KELSTON GIRLS' COLLEGE Term 2 - May 2016

Principal’s Newsletter Kia ora,

Food, performance, spot prizes and fun are the order of the night!

Welcome to Term 2. Last week we enjoyed an evening with parents learning about NCEA. Senior students shared last year’s data with parents; Mr Coetzee explained how NCEA works and Mrs Steer demonstrated using sand, pebbles, rocks and a glass jar - how important time management and organisational skills are for success in NCEA.

Winter Sports A number of staff and parents have volunteered to be coaches and managers. We are grateful for Wynton Rufer’s support in supplying a coach for our football team. We are grateful for a huge step up in support from the Rugby Union for coaches for our Rugby teams. Parents, please note that our new Sports Coordinator is Sam Baker. He can be contacted on 827 6063.

Congratulations to our highly successful Waka Ama team. They showed tremendous persistence and grit in succeeding despite a broken paddle.

FROM THE BOARD

If your daughter has a sports uniform from previous years still in her room, can you return it to the school as soon as possible please? Healthy Eating, Healthy Exercise At this time it is worth reiterating that we encourage your daughters to be healthy and fit, not only for sport, but also to enable success academically. Healthy mind, healthy body – truer words were never spoken.

This week on Wednesday we held our school Cross Country. Shortly we will start the Winter lunchtime ports activities. Whether it’s a brisk walk around the block every day, yoga, the gym, or playing in a team, exercise is invaluable for keeping the mind healthy as well as the body. Wahine Toa This is a heads up that Wahine Toa is on Friday 29th July – 6:30 to 9:00pm in the school’s auditorium. The occasion is to celebrate the importance of the women in our lives. Each student is to invite a female important to her to the evening.

Dear Parents, Thank you to parents who have expressed an interest in joining the Kelston Girls' College, Board of Trustees. Please contact the Board Secretary for more information on 827 9622. GATEWAY There has been no down time among our students who seek new challenges and learning outside the classroom. The world of work is a serious topic for our senior girls. The possibilities are endless and the competition out there is huge for employment. This is why exposure to workplaces and training courses is essential to help our students to make informed choices about their future. But also to up-skill and prepare them for what lies beyond school. For many, that is just months away. The Gateway programme aims to offer a realistic look into different types of employment and meaningful learning opportunities that closely align with future career prospects. Students who actually go to a workplace to train and participate as an employee are learning first hand, gaining confidence and credits towards their NCEA. During the recent holiday break some Gateway students attended the following training and workplaces: Dive HQ, Cut Above Hair Academy, bank training, cabin attendant, fork-hoist certificate, coaching and recreation. More students have requested time in the holidays to attend courses of interest as they want to enrich their experiences, gain credits and knowledge. At present our Gateway students are working in the following businesses: The Warehouse: Red Shirts Programme, Me and Mrs Jones Hair Salon, Fitness, Zeal Performing Arts, Youth Work, Sound and Recording, Event Management, ANZ Bank, Mad Butcher. There are more workplaces planned for Term 2 including Telecommunications, early childhood, primary schools and other businesses who welcome our students into their workplace.

SDNZ 2016 Our girls did a great job representing Kelston Girls’ at the annual Street Dance NZ competition on Fri 29th April. They worked tirelessly through the holidays, and were pleased to be able to perform their final product for friends and family at a dress rehearsal before the big day. It was a great experience, with many lessons learnt along the way.

We

would like to send a big thank you to our sponsors 'Streamline Fixers' for their generosity and help. We look

forward to next year’s comp!

SPORTS RUGBY The KGC rugby season kicked off this week with a preseason non-comp round. Our First XV travelled to Otahuhu College for their first outing. Players of the Day were Pearl Wilson and Isadora Kini. Our 10s squad hosted One Tree Hill College at Archibald Park. Players of the Day were Filisita Tapusoa, Latu Fainu and our try scorer, Wendy Toelupe. Well done to all of the girls. Good luck for the start of the proper season. Thank you to our coaches, managers, parents and supporters.

ARTS DEPT Year 12 and 13 visual art and design students visited Onehunga High School to view New Zealand's top art and design folios from 2015. These folios included photography, painting, print, design and sculpture. Kelston Girls’ College students benefited by viewing inspirational student work and learnt about developing a series of ideas.

ANZAC DAY PARADE

NETBALL Seven Kelston Girls' netball teams started their winter season at Netball Waitakere's Te Pai courts. Our 3 senior teams play on Tuesday evenings and have so far played 2 of 3 grading games. Four Junior teams played their first game on Saturday the 7th of May. The Premier team had an excellent start by winning their first grading game 29-14, against Avondale College Prem 2. They also had a repeat success this week winning against St Dominics Senior A 25-24. The Senior Red and Senior Blue teams eased into the season by playing each other for the first grading game, with Senior Blue winning 8-7. This week the Senior teams played against Hoani Waititi and Green Bay High. The Juniors had their first grading game early on Saturday morning. 10 Red and 10 Blue both won their grading games. 9 Red had a low turnout of players but 9 Blue helped out. Our Junior players who displayed exceptional improvement and performance on the day were Jasmine Joseph-Pampellone (9 Red), Daisy Tauvae Tuiletufuga (9 Blue), Serafina Setu (10 Red) and Windy Lavasii (10 Blue). We are grateful for our school coaches from the wider Kelston community who have volunteered their time and expertise to develop netball at our school. We also have senior students coaching and umpiring junior teams. If you are interested in umpiring on Saturday mornings or Tuesdays 4:30pm-8:00pm, we need your help. Please contact the school on 827 6063.

Our Prefects joined Kelston Boys’ High School prefects at the Anzac Day Parade on 25th April. Our Head Girl, Rhonda Matagi-Tomasi and the Head Boy of Kelston Boys’ laid a wreath at the Cenotaph. It was great to see so many people gather in remembrance. Thank you to our Prefects and staff who represented Kelston Girls’ College.
