Ronald Earl Wilsher What if there was a way for you to “position” yourself in the eyes of everyone you know as “the” EXPERT? What if you could ATTRACT customers or clients to you and your business (seemingly at will!) instead of spending all your time, money and energy chasing them, trying to get them to notice you? Sound impossible? Well, it’s not impossible. There IS a way and it’s something that major corporations and big “brands” have known and used for years. What is it you ask? It’s called BRANDING and its very powerful and lucrative if done right but until now, it’s been all but unavailable to you and me as individuals or small business owners because of the cost/capital barrier. But with the advent and explosive growth of the Internet and Social Media, everything has changed. All the rules are off. Never has there been a better time for you to build your BRAND and do it with amazing speed, accuracy and precision.

Attract and engage is better than chase and convince. TM Once you FULLY understand this principle, the way you live your life and how you make money will drastically change for the better. Guaranteed. So what IS this “branding” that we all keep hearing so much about? Simply put, your “brand” is a collection of thoughts and perceptions that everyone has about you in their mind. Marty Neumeier, in his book “Brand Gap” stated that “A BRAND is a person’s ‘gut’ feeling about a product, service or organization.” What “gut” feeling does someone get when YOUR name or business is mentioned? Does your BRAND compel people to buy or say good things about

you? What are you doing NOW to enhance YOUR BRAND? Do you even HAVE a BRAND?

The higher your expert status, the less you have to negotiate. The following quote is from Discover Magazine, a publication of The YMCA and it pretty much sums up what a ‘personal brand’ is: “Your brand is your essence…what you stand for, why you’re different, and why anyone should care… It’s your promise and then how you deliver on that promise through [your] behaviors and the way you talk…” Personal Brand equals Personal Reputation, pure and simple so ya gotta ask yourself a couple of questions: How important is my reputation to me and how much am I willing to invest in it? Your personal ‘Brand Equity’ and ‘Social Capital’ may someday soon be worth more than your house and it’s fast becoming the currency of The New Brand World. You may wanna pay close attention from here on out. Ask Brad Pitt, Oprah or Madonna if having an attractive and powerful personal BRAND is important. Think about it because it could be one of the most lucrative and rewarding things you ever do. So what’s the goal of Personal Branding? In its purest form, you want “position” yourself as the EXPERT so that you ATTRACT as many people possible who are eager to buy or help you spread your message instead having to spend all your time, money and energy trying to convince them come to you.

When this happens, not only do you expend less energy, (and have more fun!) they are much more inclined to buy, be more loyal to you and your BRAND and most importantly, become a loyal friend who will willingly and enthusiastically tell everyone they know about you. The best way to position yourself as the ‘expert’ in your profession is to take all the knowledge and experience outta your head and put it out in many different forms as possible so that it’s working for you 24/7 to raise your expert status and attract opportunity. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that in today’s competitive and challenging business environment the traditional notion of “job security” is a myth. Dave Lakhani, author of the bestselling book “Persuasion ~ The Art of Getting What You Want” said, “You must be seen to sell and money follows action.” If you wanna be highly visible and make yourself indispensible either to the company you work for or to the customers or clients you serve, my suggestion is to learn the fine art of self-promotion and use Social Media to raise your expert status, build your personal BRAND and attract people to you. Tom Peters, bestselling author of the book “In Search of Excellence” and world renowned BRAND guru in an article titled “It’s a New Brand World” stated, “Big companies understand the importance of brands. Today, in the Age of the Individual, you have to be your own BRAND. It's time for me -- and you -- to take a lesson from the big brands, a lesson that's true for anyone who's interested in what it takes to stand out and prosper in the new world of work.” I couldn’t agree more, Mr. Peters. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but everything has changed. The way we’re all accustomed to doing business is dramatically different today than just a few years ago. I talked to a friend of mine the other day and he said, “It seems that everything I’ve done in the last sixteen years doesn’t seem to work anymore.” Are you feeling the same thing in YOUR business? All the rules are off. What does that mean for you and me? It means that we can make our OWN rules! How kewl is that? Wow. Just imagine, we no longer have to compete with or against the “Status Quo.” The “Status Quo” is fast losing its status. I don’t know about you, but I MUCH prefer to compete with ME! It’s more important now than ever before to build your personal BRAND and because of the proliferation of the Internet and Social Media, it’s also much easier and less expensive than you may have thought. It’s also a TON of fun. Now I don’t know about you but I ain’t ever had too much fun! I’m gonna give you several things you can do NOW to enhance your BRAND that will not only help you position yourself as the EXPERT in your field and raise your visibility and credibility but they will also help you ATTRACT more friends/clients/customers and set you apart from the vast majority of your competition. Are you ready? Then let’s do it!

