PUGLIA - ON FOOT IN FORGOTTEN ITALY

Introduction The beautiful 'heel' of Italy is home to the country’s longest coastline, a spectacular 800km of breath-taking landscapes, rugged national parks, limestone cliffs, endless olive groves, remote beaches, picturesque whitewashed villages and dramatic castles. Described as the "bread basket of Italy," Puglia offers some of the country's most fantastic food and amazing wines, alongside stunning walking. We explore the region with relaxing walks, ensuring there is plenty of time to explore the beautiful towns and villages the area is famed for. After starting in the coastal town of Bari, with its old town and pretty harbour, we head to the spectacular Gargano Peninsula National Park, our base for three spectacular days of walking. Described as one of Italy’s most beautiful national parks, we'll hike along shepherd trails and pilgrimage paths to explore one of Europe’s most important sites, the isolated and striking hill-top town of Monte San Angelo. Next, the dramatic canyon of Ripe Rosse and the spectacular high cliffs of Monte Saraceno, before the striking hill-top village of Ostuni, with its enchanting labyrinth of narrow streets, beautiful white-washed architecture and far reaching sea views. A well planned free day at our mid-week base in Bari, leaves you free to discover either the fantastic UNESCO troglodyte town of Matera, a real highlight of the region or Lecce, the "Florence of Southern Italy" both easily accessible by excellent public train connections. However we leave the best to last and a definite highlight of the week is our final night in UNESCO Alberobello. Famed for its conical topped limestone Trulli houses, Alberobello resembles a town straight out of a fairy tale, complete with roofs decorated in astronomical and pagan symbols. If you are looking for a walking holiday in a forgotten area of Italy which offers superb coastal walking, plenty of sunshine, fantastic food, and beautiful architecture, then this is the only choice!

Is this holiday for you? This is a relaxed Mediterranean hiking holiday, with a reasonable amount of walking on most days. We average between 3 and 6 hours walking each day, with between 150 and 800 metres of ascent. Most of the time, the underfoot conditions are good, following tracks, trails, coastal paths and some sections of maintained pathway. Participants will carry just a small day-sack during the walking. This walking holiday is suitable for regular weekend hikers looking for a relaxing walking holiday in a beautiful part of Italy.

Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Bari. An escorted transfer from Bari Airport is provided. Arrival at Bari Airport and transfer by public bus to the city centre with the KE local leader. After checking-in at the group hotel the rest of the day is left free for exploring at leisure. Bari is the capital of the Puglia region and as a living town is definitely more local than tourist, ensuring a truly authentic start to the holiday. With its winding streets and hidden alleys, this is a town where local people live their lives communally, with doors wide open whilst women sit making pasta amongst lots of comings and goings! Dotted with small churches, a Romanesque Basilica, traditional piazzas and street cafes, Bari is a wonderful place to people watch with a cappuccino after wandering the town. In the evening the group will meet up before heading out for dinner.

Day 2: Transfer to the Gargano Peninsula. Walk to the castle of Monte San Angelo. In the morning we take a private transfer to the Gargano Peninsula (2h30). sanctuary dedicated to the St. Michael. Built on a spur of 803 m and dominated by the mass of its castle, overlooking both the Gargano Promontory and the Adriatic Sea, this is a stunning start to the week. We'll have free time to discover the historical centre, the magnificent cathedral and the cave church (venerated as being the last place where St. Michael appeared). In the afternoon we walk along an ancient path once used by pilgrims and shepherds. Lovely features of this area are the ancient farmhouses known as "masserie." Traditional and isolated, these beautiful farmhouses of Puglia are famous for their grandeur, yet rustic living and we are sure to see some along the way. Tonight we stay in Mattinata, and after our arrival, we'll have time to freshen up after checking-in before dinner.

Day 3: Coastal walk to the Rosse Canyon. Transfer to the pretty seaside town of Mattinata. From our hotel we start by following a quiet road before picking up a variety of trails along the coast until reaching the `Ripe Rosse Valley` a dramatic canyon formed by red rocks and high cliffs. Today the landscape is fascinating and we are rewarded with frequent sea views. Today's walk ends in a picturesque bay where we can enjoy a refreshing swim after the walk. We'll go back to Mattinata Italian style by public bus and after freshening up, head out for dinner. For our second night in Mattinata we chose not to include dinner, so the group can dine together at a small traditional restaurant. This leaves you free to decide on your own budget, quantity and choice of food and we feel is all part of the overall holiday experience, especially in Italy with so many excellent restaurant choices around.

