The Gift Of Life For Zhayna

P

ersistent breathing problems challenged Zhayna all her life. She was born with respiratory distress syndrome. She contracted pneumonia twice as an infant. Her parents, Jenifer and Anthony, were told she had chronic asthma. But Zhayna would be in and out of the hospital with asthma attacks or pneumonia until April 2003—when, at seven-years-old, doctors finally found a diagnosis that fit. “They tested her for anything and everything under the sun,” recalled her mom. “When they tested her for surfactant protein deficiency, that came back positive.” Surfactant protein deficiency is a rare lung disease that causes coughing and difficulty breathing, among other symptoms. But it was only part of the picture. A lung biopsy revealed more: interstitial restrictive lung disease, which causes scarring of lung tissue and affects breathing and oxygen supply to the bloodstream. In nearly every case, the scarring is irreversible. Zhayna was going to need a lung transplant. “Doctors gave us a life span of 2-3 years,” Jenifer remembers. In March of 2010, the third year, Zhayna’s body began retaining carbon dioxide and she

“If she didn’t have a transplant by summer, she would be too sick to undergo the surgery. We were right at that borderline...” started to get worse. “Her pulmonologist back home in Tacoma, Washington, said that if she didn’t have a transplant by summer, she would be too sick to undergo the surgery. We were right at that borderline when it came.” At the end of April, 11-year-old Zhayna received a double lung transplant, which her mother and step-father, Matthew, describe as “The Best Gift.” But, she contracted RSV, a common virus. Her post-transplant IV infusions, which help fight rejection, were delayed. It wasn’t long, however, before she was well enough to begin infusions on an

outpatient basis while staying at Ronald McDonald House. When Jenifer quit work to bring Zhayna to Palo Alto, she left Matthew behind to continue working and take care of their other daughters, 13-year-old Zephra, and seven-year-old Haley-Kay. Now that it’s summer, the girls have come to stay at the House. “It’s been tough,” said Matthew, “I don’t really do the Mr. Mom thing. Jen’s usually there to get the kids ready for school. Now it’s up to me to tell them to wake up, get ready for school, eat your breakfast. It’s been a challenge, but everything’s worked out.” Jenifer is quick to mention one reason the family has been able to hold it together: “I’m very thankful for the House and the recovery that Zhayna has gotten here. It’s mainly the experience that she gets—being able to heal in an environment that won’t look down on her or make fun of her, and won’t judge her or our situation.” While her long-term recovery outlook will require her to complete 6th grade from home, Zhayna is doing her best to make the most of her stay at the House by participating in creative writing, dramatic arts, craft projects, and Summer Camp.

In late June, “Kamp Kidd” began nine weeks of action-packed programming that keeps young guests very busy. “I will have fun, play safe, be silly, laugh, make friends and make memories,” sang the campers at the kick-off event which included tie-dying, hat painting, and decorating flip flops. Campers also created items for their friends and

siblings in the hospital and made a special trip to deliver the surprise gifts. The kids splish-splashed during afternoon trips to the Palo Alto YMCA pool, learned the art of pizza making at California Pizza Kitchen, enjoyed children’s movies at CINEMARK, and scooped up their very own “Ronald McDonald House Sundae” at Cold Stone Creamery. On “Survivor” day, each tribe chose a name, designed a banner and competed in relay races and a scavenger hunt. Fiesta day was host to piñata making and breaking. Edible

caterpillars and stained-glass butterflies were center stage during “insects” day. As a means to foster self-esteem, campers made life-sized self portraits by lying down on butcher paper and having their whole bodies traced. Free-lance writer Dewi Faulkner taught creative writing skills through fun, interactive activities. On Thursdays, long-time volunteer Sharon Barkoff came to help make summer treats such as berry sorbet and fruit empanadas. Players from the San Jose Earthquakes soccer team stopped by to show off juggling tricks and goal scoring techniques, sign autographs and give away game tickets. Kamp Kidd—full of giggles, silliness, and new friends—is helping make Ronald McDonald House an especially fun home-away-from-home this summer!

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE AT STANFORD

Facing Challenge while Far from Home The Dalai Lama Visits to Bless House Children Dear Families,

I

n mid-October, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will visit Ronald McDonald House at Stanford to bless the ill children. In anticipation of the visit, House children and families are already creating Flags of Hope (see article below) to honor His Holiness. During his visit, the Dalai Lama will exchange gifts and stories with the children, blessing them and wishing them well. In return, they will present him with a gift of these flags. As an internationally recognized religious leader, His Holiness brings with him an energy of compassion, serenity and commitment. Being a Head of State, the Dalai Lama also brings public recognition to the issue of seriously ill children far from home. The reports of His Holiness’ visit will reach a greater audience than we could reach with any other piece of news—spreading awareness about how families of ill children are facing an incredible challenge, far from home—a situation His Holiness knows well!

More than anything, the Dalai Lama’s visit is an extraordinary honor—one that will have a profound impact on the hope and courage of our critically ill children and their families. We anticipate that it will be a life-changing experience for everyone involved.   We have been blessed with this experience thanks to Lee, Diane and Eric Brandenburg and Professor Tom Nazario of The Forgotten International. We send them our deepest gratitude.

