GRAND PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE JAN SPANOS GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES Each of us in our own way, have moments and experiences which we can call GOLDEN. For your Grand Lodge the GOLDEN MOMENTS and OPPORTUNITIES all start with you, our Sisters in the most amazing organization of women today. November 16, 1929, our founder, Alexandra Apostolides, put forth an agenda of proposals that spoke to the empowerment of women and through them, their children and extended families, thus lighting the torch for generations to follow. It is my belief that we carry that torch today, 87years later, brighter and with greater vim and vigor than ever and that by doing that we carry forward the legacy of Alexandra. Each of us has a within us a fire that can and often ignites the flame of success in our Chapters and Districts from Australia, Canada, Greece, Germany and here in the United States. We are compassionate, giving benefactors to the less fortunate in our individual communities; to the military of our individual countries whether in service, retired, returning or wounded; to our experienced seniors; to children abandoned, be it to human trafficking, bullying or other abuse; to the relief from natural disasters, homelessness or hunger; to aiding with the desperately ill and to encourage women and children to use every GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY available to them to reach for the stars thus enabling them to realize their goals for a better life. We walk in many different shoes: we are doctors, nurses, policewomen, mayors, lawyers, judges, legislators, teachers, scout leaders, restaurateurs, care providers, fire fighters, military personnel, hairdressers, consultants, bankers, realtors, wives, mothers, sisters, aunts, Godmothers and most of all, we are best friends. We are there with a hug, a handkerchief, a strong shoulder, a listening ear, and a big heart. We are Sisters, be it of different mothers, but most of all…We are the Daughters of Penelope! I am so proud of our accomplishments over the past 87 years, that my eyes glisten, my heart beats faster for each of you, my thoughts continually wander to what we can still do to reach greater heights for our domain and most of all, because I am so very lucky to count myself as part of the whole and as your Sister. My many initiatives, as your Grand President, started with a desire to visit as many Chapters and Districts as possible; to speak on your behalf to members of Hellenic Caucus on issues that the Daughters of Penelope advocate for; to listen and learn from leaders of our national projects; to meet and discuss like issues with other international women’s organizations; to create a fundraiser (coming in the Spring) that will build upon our Daughters of Penelope Charitable Foundation; to be a visible presence in activities that protect our family values. I have requested a greater presence by our Grand Lodge Liaisons to Chapters within their assigned Districts; and to continue monthly newsletters to their Liaison Chapters and Districts, with constant contact and availability to use every GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY to assist you in any way possible. Our Maids of Athena Advisor has been diligent in her zeal to assist and guide our Junior Order to greater success and continues to be the “go to person” for all things Maids of Athena. With Executive Director Elena Saviolakis, who has for two years been working diligently alongside the AHEPA Membership Director to upgrade our computer programs and bring them and us into the 21st century. With the continuing assistance from our Legislative Consultant Andrew Kaffes, who keeps us informed with bills before the United States Legislature, that will affect the wellbeing of our projects such as Penelope House and Penelope’s Place, and has been invaluable with his insight and guidance. With our Past Grand Presidents who continue with invaluable assistance, knowledge and experience. With members of the press, internationally and domestically that follow us and support us with their reporting and acknowledgment of Alexandra’s Dream and how relevant it is today, worldwide. Chapters and Districts have amazed me at every turn. This is not a surprise to me, but I will tell you that it warms my soul to see, read about and listen to the accomplishments that the Daughters of Penelope do every day, every year and it only reinforces the fact that as Past Grand Presidents Elaine Sampanis and Nicky Stamoulis stated; ”You (the members) are the heartbeat of this organization.” An organization that has no second. Sisters, you are the solders that face obstacles and overcome them. You use every GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY available to you to help mend the broken and disenfranchised. You help feed the hungry and shelter the less fortunate. You advocate for women and children in your cities and states. You comfort the weary and wounded. Your boundless wealth of love aids those that suffer from devastating illnesses. You give comfort without thought of ethnicity, color or faith. You are heroes in the true sense of the word and I feel so lucky to be counted in your company. ASPIRE…..TO KEEP ALEXANDRA’S DREAM ALIVE 2

A Message from Tria Charnas, Maids of Athena Grand President Dear Sisters, Welcome 2017! The start of the new year always seems to bring with it a sunny outlook for the future and a focus on what's to come. For our Maids of Athena membership, the future holds many opportunities for leadership. As such, our Grand Lodge has instituted our new MAID to LEAD program. This program aims to highlight members with leadership potential and give them first-hand access to National Committee work experience and interactions with the MOA Grand Lodge. Sisters are nominated by the Grand Lodge and then assigned to one of four committees. Based on their performance and contributions, nominees will be eligible to be selected to participate in our first Maid to Lead conference in Washington, D.C. The conference will focus on team-building, leadership skills, and knowledge sharing. The experience will be incomparable and important for those thinking about running for Grand Lodge in the future. Our inaugural MAID to LEAD nominee class includes 12 exceptional members from 2 countries, and 8 different districts. We are thrilled to start the program and watch them excel in their contributions to our Sisterhood! If you are interested in supporting this program, we are looking for sponsors for our MAID to LEAD conference in Washington, D.C. Funding comes in part from our Patron of Athena Program. The Patron of Athena program is open to past Maids, current Daughters, and friends of our Sisterhood. Through a one-time, lifetime membership fee, you can pledge your support to our Junior Order. The fee is only $75 and available through the application on both the DOP and MOA national webpages. We are also in need of your support in other areas as well. Earlier this month, we met in Los Angeles for our mid-year meeting, during which we reviewed total membership. In order to stay on track our 5-year growth strategy, we need to focus on our presence at the grassroots Chapter level. We are looking to open at least 3 new Chapters before National Convention. If you are interested in opening a Chapter in your area, please contact Growth and Expansion Chair, MOA Grand Vice President Effie Sapuridis. Lastly, the very best way to support our Junior Order is by ensuring you are up to date on our membership qualifications and Constitutional amendments! For a crash course, please refer to the email message sent on behalf of MOA Grand Advisor Kathy Bizoukas Zotos on November 14. Copies of our Constitution are also available for purchase through National Headquarters. Download an order form on our National MOA webpage. In the moths to come, we will continue our efforts toward National and President's projects. As a reminder, this year's National Project is the International Rescue Committee. We are fundraising through a donation letter giving campaign. For a copy, please contact National Project Chair, Grand Treasurer Tatiana Tsaprailis. This year's President's Project focuses on raising funds and awareness for the Ronald McDonald House of New York's Greek Division. Thus far, we have had tremendous support! I had the chance to visit the House twice. Most recently, I traveled to New York and join the staff and nearly 500 supporters of the House at their annual Christmas party at the beautiful New York Athletic Club. We are looking forward to our next Grand Lodge trip to Mobile, Alabama, where we will visit Penelope House, participate in a service project, and meet with the operating staff, alongside the DOP Grand Lodge. I know this will be an impactful experience for our young women. Be on the lookout for our updated website launch in February. Also follow along our day-to-day updates (and my travel updates during April's AHEPA Family excursion to Greece!) by following @Maidsofathena on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter! Thank you for your continued support of our Junior Order. We are looking forward to visiting your Chapters soon, and celebrating with you in Orlando in July!