Day 4: Superb hiking to Monte Saraceno on spectacular high cliffs. Transfer to Bari. On this morning's last walk on the Gargano Peninsula, we start our walk directly from the beach of Mattinata and head up to the promontory of Monte Saraceno. Known as one of the furthest points of the Gargano peninsula, Monte Saraceno is a spectacular high cliff with wonderful views of the coast and a superb archaeological site with a superb pre-roman necropolis of around 400 graves. After exploring this fantastic area we'll transfer by public bus and train to Bari (2h.45). Travelling on the train in Italy is a great experience and also gives a flavour of Italy's excellent public transport. Over dinner there will be time to discuss with the KE leader the options for the free day.

Day 5: Free day to explore the awesome UNESCO town of Matera or the baroque masterpiece of Lecce. Today is a well-planned mid-week free day leaving you free to enjoy at leisure one of the highlights of the region. Both easily reached by public train and approximately 1.30 away is either Lecce or Matera. Lecce, known as the Florence of Southern Italy, is a baroque masterpiece with a stunning historic centre, wonderful ice cream and cake shops, traditional restaurants for long lunches, impressive piazzas, winding alleyways and a roman Amphitheatre. However the stunning Basilica is Lecce's highlight with one of the most amazing facades in the country. The tourist

train is a touristy but fun way to get your bearings. With its hop on and off service, you can see the most important sights of the city easily and quickly. Alternatively, UNESCO Matera is one of the most memorable, unusual and interesting destinations in the whole of Italy. Famous for its hill top location, spectacular cave dwellings and atmospheric location, Matera is a living miracle of a ghost town. Up until the 1950s, Matera was riddled with poverty, a town where hundreds of residents lived in malaria-ridden squalor. The cave residents were moved out by law and up until the 1980's, Matera was still a ghost town. Today it is famous for the filming of Mel Gibson's `The Passion of Christ` and offers the opportunity to step back in time to a time of troglodyte living. Lunch and dinner are not included today, as both destinations have a wonderful selection of local restaurants or small supermarkets where local produce can be purchased to picnic. Bari also has an excellent range of restaurants for your return.

Day 6: Explore one of the most stunning cities in Italy, Ostuni. Transfer to UNESCO Alberobello. Today we transfer by train to Ostuni, one of the most stunning cities in southern Italy, complete with a dramatic fortress surrounded by whitewashed houses, which all lie clustered together on the hillside. A beautiful and compact hilltop town lying within touching distance of the sea, Ostuni is charming example of traditional Mediterranean architecture and a wonderful place to explore. This small city is primarily a series of levels, staircases, small roads, alleys and arches, where hints of the Middle Ages are on every corner. After exploring the town we'll walk through ancient olive groves planted on fiery red soil, a true trademark of Puglia and its wonderful olive oil. The afternoon sees us transfer to the gem of Puglia, "Alberobello" a UNESCO World Heritage site, famed for its pagan and beautiful fairy-tale looking houses. As if appearing straight out of a Brothers Grimm story, we'll have time to explore this small village which has preserved its "trulli", a unique and ancient farm house, traditional of this region. After checking in to the group hotel in Alberobello, we will head out for dinner at a traditional Italian pizzeria.

Day 7: Walk and explore the local area of vineyards, olive groves and charming "trulli" houses. Today we enjoy our local surroundings as we discover the Itria valley. A rich and fertile area in the centre of Puglia, Valle d'Itria stretches from Putignana in the far north to Ostuni in the south and is famed for its vineyards and olive groves. Today we hike on agricultural trails through the rich red soil of this region passing olive groves and vineyards, local farms and "trulli" in a fascinating landscape. Each town and village of the valley Valle d'Itria has its own food or wine speciality and in the afternoon we have time to explore the lovely hilltop village of Locorotondo. Well known in the whole of the country for the quality of its wines, Locorotondo is officially a Borghi più belli d'Italia - listed as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. With its unusual pointed gable roofs and pretty gothic church, the town is a beautiful place to wander down the tightly packed alleyways before purchasing some of the excellent and slightly sparking local wine! We return by train to Alberobello, where after freshening up we'll head out to dinner into one of the many local restaurants in Alberobello. For our final night we have not included dinner as we feel choosing a restaurant for a celebratory group dinner will be the perfect end to the week!

Food Puglia is known as the breadbasket of Italy, producing approximately 80% of Europe’s pasta, the majority of Italy’s fish, more wine than the whole of Germany and more olive oil than all the other regions of Italy combined! Therefore part of the experience of any visit to Puglia is the opportunity to taste its wonderful cuisine. The Puglia region traditionally has a 'Mediterranean' diet, rich in vegetables, pasta, fish and olive oil. Soups, salads, freshbaked breads and especially the tomato-topped brusheeta all feature in the region of Puglia, alongside fava beans, potatoes, seafood and grilled meats. The soil here is very fertile and everywhere we go, we will see an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruit. Breakfasts are traditionally continental in style with bread, pastries or cakes, yoghurt, jam and honey served with tea or coffee. Lunch will either be packed lunches that we can carry with us and enjoy along the way or we’ll take lunch in a small restaurant. Dinner is the most important meal of the day for Italians and normally 3 courses. Puglian wine is excellent and most Italians enjoy a glass or two over lunch and dinner! Italy is also famous for its aperitifs, from chilled prosecco to campari, vermouth and cinzano all served over ice. Don't forget to try the zesty local limoncello and the famous after dinner fiery grappas!

