PREPARING FOR HEALTH SCIENCE MATH PROFICIENCY TEST All new students and transfer students are required to take additional skills tests before admission into the Nursing Program. These include a math proficiency test and an algebra proficiency test which measure the student’s proficiency levels in diagnostics mathematics and algebra. There is no fee, and the tests take approximately 1½ to 2 hours each to complete. Why require the additional tests? Certain levels of proficiency in mathematics and algebra are necessary for success in a health science program. These specific tests are used because they show specific areas of math and algebra. They are directly related to skills and the type of thinking needed in health science programs. Results of the tests will be used to assist students and their advisors with proper course selection and placement. If a student does not receive a letter of admission into Nursing within two years of taking the math and/or algebra proficiency, the test(s) must be repeated. The math and algebra proficiency tests are given in the Assessment Center (B200) at the Napier Avenue Campus in Benton Harbor, at the Bertrand Crossing Campus in Niles, and the South Haven Campus. First-time college students must take the College placement assessment. Nursing students are required to pass diagnostic math and algebra proficiency tests in addition to the College placement assessment.
