China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) is a state-authorized investment agency and a state holding company. INTRoduCTIoN

The Polymer Flooding Technology is to increase the injected water viscosity by adding polymer, i.e. polyacrylamide (such as polysaccharide, etc.) is used to improve the oil to water mobility ratio, expand the sweeping volume of the displacement liquid in the reservoir and enhance the oil recovery. At the early sixties of the last century, CNPC started taking up with the exploration and practice of the Polymer Flooding Technology. Become a developer for setting stands in the field as well as the technological pioneer After over forty years of development and improvement. For oil polymer flooding in high water-cut oilfields, CNPC provides customers with the cost-effective solutions for reservoir engineering, surface engineering, oil production engineering and test engineering.

2.1.1 Polymer Flooding Indoor EvaluationTM Technology The Polymer Flooding Indoor Evaluation Technology includes two main parts: physical and chemical properties detection and evaluation of polymer, and indoor core physical simulation test. The detection and evaluation of physical and chemical properties for polymer is carried on through a test of 11 physical and chemical performance indices of the polyacrylamide used for flooding, and its quality and flooding performance have been evaluated for customers The recovery laboratory of CNPC has passed ISo 9001.

2.2.3 Polymer flooding lifting equipment The polymer flooding lifting equipment ensures the operation efficiently and smoothly while the produced liquid contains polymer. The polymer flooding screw pump is adaptable to lifting the produced liquid of 2-250m3/d with pump efficiency of up to 65%. Polymer flooding pumping unit is able to solve the problem of produced liquid containing polymer that causes severe eccentric wear to the sucker rod, so that significantly extends the operating cycle. This technology has been applied to more than 10,000 wells in total, with an average operating cycle extending to 1,035 days from the original of 325 days.

2.5 Polymer Flooding Agent Production Technologies This technology provides the chemical agents for the use of polymer flooding to meet different needs. Select polymer flooding agents of different properties and specifications according to the requirements of polymer flooding technology, achieving matched injection and ensuring that the polymer flooding reaches the best results. As the biggest flooding-used polyacrylamide supplier, CNPC possessed the chemical production bases in oilfields; it has devoted to research and development activities and production for polymer flooding agents. Since 1996, the equipment for the production of polymer flooding agents was put into service, the production technology has been developing continuously, the production scale has expanded increasingly and the products have upgraded times and again. At present, 26 formats of polymer flooding agents have been produced. The super high molecular weight salt-resistant polyacrylamide products can be used to prepare polymer with sewage that both ensures the crude oil recovery and saves the fresh water resources, consequently saves the cost of sewage disposal. Thus it plays an important role for reducing the oil production cost in oilfields. At the same time, it also addresses the problem of sewage discharge and environmental protection for the oilfield.

TYPICAl CASES

3.1 Polymer Flooding EOR in Multilayered Sandstone Oilfield The heterogeneous multilayered sandstone reservoir developed by water flooding features the average reservoir temperature of 45 ℃, the formation water salinity of 4,000-7,000mg/l, the average crude oil viscosity of 9mPa·s and the serious reservoir heterogeneity. In 1972, a polymer flooding field test was conducted at a small well spacing (well spacing of 75m) and obtained a clear effect of increasing oil and decreasing water under the condition of small dosage of polymer with low molecular weight, the water-cut of oil well dropped from 99% to the lowest of 60.4% and oil recovery increased by 5.1 percentage. In 1991, several polymer flooding industrial field tests were conducted in three block by the ways of wide spacing and multi-well group, resulting in a good results of oil recovery increased by more than 12%. The industrialized application of polymer flooding was started in 1995, as of the end of 2008, it has been applied in 46 blocks with an deployment area of 378.9×107sq ft, geological reserves of 1.45×1012lb and the total number of wells is 7187. In the industrialized promotion blocks, the polymer flooding oil recovery increased by 10 percent as compared with water flooding, the annual oil output by polymer flooding has been exceeded 198×108lb in 7 consecutive years and the cumulative oil production exceeded 2.2×1012lb, in which the polymer flooding oil production rate accounted for 22% of the total production in the oilfield.

3.2 Polymer Flooding EOR in Complex Fault Blocks Shengli oilfield is one of the complex fault block oilfields with high formation temperature of 65-120℃; high formation water salinity of more than 10,000mg/l and high crude oil viscosity of 40-70mPa·s. For the polymer flooding well patterns, the oil production is mostly carried out under the condition of original conventional water injection well patterns.

The first polymer flooding pilot test in Shengli oilfield starting from September 1992 at the third section of zhong-1 unit in Gudao oilfield. This is the first chemical flooding EoR project of CNPC which developed by using conventional injection-production pattern, combined with chemical flooding by mixed fresh water and sewage. on April 2005, 14 projects have been implemented in Gudao oilfield, covering geological reserves of 3.64×1011lb. The annual oil production with polymer flooding reaches 397×107lb, accounted for 45.4% of the annual output in the oil production plant.

3.3 Steam Drive After Polymer Flooding EOR The Kenneyak oilfield above the salt dome started exploiting in 1966 and has been developed nearly 40 years until 2003. however, bad effects of oil field development are caused by the relatively serious heterogeneity of oil reservoir and higher crude oil viscosity. The reservoirs above the salt dome of Kenneyak oilfield are characterized by shallow burid depth, weak bonding of oil layer, and the oil viscosity is higher than 100mPa.s as passed steam-flooding. The upper-salt reservoir injection polymer pilot area has been used a scale of 4 injections and 9 productions, it is put blank water flooding into production in december 2004 and starts injecting polymer solution in May 2006. After 0.237PV is injected in the test area, the water-cut decreases continuously until 78.7% minimum that is dropped by 14.7%. The effects of oil wells are outstanding and the result of oil increase and water decrease has been achieved. According to the result of numerical model simulation, it was expected that the EoR increases of 6.0% and the incremental oil per ton up to 77.2t in polymer test area till 2009. The results of preliminary economic evaluation believes that, the project payback period is only 1.95 years with the input-output ratio of 1:3.5.