Headquarters Update History on DOP Charitable Foundation In 2011, AHEPA Family Headquarters announced at the District Governor’s Seminar and 2012 Supreme Convention the possibility of HQ and all of our chapters and districts obtaining 501c3 group exemption status via the IRS. To do so, AHEPA & DOP Headquarters issued new 501c3 EINs via the IRS under the AHEPA Family umbrella (over 750 EINs total) for the IRS to review. Three years later in May 2014, the IRS was able to review all 750 EIN numbers issued and stated that the group exemption had been denied as the IRS was no longer issuing group exemptions as the IRS felt they could not control the activity of all our chapters and districts. As a result, our IRS agent informed HQ that HQ and its chapters and districts would need to individually file to obtain 501c3 status via the IRS. This result was announced at the 2014 Supreme Convention and 2014 District Governor’s Seminar. Once the Daughters of Penelope HQ received the news, the appropriate paperwork was submitted again to the IRS to obtain Daughters of Penelope HQ 501c3 status, which was granted in October 2014. This 501c3 has been set up under the AHEPA Family umbrella for charitable purposes and special projects (such as the Grand President’s project in 2014 – Saint Nicholas National Shrine) and primarily serves our disaster relief efforts. The 501c3 EIN is now associated with our charitable bank account making our charitable efforts official with the IRS and allows us the capability to issue tax donation letters to individuals contributing to our disaster relief efforts. In addition, this 501c3 status gives us the capability to receive specific charitable grants, tax exempt on charitable events and fundraisers, and tax exempt on mailings and material for charitable purposes. Please help support our Charitable Foundation so that the DOP can not only continue to fulfill the philanthropic portion of its mission and serve the community by making donations to worthy causes and endeavors but also have the capability to act fast when there is a need for aid. Please consider donating by visiting our donation page so that we can continue our good works in the community. This charitable foundation’s Board is the Grand Lodge as the Grand Lodge oversees all HQ bank accounts. This foundation is not to be associated with our National Projects as it is serves projects outside the scope of those projects voted at the Supreme Convention annually. This foundation is not a separate entity and thus is a part of the IRS AHEPA Family umbrella and therefore is included in the annual AHEPA Family audit.

Aspa Kostopoulos Grand Treasurer Dear Sisters, I wish you all a great year. I would like to thank the Sisters in District 13, 17 and 23 (covering for Sister Celia) for their hospitality and warm reception during the District Workshop. We discussed and exchanged ideas and informed about the New Year. Having the chance to meet new members and seeing many of the long standing ones. The enthusiasm was great as they are ready to take action to assist their community at home and abroad. It was great to hear about the different ways and events that are being held to raise money for their charities, for scholarships, etc. How proud they are and should be. Unfortunately I am not able to attend the District 16 Workshop as my mother is in the hospital and not doing well. I do wish the Sisters a great and informative weekend. I also want to thank all the Sisters from near and far for their prayers, good wishes. This is why I am writing this beside mom at the hospital, as she has been in since December 24. I cannot thank you enough. Every one of you for your emails, texts, phone calls. Every time I received a message it brought tears, all I could think of "what a great organization I belong to". Having the opportunity to meet so many wonderful women. Coming to my side when needed, this is what Our Founder Sister Alexandra, I believe wanted. Women assisting Women forever. I thank you all for your support. Please keep the prayers coming. I wish you all good health and happiness. Let us all continue the Dream.

The picture was taken when I had my hand on mom's and she opened her fingers to hold mine.

