their Biggest Morning Tea. Two of the Nostalgia Singers Trefoil Guild recently tried out recipes for the new Girl Guide biscuits and carefully recorded all their findings and recipes, together with photos of the results for the National Marketing Officer. It was a fun day and the results were very tasty. Below: Nostalgia Singers Dorami Keyt and Margie Reid
