Sarstedt quality symbols - a warranty of reliability and reproducibility
To accommodate the highly sophisticated needs of customers working in the field of medical research, environmental technology, the pharmaceutical and food industries as well as in cellular and molecular biology, Sarstedt has developed the Biosphere® quality products. The superior biological purity of sterile laboratory products is guaranteed by a controlled production process that complies with the strictest purity requirements so that our customers can be sure to achieve utmost reproducibility in their analyses and research experiments.
All disposables, such as pipette tips and reaction tubes bearing the Biosphere® symbol are sterile, DNA-, RNase- and ATP-free and non-pyrogenic. To reduce storage time of the sterile Biosphere® products in open bags and inherent contamination risks, Biosphere® tubes and plates are packaged in small quantities. Biosphere® laboratory products are manufactured in accordance with defined production requirements and meet the following threshold values: DNA < 2 x 10-14 g ATP < 3.5 x 10-15 g
RNase < 1.1 x 10-11 Kunitz units Pyrogens < 2 x 10-3 EU
Sterility is validated according to ISO 11135.
PCR and other molecular-biological methods have gained access to laboratories all over the world. Sarstedt has enormously refined the production requirements for non-sterile PCR products. Skilled personnel, clean room conditions along with automated production processes enable contamination-free manufacturing.
Each production batch is subjected to a highly sensitive PCR method to guarantee compliance with the individual quality criteria. Consequently, award of the PCR Performance Tested quality symbol to a production batch is subject to successfully passing PCR tests. Thanks to this quality grade, customers can use Sarstedt disposables in direct contact with reagents and sample material for PCR in their experimental work. Products awarded the PCR Performance Tested standard meet the following requirements:

3 Human DNA-free
3 PCR inhibitor-free
High purity Biosphere® Filter tips for pipetting – free from carry-over contamination Protection against carry-over and contamination Even the most meticulous pipetting may generate aerosols during aspiration of the sample, contaminating the pipette and any sample material to follow. This cross-contamination cannot be tolerated when working with expensive, hazardous, or irreplaceable samples or when using highly sensitive methods. In order to prevent aerosol contamination along with the resulting consequences (falsified results, additional expenditure in time and cost) Sarstedt incorporates special porous elements in its range of filter tips.
Reliable safety with selected filter materials The filter element integrated in the pipette tips consists of a porous plastic material featuring defined hydrophobic properties and no self-sealing additives. • The sponge-like material is densely composed of randomly arranged channels (see picture on left), enabling air to pass for precision when using air displacement pipettes. • Simultaneously, the complex structure of the porous filter safely prevents aerosols from entering the pipette shaft.
Cross section of a porous filter element (40-fold magnification)
Measuring the efficiency of filter inserts in Biosphere® filter tips* Both the PCR-based method and indirect, radioactive measurement of the plasmid DNA with P-32 marked ATP are reliable methods for detecting carry-over contamination of DNA aerosols likely to occur in practical pipetting applications.

• With both methods, the hydrophobic filter inserts with the selected porosity used in Sarstedt Biosphere® filter tips were found to provide protection against aerosol contamination. • The superior efficiency of the filter in Biosphere® filter tips is based on a complex mechanism of absorption, surface quality, thickness, strength and shape.

The pipette tip – Crucial for precise dosing A calibrated system: Pipette and pipette tips The precision of the pipetting process is primarily determined by the optimal compatibility of the pipette and pipette tip. • One of the leading manufacturers of pipette tips, Sarstedt’s main objective for years has been to provide customers with tips in optimal, reliable quality to fit most marketable pipette brands. • The quality of a tip is defined by the properties of the material used, the design and optimum fit on the individual pipettes.
Quality guarantee: Precision and accuracy for small volumes In particular, the ongoing trend towards ever decreasing small sample volumes inevitably involves increasing demands on the dosing system. At regular intervals, Sarstedt tips are checked for maximum precision and reliability in combination with the pipettes of leading manufacturers (e.g. Eppendorf, Gilson). In addition, the tips are subjected to a defined procedure of comprehensive in-process conformity testing in accordance with the international standard EN ISO 8655 for piston pipettes.

Declaration of Conformity for pipette/pipette tip combinations
•
The Declaration of Conformity for piston pipettes indicates the combination of pipette and pipette tip to which it applies attesting precision and reliability and can be made available on request.
• The logo on the label indicates that a standard Declaration of Conformity is available for a particular pipette tip.

Important notes on autoclaving: Products made from PP can be autoclaved up to 121°C without significantly impairing their mechanical properties. Users are to test for themselves if autoclaving may have any effect on other characteristic product features so as to influence the individual application concerned.