Lili Respass Grand Governor, Zone 1 Greetings Sisters! I was assigned by Grand President Jan Spanos Liaison to Districts 6, 7, and 8. It was a pleasure visiting these Districts, hearing about their accomplishments and projects that support the ideals of the Daughters of Penelope and sharing new ideas. District 6: “Empire District” covers the state of New York. This District is home to St. Basil Academy. I attended their Fall Conference celebrated on Founder’s Day. An artoclasia was done at St. Paul’s Cathedral. After that we had a luncheon and conference. I was fortunate to attend District 6 Convention because I was covering for their liaison in the Spring and met with the Sisters of District 6. When I became their liaison in September and attended their conference we renewed our friendship, I was able to spend time and visit the sisters. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon. District 7: “Yankee District” This District covers Rhode Island and Connecticut. Last year I was their liaison giving me the opportunity to meet everyone and this year met many more sisters. I attended their District Conference in Norwich, Ct and we covered many items. District 7 is close to me and I have had a visitation during the Christmas holidays in Newport, RI. My goal is to be able to visit as many chapters as I can in District 7 and have another visitation scheduled in February with two chapters together. This year we will be celebrating our Tri-District Convention, this happens every three years, District 7, 8, and 9 have a Convention together. At this time, we are all working on it. It will be great to have my liaisons right there. District 8: Bay State District My Home District. I have visited several of our chapters and have just a couple more to visit this year. I am working closely with the District Governor and offering my help in any way. Unfortunately, our District Governor and Past Grand President Elaine Kevgas was in an accident this year and is recuperating, I have offered and have done anything I can to help her. When she is on her feet I will be there to help her. It has been quite an amazing year for me, meeting so many people and learning from them. Although, I am over a 30 years member, this experience is like none other. I have enjoyed my time last year and this year and I am looking forward to continuing to help my Sisters and their Districts. My goal is to try to visit as many chapters as I can.

Katherine Karafotias Grand Governor Zone IV I’d like to share with you some of the activities in my liaison districts – Districts #3, #12, and #14. All districts are doing very well in terms of membership. They have all been participating in our Grand Vice President Eva Jean’s Growth & Expansion challenges – and it shows! The chapters are doing their best in following our Grand President Jan’s theme this year – taking those Golden Opportunities to aspire to keep our founder’s dream alive. Capital District #3 with its 12 chapters has initiated 42 new members as of December 2016. Their total membership is 483. Congratulations to District Governor Renee Mozingo and her lodge for keeping up the good work. One of the ways they connect with their chapters is by having each District Lodge member act as a liaison to specific chapters in the district. District #3 activities include coffee hours for new and prospective members, a scholarship luncheon, bake sales and fundraisers for their Daughters’ projects. Hoosier District #12 has five active chapters, with 11 new members initiated for a total of 164 members. One of the chapters in this district, I’m proud to say, has qualified for Grand Vice President Eva Jean’s challenge to “Pay It Forward.” It’s been fun to read about the various chapter activities in their newsletters. This district participates in their AHEPA Family Educational Foundation. They too have many activities which support their district project – Domestic Violence. Congratulations to District Governor Patricia Makarounas and her district lodge for their continued success. Grainfield District #14 with its nine chapters under the leadership of District Governor Peggy Sperides and her lodge has also done well in membership standings with three new members initiated for a total of 219 members. District #14 has had joint events with AHEPA, holiday bazaars, fundraisers for women’s shelters in the area as well as organizing Greek dance lessons for their youth. I’m very proud to be the Grand Lodge liaison to these three progressive districts in our Order. I look forward to working with them over the next few months as we continue our work for the Daughters of Penelope.

Vasilia Kachmarski Grand Governor Zone V

Greetings and Happy New Year Sisters, It has been a very eventful four months. It was an honor to be elected to serve once again on the Grand Lodge after a hiatus of a few years. It has afforded me the opportunity to be reacquainted with many Sisters and to meet new Sisters. I am energized by the level of commitment and enthusiasm of the Sisters and their continued support of the Daughters of Penelope and its ideals. Communication is key to success. We have such a plethora of ways to communicate today however it is important to also reach out to those who are not electronically connected. Old school is good. To be honest I prefer to hear someone’s voice on the phone and have a live conversation. I want to thank all sisters for your volunteer efforts. Without you, the Chapters, there would be no Districts or Grand Lodge. Keep up the good work. So proud of all of you! An accident over the Christmas holidays has sidelined me for a while but communicate I can, so stay in touch, stay busy, stay well.

Kathy Zotos Grand Maids of Athena Advisor Happy New Year! May 2017 be FABULOUS! Each year we all tend to make resolutions for the New Year. A new year, a new start, we say… so let’s make an effort as Daughters of Penelope to make a resolution to enhance the bond between the Daughters of Penelope and the Maids of Athena. We, TOGETHER, need to work on teaching, educating, and advising to be continue to be the wonderful organization that we are. The Maids of Athena Grand Lodge started off the year with a “Sisterhood” weekend in NYC. Bonding, Education, and Sisterhood were the focal points of the weekend. We visited the Ronald McDonald House, Greek Division, which is this year’s project of Maids of Athena Grand President Tria Charnas, went to the site of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine, took in the NY sites, and had great bonding experiences in the heart of Manhattan. The Lodge incorporates this wonderful weekend every year to “bond” with the other members on the lodge and focus on their goals for the upcoming year. This weekend the Grand Lodge traveled to the west coast, Los Angeles, CA for their Mid-year meeting and to join, in supporting, the Sons of Pericles event “Greeks in LA” Basketball tournament. Here, both lodges are meeting to review goals and start in the preparation of the upcoming Supreme Convention. They work very hard to keep the Junior Orders afloat, so please, when you see a member of our junior order, reach out to them and ask if they need anything, they will appreciate it. As well, one of the few Hellenic Cancer Research Foundation of its kind, providing grants in the field of cancer research. The uniqueness of these grants, is that 100% of the monetary award goes towards the sole purpose of cancer research and not administration cost. The Foundation was privileged that attendees came from all over the United States, Canada and Greece to be a part of this historical milestone. Further, the Foundation was honored that Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) was able to attend and commemorate this special evening with the Foundation. Congressman Pallone, who himself is a member of the Order of AHEPA, is also a ranking member of the Energy and Commerce Committee which oversees healthcare. He spoke about the 21st Century Cures Act and Moon Shot on Cancer Research Program. Further, he spoke about the practice of precision medicine regarding cancer treatment and its benefits. Pallone stated “that the money you raise helps match the federal government’s initiative of cancer research. I am proud of your efforts and I thank you for what you do.” Perhaps the most poignant moment of the evening, is when Past Foundation Chairman Georgette Boulegeris, PDG shared her personal journey of breast cancer. She stated that “two years ago, two days before the Gala I had my first chemotherapy treatment. As a member and supporter of the Foundation for many years, when you are on the other side of the spectrum you have a different perspective. Your life changes and so does the lives of people around you. I was lucky, I was diagnosed early, and they did a test on me called the oncotype test which determines the probability of reoccurrence of cancer. The seed money for this test was given by this Foundation.” For now she