1. Register and secure your PERSONAL name and do it NOW! This is the foundation of everything you’ll do as you build your personal BRAND. Go to: www.WilsherMedia.com (my affiliate account through GoDaddy) or a reputable registrar of your choice and register your PERSONAL name as a dot com. This will take about ten minutes and will cost you about $15 a year. I can’t over emphasize the importance of this simple branding strategy. What is more PERSONAL than your name? Most registrars even provide FREE email and you don’t even need a web site. If you use WilsherMedia.com, call or email me and I’ll help you set up your email and show you some other waykewl! stuff you can do with your dot com. (Ex: RonaldWilsher.com/Facebook, RonaldWilsher.com/Twitter) Fun! If you already have a web site, I still suggest that your register your PERSONAL name. This one step will open up the entire web to you and will be the very foundation from which you can build an online empire. If you don’t currently have a web site or Blog, you can set up a CUSTOM Landing Page with your personal email address and links to all your social media sites. Why is it so important to register your name and begin using it immediately as your email address? Several reasons. First of all, you IMMEDIATELY raise your EXPERT status every time you send an email or give someone your email address. Second, what’s the sweetest sound in the world to your ears? That’s right. The sound of your name! Once your register your PERSONAL name, every time you send someone (a properly BRANDED) email with your name and picture on the banner or template, they’ll get to see your beautiful face, say your amazing name and your expert status is greatly enhanced even BEFORE you talk or meet. A very simple and powerful way to build your BRAND! If you already have your company name registered, that’s good but it’s STILL important to register your OWN name because BrandU is much more powerful than BrandCo and dealing with a real PERSON is more attractive than dealing 4

with the perception of a “not so personal” company. Besides, companies come and go but hopefully YOU won’t. At least until it’s your time. Another reason to register your name is so you’ll never have to change your email address again. How much do you get paid to update all of your friend’s email addresses every time they change them? Yeah, that’s what I thought. When you have your name registered, you’ve just made it real easy for everyone to remember your email and web site address and you’ve also just enhanced your position in everyone’s mind as THE expert. I like doing business with people who know what they’re doing. How about you? Ask Oprah.com, LouisVuitton.com, Elvis.com, KateSpade.com, Reba.com or EddieBauer.com if registering your PERSONAL name is important in building your PERSONAL brand. Besides, how much does Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL or any other ISP pay you each month to advertise for them and build THEIR brand? That’s what I thought. I could list many more reasons but suffice to say, just do it. You’ll be glad you did and you can thank me later.

Your PERSONAL name may well become the single most valuable piece of DIGITIAL real estate you ever own.

Do it now! 2. Start an E-mail list and do it NOW! A simple email list is the easiest and most inexpensive way I’ve found to help you stay in touch with the people you know and build your BRAND. Remember the old saying, “You’re only as good as your Rolodex?” It meant that you’re only as good as the people you know and stay in contact with. An email list is “the Rolodex” of “The New Brand World” and is a very simple and PERSONAL way to keep in touch with everyone you know and all the new friends and business associates you’re sure to attract as you add value and build your brand.

