A Silver Celebration 25 shining years…. This evening is our sparkling precious gift to you and yours – the celebration of our Silver Anniversary - 25 years of your never-ending patronage and loyalty. Thank you for being with us tonight to share this very special occasion with Miami’s hometown symphony. We are continually saddened when we hear of the news of many renowned national and international orchestras, many decades old, closing their doors during these difficult times. In these extraordinary circumstances, we have been so very fortunate to have the ongoing support of many benefactors who have also become our friends. Our Board of Directors has given their gifts of time, talent, and treasure, while engaging our community, corporate sponsors, and other organizations which understand that the “magic” city of Miami needs an Orchestra of its own - The Miami Symphony Orchestra. My gratitude extends to our musicians and small staff whose undying commitment and dedication have allowed us to continue to offer you the exemplary music and programs that you have come to expect and enjoy – and without whom, there would be no “music.” Who says that there isn’t a “silver lining?” We’re here, plan on staying, and will continue to shine because of you.

E

duardo Marturet enjoys an active career on three continents. As the Music Director and Conductor of The Miami Symphony Orchestra, he remains deeply involved in the musical life of his native Venezuela and continues to guest conduct actively in Europe. He has made more than 40 CDs that range from a Brahms orchestral cycle to surveys of Latin America’s greatest orchestral composers. European orchestras with which he has had an active guest conducting relationship include Berliner Symphoniker, European Community Chamber Orchestra, Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, RAI Symphony Orchestra, Danish Radio Symphony, Royal Flemish Philarmonique, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Gelders Orkest, Bohemian Chamber Philharmonic, Budapest Radio Symphony, Brabant Orkest, and Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra in Amsterdam. In 2001, he led the Berliner Symphoniker on a 12-concert tour of major South American cities including Caracas, Sao Paulo, Cordoba, Montevideo and Buenos Aires. A documentary of the tour was broadcast through the region by DirecTV. Born in Caracas, Marturet studied in Cambridge, England where he became firmly rooted in the European tradition, obtaining a degree in Piano, Percussion, Conducting, and Composition. In 1979, he returned to Venezuela with a permanent position with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Caracas as Associate Conductor and later as Artistic Director to the Orquesta Sinfónica Venezuela, where he served in that position until 1995. Presently, he maintains close contact with the Venezuelan National Youth Orchestra movement, giving advice and support in aid of poor children. With the opening of the Teresa Carreño Theatre in Caracas in 1984, Marturet became its first Music Director. After three years of bringing challenging and original productions to the stage, he resigned from the Theatre to dedicate himself entirely to an international career, conducting in Italy, Greece, France, Spain, England, Denmark, Holland, Korea, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Canada and the United States. He made his Asian debut with the Seoul Philharmonic in 2003, a year when he also opened the Chorin Summer Festival in Berlin and made his debut with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic in Argentina and the Florida Philharmonic in Miami. In 2006, received a Latin Grammy nomination for “Encantamento” in the category of Best Classical Album conducting the Berliner Symphoniker. In March 2012 the flag of the United States was flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of Eduardo Marturet, together with the Medal of Merit of the U.S. Congress in recognition for his outstanding and invaluable service to the community.

“Two readings of Waldo” Sponsored by

T

he work of an artist – visual or musical - is very personal, to both the artist and his or her admirers. Having admired the work of Waldo Balart for many years, the opportunity to compose music inspired by his art was only natural, especially for the celebration of our 25th Anniversary season opening. A music director premiering his own composition for such an important occasion – yes, I agree, somewhat unorthodox. So I hope you will indulge me as I present this composition as my gift and gesture of deep gratitude and admiration, not only for Mr. Balart but for Miami’s audience who has always appreciated Miami Symphony’s adventurous programming, and for my fellow colleagues for sharing my vision of an extraordinary musical journey that has encouraged us to continue exploring together.

2013/2014 SEASON A Crystal Clear Celebration

GRAND SEASON OPENING Sunday, October 20, 2013 - 8:00 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall

“Two Readings of Waldo,” a musical composition that very closely follows the artist’s assigned color codes in his paintings, is synchronous with my subjective correlation of the musical tones. Red is always represented musically by the note “A” and Purple by “F” sharp, two examples of the chromatic scale.

Sponsored by Evelyn & Ignacio Oberto

The music, conceived to be performed in sync with the corresponding images of Waldo’s paintings, is structured in two parts, Bio-Electric Energy and Bio-Magnetic Energy. The first closely follows geometric rationality giving firm structure to Waldo’s work, the second an irrational and intuitive answer.

I

My inspiration to create an Homage to Waldo Balart and his artistic achievements was elementary, as I easily recognized the parallels to the Diaz-Balart family’s great contribution to American culture and beyond. And, most importantly, I extend my gratitude to Rafael Diaz-Balart, as in his family’s tradition, he has provided unprecedented dedication, patience, and leadership as Miami Symphony’s Chairman for 15 years. The special appearance by members of the Greater Miami Youth Orchestra, performing this evening in the lobby of the Knight Concert Hall, also has “two readings.” One represents the perennial presence of visual art against the ephemeral presence of music which dies instantly after it is born. The other is the reminder that the future of these children as professional musicians lies totally in our hands… Eduardo Marturet, October 2013.