18

considers herself surviving cancer, until her oncologist says she does not want to see her anymore she will not consider herself cancer free. It is hard to believe that twenty-eight years ago, armed with coin collection canisters that the Foundation would be celebrating the cumulative awarding of $1,000,000-in cancer research grant giving. To date they have raise approximately 1.5 million dollars through various fundraising programs. Foundation Chairman Antoinette Marousis-Zachariades awarded two chapters from District 5 with the Golden Canister Award whose assistance has been invaluable for their service to the Canister Program. They are the only chapters since the inception of the Program to continuously partake. The Order of AHEPA, Alexander Hamilton #54, Paramus, NJ for 25 years of service and the Daughters of Penelope, Aulis #195, Ocean, NJ for 27 years of service. Accepting the award on behalf of their chapters, Demetrios Bayiokos, Chapter President, Louis Arvanitis, PSG, Chapter President Patricia Vlahos, PDG and Sophia Anest, may their canisters always be full. Basil Mossaides, Executive Director of the Order of AHEPA once again served as the Master of Ceremonies. He summed of the evening in one simple statement “we gather here today in District 5 for a historical event. It is a wonderful opportunity to show case the great work that the AHEPA family does but also the wonderful work that goes on here in District 5 and I really think because of your efforts that one day, very soon we will be here celebrating the eradication of this disease.” Many AHEPA Family dignitaries were in attendance from near and far, the Sons of Pericles Supreme President, Nicholas Apostolou who hails from New Jersey, District 5 was extremely proud to be a part of a district that raises money for cancer research. Past Foundation Chairman George G. Horiates, Supreme Counselor offered a toast in memory of the Foundation’s Founder Julian “Woody” West who had the foresight to initiate the idea of forming the Foundation and raising money for cancer research. Daughters of Penelope Grand President Jan Spanos thanked the Foundation for what they do. As a two time survivor of cancer, she stated that “you are a living testimony to the good things that we stand for as an AHEPA Family. As a district you are an example and should be proud. On behalf of all of those in need I sincerely thank you for what you do and hope that you continue to raise millions of dollars more.” Order of AHEPA Supreme President and Past Foundation Chairman Andrew C. Zachariades stated that “the importance of us being here tonight is really the legacy of the AHEPA Family. There is only one Order of AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena, one AHEPA Family, who since 1922 has carried out the philanthropic importance of the organization, whose donations have exceeded over a billion dollars. He further thanked the doctors for all of their countless hours that they put into cancer research trying to find a cure for cancer.

19

To date, the Foundation has awarded eighty-four research grants to various institutions for cancer research in the states of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The Foundation is extremely honored to be working with top notch cancer research institutions and doctors who are amongst the best in their field. The first grand award was presented on September 16, 1990 in the amount of $5,000 to Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia. Antoinette Marousis-Zachariades, Chairman and Christos Prentzas, Vice Chairman presented the 2016 Cancer Grant Awards to the following doctors and institutions. Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ for their study on the Use of Platinum-Based Chemotherapy & Biomarker Discovery for Improved Outcomes in Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Principal Investigator Kim M. Hirshfield, M.D., Ph.D., accepted the grant on behalf of herself and Co-Investigators Deborah Toppmeyer, M.D. & Shridar Ganesan, M.D. Ph.D. who was the 2015 Axios Award recipient. Weill Medical College of Cornell University/Children’s Blood Foundation, New York, NY for their study on the Development of novel exosome-nanoparticle hybrid anti-cancer drug carriers for treating patients with breast cancer and pediatric cancer accepted by Principal Investigator David C. Lyden, M.D., Ph.D., and Surgical Fellow, Constantinos Zambirinis, MD, Ph.D. Coming full circle the Foundation felt that Fox Chase Cancer Center had to be awarded the one millionth dollar in cancer research grants. Erica Golemis, Ph.D. accepted the grant on behalf of herself and her team at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA, for their study on Investigating STA-8666, a Novel HSP90- Inhibitor Drug Conjugate to Sn38, in Prevention and Control of Lung Cancer. As balloons were released to mark this significant moment, to the surprise of all the guests, the Fralinger Mummers String Band joyfully came marching in to celebrate the fact that the Foundation did it, they MARCHED TO A MILLION bringing their total grant giving awards to $1,005,000, so they may march on, to raise their next $1,000,000. The Foundation was formed in October 1988, by the Fifth District Order of AHEPA to raise funds from its members and the general public for cancer research grants. Shortly, thereafter the Fifth District Daughters of Penelope came on board uniting the AHEPA Family of District 5 behind a common cause of philanthropic support of cancer research. Empire State District No. 6 By Marie Kratsios, District Governor It’s been a very active fall/early winter season for the District 6. Every chapter has been busy with their good work. In September, PGP Christine Constantine-Malgarinos and I attended a lovely event hosted by the AHEPA Delphi Chapter (New York City) honoring the Hon. Judge Nicholas Tsoucalas. I’m happy to report that I met a woman at the event was eager to learn more about the Daughters of Penelope and ultimately joined the Medusa Chapter. You never know where you’ll find new members. In November we held our annual fall conference and we were so honored to have Grand Governor Lili Respass visit us from Massachusetts. Thank you Sister Lili for making the trip down to New York to join us and thank you to the Pasithea Chapter for hosting the event for the District. The Growth & Expansion effort within the District has been very successful. Each chapter is working hard to grow their chapter with new and reinstated members. We visited the Clytie Chapter and the Medusa Chapter for their Initation Meetings. The Maids of Athena are also growing within the District. I’m so happy that the Olga Moutselos Chapter has been reactivated in Brooklyn after many years of being dormant, We attended their first meeting and, along with MOA Grand Governor Sophia Shakolas, initiated 10 young women into their chapter. We also attended the Initiation Ceremony for the Victory Chapter and helped to initiate 8 young women into that chapter. We wish both chapters much success. December is a time of many Christmas parties and we were happy to join our AHEPA Brothers for the annual AHEPA Family Christmas Party. We were also joined by the children of St. Basil’s who were entertained by a magician. District 6 Lodge wishes our Sisters in every Daughters of Penelope Chapter a wonderful and productive 2017. Buckeye District No. 11 By Joyce Anagnos, District Governor, Antoinette Geanneses, District Secretary There was no looking back once installation of newly elected District #11 officers was held. DG Joyce attended the National Workshop for District Governors, and the word procrastination was immediately eliminated from the vocabulary. Armored with a schedule designed by DG Joyce, the District Lodge set out to fulfill the ideals of the mission with dedication and commitment as each member could master. Such enthusiasm was displayed at the District Workshop on September 24, 2016, Toledo, Ohio, hosted by Dodona Chapter #24. Graced in attendance by first time and seasoned Chapter officers and our District’s Maids of Athena, a meeting place was transformed into a classroom. Each participant took home information and packaged material to cover all levels of the Daughters. At the conclusion, we enjoyed a delectable lunch and fellowship. The next phase to embrace was Chapter Visitations. The Lodge traveled from Weirton West Virginia, to Louisville Kentucky—with a few Ohio Chapters in-between, in response to invitations for visitation at a meeting. It was delightful to meet new and reacquaint with Chapter members and learn of their plans and ideas. The District Project chosen this year is NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and the Buckeye Scholarship Foundation.