Jonas Ridderstrale and Kjell Nordstrom in their book “Funky Business” stated, “Nothing the slightest bit amazing has ever happened in isolation. Individual competitiveness equals WHAT you know times WHO you know.” It’s absolutely imperative that you stay connected and you must do it in a manner that will appeal to the new generation of young and intelligent people who are fast taking control of your wallet. If you don’t start communicating with the “young folk” the way they wanna be communicated with, you and your business will surely die a painful death. Period. End of story. There are a wide variety of email management tools available from Aweber.com to Infusionsoft.com to MailChimp. I personally use MailChimp and highly recommend it. Or you can use TinyLetter.com which is the LITE version of MailChimp. Choose one that’s simple and allows you to personalize and BRAND your “template” and opt-in/out forms so you can add your picture and other contact information. Don’t be afraid of being YOU and letting your REAL personality show. The more authentic you are, the more attraction power you have. One note of caution: PLEASE don’t call your email list your “data base” or your “email list.” Put your brilliant mind to work and come up with something that compliments your BRAND. For instance, my email list is called my “WayKewl! Friends” list. I have a doctor friend who calls her list her “20/20 Club.” Guess what SHE does for a livin’? I have another good friend who calls his list his “Extrie Special Friends” list and another who calls her list the “inList”. See what I mean? As Rita Mae Brown said, “The reward for conformity is that everyone likes you except yourself.” Amen to that, Miss Rita Mae! Everything you do online (and a LOT of stuff offline) from here to eternity is being recorded and documented for your great, great, great grandchildren to see. Every time you click SEND, you’re either adding to or subtracting from your “brand equity.” Think about it. After registering your PERSONAL name as a dot com, your personal email list may be one of the most valuable assets you ever develop. If all you ever do is register your personal name and start an email list so you can stay in touch with people, I’m confident you’ll be miles ahead of anyone in your industry. How powerful is that?

Do it now! 3. Join the Social Media revolution and do it NOW! It seems the latest ‘thang’ everyone is talking about is “Social Media” and everywhere you go somebody is talkin’ about it. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Tumblr and tons more. So what exactly is “Social Media” and how can you use it to enhance your expert status and build your brand to attract more business? Pure and simple, social media is a giant online party. It’s all about easy and affordable access to the masses. It’s never been possible before now and putting your name and face in front of literally millions of people has never been easier. Social Media has removed the “capital barrier” and allows anyone to “start a conversation” with the world. How many people have you ever bought anything from or sold anything to without talking to them first? Social media is simply an online version of real life with the added benefit of being able to easily keep in contact with large numbers of people who share the same interest and views. It also provides an easy way to build a friendship with like-minded people. As media mogul Rupert Murdoch stated in a recent Forbes article; “People are no longer content to be a passive audience. They insist on being participants, on creating their own material and finding others who want to read, listen and watch.” Social media is the perfect medium to accomplish this goal.

Engagement is the new promotion. As I mentioned, there are tons of social media sites to choose from but YouTube, Twitter and Facebook (800+ million users) get 95% of my time and I think they’ll give you the “biggest bang for your buck.” I suggest that you find a site that you enjoy and learn how to use it. Get comfortable with one and don’t try to learn them all at once. Speaking as your client or customer, “I’m not interested in your business or what you have to offer until I know more about YOU, if I like you, and whether or not I can trust you.” We all basically think and feel the same way, yes?