Reliable quality – Multiply® reaction tubes for PCR The original Multiply® tubes are the result of consistently improving the design of the more traditional reaction tubes. Enhanced design features of the Multiply® tubes ensure work is risk-free from contamination and non-tiring compared to traditional tubes.
• Integral anti-contamination shield:
Prevents accidental contact with the inner surface of the lid
Easy to open: Anti-contamination shield prevents potential contamination.
• Space-saving lid design:
Frosted, flat lid with large writing area
The frosted surface prevents smearing even when processed in a thermocycler. The space-saving lid design allows complete utilization of the heating block capacity.
• Interchangeable RackSystem for 0.2 ml tubes:
Sample preparation/storage in the RackSystem pipetting station
Small recess at the skirt of the Multiply® PCR tubes allows tubes to be easily removed from the work tray. The small, roughened recess can also be used as an additional writing area. Description for RackSystem see page 23
• Additional benefits of the Multiply® product range: • On request, we also offer conveniently packaged small quantities of products certified to the sterile Biosphere®, or ‘PCR Performance Tested’ quality standard • Variety of options • Optimum heat transfer thanks to thin-walled reaction space • Compatible on thermocyclers with 0.2 and 0.5 ml block formats • Enables micro centrifugation in most commonly used micro centrifuges (with adapter, as required)

NEW: White PCR plates for quantitative PCR
• 10-fold fluorescence level • Improved sensitivity • Enhanced reproducibility
Cost-effective miniaturisation of qPCR assay in white Multiply® PCR plates Fluorescence-based applications like qPCR, particularly those involving small volumes, benefit from the significantly improved reflection characteristics of the white wells. Specimens of low DNA concentration, too, can be more easily detected (see Fig. 1). Compared to transparent wells, a 10-fold fluorescence level can be measured with white wells. Thanks to maximum signal reflection, Ct values are obtained earlier (see Fig. 2). In white plates sealed with qPCR compatible tapes, the reagent volume (SYBR Green) per well can be reduced from 25µl to 15µl without significant changes in sensitivity and stability, enabling a 40% decrease in qPCR reagent costs. In addition, the white plates minimise adverse effects like “cross talk” that would increase well-to-well variability in transparent wells.

Adhesive sealing tapes for qPCR/PCR, automation and sample storage
Adhesive sealing tapes for qPCR Hermetical sealing of micro test plates made from polypropylene, polystyrene and polycarbonate to exclude evaporation and protect samples during applications, storage and transport requires tailor-made tape materials. The Sarstedt range includes a variety of sealing tapes specially designed to meet the sophisticated requirements of PCR, storage of active substances, and High Throughput Screening. All tapes are produced under clean room conditions to exclude contamination with DNase/ RNase and nucleic acids.
Highly transparent adhesive tape for quantitative PCR The 50 µm polyolefin film is coated with a smear-free, crystal clear adhesive that shows minimal adhesion at room temperature and is, therefore, exceptionally easy to handle. Thanks to the initially low stickiness, the film on the PCR plate can be easily shifted to the correct position, if necessary. The strong adhesive effect is brought about during PCR and as a result of the heat produced by the cover, minimising loss by evaporation. • Highly transparent film ideally suited for real-time PCR and other fluorescence-based applications
NEW
• Excellent sealing properties with minimised evaporation values due to innovative adhesive • No distortion under thermal strain / prevents cross contamination • Does not stick to skin or gloves during application • Compatible with aqueous solutions and organic solvents like DMSO, acetonitrile and methanol • Functional sealing range: -70°C to 110°C

UV-Transparent Disposable Cuvettes for photometric analyses in the UV range ≥ 220 nm The plastic material of the half micro cuvette enables measurements in the UV range from wave lengths of 220 nm. Contamination caused by the repeated rinsing processes required for quartz glass cuvettes can be avoided by using the UV-transparent disposable cuvette. Apart from non-certified UV cuvettes, our range includes a certified option individually sealed with a cap and packed in a Styrofoam container to protect from scratches.
Typical applications and product features •
Photometric analysis of nucleic acids at 260 nm and proteins at 280 nm
•
Low UV absorbance for DNA, RNA and protein quantification
•
Compatible with photometers of 8.5 mm and 15 mm light centre height: Eppendorf Biophotometer, ThermoSpectronic, Perkin Elmer, Bio-Rad, Analytica Jena etc.
•
Minimizes absorbance deviations due to consistently accurate optical quality
•
Economical low-cost alternative to quartz cuvettes
•
Certified UV cuvettes (DNA-/RNase-/Protein-free) individually sealed with caps optionally available for safe sample storage and prevention of contamination
For measurements in the short-wave UV range below 300 nm, the material-related self-absorptive characteristics of PS and acrylic (PMMA) cuvettes increase distinctively as their transmission ration decreases.
