Information from Member Churches of the Union of Evangelical Churches with suggested items for prayer

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMAN Brian Wood

It was in 1906 that previously independent Churches joined together by means of a Deed Poll. The effect was in the words of the modern song to, “Bind us together with cords that cannot be broken”. There was a name change to the Union of Evangelical Churches in 1956 and a change of legal entity to a Charitable Company in 2008. In the spirit of togetherness we share the sadness of our brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ over the decisions reported elsewhere in this Prayer Focus to close the Rayleigh and Shoebury Churches due to numbers attending dropping to unsustainable levels. Now is not the time or the place to address the questions that arise at times like this, but I assure you that the Ministerial and Finance Committees will continue to discharge their responsibility on behalf of the Board of the UEC to seek the Lord’s will for the future of these premises that have a special place in the hearts of so many. We do not under-estimate the challenge, and, mindful of the spiritual nature of our task, invite your prayer support. As members of the UEC and with 2 Kings chapter 6 in mind the burden of our prayers for each other should be, “open our eyes,” so enabling us to be available to pray, ”open their eyes,” on behalf of those amongst whom we are called and privileged to minister. We are encouraged by recent efforts to re-introduce cooperation between our youth groups and I have included pictures from their recent games, worship and gospel event attended by around 50 in all. Read all about it on page 18. Our thanks to Clarence Road Baptist Church for the use of their premises.

CAMBERWELL Fred Hintze

Greetings to our sister Churches in the UEC. Every Easter for more than 40 years we have held a week-long evangelistic event called “Holiday Special”, through which we reach out to the children and young people of our area with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is usually very well-attended with more than 100 children in attendance each day. God-willing this year Holiday Special will run from Easter Monday (6th April) to Friday 10th April—we give God thanks for the wonderful opportunity this affords to us to share the love of God through the preaching of the Cross. Please pray that many children will come, have fun, be kept safe and most importantly be brought to repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. ‘Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”’ Matthew 19:14 The following UEC Churches are on Facebook—follow them to keep up-todate with their latest news, and let the UEC Office know if your Church is on Facebook and isn’t on this list. CHELMSFORD Mark Parrott

The LORD has been good to us as a fellowship over the Autumn and Winter months. We continue to enjoy a strong sense of fellowship and unity. We have had a number of encouragements in recent months, namely: 

The opening up of our premises for use as an emergency night shelter for rough sleepers in Chelmsford during the winter months (some of the men have taken little pocket New Testament & Psalms, which have been left out for them);

The prospect of housing Chelmsford Foodbank for two mornings a week. Pray that this will come to fruition and that we can feed the hungry as well as house the homeless;

We have had a breakthrough in our ‘street witness’ recently with one man now attending services, having been challenged on the streets with the Gospel.

On a personal level, I was blessed and challenged by my trip to the USA back in

October. I participated in all ministry events in the church in downtown Grand Rapids, to which I had been invited (you can see me in action in preaching and evangelism on YouTube – see http://bit.ly/186LUEX and http://bit.ly/186LUEX). Also, since returning from the States I started a new ministry, working part-time alongside my wife Ruth in the Pastoral Centre at Mulberry House. This has led to me attending three key meetings in the House of Commons, representing The Nationwide Christian Trust on ‘The Struggle for the Soul of the Nation’, ‘The Persecution of Christians’ and ‘British values’ respectively. If anyone would like a detailed report of those meetings let me know ([email protected]) and I can e-mail you a copy. We are continuing our monthly apologetics course, Contenders, which we share with friends from Wickford. Just to flag up one of those sessions which is topical and may be of interest to some. On June 28th we have the visit of Muslim Evangelist, Jay Smith, who will be speaking on the subject: ‘How to share the Gospel with Muslims.’ Pray for this event and for our own outreach to Muslim friends and neighbours.

‘Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; his love endures for ever.’ Psalm 106: 1 We praise the Lord for: Over the weekend of 17th-19th October 2014 we celebrated 100 years of worship at our present building in Fobbing Road. On the Friday evening we enjoyed an evening of Tricks & Laughs from a Christian entertainer (Steve Legg). This was held at the local Junior School and used as an outreach to invite family and friends. At the church on Saturday afternoon there was an exhibition of photos etc. showing events that had happened over previous years. Brian Edwards, former President of the FIEC, spoke at the evening meeting. Sunday services were taken by Ray Thurgood who had previously been a Minister of the Church. The evening service was a celebration in the original style of the Peculiar People, singing at least one hymn sung at the first meeting in 1914. This was preceded with a traditional tea meeting. We trust that those who were able to join us at any of these meetings received a blessing. Congratulations to Dave and Rachel on the birth of their second daughter Elsie in December. Please pray for: Our Ministers, Richard and Jeremy Partridge who both have health problems at the present time. Future outreach over the coming months.

