PRAYER GUIDE FOR FASTING WEEK 20th – 26th January, 2014

_____________________________________________________________________

Fasting remains one of the most challenging but spiritually rewarding Christian disciplines. This year, we will be taking our fast a little deeper and embarking on a 7 day complete fast. With this fast, we are calling the church to step up their level of fasting commitment. Where you had previously fasted 6 am to 6pm, thereby eating two meals per day, we are asking that you would step up to only having one meal per day. For those who previously ate one meal per day, we are asking that you step it up to a complete fast whereby you abstain from all food and beverages and only drink water. Ezra 8:21 -23 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our goods. 22 For I was ashamed to ask the king for a band of soldiers and horsemen to protect us against the enemy on our way, since we had told the king, “The hand of our God is for good on all who seek him, and the power of his wrath is against all who forsake him.” 23 So we fasted and implored our God for this, and he listened to our entreaty. Ezra was taking a group of people back to Jerusalem after the Exile, but he knew the journey would be fraught with danger. He called the leaders together and declared that their success and protection will only come from God not the king. Ezra stated the purpose of the fast clearly 1. That they would humble themselves before God 2. They would get Protection from him as they journeyed through life 3. They would be shielded from the enemy Ezra believed that through fasting and prayer, God would listen to them. There is much that we are expecting from God this year so let us come in fasting and prayer to God who not only is listening but also answers. FOCUS Our church will be our main focus during this fast. In these seven days we will pray for God’s special favor for the release of our land to its full use so that the vision of the church will take root. HOW TO FAST: Set aside a time for prayer each day. Remember to fast without prayer is nothing more than a hunger strike – that is not what we want to do before God. So set your prayer times, perhaps a little earlier each morning, and observe them. Alternatively, you may want to get to work early each morning, lock your office door and spend 20 minutes in prayer before work, another 20 minutes at lunch-break and a final 20 minutes at dinner or before you sleep. Begin each day by confessing your sins and cleansing your soul before God. A good place to begin is by praying Psalms 139: 23-24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” As you pray this, pause and listen to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, Examine yourself and confess before the Lord. To fast while you have hidden sin in your life is pointless as God sees it and it blocks your prayers. Over these next 7 days, think through how you can bless the poor. Acts of mercy and kindness towards the poor are an important part of fasting. If you are abstaining from food, then give the food, or the cost of your meals, to the poor around you. The Social Justice department can guide you on where to be a blessing. HOW TO MANAGE YOUR FAST During the fast, you may feel somewhat weaker than normal especially the first few days; you may feel tired and irritable or even get headaches. Lightening your workload and cutting down on strenuous exercises is advisable to maintaining your health and morale. Fasting is not just about denying yourself food; it is exchanging the needs of the

Physical body for those of the spiritual. Long times of prayer and reading God’s Word will be very essential for entering into a more intimate communion with God. Fasting is a time of heightened spiritual devotion, be aware that Satan will do everything he can to pull you away from prayer and Bible reading time. If this should happen, immediately go to God in prayer asking Him to strengthen your resolve in the face of difficulties and temptations. Your motive in fasting must be to glorify God, not to have an emotional experience, and not to attain personal happiness. When your motives are right, God will honour your seeking heart and bless your time with Him in a very special way. The Lord bless you as you begin this year in prayer and fasting. May we all find success in Jesus name!

DAY 1 – MONDAY 20TH JANUARY 2014 Thank the LORD for His faithfulness concerning the New Year we have begun. Rejoice that in this new season the LORD will cause you to see the virtues of His favour manifest in your life. Morning Prayer: REPENTANCE: Ask the LORD to forgive you where you have gone astray from Him. Ask that the spirit of repentance will be upon you heavily, concerning your life, family, the Body of Christ and nation. (Job 36:10-11, Isa 59:20-21, Eze 18:32). Pray that the LORD will release a spirit of grace and supplication upon the Body of Christ with regard to the Great Commission, repenting and interceding for the lost in the nation. Confess as sin, living like the old person you used to be. Confess as sin any spiritual adultery for thinking that anyone but God could ever satisfy the longings of your soul. Ask that God would forgive you of this sin. Acknowledge that God alone is your Supreme Lord. Acknowledge that God alone is gracious and compassionate. Ask that the Lord would renew your vision of Him as a totally competent and totally good God—boundless in holy love. Matthew 5:23-24 states that, 23 … if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Ask the Lord to bring to mind your social relationships that need healing and reconciliation. Confess as sin that you have been living for yourself, and putting self first before others. Confess as sin how far you have moved from reflecting Jesus. Ask that the Lord would enable you to put off the flesh, and put on the Spirit of Christ. Confess as sin any foolish belief that you can make life work apart from Jesus. Repent of denying God’s love for you and allowing the enemy, Satan, to mold you into the image of this world, where you have denied the Cross of Jesus Christ. Return to God now and repent of every idol you have held in your heart. Thank God for his forgiveness of your sin.

Lunch Time Prayer: RENEWAL: The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley. . . . I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’“ Ezek. 37:1-6 So many in our church, in the marriages, in the relationships and hearts have become piles of dry, breathless bones. Help us ask, like Ezekiel, for the possibility of renewal, redemption, and restoration. Ask the Lord to breathe on the bone dry marriages of our friends, families, and possibly even our own. Ask that the love of Jesus would transform stubborn hearts into supple hearts, replace unkindness with mercy. Our Lord Jesus, is the resurrection and life. Pray that God would bring life to the places of death and restore to all of us the joy of His salvation. Pray that the Lord would place in you a desire for Him that is greater that a desire for gold or silver. Pray that the Lord would show you the beauty of His holiness that you may worship Him with everything you are. Ask for a heart for God. Put on your new identity in Christ and renew your in Christ. Clothe yourself in the peace of Jesus Christ.

