a trusted resource for horticultural knowledge Greentop founder, Christopher DeRosa began his career in Horticulture in 1968. His experience as a landscape designer of naturalistic gardens led to the start of a Nursery business specializing in Bamboo plants in 1989. The New England Bamboo Company quickly gained the reputation for high quality plant material and superior customer service for the wholesale (retail) trade.

Harvard University, Cambridge MA – Stoss Landscape Urbanism

In 2005, Greentop LLC was formed to consolidate the Bamboo Nursery, Design and Consulting Services and a new Planter Division, manufacturing insulated planters. The Planter Division was created as an answer to problems frequently experienced by architects and landscape designers; “ How can I prevent root injury on plants during the winter months, when planted in planters on the terrace or rooftop?”, or “ How can I reduce the heat stress that occurs on plants during the summer months?” The solution was to create a lightweight, durable, insulated planter that kept soil temperatures stable, conserving moisture and preventing root injury. Greentop’s “Ecolite” and “Terrafirm” Planters promote plant health and vigor; healthy plants live longer and sustain landscape designs that benefit the environment. Architects and designers have the opportunity to use these hybrid planting vessels that minimize plant stress, conserve water and maximize the Oxygen/CO2 exchange that benefits our lives.

greentop planters The value of insulation in temperate and tropical areas has been well documented. Our Ecolite and Terrafirm planter use insulation (R-14) to protect plants from root damage caused by extreme temperature modulations in cold months or tropical heat.

The Greentop Planter System has been designed to meet the needs of today’s architects and landscape designers with a lightweight insulated planter that offers a diverse range of external finishes. Our planters are part of a new generation of environmentally conscience products that optimize the health and vigor of plants.

Plant health and vigor are greatly improved in insulated planters—plantings do not need to be replaced seasonally. Our insulated planters qualify for LEED accreditation.

We offer the only insulated planters available for the horticultural industry.

The Ecolite and Terrafirm planters can be used in any interior or exterior application. Our factory can produce standard rectangles up to 20’ in length and 4' in width. We can build radius curves, ellipses or any configuration you can design.

The Greentop Planter Division began production in 2005 after extensive engineering and field development of the Ecolite and Terrafirm planter series. The Ecolite planter series are ideal for plantings up to 10’ in height and the Terrafirm planters are recommended for taller plantings up to 15' in height. The Terrafirm planters can be used for plants over 15' when used with our ‘Surefoot’ stabilization system.

Planter Frame Ecolite and Terrafirm planters are constructed using an anodized aluminum frame and structurally insulated panels or SIPS. They are light in weight, yet very strong and durable, providing exceptional insulation qualities. The core of our panels consists of high density expanded polystyrene (EPS) which is covered on both sides with fiberglass panels. The EPS core gives tremendous shear strength while the aluminized fiberglass “skin” provides high compressive strength and puncture resistance. We use a partially recycled EPS product that is inert and fire resistant. It will not rot, is resistant to mildew and provides no food value to animals.

Ecolite Planters

The Ecolite planter series are designed for plantings up to 10’ in height and provide a perfect habitat for small trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials. The Ecolite 2” panel walls protect plantings from root damage and conserves water. Ecolite planters come equipped with our standard bottom flow drainage system and offer an insulation value of 12. They are ideal for use on terraces, entryways, rooftop gardens or green roofs.

Terrafirm Planters The Terrafirm planter series are for taller plantings up to 15’ in height. The 3” thick panel walls are designed for large evergreens, deciduous trees, shrubs and offer an insulation value of R18. It comes equipped with our standard drain system.

surface treatments Our Ecolite and Terrafirm planters are finished in a standard white or tan color when the manufacturing process is complete. You can choose from a wide array of surface treatments to customize your planters with seamless or textured surfaces in painted, faux or oxidized finishes. Planters can also be clad with metal, stone or translucent panels.

Seamless The first step in selection of a finish is to decide whether you want a seamless or exposed frame planter. Our exposed frame planter is standard on our Ecolite and Terrafirm planters. Our seamless planter finish covers all surfaces to create a monolithic form.

Texture

Rust oxidized finish

Surface texture can be applied to our planters to create plaster, stucco, tile or weathered appearances. Finishes match existing surfaces or we can produce any texture to satisfy your design needs.

Benjamin Moore paints with our ‘Protect’ sealer to harden painted surfaces. Colors are available in matte, semi matte, semi gloss and gloss finishes.

Painted

Faux and Restorative

Ecolite or Terrafirm planters can be painted virtually any color. We use California and

Faux finishes are used to replicate stone, metal, wood or clay surfaces. Our artisans have the experience to recreate the texture and complexity of objects and replicate architectural elements such as finials, moldings, seals, crests and imaginative turnings.

Oxidized Metals Are you looking for a blue or green patina in bronze or copper or a rusted iron finish? Through a ‘live oxidation’ process we can produce any patina and texture you need. Our ‘metal effects’ can be applied directly on our standard Ecolite and Terrafirm planters to transform them to an age worn surface. Our method involves etching the surface with a primer coat and then seeding the surface to begin the oxidation (patina) process. We stop the patina at the desired effect and then seal the surface to prevent further oxidization and staining of clothing when touched. Red lacquer finish

Claddings Metal

Ecolite and Terrafirm planters can be clad in metal or stone bonded directly to the planter frame. The metal panels that we offer are aluminum, steel, zinc, copper and tin. Silver and gold are select alternatives. For panel selection of our most popular metal claddings please visit www.alucoacladdingsystems.com.

Stone Are you looking for a blue or green patina? The stone claddings that we recommend for our planters are stone veneer panels that are light weight and extremely durable. These panels combine the aerospace technology of aluminum honeycomb construction with a stone veneer, creating a product that is lightweight, incredibly strong and lower in cost then solid stone. These stone panels weigh only 3.3 lbs. / sq. ft. (16kg/sq. m.). They weigh 75% less than 1” of solid stone and resist 60 times the force of impact. Aluminum honeycomb-reinforced panels are impervious to water penetration even with open structured stones such as travertine, limestone, slate and marble. The fiberglass reinforced epoxy skin directly behind the stone provides a waterproof barrier. Stress-relieved stone eliminates the warping and brittleness experienced with solid stone. Using stone panels with our planters contributes to LEED points.

On Site Construction Greentop planters can also be constructed on site for larger planter applications. The light weight of the Greentop planter allows for a wider range of use on rooftops, especially existing roofs whose structures have not been designed to carry loads of a contemporary rooftop planting infrastructure. As a modular “kit of parts”, the Greentop planter can be delivered in sections to rooftops via elevator rather than crane, offering cost savings for renovations, as well as new construction. Greentop planters are expandable to virtually any square or rectangular dimension or configuration which makes possible the installation of large planters in areas of limited access. Complete Assistance – We will provide the design and technical assistance necessary to bring your concepts into a well-executed plan. Manufacture and installation by Greentop makes certain that these planters will last for decades. We are so confident about the quality and durability of our product that we offer a 25 year quality guarantee. 100% of goods and manufacturing are done in the USA.

Green Roof Planters Our Green Roof planter series combines either the Ecolite or Terrafirm planter with our ‘Green Drain’ passive irrigation system. The result is a water conservative planting vessel that mitigates storm runoff by collecting moisture in the bottom of the planter. The fibrous roots of the plants take water from the soil/water interface 3” above the bottom of the planter. Channels on the sidewalls allow air to circulate to the water in the ‘Green Drain’ sump and flow through the soil in the planter.