EOS Chapter No. 1 San Francisco, CA Founder’s Day Celebration Poem submitted by EOS EOS, THE GODDESS OF DAWN There was a burst and a blaze dynamiting the heavens! Burnt colors radiating throughout the skies! A new Birth!

A new Dawn!

A future winged angel bounced on our turf! Her parents were Hyperion and Theia, A golden chariot with elegant horses

Delivered her amidst scattering sparks of fire!

Exquisite among a flurry of vibrant, delicate roses! Eos, our NEW DAWN, had a brother, Helios, god of the sun. Selene, her adorable sister was the goddess of the moon! They joked, laughed, ran and had so much fun!

Together, Eos and siblings were to learn to flourish and bloom! Yes, Eos is the Dawn, the beginning, the “start”! Our Chapter, this foundation, was so named and, “Oh, so smart!” Because we are the light, the love, the vision, the bond, That shines on Earth and links mankind.

Hermione Chapter No. 11 Washington, DC Founded in Washington, DC in 1934, our Chapter strives to execute meaningful projects that embody the mission of DOP – to promote Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, and Family/Individual Excellence. Hermione’s philanthropic activities extend to a wide range of organizations. Since September 2016, we have supported financially the mosaic restoration fund at Saint Sophia in Washington, DC, the Penelope House in Mobile, AL, and the Ionian Village of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese after suffering severe damage from a tornado in early Fall. More activities are planned for the upcoming months. In early October Hermione hosted a meet-and-greet coffee and breakfast get together with parents and adult students of the Greek School at Saint Sophia in Washington, DC. We are excited about the possibilities of cross-membership between the two organizations and the potential for joint philanthropic and educational projects. In November, Hermione joined several DOP Chapters in celebration of Founder’s day. The luncheon, hosted by the Arion Chapter in Bethesda, MD, was wonderful. It was a great honor and distinct pleasure to celebrate our annual Christmas luncheon with Grand President Jan Spanos, Past Grand President Joanne Saltas and DOP Executive Director Elena Saviolakis. Several Helle Sisters joined us as well. In the spirit of the holidays, Sisters donated 55 new books and 36 toys and Sister Helen Koustenis donated 10 beautiful hand-knitted children’s hats. The books and hats were delivered to Children’s Medical Center in Washington, DC and the toys to the Franconia Volunteer Fire Department in Alexandria, VA. Pleiades Chapter No. 50 Hammond, IN Pleiades Chapter #50 continues to grow. We are a group of women who love getting together just as a “release” from the everyday life. Our chapter consists of members as young as 24 years of age and go well into the 80’s. Our eldest, Beatrice Paravantes, a charter member, turned 99 years young on September 13th, continues to keep in contact with our members. Happy Birthday Miss Bea! We started out the year with a dinner and installation of officers. We invited our Maids of Athena Dionysia Chapter #141, then split into our individual meetings. What a nice way to start out the year! In November, our AHEPA, Chapter #123, hosted a dinner to celebrate birthdays and gather our AHEPA “family” together. We had a wonderful evening! Celebrating, socializing with friends, new and old, and great food. How much better does it get? We ended 2016 with our annual Christmas Dinner. Every year we try to choose a charity rather than host a gift exchange and this years’ charity was to bring an old handbag and fill it with toiletries, which will be donated to a local Women’s Center and Penelope House. “Happy New Year” from your Sisters in Hammond, Indiana!

