Introduction Welcome to Sonning Tennis Club’s second newsletter solely for the club’s junior membership. During the past few months some new items of equipment have been purchased for the use of the junior membership using income derived both from the coaching revenue and Waitrose’s green tokens, including:  tennis balls (red and orange) and some brightly coloured cones 1

 6 throw down lines, enabling us to easily convert our courts into orange singles and doubles courts In this edition you will find a report on the Loudwell Cup and picnic which was written by Jasmine Thompson, with photographs also taken by Jasmine. I think you will agree that she has done an excellent job. Are there any other budding journalists amongst you? If so, please put pen to paper after a club event and send me your write up. It will then be published in next year’s Junior Topspin.

Junior Events 2014 For the second year in the row we held 3 events, the Junior Tournament, Loudwell Cup and a Christmas Party. Sadly, in May 2014, our Club President, Sheila Loudwell, passed away and her presence at these events was very much missed.

Junior Club Tournament Sunday, June 15th saw 18 of our junior members taking part in the Annual Junior Club Tournament.

Junior Club Tournament 2014 – getting ready for action!

Ages of the children ranged from 7 to 15 and matches were arranged in categories of mini-red, orange and green (for the under 11s), yellow for boys and girls aged 11 and above, and finally teenage girls. 2

A really exciting match was played between Yemo and Ben. At one set all (one of which included a tiebreak) the boys played a deciding 3rd set tie-break with Ben finally winning this 10 - 7.

A fortnight later, on possibly the hottest day in 2014, four teenage boys battled it out to decide who would take home the ‘Hilary Moss Teenage Boys Trophy’. The final Match Score was 6 games all and 10 / 8 in the tiebreak. Last year’s winner, Daniel Curtin Watts retained the cup with Josh Cowling taking the silver medal. Teenage Boys Tournament

This event is now established as a regular fixture on Father’s Day, so all Dads are encouraged to come along and help with scoring on court.

Family Christmas Party We ended 2014 by organising a Party. This year all members of the family were invited to come along and be involved in the fun. It was very well attended with about 20 children and 17 parents taking part. We were delighted to welcome William Cowling, home from University, who must have been one of the first of our members to attend the newly created Junior Club Sessions back in 2003!

SLTC Family Christmas Party 2014

Mr & Mrs Elf

Best Christmas outfit

Lots of games were played, both within family groups and with Coach Sally. Young Henry, aged just 2, was awarded the prize for best Christmas outfit as he looked so cute in his Santa Suit. Two families, the Cowlings and Bayliss-Binks came out with top marks in Mr Elf’s Family Christmas Quiz. After a tie-break question, the quiz was won by the Bayliss-Binks family. 6

The most popular person on the day was possibly the Pizza delivery man - he was greeted with a loud cheer on his arrival. We will certainly be ordering pizzas again at next year’s event! The spicy ones proved to be the most popular.

Dates for your diary Junior Club Calendar – brand new for 2015! For easy reference all dates of events are listed on the Junior Club Calendar, including: Sunday Family Club sessions Tuesday Junior Club sessions Junior Tournaments Coaching Social Events The calendar will be updated from time to time as required.

SLTC Open Day On April 26th we will be holding our annual Open Day, which gives the opportunity for all our members and potential new ones, to come and try out the facilities and meet the club’s coaches. This year I would like to arrange a display table ‘showing off’ our junior section. It wouldn’t be much of a junior section if it wasn’t for our wonderful juniors, so I will be asking for volunteers nearer the time to help with the display and to be on hand to chat to other youngsters.

Junior Club Sessions – moved to Tuesdays! Junior Club Sessions, previously held on Thursday afternoons, have been moved to Tuesday evenings 5 – 6 pm, starting from Tuesday April 21st. All junior members are welcome. As the adult club session starts at 6:30 pm, those juniors of a suitable standard will be invited to mix in with any adults arriving early. This is a way to help children with their transition from junior to adult status at our club.

Family Club Afternoon – brand new for 2015! All family members are welcome to come along and join the fun, one Sunday a month throughout the Summer Season. The session will run from 2 – 4 pm. It is an opportunity for juniors to play with their own and other families. See Junior Club Calendar for dates.

Membership Fees (Juniors) It was agreed at the AGM that membership fees would remain the same for this year with one exception. No, not an increase but a decrease! Juniors aged 15 to 21 years, in full time education, joining by themselves, will only have to pay the junior rate of £25. A real bargain!

Coaching Coaching is available from both Rob Stone (our Head Coach) and Sally Utting from March all the way through to the end of September, on Monday and Wednesday evenings. In addition, there are several dates on Monday mornings during school holidays where coaching with Sally will be available. Parents – why not join either the ‘Rusty Rackets’ or the ‘Complete Beginners’ Groups run by Sally on a Sunday afternoon? Need more intensive tuition? It is also possible to arrange private lessons with Sally during weekdays whilst the children are at school! For full dates, fees and enrolments please contact Hilary Moss – contact details at the end of the newsletter. 8