FLAGS of HOPE “One day in a far away country with tall mountains a little boy named Tashi went to visit his friend Norbu. They were the best of friends. They did everything together. But on this day there was something wrong. “Norbu could not get out of bed. “Tashi overheard Norbu’s parents whispering. They were saying that Norbu was very, very sick and they were very, very sad. “Tashi left Norbu’s house and started to walk up the mountain. Tears streamed down his cheeks. Ahead of him colorful prayer flags waved. They seemed to call him to climb on up, up, up the mountain. “He came to an old mountain house where the flag maker of the village lived and asked if he could help him make flags for his friend.

From now until October, Flags of Hope will be made in honor of the children and families of the Ronald McDonald House and the visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. If you would like a blank flag mailed to you to join in this effort, please contact Family Services Manager Bri CarpañoSeoane at bri@ ronaldhouse.net.

“After many days Tashi completed a string of flags. On one he wrote ‘NORBU.’ On another he glued a tiny green stone from his pocket. He remembered that the last time he and Norbu were together they found that rock. He couldn’t wait to show the flags to Norbu and ran down the mountain. “Tashi hung the flags so Norbu could see them from his window. Norbu smiled as the flags waved and flapped in the twilight. “Time passed and the flags began to tatter, their threads blowing up in to the sky. Even though Norbu was still sick the flags made him smile and to even laugh. It was the power of love and caring in the Flags of Hope that comforted Norbu.” Story written by Robin Modlin and Caryn Huberman Yacowitz

For Randy, It’s All About the Kids

S

unny weather greeted Ronald McDonald House at Stanford supporters as they gathered for a day of golf at the 2010 Randy Cross Invitational on Monday, June 7th. Over 250 players teed off

at the Stanford University and Sharon Heights courses, in the first tournament featuring a dual Shamble and Handicap format.

Later in the evening, Randy Cross was joined by nearly 400 guests for a reception at the Rosewood Sand Hill resort, where they were treated to wine from Heintz Ranch Vineyards and an array of goodies provided by Rosewood’s Madera restaurant and Nola, Town, and Milagros, of the Avenir Restaurant Group. Randy was accompanied by celebrity guest emcee Brian Murphy of KNBR for the awards presentation. The exciting culmination of

the event was the announcement that Ed Carter had won the Drawing’s Grand Prize, a 2010 Maserati Quattroporte, generously donated by Art and Lisa Zafiropoulo of FerrariMaserati of Silicon Valley. Following the drawing, McDonald’s owner/ operator Scott Rodrick presented the House with a $350,000 check. The donation is part of the local restaurants’ “One-Fry-At-A-Time” campaign, which has committed to raise $1 million for the House over the next three years. The House wishes to thank

the co-chairs of the planning committees—Gregg Davis, Derrick Diaz, Con Freeman, Bob Selig, and Julie Van Gorder—for their leadership and dedication. With the help of over 100 volunteers, they were able to design an extraordinary day for everyone. This year, the Tournament exceeded expectations by netting over $340,000. Of that, almost $31,000 was from the Sponsora-Family auction, a new addition to the event. For the 26th year, supporters stayed true to Randy’s motto: “It’s all about the kids.”

SPRING LAMB BBQ & BOCCE TOURNAMENT

W

hat started as a barbeque among high school friends, has evolved into an annual feast with a significant impact on Ronald McDonald House at Stanford. The 8th Annual Spring Lamb Barbeque and Bocce Ball Tournament fired up the pit on April 24th at Campo di Bocce in Los Gatos. Since its inception, the Spring Lamb Barbeque has raised over half a million dollars for the House. While the bocce ball tournament finished up, the wine flowed and hors d’oeuvres circulated. Guests bid on an

array of silent auction items, including fine wine and sports memorabilia. House guests John and Karen accompanied their daughter Julie, who spoke to the attendees about the impact of staying far from home while receiving highly specialized medical treatment. Special thanks are due to event co-Chairs Frank and Sue Bisceglia, their tireless committee, and the incredible volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to creating a unique and special evening for all. We’re looking forward to next year already!

rank was known as a very frugal man. His occupation was sales, but his hobby was saving his dimes. To all appearances, he was a modestly successful businessman with a home in the East Bay and a Ford Pinto he drove until it fell apart. After he and his dear wife Ruth passed away, it became clear there was another, hidden, side to their lives—Frank and Ruth had

amassed a fortune of millions and chose to give it to help others. Ronald McDonald House at Stanford is one of several charities blessed with a large bequest from Frank and Ruth. For those at the House it is bittersweet; while we greatly appreciate the generosity and will use the gift wisely, we wish they had not been so humble with their plans, sharing them with no one. We wanted an

opportunity to show them the impact their gift will have for decades to come. Ronald McDonald House recognizes those who plan to give to the House through their estates with membership in our Children’s Legacy Circle. Legacy Circle members are invited to special events and are listed on the donor wall. Most people hope their legacy will be a final good deed. We’d like to add to that with a genuine expression of appreciation. If you have named the House in your will or as a beneficiary of your 401(k), IRA or life insurance plan, please let us know. If only we could have known the goodness in Frank and Ruth’s hearts we could have said, “thank you.”