Antiklea Chapter No. 68 Richmond, VA By Shelia Demetriadis, Chapter Corresponding Secretary Antiklea Chapter began our fall activities with a bang: our Variety Show on October 22, 2016, organized by our hard-working Sister Nina Zachary. Everyone enjoyed an entertaining evening, accompanied by a tasty dinner prepared by our own Kitchen Wizards. We had a wide range of performers that Sister Nina lined up, including singers, instrumental musicians, vocal groups, a comic MC, and even a real live Karate Kid! You just had to be at the show to see the kinds and levels of talent we have in our Saints Constantine and Helen Cathedral community. In November, we once again participated in our local Philoptochos Society’s Greek Mini-Festival on November 10-12. In addition to assisting with the overall festival in a variety of capacities, we also staffed our usual Holy Land Crafts booth, which allows us to raise funds for the annual scholarship that we award to a student in our community. Our chapter celebrated Founder’s Day on November 20 this year. We offered the Artoklasia and sponsored the coffee hour with refreshments for all. We also took the occasion to provide information about our organization and encourage interested ladies to apply for membership. Doris Chapter No. 157 Bloomfield Hills, MI Submitted by Elizabeth Bisbikis After a two month hiatus, we reunited in August at the home of Sister Kiki Sekles for our summer picnic. Potluck was the order of the day and with friendly discourse throughout, it made for an enjoyable summer day. At our September meeting, our new president, Eleni Chiachios presented us with our calendar of events. Our sisters are an ambitious group of ladies and they looked forward to accepting the challenges put forth to them. October was the start of our fall and winter soup sales. Volunteers using their culinary expertise prepared a tantalizing array of soups on a chosen Sunday after Liturgy to serve members of the congregation for five dollars. This has proven to be a successful fundraiser. We repeated it in November, December, January and February. Harvest Night has become an annual event. We co-sponsored this family night event with our St. George Philoptochos Chapter. On the eve of Halloween, our church hall was the location where children and parents donned their costumes, played games, ate pizza and were awarded prizes. In November we commemorated Founder’s Day by offering Artoklasia at St. George for the well being of our parishioners. We sponsored a coffee hour with a special cake and donated a check to St. George for their loyal support. Our chapter philanthropy includes annual donations to several local agencies and charities including participation in an “Adopt A Family” program sponsored By Lighthouse of Oakland County. From Doris Chapter, best wishes for a Happy New Year!

Dares Chapter No. 252 Dearborn, MI Happy New Year from Dares Chapter, District 10, Southgate, Michigan! Our chapter has been very busy! We’ve launched our annual olive oil sale and are very pleased with the sales to date. It is gratifying to receive support from our Sister Chapters and the community. Our cooking show was again an amazing success! This year we committed 100% of our profits in advance. Our Sisters chose to benefit our two national women’s shelters, Penelope’s Place and Penelope House. Supporting us were Sisters from neighboring Chapters as well as our District Governor Peggy Collias and Grand Governor Dorothea Williams. Christmas festivities would not have been complete without our joint gathering with Brothers and spouses of the Henry and Edsel Ford Ahepa Chapter. A beautiful dinner and social set the tone for the evening. We also collected items for a Christmas donation to a local women’s shelter. February will find us attending a District Movie Night and decorating placemats for Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor Michigan. Future plans include an initiation! Helle Chapter No. 283 Alexandria, VA Submitted by Karen Polizos, President We began the 2016-2017 DOP year with a potluck dinner at our September meeting. It is always nice to enjoy dinner together and catch up with everyone after the summer. During September through early November, we held our annual warm clothing drive and donated over 150 new jackets, hoodies, and sweatshirts to children and adults in the local community. The generosity of so many in our chapter and church community brought great success to this effort and we were able to deliver warm clothing in time for the cold temperatures. We warmly welcomed four new Sisters into Helle Chapter at our November meeting and hope to hold another initiation in the spring. We shared a Founder’s Day Luncheon with our Sister Chapters, Arion 298 and Hermione 11. In December we celebrated the spirit of the holidays at our chapter Christmas luncheon (see photo below). We also enjoyed celebrating with our Hermione Chapter 11 Sisters and visiting with Grand President Jan Spanos at their Christmas Luncheon. Our next event is our Tastes of the Mediterranean fundraiser in February and planning is underway. This is a fun event with live Greek music, Greek appetizers, and wine tasting. On behalf of Helle Chapter 283, we wish all Sisters and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Arion Chapter No. 298 Silver Spring, MD Arion Chapter #298 hosted our annual Christmas party on Thursday, December 8th. That evening we came together to celebrate our sisterhood along with all of our accomplishments in 2016. We were honored to have our Grand President Jan Spanos and Past Grand President Joanne Saltas join us. We were also delighted to celebrate the growth of our chapter with eleven new members, who were just initiated in October and November of 2016. Our chapter has experienced a wonderful year of growth!!! This year our chapter created a “Holiday to Remember” booklet, which raised over $6,500. The proceeds from the book are dedicated to today’s urgent crisis, helping free our youth from their unwilling addiction to Opiates and Heroine. We give thanks to our members, sponsors and local business that generously supported this booklet with their holiday greetings, sponsorships, stroll down memory lane and advertisements. The book was filled with pictures, articles and letters about the history of our chapter; it was a wonderful read for all!! Other monies raised a total of $1,700 during the Christmas Party event that went towards a local family who is in great need, may God bless them always. Arion Chapter #298 was proud to have sponsored the 2016 Founders Day event. It was a huge success supported by all our local chapters. Thank you Past Grand Governor Penny Manual and Sister Katherine Patterson for graciously chairing this event.

