FLEXIBLE STUDY TO SUIT YOUR BUSY LIFE

Postgraduate study Frequently asked questions

When considering a postgraduate course, it is important to also consider the mode of study which best suits your needs. We deliver the equivalent learning experience across all our modes of study, offering a variety of different options, allowing you to gain the qualifications you need in a way that suits you. Full-time study This is the quickest route and requires full attendance for the duration of the programme. Allows you to gain the knowledge and skills you require within the shortest amount of time. Part-time study If you are looking to continue working during your studies or have other commitments, this option allows you to incorporate studying with other responsibilities. Part-time courses run alongside the full-time programmes and split the same modules across the length of the course. Flexible online study If you are unable to study on campus, we offer an online study mode via Campus Moodle, our virtual learning environment. It is a valuable tool that provides an integrated package of resources and facilities to all of our students via the internet. You will be able to interact with fellow students and tutors through innovative technologies including podcasts, videos, chat and discussion forums. You will be taken through an induction by tutors at the beginning of each programme. Find out more about Campus Moodle at: www.rgu.ac.uk/campusmoodle

10 THE PROFESSIONAL UNIVERSITY

Online students have a strong sense of community through the use of discussion forums, chat and group working areas. Some courses also have optional periods of attendance where students are invited on campus to meet fellow students, staff, use facilities and participate in workshops. In order to study online, you will need to have a good internet connection, as well as Microsoft Office. As a rough guide, we would usually recommend that students on an online distance learning course dedicate around 15 hours per week to their studies. Download our guide to online learning at: www.rgu.ac.uk/better-online

I Don’t hold an Undergraduate HONOURS degree, but I do have significant industry experience. Can I Still Apply?

In some cases, applicants who do not hold an Honours degree but who have relevant industry experience over a reasonable time period, may be considered. This is subject to the University’s judgement that the person has reasonable expectation of being able to fulfil the requirements of the award. Since each course has different entry requirements, we recommend you refer to the individual course page on our website. If you are unsure if you meet the entry requirements, you can contact our postgraduate admissions team, who will be happy to answer questions on the application process. Email [email protected] or phone +44 (0)1224 262209.

I WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO WORK full-time WHILST I STUDY. IS THIS POSSIBLE?

Yes. We offer flexible modes of study to suit your needs. Part-time or online courses are available if you are unable to study full-time on campus. The modes of study are listed on the individual course pages on the website of your course of interest.

WHEN IS THE DEADLINE FOR APPLYING FOR A POSTGRADUATE COURSE?

ABOUT robert gordon university QUICK FACTS WHO IS ROBERT GORDON?

RGU TARTAN

Our founder, Robert Gordon was born in 1668 in Aberdeen. He was a merchant trader and philanthropist who amassed his fortune trading from Danzig (Gdansk) in the Baltic.

RGU has its own tartan with colours of Royal Blue, Red and Gold. The tartan was designed by Michael King in 1997. Some students choose to wear a kilt on their graduation day.

OUR MOTTO

A RICH HISTORY spanning 250 years

RGU’s motto is ‘Omni Nunc Arte Magistra’ which can be interpreted as ‘Make the best of all your abilities’.

We have a heritage going back to 1729 when Robert Gordon founded a hospital in Aberdeen for boys from poor families. In 1881, the hospital was transformed into a school and learning institution.

OUR COAT OF ARMS Our coat of arms features on graduation certificates and our flag. Three boars are from the arms of the Gordon family, the castle is from the arms of the City of Aberdeen. A black wavy band symbolises the rivers Dee and Don, as well as North Sea oil, and the heraldic symbols in the centre represent technology (a cog), learning (a flaming torch) and commerce (a gold coin).

THE UNIQUE CULTURE OF ABERDEEN AND THE NORTH EAST of Scotland A TASTE OF ABERDEEN The region offers some delicious local produce. When in Aberdeen, why not try out some of our local specialities? - Butteries/rowies (a flat type of pastry) - Oatcakes or shortbread biscuits - Tablet (a sweet similar to fudge) - A wee dram of local whisky - Cullen skink soup (haddock and potato) - Stovies served with beetroot and oatcakes - Fish supper (battered fish and chips) - Aberdeen Angus steak

Living in Aberdeen has been the best experience of my life. I feel I have achieved so much being here and had a great time in the process. I have classmates from all over the world, but what I have really enjoyed most is getting to know the local people. The Scottish friends I have met here are really friendly and very welcoming! Delcio Henjengo from Angola Mechanical and Electrical Engineering student

- Haggis, neeps and tatties - locally caught salmon, crab or scallops THE LOCAL DIALECT – DORIC We do of course speak English, but why not try out the local dialect, Doric?

Parks and gardens Relax in Aberdeen’s many flower-filled parks and gardens.

Hello, how are you? The usual response to this greeting is ‘Nae bad, yersel?’ Where are you from? You can also be asked ‘Furry Boots?’ which means the same! What nice/bad weather we’re having today!

AFTER YOU APPLY WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? How long will my application take to be processed? We will do our best to give you a decision within 10 working days. Please understand that this time frame alters depending on what course you are applying to and also the time of year that you apply. If you have any queries about your application, we are happy to answer these over the phone or through email. If you have applied online, we will start to process your application as soon as we have received all of the supporting documents that we require. Once we have made a decision we will send you an email confirming this. If you have been successful in your application, you will be able to follow a link from this email to your Offer Letter. How do I accept or decline an offer? When we issue you with an offer by email, you will be able to follow a link to an acceptance/ declination form. The decision sent to you will be one of: • An unconditional offer which means you already satisfy all the academic conditions required before entry and we are offering you a place. • A conditional offer which means you do note yet satisfy the conditions required before entry but you propose to do so. The conditions are given in the offer letter.

I have received a conditional offer, what do I do now? Many students will initially get a conditional offer of acceptance. This means we are happy in principle to accept you to study at Robert Gordon University but you must meet certain conditions first. The most common conditions are: • Completing an existing course (for example passing your Bachelors before coming to do a Masters with us). In this case, you should send us a copy of your final exam results/ degree certificates as soon as they are available. • Non-UK Students Proving that your English Language is good enough for University level study. In this case you should send us a copy of your IELTS or Pearson certificate as soon as it is available • Non-EU full-time Students Making a pre-payment of tuition fees, or paying a deposit. In this case you must arrange to pay a proportion of your tuition fees to the University before we can release an Unconditional Offer.

Getting an Unconditional Offer Once you have fulfilled the conditions of your Conditional Offer, we will issue your Unconditional Offer.

Enrolment INFORMATION If your application is successful and you accept our offer, you will be contacted with information about enrolment before your course begins.

Full-time International students will at this point also be issued with their CAS number and statement. The personal CAS number we issue will link directly to the Visa and Immigration database to facilitate your visa application. Your CAS statement confirms that:

For courses starting in September, enrolment information will be sent out in mid August. For those courses that begin in January, the information will be sent when the University re-opens after the winter break.

• The University is prepared to offer you a place on a course • You have met any academic conditions that were asked of you • You have made a pre-payment of tuition fees/deposit. Regarding pre-payments – this means when we have received your payment in our bank account. This may be several weeks after you transfer it, if you are making an overseas bank transfer. Details of how to pay tuition fees can be found on our website at www.rgu.ac.uk/pgfees
