PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO CAMEROON 1. Find out from David Ballard the date and courses that you will be teaching and what days you will be entering and exiting Cameroon. 2. The cost of the trip will be as follows: Total Need - $2750 to $3000 A. all shots and medications around $300 B. VISA cost - $124 plus mailing costs up to $37 C. flight tickets between $1800 and $2400 D. room and meals 1. stay in Elangwe’s home - $25 per day (this includes meals) (pay Elangwe) 2. stay in a hotel in Limbe - $55 per day for the room and two meals + $5 for one meal at Elangwe’s - $60 per day (send funds to Elangwe in advance so that he can make the reservations) E. transport to and from the airport (paid to Elangwe) $80 F. exiting airport tax $30 (pay this when you leave in frs) G. spending money, emergency money ($200 up) H. offering and benevolence (your choice)

3. Make sure you have an up to date passport with blank pages.

4. Make sure you have all of your shots and medications in place. A. Yellow Fever Shot – REQUIRED! You must show documentation of your immunizations to receive a VISA and to be able to enter the country. (bring your yellow health card) B. Other shots are NOT required, but recommended: (do not go without them) Hepatitis A; Hepatitis B; Typhoid; Polio; Meningococcal (meningitis) C. Malaria pills Malaria is very common in Cameroon, so having the proper medication is highly recommended. (do not go without it) There are a variety of medications and prices. Consult your doctor about which medication is best for you and best for Cameroon.

5. Get a “Letter of Invitation” from Brother Elangwe You will need to receive a letter of initiation from the Church of Christ Wotutu that has been signed by Brother Elangwe and by the Cameroonian police before you can get your VISA and be allowed to enter the country. You can contact Brother Elangwe once your dates are set and he will get it prepared for you and e-mail it to you. His e-mail address is [email protected] He will need your first, middle, and last name and your city, state, and country.

6. Purchase Your Airline Tickets A. The final destination is Douala International Airport; Douala, Cameroon B. You can book this yourself or use a travel agent. Make sure your dates are confirmed with the coordinator David Ballard and you have received your letter of invitation from Brother Elangwe that has been signed by the Cameroon police before you book your flight. D. Tickets have varied from $1800 - $2400 round trip. You may choose to add travel insurance. That could cost another $90 to $140. E. The actual flying time is around 14-18 hours, depending on where you are flying from. It can be 30 or more hours from the time you leave your house until the time you reach Wotutu. This is including your automobile travel time, layover time, and so on. F. A Typical Flight would be from the U.S. to Brussels or France, and then on to Douala.

Get two passport photos. Fill out the two visa applications.

Get a money order/cashier's check made out to the Embassy of Cameroon (around $124) You can ask her how much the fee is.

Write a personal check to Tonya for her service. (around $35-$40) You can ask her. Send all of this to Tonya choosing overnight delivery and also a return envelope back to you. The cost will be around $18 both ways from Post Office. You can ask the post office. This is the safest way, but will insure you getting the parcel to her and return. Of course, include your passport, a copy of each page of your yellow international health card, a letter of invitation from Brother Elangwe, and a copy of your flight itinerary.

I like to apply for my VISA early. She is very helpful.

8. Food & Lodging (If you stay in Brother Elangwe’s home.) A. Sister Magdalene (Elangwe’s wonderful wife) or a hired chef will cook all three tasty meals B. The meals will be great and they will insure everything is sanitary. C. Elangwe really looks out for your health. Follow his advice. D. They provide plenty of bottled water. Do not drink tap water. E. Take some snacks (breakfast bars/granola bars, etc) if you want extra food. Always drink bottled water; even for brushing teeth F. Elangwe has indoor plumbing and a fan where you stay. This includes a toilet, a sink, and a shower. You will not need bedding or towels. You will need flip flops for the restroom and shower. You may want to bring a small package of tissues, wet-wipes, and a roll of toilet paper.

9. Electronic Information A. Elangwe has some power strips that allow our plugs to fit (two and three pronged) so that your laptop and chargers will be able to plug in at his house or at the school. B. They have a power point projector if you want to bring your laptop and teach with that. They also have a white board. C. Elangwe has internet access at the school office using his laptop, but is unable to get your laptop on-line. He will let you use his laptop to get on-line. He does have skype capabilities. D. There is a Cameroon missionary phone that you can use to text very cheaply or call America for a few cents a minute. You will need give Elangwe money to have minutes added to this phone. He will let you carry it with you during your stay in Cameroon.

10. Clothing A. You are close to the equator so it is usually hot and humid. B. It gets rainy so it is good to have at least a light jacket.

C. During the raining season, it could easily rain every day. (June, July, August) D. Preaching in a suit and tie is common, but it is not required. You need to teach the short course in at least a shirt and tie.

11. Hospitals A. There is a hospital about 25 minutes away. They do a very good job and the facilities are well kept.

The Embassy Branch Office in Douala is located on the corner of Rue Ivy and Rue French in the Ecobank Building in Bonanjo. C. Emergency Services - American Citizen Services hours are Monday through Thursday, 09:00 – 12:00 and 13:00 - 15:00, and Friday 09:00-11:00. Please note, that if a monetary transaction needs to be made, the cashier closes 30 minutes prior to the hours listed above. After hours during the week and on weekends, a duty officer is available for emergencies only.

(this is on the coast North West of Douala). C. Elangwe will be at the airport to pick you up. Please e-mail him a photo of yourself in what you will be wearing so he can identify you. Just go through the entrance routine, get your bags without help from others if possible, and head to the exit. Elangwe will be there waiting or you.