CRESSING Dennis Ivey

As we reflect on the events since the previous Prayer Focus, we thank God that many of the Church events have had a positive input into the life of the village. This year the Christmas Tree Festival saw an increase in the numbers that attended. We continue the Work Place Chaplaincy at Freeport and the new chaplaincy work at Amtek in Witham is now under way, with many new contacts and a clear need among the workforce. The Schools work has increased to three primary schools which are visited on a regular basis for assemblies and less formal contact. Our monthly Café Church is still well attended and attracts those on the fringe. We have been encouraged by some of those attending on a semi-regular basis. The partnership with Cressing Events Group is working well with 50 plus attending the monthly lunch. Some of the volunteers from this group support Church events. We continue to try - not always successfully - to think outside of the box with new ideas. For example, by the end of February we will have hosted our ‘Late, Late Burns Night’ complete with haggis and Scottish dancing! In the summer we look forward to hosting the archery event with Wickford EC,

and hope to win the trophy this time! We are blessed that since the previous Prayer Focus our numbers have increased, including three musicians. The Church fellowship now includes folk from Spain, South Africa and Sri Lanka. By the time this Prayer Focus reaches you, we will have welcomed several of our regular attenders into membership and this summer be holding a baptismal service. The age range among the fellowship is from three to 89, but sadly there is an under-representation of the younger age group. This makes it very difficult for us to restart the youth work and increase the Sunday Club numbers. Please pray for those who are suffering from the ravages of time. For the safety of those who travel from distant villages to be with us. For those who work with the children, that they will be encouraged. For the continued unity of the leadership team, and that the fellowship will be committed to ‘sharing God’s love and truth where we are.’

DAWS HEATH Chris Banks

We give thanks to God for His continued goodness and would value your prayers for the following: 

One of our older members, Irene Potter, has been unwell and may have to undergo spinal surgery which could involve quite a risk.

A number of us have loved ones in our families who do not know the Lord and we long for them to be saved.

We are able to take the Gospel into the village from time to time and we seek that there may be fruit from that.

A small number of children gather in the Sunday School each week. We desire to see them saved early in life and would love to see the children's work expanded.

We shall be holding a service God willing on Good Friday at 6.30 pm to which all are welcome. -9-

EASTWOOD

Malcolm Richards How time flies; it doesn’t seem like six months have passed since our last report at the end of last summer. Since our report in the previous edition of Prayer Focus we have continued with God’s help to maintain our witness in the community and we have had some good responses to the activities that have taken place. We invited the Rainbow Group, parents, and helpers to our Harvest Festival and lunch and we are pleased to report that a good number attended. We give God our thanks for that but long to see this on a regular basis. We had over 70 present at our Christmas special for them which was led by Chris and Sue Govus of Back2School Ministries (Chris had recovered from his heart problems earlier in the year). Our next special event is on 8th March (Mother’s Day, but one week early!). Our Kids on Monday Club has continued during the winter months with an average of about 12 each club night. The Leighfields Ladies Group has new ladies coming, and this group will be celebrating its 51st Anniversary this March. The work with the younger ladies, namely the Mums & Tots Group and The Ladies Contact Group, is also well supported and Pastor Graham takes every opportunity to share the Gospel. We are having ministry from our Ministry Team and Simon Werrett is currently leading a Bible Study on the Book of Exodus. We have our “Prayer and Share” time on some Sunday evenings which is well attended, and many take part with readings, poems and choices of hymns. We are encouraged to see good support and participation. We have maintained our published Prayer Line which includes items for praise and thanksgiving and specific prayer for those of our fellowship that are in need as well as world and country matters. Continuing our outside activities, our Harvest gifts were distributed to the Local Homeless Action Resource Project. In November the Kids on Monday Club and the Church collected items for the Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox Appeal and we were able to send 23 boxes for distribution. - 10 -