Kirki Chapter No. 313 Asheville, NC Submitted by Vicky Papakonstantinou, Chapter Secretary The Daughters in Asheville, North Carolina have outdone themselves this year in an effort to help the victims of domestic abuse in the local area. The shelter for women, Helpmate, received from our chapter, twice as many donations for the needy compared to all prior years. We flooded the lobby of the shelter recently with food and new clothing for the children and women who have found themselves in need this Christmas season. We also provided them with gift cards so that these ladies can go and buy their children gifts for Christmas. We were received with such gratitude and look forward to doing this again in the future. We also sponsored a needy child who is part of the local Eliada Home for Children, supplying clothes and toys to make Christmas a little brighter for that special person. For our chapter, it has been a joy and an honor to be a group that gives and helps to restore lives. The efforts of each of our members has collectively added up to a grand success in making Christmas a little better for a lot of people in Asheville this year. We wish all of the Daughters a blessed 2017!

Thais Chapter No. 344 Mobile, AL The Thais Chapter 344 has had a very active year. In addition to our regular monthly meetings we worked hard for Greek Fest which was held in October. Our work actually began in June with the preparation and baking of pasteries and Greek delicacies. Our first meeting of the Fall was held in Sept. at our AHEPA Apts. Meeting room. Officers for the year are: Leesa Vrocher, Pres., Patsy Adams, Vice Pres. And Adrianne Kergis, Sec/Treas. In October we held our regular meeting at Penelope House where each member brought a new Halloween Costume for a child in shelter. Our annual Christmas Party included playing Dirty Santa and each member brought gift cards for the residents of Penelope House. Also in Dec. we co-sponsored with AHEPA a Christmas Dinner Party at the shelter where Santa made an appearance and gave each woman and child a Christmas gift of $$. Our Chapter has partnered with Philoptochos on a project for the month of January to collect new underwear for the residents of Penelope House. We also participated in the Basilopita celebration at Church. Our chapter is now preparing for the Chocolate Festival on March 4th. Our Chapter has a booth at this festival where we give Chocolate Martini samples and sell Greek Pasteries. We proudly have a very active Book Club that meets monthly and we review and discuss books selected by the members.

Harmonia Chapter No. 366 Charlottesville, VA Submitted by: Catherine Anninos (Treasurer) and Mary Ann Bournos (Corresponding Secretary) Although our membership has dwindled to twenty members, Harmonia Chapter #366 continues to participate in activities that enrich the city of Charlottesville, its surrounding counties, and our Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church. Spring 2016 monetary donations were sent to the Alzheimer’s Association of Central and Western Virginia; to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank; to Camp Holiday Trails (empowers, encourages, and educates campers with chronic illnesses); to the Shelter for Help in Emergency; and to the mother of a newborn child being treated at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. During May through July, our Chapter’s participation as a charity working events at the Downtown Pavilion not only provided our volunteers the opportunity to enjoy concerts, but also to earn income for our Chapter and to support local charities through monetary “tips” received from concert attendees. Tips earned while working the Willie Nelson Concert (yes, that Willie Nelson!) and two other events were donated to the Emergency Food Network, the Humane Society / SPCA of Nelson County, the Louisa County Animal Shelter, and the Wildlife Center of Virginia. In July, several Chapter members and guests participated in Charlottesville’s Restaurant Week. In addition to enjoying dining together, a portion from each Restaurant Week meal served was donated to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. During the month of October (National Violence Awareness Month), we solicited donations from parishioners to support the Shelter for Help in Emergency (SHE). An SUV load of SHE Wish List items was collected and delivered! Monetary donations totaling $175.00 were mailed to SHE. In November, two members and the daughter of one ran in the SHE 5K Race. The registration fees paid by the racers were donated to the Shelter. Founder’s Day was observed on Sunday, November 13, with the after church services coffee being hosted by Harmonia Chapter #366. On December 3, we hosted a “Jingle and Mingle” Christmas Party. Attendees to this appetizer/dessert social were entertained by a member’s son-in-law who played his guitar while Christmas carols were sung. Our Chapter will match the admission and beverage donations (less expenses) and donate that amount to our Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church in Charlottesville, VA. For Christmas we “adopted” a senior citizen residing in a local nursing home. Items from his wish list were purchased, including a bottle of fragrance, lotions, socks, and a coat. Our “Chapter Elf” who did the shopping learned that our senior citizen was a Cleveland Cavaliers basketball fan, so she managed to include a Cleveland Cavaliers cap in our “adopted” senior’s Christmas present! Throughout 2016, Chapter members participated in church activities such as being a Sunday School teacher and a judge for the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival held at Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church, being a member of the Sunshine Committee, and serving on church committees (Parish Council Elections, Audit, and 2017 Stewardship). Although small in the number of members, Harmonia Chapter #366 continues to offer service to our city and to our church. Happy New Year to all!