Evening Prayer: RESTITUTION: Pray that the LORD will bring back to your mind, areas you need to do more than repent. Ask Him to show you where you need to restore – returning that which you took without permission, no matter how small. Pray for the restitution of that which has been taken away from the nation – restitution by leaders who abused their position and have used national resources for their own gain. Ask the LORD to cause restitution to be done to you where you were swindled or someone stole what belongs to you, even what you are not aware of (spiritually or physically). Pray that they shall return it back in full measure.

DAY 2 – TUESDAY 21ST JANUARY 2014 Morning Prayer: Within the next 50-100 years, Africa will be leading spiritually and also economically. Divinely, God has put Nairobi Chapel on the map, both locally and internationally, positioning her to take up a God-sized mandate to transform the nations. Pray that the ministries at the Nairobi Chapel will have the strong foundation to enable them to lead the church into the purposes of God. Pray that God may help us step boldly forward and accomplish His agenda to Grow DEEP to Reach WIDE. As a church in Africa, we are in the midst of a great work that God is doing. Pray for God’s blessing on The 4 VISION TARGETS we want to accomplish – a. Witness to 1,000,000 b. Impact the 6 sectors of society c. Disciple 100,00 d. Establish 300 churches And the 6 CORE VALUES of the Nairobi chapel – a. Reach people for Christ b. Grow together c. Multiply ourselves at every level d. Release resources to our community e. Empowering the next generation f. Prayer at the core of everything we do Pray for the leaders of Nairobi Chapel - Pastor Oscar , the Elders and the Staff – that they would be faithful to the church of Jesus Christ as they diligently seek to lead and live out the vision we carry. Lunch Time Prayer: Thank the Lord for the gift of home He has given to us as Nairobi Chapel. We are blessed to have 14 acres of land that are being used for the purposes of God’s Kingdom. However, we have been unable to use this land to its maximum capacity because of the claim the Forestry Dept has made that this land belongs to them, even though they gave letters of commitment when we bought the land that they had no claim on the land, and the Government gave us letters of assurance that the titles are clean. For this reason they have denied us building permits and have only allowed us to put up temporary structures. Pray that this matter would be resolved, and that we would be given full use of the property so we can develop it. Claim this as the season of habitation – when God will make it possible for us to move out of the tents and build up permanent buildings. More than any other prayer in this guide – make this one your daily prayer and keep bringing it back to the Lord. To do this please pray that God would raise up an army of prayer warriors who will intercede before his throne on behalf of the Chapel, and on behalf of this matter. Prayer warriors who would take up focused prayer for this property as the single focus of 2014. Pray too that our breakthrough would first and foremost be a breakthrough in the “heavenly realms” against the spiritual forces of darkness. The real battle is the battle for souls. So pray that the release of the land would also symbolize a spiritual release for a flood of souls to be won for Christ. Evening Prayer: Pray with the leadership as they work on the Master Plan to develop the property. Pray for ideas that would bring people into the property who would never otherwise come to church. Pray for the team that will head the development drive. Pst Sammy Mangeli, Pst Nick Korir, Pst Gowi Odera and Pst Faith

Mugera. A capital drive will begin from 2015 and prayerfully building will begin in 2016. Give thanks to God for the generous congregation of Nairobi Chapel. Pray that TC Kigali will be a beacon of hope and refuge to the residents of that city and the country of Rwanda. Pray for services that will begin this Sunday the 19th of January and the launch that will take place 8 weeks later. As they prepare for the logistics, ask that the Lord would make provision for them and send them divine helpers as they put everything in place. Pray for God to be their strength in their place of service. And that each of them will discover the joy of service. Ask God to raise more volunteers from the congregation. That many would be convicted to line up and serve. Pray that the ministries within Nairobi Chapel will have adequate supply of volunteers in 2014. Evening Prayer:

As we continue to trust God to help us establish 300 daughter churches by the year 2020, Thank God for the amazing growth in Church planting work that is currently going on. Take time to thank God for the men who have answered the call to set up churches in Nakuru- Pst Robert Mbugua, Kisumu- Pst Joannes Abongo, Eldoret- Pst Samuel Nyawanda, Lilongwe- Pst Steve and Terry Njeru, Lusaka – Pst Silas Oulu, Gaberone – Pst Lawrence and Maki Kariuki. As they launch out, pray for their families. Ask the Lord to give them favorable seasons of transition. That their families will settle well in the respective towns and cities and that these areas will become home for them, their spouses and their children. Ask God to give them a clear vision for ministry as they lead their Church plants. Pray for favor as they go into the different communities, ask the Lord to establish networks for the different church planting teams and for wisdom as they mobilize human and material resources. Pray for receptive hearts in the respective church plant communities. Pray that the church planting teams’ evangelism efforts will be greatly rewarded. That many men, women and children will respond to the gospel of Christ. Partnerships: We have been blessed and honored with great friends across the world. Give thanks with us for these friendships. Pray that they would be strengthened and deepened as we together seek to accomplish what God has set out before us.