GREAT WAKERING Brian Wood

Greetings to all our sister Churches in the Union. We regularly remember you before the throne of grace and we appreciate your prayers on our behalf. From the physical perspective, sea, water and small strips of arable land serve alongside an active community spirit to retain the village identity which offers benefits but also creates challenges. Recognising that the village by and large lumps Churches together, we cooperate in providing services in three sheltered accommodation complexes, raising mission funding, worshipping together and organising outreach. The latter has slipped recently and we seek prayer in this regard. We benefit from a pool of youngsters for our midweek activities, but lose out from Christians going outside of the village to worship, drawn by the wider variety of Churches in Southend. We would value your prayers joining with ours that families in the village would recognise the need to worship and witness closer to home. The composite photo is from a recent Leprosy Sunday service when M&Ms provided the incentive for youngsters to discover what it would be like to exhibit the deformities that increasingly affect those whose diagnosis, and treatment, is delayed through the fear of being ostracised. We have some retirements in the pipeline in our young people’s activities, and as is common in Churches today our resources are stretched and so replacements figure among our prayer requests.

LITTLE TOTHAM David Brewer

We continue meeting on Sunday mornings and from time to time have Sunday afternoon “Village Teas” to which we invite the local people. Attendance at these teas has been good; we see these times as bridge-building opportunities where we endeavour to communicate the Gospel in a relaxed and nonthreatening way. We have recently had a lady with special needs come to the our fellowship. She moved to nearby Tiptree during December with her mother and is now a very near neighbour to Brenda Horsnell. In a miraculous, though apparently accidental way, Brenda learnt that a mother and daughter were moving from Hainault and that the daughter had been attending a local church (St Paul’s). We later discovered from another lady called Pam who attends St Paul’s Hainault but once attended Totham, that the St Paul’s congregation had been praying that she would soon find a Church. We simply give Glory to God, there are no accidents in His timing. We remember you in our prayers as we ask that you remember us in yours.

RAYLEIGH

Chris Banks (Moderator) As most readers will be aware, sadly the work at Rayleigh Evangelical Church ceased following the morning service on 28th December. We give thanks to God for the witness that had been maintained in that building for over 90 years and before that when the fellowship at Rayleigh met in Bellingham Lane in the building which now belongs to the Women's Institute. Particularly in past years the work was numerically strong and many people have sought and found the Saviour there. Prayer is particularly requested for: 

All down the years who have heard the Gospel there but do not know the Lord that He would bring it to their remembrance that they may yet be saved;

The former members of the years who are very saddened by the closure that they may be helped to settle in other fellowships;

The future of the work. We are seeking the will of the Lord concerning replanting the work. Please pray that if that is His will, He will provide suitable labourers to undertake the work.

SHOEBURY Bob Werrett

The Church is in a state of flux as after a very good and well attended Carol Service in December, we have been unable to hold services in January and half of February due to Tony and Ann being in New Zealand. This meant that there would be only two people attending services and being winter, the usual occasional attendees would be intermittent in their attendance. However, we have kept our Friday Coffee Break running and most weeks two or three people came in. We also combined with Southend for the mid-week Bible Studies. Our text for 2015 is ‘Look to the Lord and His strength, seek His face always’ (Psalm 105:4) On 8th February we resumed our evening services and so far we have five to eight people attending, though at least half of these come from another UEC church. The Carol Service in December mentioned above was well-attended with pupils from the local Primary School doing the traditional readings for the service, with parents and grandparents also attending. It was a good evening which concluded with refreshments and conversations between those who attended. Following considerable prayer and Church members’ meetings, it has been decided that the Church will close on Easter Sunday. A notice of this event will be circulated in due course. Although UEC-wide youth events have lapsed in recent years, a successful archery and barbecue event last year at Cressing prompted us to consider whether the UEC should put on some more events for young people. The committee, called "Youth Connect" planned three events. The first, held on 28 January, was an encouraging start, with about 50 people in total attending. There were team games (Chris and John), and food (Karen), music (the band from Corringham), and a good Gospel message from John De Lacy, all hosted by Jess Crooks and myself. Our next event is Saturday 13 June at Cressing—details later. Thank you for your practical and prayerful support—for this and for future events. Steve Farrow - 18 -

SOUTHEND-ON-SEA Bill and Nola Hoggard

Life here in Southend remains busy and exciting! We have seen some growth in the Sunday morning services and our quarterly Praise & Worship services continue to be very well attended. We have a small but keen group of youngsters in Sunday School, and thank God for the privilege of teaching them. Our weekly Mums & Tots group is thriving and we have built some lovely relationships with our regular families; the group will have its 1st birthday on March 4th! We have a refurbished kitchen in which to cook our fellowship lunches, nice new lighting in the church and have even found a company that can make blinds for our HUGE windows! Watch this space. In the summer we are hoping to host a free barbecue on the car park for the local people, and would appreciate your prayers for this event as we seek to reach out to the local community and raise the profile of SEC. We have also been asked to be a host venue for the Southend Association of Voluntary Association's annual Faith Tour. Four venues are selected, and professionals from the voluntary sector visit us to hear a presentation about the Church and what we believe - what a great opportunity! Bill and Nola have been regularly involved in the Winter Night Shelter through Love Southend and this ensures between 20 and 30 homeless guests being fed, warm and safe seven nights a week throughout the winter months. It is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when Churches work together. - 19 -