Hestia Chapter No. 416 Fayetteville, NC The District 3, Hestia Chapter 416 of the DOP has spent a busy year to include: September's Greek Festival and Fayetteville's International Festival, October's Pink Ribbon Tea for Cancer Awareness & the Founder's Coffee Celebration and November's work at the Fayetteville Holly Day Fair with the brothers of AHEPA. This hard work allowed us to contribute to the following worthy charities: $2,000 to support the DSS Women's Domestic Shelter, $1,500 for the Child Advocacy Center, as well as our yearly contributions to IOCC, Friends of the Cancer Center, Fayetteville Urban Ministry, the City Rescue Mission, and the Salvation Army. We are very proud to be able with God's help to assist these worthy charities. On February 18,2017, we will assist our AHEPAN Brothers with the annual Athenian Night, an evening of food, fellowship and dancing including the DOP Silent auction and elegant décor. We will be honored to welcome several leaders of Chapter 3 to join our celebration. This event supports the annual AHEPA scholarship awards. Niriides Chapter No. 423 Komotini, Greece Submitted by Maria Sofianou, District 25 Liaison Encouragement Seminar for parents with children who suffer from autism and asperger syndrome On December 12, 2016, the Daughters of Penelope chapter Niriides Komotini, organized an encouragement seminar for parents with children who suffer from autism and asperger syndrome. Our speech therapist, Labriana Tsiakpini and our social worker Adriana Delegou, were more than helpful to the parents who participated. As they told us they found the seminar very interesting as well as comforting and this is the reason why they kept going from 11am until 5pm without feeling tired! We are more than grateful and that this was made possible and can’t thank enough the two therapists who offered their time and experience to the DOP pro bono! Chapter 423 Niriides Komotini. From left to right: Elpi Blekatsi Ch.President, Adriana Delegou social worker, Labriana Tsiakpini speech therapist, Maria Sofianou Hellas District Laison 25 and Dora Digka ch.Warden. (We respected the parents’ wish to not be photographed).

Also in December, the Niriides Chapter “undecorated” “the Christmas Wishes Tree” for a good cause: to raise funds to help children with neurological problems such as Asperger syndrome and autism. It was the second year that they realized this idea which was very successful both times! The chapter decorated a Christmas tree in the central square of their town and sold the ornaments to people passing by asking them to write a wish in a Christmas card and hang it themselves on the tree! When all the ornaments were sold, the money together with the wishes were given to a union founded by parents who have children with neurological problems. The event was a complete success! The Sisters had to decorate the Christmas Wish Tree twice, because people and especially children liked the idea and wanted to buy more ornaments and leave their wish! This was a wonderful way to show the love and affection of the DOP to these children and their support and solidarity to their parents, who fight every day not only against the disease but also against people’s prejudice! The DOP showed that these children must be given the opportunity to grow and be happy like every other child!

Ariadne Chapter No. 435 Melbourne, Victoria, Australia On Sunday November 20, 2016 200 women attended the successful launch of the Ariadne Chapter 435 Inaugural Fundraising Luncheon at the Red Scooter venue. Mr Jim Bossinakis representative from the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria was also in attendance. The goal of our Inaugural Fundraiser was to support the new Ariadne Chapter 435 Educational Scholarship Program by funding three scholarships for two consecutive years to the Smith Family, a children's charity organisation in Australia that commenced in Sydney New South Wales in 1922. The financial support is to be directed to disadvantaged Australian young women in Regional Victoria of secondary school age to complete their education and pursue viable educational pathways that will be life changing for them. “Empowering disadvantaged women and young girls in need to transform their lives through education. Amphitryon – Zephyr Chapter No. 701 Roseland, New Jersey The Roseland chapters of the AHEPA and Daughters held a pre-Christmas celebration in the Ss. Nicholas, Constantine & Helen Community Center, Roseland. Among our honored guests were, George Petrakakis, DG, Phil Vogis, PSG, and John Mehos, PSG. Our new priest, Fr. George Khtiri offered the blessing and opening prayer. We enjoyed a sumptuous buffet including holiday treats and goodies. The highlight of the evening was live music provided by Brother AHEPAns. It was not long before several guests were on their feet, a lovely way to welcome the Christmas Season. Earlier in the year, it came to our attention that there was a shortfall in donations for a custom window shade for the community center. The AHEPA Family of Roseland stepped up to the plate. The AHEPAns donated funds and the Daughters donated $500.00. The shade has been installed. In addition, we are supporting the District 5 project, “Covenant House”. A worthy organization which has been helping wayward youths for many years. 2017 we have two fundraisers planned: Our annual Koulourakia Bake Sale will be on Feb. 19, and a Father’s Day Raffle for June 18. Finally, I am happy to report, since September, we increased our chapter membership by four and anticipate additional initiates and reinstatements by June. Marion Economo, PDG Pres. Message from the Daughters of Penelope Foundation Inc. Joanne Booras, President On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Daughters of Penelope Foundation, Inc., I would like to thank all of the members of our wonderful Sisterhood for their continuous support this last year. Through your generosity and the fundraising efforts of the DOP Foundation many programs and projects have been established by the Foundation. Some have been for a limited time and others have been ongoing. This is truly appreciated. At the 2016 Supreme Convention the Foundation awarded on behalf of the Daughters of Penelope 22 scholarships, nine annual and fourteen perpetual awards. The list of the receipts is included. These scholarships are possible because of your past, present and future support, which enables the DOP Foundation to continue making a difference in the lives of these young women, and to many others, assisting them toward their achievements of their academic goals. When the DOP Foundation is selected as a Voluntary Project the chapter’s voluntary donations are assisting the DOP Foundation with its programs and projects, such as the District Governor’s Seminar and the Bridges Incentive Grant Program to name a few.

The Bridges Incentive Grant Program was established as an incentive for chapters/districts to build community bonds and promote the good works of our organization. The 2016 grant recipient is EROS CHAPTER 356 of New Port Richey Florida. This Daughters of Penelope chapter adopted the CYPRESS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL for the Pack-A Sack 4 Kids Program. This program ensures that children in Pasco County do not go hungry over the weekend. Many children are on the “free” or reduced lunch program at school during the week, but are still “FOOD INSECURE”. This means they are at risk of being hungry over the weekend due to various reason. This DOP Chapter wanted to help and they are making a difference for these children. The 2017 Bridge Grant application is being mailing to all chapters and districts. It will also be available on the Foundation website. The DOP Foundation Inc is there to help the chapters and districts in bonding with the communities and so the name of the Daughters of Penelope become more recognized.