Meal Plan All breakfasts, 5 picnic lunches and 4 dinners are included. Not including three evening meals enables the group and leader to choose together which one of the excellent local restaurants in Mattinata and Alberobello to try. Italian food is world famous and both towns have a wide range of restaurants to suits all budgets and tastes.

Joining Arrangements & Transfers An escorted transfer on public transport from Bari Airport to the centre of Bari is provided on day 1 and is timed for the midday arrival of the Easyjet flight from Gatwick. Clients arriving later then the meeting time should make their own arrangements to meet at the group hotel. Two seperate companies operate a public bus service from Bari Airport to the centre of Bari running aproximately every 30mins, tickets range from 1 - 5 euros depending on the time and comany. The airport is only 8kms from the city and a taxi on arrival will cost approximately 20 euros depending on your arrival time. At the end of the holiday there will be a single timed transfer from the group hotel in Alberobello back to Bari Airport.

Accommodation During this trip, the group will spend 7 nights in simple but comfortable hotels and guesthouses in Bari (3 nights), Mattinata (2 nights) and Alberobello (2 nights). A Typical Day During the day’s walk, we will carry a day sack which is large enough to pack a lightweight fleece, water bottle, packed lunch and other extras such as cameras etc. We usually make a fairly early start (breakfast at around 08.00) and make the best of the cool morning air. We will walk for between 4 and 6 hours each day, stopping off en-route for lunch. There will be time also to explore the charming towns and villages we’ll encounter along the way. Some afternoons there will be time to explore a small bay or cove, with the opportunity to enjoy a stroll along the beach. On arrival at our hotel, there will always be time to rest, shower and enjoy a drink before we sit down to an evening meal.

Group Leader & Support Staff An experienced, professional, English-speaking local guide will lead the trip.

Spending Money Approximately €200-€300 should cover all miscellaneous personal expenditure, the non-included meals, wine with dinner and activities / transport on your free day as well as reasonable tips for the local staff. You can withdraw cash (euros only) from ATM on arrival at Bari Airport and there are further ATM machines in in Bari and Alberobello. If you intend to travel with cash, you should take this in the form of euros. We recommend that you carry your travel money in the form of cash (euros). Guidance On Tipping Tips do not form part of the wages of local staff but they are very much appreciated. It is important to remember that tipping is voluntary and should be dependent on good service. It is best if the tip is given at the end of the trip by the group as a whole. We recommend that each group member contributes around €10 – 15 to a group pool and that tips are then distributed between the guide and other support staff as the group feels is appropriate. It is a good idea also to have small change for other tips such as in restaurants or for porters carrying your bags at hotels.

Baggage Allowance There is no weight limit, other than that imposed by the airline. We ask you to restrict your luggage to one main trek bag / suitcase and one small daypack. You may find wheeled luggage to be useful on this holiday.

Free KE Gift When You Book As a way to thank all our clients we offer a Free Gift for every holiday that you book with us. The range of gifts available is related to your KE Explorers Club status and the number of trips you have completed. Choose from KE T-shirts, Buffs, Trek bags plus many more. Alternatively, instead of selecting a free gift, you can choose for KE to make a £10 donation to the Juniper Trust Charity on your behalf. Simply select your Free Gift or choose to make a donation in your My KE account once you have booked your holiday.

* Please note that postage & package costs will be charged for Trek Bags sent outside of the UK. For current costs please view details on Free Gifts.

Group Size And Holiday Status For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

General Information Passport & Visas A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Health & Vaccinations You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations. UK residents should obtain a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This entitles you to state provided medical treatment, but is not a substitute for medical travel insurance which is still vital when travelling overseas.

Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/

Preparing For Your Trip It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on an active holiday getting some additional exercise. Whilst regular hiking in hill or back country is the best preparation, jogging, cycling and swimming are also good for developing better cardiovascular fitness and stamina. Before departure, we suggest that you try to fit in a number of longer walks in hilly country.

Know Before You Go As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices ‘Know before you go’ campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas, and we recommend that all KE travellers take a look at the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination on the official FCO website: www.fco.gov.uk. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips. KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

Climate The coast around Puglia has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and coolish winters. The best time to visit is from March to June and from September to October, when temperatures are the most pleasant. At these times of year, daytime temperatures will vary between 20 and 30 degrees centigrade, falling to between 10 and 20 degrees centigrade at night.