STANWAY Eric Blowes

Warmest greetings to everyone from SEC on a cold January day! Here at Stanway we continue to receive much of God's blessing, maintaining good numbers attending both Sunday Services. September saw the recommencement of all Church activities and Harvest Thanksgiving services. Very sadly we record that on the 2nd October Church member Stella David passed into the Lord's presence; Stella was a very dear and special friend, greatly missed by many. We continue to extend our sympathy to her husband and family and we continue to pray for them all. In November the “Away Weekend” at Sizewell Hall was again a great success and blessing. Maggie became a Christian there (she has been attending Church for some time with her daughter Charlotte). December was very busy, with one lady being baptised on the 7th. The new car park now complete and was dedicated and officially opened. We also provided two sessions of carol singing at Sainsbury's which was appreciated and well received. Stanway Primary School again held their Carol Service in the church, with 300 children, staff and family in attendance. Recently we received and welcomed one lady into membership, but sadly two have relocated to pastures new. Into January, we held a meal for the families of our Parent & Toddler Group at their request, because they had so enjoyed the previous one. Last Saturday, 31st January, 29 men attended the Men's Breakfast followed by carpet bowls. It was also our monthly Coffee Morning, which continues to be popular. We are always grateful for your prayer support and would ask you all to remember those who are suffering illness, problems, struggles with age difficulties and - 20 -

bereavement. We pray for God's guidance and wisdom in fund-raising for the Church Development Fund and future building development for outreach. As always we continue to support you all in prayer and we do value your prayers and communication with us. ‘But be sure to fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully, with all your heart; consider what great things He has done for you (us).’ 1 Samuel 12:24

WICKFORD Keith Britton

It seems like Christmas is only just over and yet here we are almost a quarter of the way through the new year—time does indeed fly! The picture below, from our Junior Church nativity play, shows mini-shepherds keeping watch over their flocks. How the real ones would have wondered at the sight of the baby Jesus – and how we should wonder too, as we consider what He has done for us. We continue to pray for our Union; each Church has its various needs. We think especially of Rayleigh and seek the Lord’s will in this matter, that He may grant revival and restoration of the work there. Also for the Church at Shoebury and wherever there is a similar need. How we live in a time when, “the harvest is indeed plentiful but the labourers are few”. For ourselves , we ask for your prayers as we seek to continue to witness in this corner of the vineyard. The Gospel is faithfully preached each week and our regular services continue, but how we long for men, women and young people to hunger for salvation – for the Holy Spirit to awaken them to their need of Jesus. We look forward to all that God gives us as we wait on Him in the year ahead. God bless each one of you as you similarly wait on Him.

WITHAM Will Abbott

This Easter we will have been in ministry in Witham for two years, and have much to thank God for. For the past four months, the Church has gathered monthly for a continuous prayer relay of 24 hours, supported by a well-attended six week prayer course. Valley Tots has experienced growth, attended one week by 41 toddlers plus their parents and carers. Also, fISHfAITH averages 20-30 young people, the overall behaviour has improved, and conversations are increasingly turning to Jesus. Boys Brigade continues to be very well attended across the four age groups, and enjoys an improving working relationship with the Church, strengthened by a new, monthly planning meeting. Sewing Bee, new last Autumn, is proving very popular having doubled in size. Three more people have given their lives to the Lord, all reached through our dog-walking ministry! The natures of the Sunday congregations are changing with new faces appearing—a combination of returning prodigals, friends of our children, and folks reached through ministry to local people. Valley Nursery has completed its first full term, and enjoys a positive and fruitful relationship with the Church. I spend some time in the Nursery most days and Fiona provides a Bible story weekly. Nursery families have engaged with the Church in a number of ways, including attending Toybox, having their own Nativity service in the chapel, and supporting other services during the Christmas period. In addition to giving thanks for these many blessings, specific prayer would be much appreciated for wisdom and guidance in the discipleship of new and existing believers, the development of pastoral ministry, local outreach, and consideration of further refurbishment.
