SONGS (Den & Pack meetings) If You’re Happy

Train Song

Cub Scout Marching

(Tune: "Yankee Doodle')'

(Tune: "This Old Man 'I)

I met an engine on a hill,

This Cub Scout, number one,

All hot and broken hearted,

He sure likes to get things done.

And this is what he said to me,

Chorus

As up the hill he started.

With a knick-knack paddy-wack

Chorus

Give Cub Scouts a chore.

I think I can, I think I can,

This they'll do and ask for more.

At any rate, I'll try.

This Cub Scout, number two,

I think I can, I think I can,

He will do odd jobs for you.

At any rate, I'll try.

(See Cub Scout Songbook for the rest of this song pg.43)

(See Wolf Handbook for the rest of this song, pg.165)

Gathering Activities/Games Treasure Box or Positive Attitude Emergency Kit. Have each cub write a positive thing about each cub, including themselves, on small pieces of paper or craft sticks to put in their kits/boxes. They can write about a time that they felt successful. They can list things to do when they feel down (serve someone else, call a friend, play a game, draw a picture, shoot hoops, etc.) Make some positive quotes/scriptures they can add. Photos from scouting activities, things they’ve drawn or made that help them feel good can be added. Hand Knots http://familyfun.go.com/playtime/hand-knots-706626/ Name That Knot Have knots already tied. Have the boys name the knot by looking at the examples. For a harder version, put them in a bag and see if they can guess them by only feeling the knot. (Any game or relay, especially cooperative, would require a Positive Attitude.)

CHEERS(for Pack theme) Applaud & Cheer: When you raise your right hand: all applaud, when you raise your left hand: all cheer. When you raise both hands, they applaud and cheer at the same time! Sing & Dance Cheer: When the leader’s hand is raised, everyone twists and shouts (or sings in full voice); when the hand is lowered, all is silent (and perhaps frozen in dance position?) Standing Ovation: Make an oval with your arms over your head and say “OOOOOOOHHHHH!“ Bravo Applause: Everyone shouts, "Bravo, Bravo, Bravo!" gradually getting louder. End with huge clapping.

ActivITIES – den & Pack Resource guide *Money, Money, Money Game: See below for idea – uses chutes and ladders ideas. *Twenty Questions: Have cub think of something that makes them happy. Play 20 twenty questions to guess what makes them happy.

*Stick Up:

(SCCC PowWow-Dolllars & Sense- 2002-pg 23)

Select one player to be Sticky Fingers. Start the game by saying, “This is a Stick Up!” as players scatter around the playing area. When Sticky Fingers tags a player, the one tagged must place a hand on the place touched while still continuing to run. As more and more players become “stuck” on themselves, Sticky Fingers has a better chance to totally immobilize one player. Usually, when both hands are a player are stuck, the third touch sticks him with being the next Sticky Fingers.

*Tub Toss: (SCCC PowWow-Dolllars & Sense- 2002-pg 23) Partially fill a large plastic container with water. Float a variety of light saucers in the water and have the boys take turns throwing pennies into them. Or, float a metal/aluminum pie plate in the tub and have the players guess how many pennies it will take to sink the “ship.” The, have the players – one by one – toss a penny into the pie plate until it drops to the depths. The winner is the player who guessed the closest.

*Three Coins in a Fountain: (SCCC PowWow-Dolllars & Sense- 2002-pg 23) Divide the group into 4 even teams. Give each person on the team a number, starting with “1” and continuing in sequence for each team. Position four chairs in a square roughly 15 feet apart for the teams to wait behind. Place some coins in the middle of the square. When you call a number, that player from each team must try to get three coins onto the center of his team’s chair. They may only carry one coin at a time, and must place it on their chair to be easily visible. Once all the coins have disappeared from the center, they may steal coins from other teams.

activities - core values – POSITIVE ATTITUDE Theme Ideas: *Collecting *Knots *Maps *Money *Abracadabra *Core Value Den Leader Minute Read the core value definition for this month. Have the boys answer the following:

Know-- Talk with boys about how we don't always get what we want, or how we are not always the cener of attention. We need to find the good in these situations and focus on that and not what didn't go our way. I personally thnk Positive Attitude and Gratitude go hand in hand. You can't be truly grateful if you have a negative attitude and you can't be grateful and be depressed at the same time either. They just don't go together. You may want to point this out to the boys as well. Practice—Act out situations where the above would apply, such as not getting the main role in a skit or wanting to be the pitcher on a baseball team and getting center field. Make sure they include a Positive Attitude. This will help the boys gain a better understanding of what a positive attitude is. Commit— Have the boys pay special attention this month to things that did NOT go the way THEY wanted. Tell them you want them to share how they felt and thoughts about the situation. Did they have a positve attitude right off or did they have to work at having a positive attitude? (this one is hard for me sometimes!) Review this with them at the end of the month.

*Learn a Rope Trick: (Santa Clara County Council – 2008 Pow Wow) Holding a piece of rope, the magician places the ends of the rope into his hands and closes his fingers around the ends. The magician shakes the rope slightly, says a magic word, blows on his hands and drops one end of the rope. Magic! The end has a knot in it! Supplies: One long piece rope

Secret: The rope already has a knot in one end... Tie a knot in one end of the rope. Hide this end with the knot in your hand and bring the other end of the rope up next to it. Shake your hand as if you're trying to knot it. Drop the end with the knot and it looks like you have tied a knot in the rope using one hand.

*Money, Money, Money Game: This game is just like chutes and ladders. When you spin and move to a ladder, you have just earned some money with allowance, chores or maybe even some birthday money. When you hit a chute you had to buy something or pay for something like a broken window from your baseball. Your game pieces could be the latest trends. Make your game pieces and game board out ot cereal boxes or just a box!

*Homemade Trading Card: http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/artist-trading-cards-1022750/) (This looks like a fun idea and you could use as a preopener every month and then the boys could trade. It the art world, Artist Trading Cards are really popular.)

*fun for the family – Coordinates with the monthly core value & a great way to get it into the home. Character can be defined as the collection of core values possessed by an individual that leads to moral commitment and action. (Cub Scout Leader Book) Strengthening families is one of the purposes of Cub Scouting. Families are the basis of our society. Children learn about love, values, and social interaction in their family. The family is vital to the future of our communities and our country. The Fun For The Family program can be a positive resource to help families build lasting relationships and develop good character.
