May 1980, standing on the shore of Hess Lake in the dark, not knowing that much about bass fishing and nothing about this new lake that our family recently purchased a cottage on. I heard and saw two bass boats coming across the lake from the boat launch to the East shore, so I figured they knew something I didn’t. I got in my 12 foot flat bottom duck boat with a 7-1/2 Mercury motor and headed in that direction. And in the first 5 minutes of fishing on this lake the first bass I caught was a 6 lb. 14 oz. largemouth. Little did I know that 34 years later that the first bass I caught would still be my largest. In that 34 years, we graduated from a 12 foot boat with a hand held trolling motor to an aluminum bass boat, then to two high powered Ranger bass boats with high tech fishing poles and gear. Along the way I have caught many thousands of bass with 97+/- over 5 pounds and have a number of bass over 6-1/2 pounds. I have been at 6 lb. 12 oz. and 6 lb. 13 Kwik Mailers oz., but have never topped that first bass. Who said God 712 Ottawa Ave doesn’t have a sense of humor? Holland I would be lying if I said MI 49423 a bass larger than 6 lb. 14 oz. wasn’t on my bucket list 616-396-6034 before I leave this good earth.

Duck Season 2013

by Jim Dokter

The 2013 duck season will go down as a very good season and the best in a number of years. We were blessed to do probably the most hunting we ever had in a duck season. Opening weekend in Michigan started good with a big shoot of mallards and geese on opening day. Then we traveled to North Dakota for a week where we enjoyed a great time and were able to shoot a lot of ducks. The hunting was good but we had to work for them more than usual due to a lot of water and standing crops. Thanks goodness we tuck the Polaris Ranger which ended up being a great asset. We then returned to hunt in Michigan for a few weeks with some very nice hunts of ducks and geese. We then traveled to Arkansas the weekend before Thanksgiving to hunt the first four days of the duck season in Arkansas. We were treated to huge numbers of ducks and snow geese and enjoyed phenomenal hunting in pits in the flooded rice fields and pounded on the ducks in the flooded timber. It was great with many flocks of “in your face” shooting. Then it was back to Michigan for the last week of the season in Michigan which found good numbers of flight ducks in the area which resulted in some good hunts prior to everything icing up the last couple of days. I shot my first snow goose in Michigan in over 40 years of hunting in Michigan. Then the middle of December we returned to Arkansas for another 4 days of hunting. We enjoyed some very nice hunts in the rice fields and in the timber again. It was a great season with a lot of ducks and geese in the freezer for the Wild Game Dinner in March. I bought a shirt in Arkansas at the end of the season which says, “I survived the 2013 – 2014 duck season” and gave it to my wife. Bless her heart for putting up with a dog and a duck hunter for over 40 years. (If she would only clean the ducks I would be happy, happy, happy!)

Pheasant Hunting by Ken Hengst Do you remember October 20th in the 60’s and 70’s? How great it was to get out of school, spend

some time with friends and hunt pheasants. And yes, of course you had to wait until the 10:00 am legal time to shoot. And while waiting for that lucky time of 10:00 am you hear the first shots; you look at your watch and see its’ 9:45! My watch must be wrong, lets go. Well it’s been many years since I had a chance to hunt the great ringneck, until October 10th of 2013. We are headed to Platt South Dakota to hunt pheasants. The trip started with a flight out of Grand Rapids to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. From Sioux Falls it’s about a two hour drive to Platt. Arriving at River Hills Lodge that afternoon allowed some time to shoot clays, have dinner and get prepared for the next day hunt. Friday October 11 started with a cup of coffee standing outside watching the sun come up and listening to the cock pheasant’s crow. After breakfast it was meeting the group outside, hopping into a four passenger mule and heading out to the field. We hunted milo, corn, grass and a tree line that served as a wind break. The patches of cover we hunted were a quarter mile to a half mile long. We were using retrieving labs that could really hunt. They were incredible. It didn’t take long and the birds were flying and we were shooting. What a hoot! I hadn’t had this much fun since hunting East Saugatuck back in the day. We all got birds that morning and the dogs never lost a bird that we shot. After lunch and a little nap we did it all over again. We did the same thing every day with returning to the airport on Sunday October 13th with a bag of pheasants and memories of a place in the west called River Hills Lodge. This is a place that will offer an experience you will never forget.

Put in Bay is our fishing destination each year. It is a village on South Bass Island. It is a huge tourist destination during the summer months. It truly is a drinking village with a fishing problem! They have the world’s longest bar downtown that has 45 bartenders on a weekend night. They serve between 4000-5000 people each night. The island population is about 400 and on summer weekends it soars to 20-25 thousand! We pull into Port Clinton, jump on a ferry, take the short trip to the island then park the truck and rent golf carts. ATV’s and golf carts are the mode of travel here. There is nothing like going out to eat or to a bar on your golf cart. Then even have special parking spots for the golf carts. Lots of shops and restaurants to visit. My favorite is the Whisky & Soup. Best place for perch, walleye and steak. This restaurant is a seasonal and when summer is done all of the staff packs up and goes to Colorado to re-open the Goat in Keystone which is only open during the winter. We hire Captain Denny Bergeman of Cant Miss Charter Service out of Port Clinton. He picks us up at the dock in downtown and then we head out. Depending on the conditions we fish in either the US or in Canada waters, most often on the Canadian side. By Pelee Island. He works hard for us to limit out and seems we always do. The 34 foot Caterman is very comfortable to fish from. We catch lots of sheephead, catfish, gobies, white bass, white perch and walleyes. My biggest to date is a 33.5 inch, 12 pound monster that was caught a few years back. If you haven’t been on a charter in Lake Erie this is the place to go. But on the weekends it is very busy with the younger and rowdy crowd. We opt to arrive on a Sunday and leave on Wednesday and we have the island to yourself. There are lots of things to do when you are not fishing. You can island hop and visit North Bass, Middle Bass and Kelly Island. Breweries, caves and the War of 1812 Monument to see or just go to Pelee Island and visit the winery and hike the bird and nature preserve.

Fishing Opportunities

If anyone is interested in learning new bodies of water, meeting new anglers or just having fun on the water then contact me. Looking to see if there is any interest in getting some anglers to fish on a Saturday morning or a weekday morning. As an example, maybe once we get together and chase down some plump perch. Another day we can hammer on hog bluegills. Next up could be platter size crappie. This could be a fun time just meeting new folks, learning a few tips and new techniques. Another thought would be a few tournaments with the emphasis on fun! An example; A panfish tournament with a 25 fish limit and no more than 13 of one species. Thirteen bluegills and twelve crappies as a thought. Another tournament could be on game fish with a five fish limit and no more than two or three of one species between bass, pike and walleye. Often I hear from members that they wish that the club had more events outside of the fine banquets. You are the club, thus you need to speak up and offer to assist if there is something that you enjoy. I love fishing, talking about fishing, shooting the breeze and meeting new anglers. Therefore if anyone sees an opportunity with what I mentioned or anything to do with fishing, please call me at 616-566-7713 or email me at [email protected].

Flea Market night Thursday April 24 – Tables are free, you just get to donate 10% of whatever cash you take in to the club. Call Drew Deters at 218-8307 to reserve your table. Whenever the cub runs this event it is a hit. Great place to pick up a bargain or a great way to move some outdoor items that are cluttering up the garage or basement.