Social Media sites are a great way to be “transparent” with people and give them an easy and convenient way to get to know the REAL you at THEIR leisure. Once someone gets to know you, they are much more likely to become your friend, do business with you and help you share your message with the world. What if you could hire someone that would work for you seven days a week, twenty four hours a day and never take a break. They never asked for a raise and never took any sick leave. All this person ever did was tell everyone how kewl you are. How much would that person be worth to you? Well, that’s Social Media. If you already consider yourself to be an expert in your field, you have TONS of knowledge and “expert status” already in your head and it doesn’t do you any good until you start talking to someone. It’s about emotionally and intellectually connecting with other people and forming concrete relationships. In the year 2020, I’ll wake up and see every single job description on earth say, “Must have proficiency, influence and followers in Social Media.” I think you’re on to something there, Mr. Dan! Go immediately to: Twitter.com and secure your PERSONAL name. You can also secure your company name. (You can ask me why later.) It’s FREE and will take only a few minutes of your time. 4. Post some videos on YouTube and do it NOW! How would you like to have your very own TV station? How waykewl! would that be? Well, you now have that option. It’s called YouTube.com. Think about it, darlin’. Most people learn and retain information five times better by hearing rather than just reading. YouTube.com is the third most popular site in the world according to Alexa.com (after Google and Facebook) with over 3 BILLION views per day. Yes, that’s three BILLION views a day. There are approximately forty (40) hours per MINUTE of video being uploaded and according to the latest statistics, the average time spent on site per visitor is 43 minutes. Wow! Due to the proliferation of broadband/hi-speed Internet access, video is fast becoming one of the most powerful ways to build “brand equity” and spread your message. But don’t think your video has to be professional quality. Again, the more authentic, the better. The more people see and know about you, the REAL you, the more likely they are to become your friend, tell others about you and do business with you. Transparency and authenticity are powerful attractants in the new brand world and there are MANY video hosting sites available for FREE. Visibility creates opportunity and videos are an excellent way to increase the visibility of you and your company. They are also a great way to enhance the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) of your web site or Blog. You can post them on social media sites and tons of other places. (Be sure and ask me about the MUCH more natural and powerful ORGANIC optimization.) You can even start your own radio show on BlogTalkRadio.com and your own TV show on uStream.tv. What a fantastic time to be alive, eh? Chris Brogan, Personal Branding and Social Media guru and President of New Marketing Labs stated in a recent article, “If you are not building small powerful networks of some kind, get started. Now. Nothing is a solo sport any longer.” Great suggestion, Mr. Brogan! What better way to add value, SHOW your story and build your Brand Equity than by doing it LIVE and in living color? Talk to anyone at the top of their field, from a corporate president to an Olympic or professional athlete and they’ll tell you the vital importance of having a personal coach or mentor. If you want to literally cut YEARS off your learning curve, find someone who has been before you and let them guide you. Bob Nardelli, former President and CEO of Home Depot stated, “I absolutely believe that people, unless coached, never reach their maximum capabilities.” I’ve always believed that you can GREATLY accelerate your learning curve by leveraging the experience of others and having the guidance and expertise of a competent coach or mentor. I would never have even considered jumping out of an airplane, driving a race car or becoming a top producer in real estate without first seeking the advice and guidance of an expert. This is a very simple and FREE service that will help you in several ways including, increasing your SEO, spreading your social media footprint and enhancing your expert status. Register your name as a dot com and once your website or landing page gets indexed by Google, your personal NAME will (generally) appear at the bottom of the first page. A very powerful way to POSITION yourself as the EXPERT in your industry or niche. Not a bad return for a few minutes of your time, eh? Do YOU know what happens when someone types YOUR name into Google or any other search engine? If not, NOW may be a good time to start knowin’. You can also set up a Google+ profile. This is Google’s second attempt to combat the juggernaut known as Facebook and another excellent way to expand your social footprint.

Write a book and become a published Author

Most experts agree that there is nothing you can do to enhance your BRAND and position yourself as the EXPERT that is more powerful than becoming a published author. The prestige and status enjoyed by the published author in our society is literally unparalleled. A book can bring recognition, visibility and credibility and open the door to multiple sources of passive income that were previously unavailable. Peggy Noonan, a bestselling author and columnist for The Wall Street Journal stated in a recent article; “I suspect reading is about to make a big comeback in America, that in fact we're going to be reading more books in the future, not fewer. A lot of adults are going to be more in search of guidance and inspiration.” Talk about opportunity. Wow! Books have always been held in high regard and were once considered “sacred” because only the very affluent of society could purchase them. Just a few hundred years ago most people could not read or write so to be an author meant you were an educated person. Many of those perceptions still hold true today. Sam Horn, in her book “Tongue Fu!” stated “I’ve never met an author who is sorry they wrote their book. They’re only sorry that didn’t write it sooner.” Speaking from personal experience, all I can say is “Amen to that, Miss Sam!” There are many options available to the aspiring writer so do your due diligence before you begin. Having your own book could be one of the most rewarding and lucrative things you ever do to enhance your BRAND and position yourself as the EXPERT in your field. Whether you choose to publish your book in electronic form or in traditional print, there’s never been a better time for action than now.

Do it now! I’ll conclude by saying that the whole purpose of me writing this book and sharing it with you is very simple. I simply want you to THINK. You have a brilliant mind and if you use it, it’ll amaze you but just as importantly, I want you to DO something. Take some action! Remember, you can correct something, you can’t correct nothing. We’ve all heard the old saying: “If you continue to think the way you’ve always thought, you’ll continue to get what you’ve always got.” The question you have to ask yourself is this; Are you happy with your current results? If so, keep doing what you’re doing. If not, you may wanna consider an alternative and explore your options.

NOTHING you’ve just read is either true OR false. Huh? The TRUTH is whatever meaning YOU give it so listen to your brain and follow your heart. “That’s the way we’ve always done it” is the key that unlocks the door to irrelevance and oblivion and if you’ve read this far, I don’t think you’re a candidate for that place.
