Sand Binders Rosetta Step - Fieldstone Blend

Cleaners & Sealers A new pavement is an opportune time to apply one of our specialty sealers. Although not necessary, sealers are an option that will enhance the richness of the colors, reduce staining, make clean-up easier, and help keep sand in the joints. Cleaning and sealing also can restore the original appearance of concrete pavers exposed to weathering over time. Start by cleaning the pavement. A household cleaner such as Simple Green® is usually sufficient to remove dirt and grime. Efflorescence, rust, fertilizer, grease, tar and tire marks require specialty cleaners. Contact your Ideal Dealer for information. There are a number of sealers on the market – some better than others. We recommend environmentally-friendly acrylic water-based sealers available in either a low-gloss satin finish or a high gloss “wet-look.” If you prefer a product that offers protection without leaving a sheen, a water-based siloxane is a good choice. You may want to consider products that offer sand stabilization and sealing all-in-one. Choose a natural look or one that provides a pleasing satin sheen. Both types are water-based “green products” that are sprayed onto the pavement then squeegeed off. They may be applied immediately after pavement completion because they will not trap efflorescence. Contact your Ideal Dealer for product information.

SnapEdge® is our other professional-grade edging. SnapEdge is a one-piece system that securely holds straight layouts, or with a few snips, easily follows curved pavement designs.

Proper edge restraint is essential for a long lasting and durable sand-set paving system. While a house foundation or curbing is suitable - grass and sod are not! We recommend Pave Edge® or SnapEdge® professional-grade edgings designed specifically for concrete pavers.

Our pavers and walls are made with natural ingredients. Look closely and you will find a unique character to each and every paver and wall unit. In fact, no two look exactly alike. You will find subtle variations in color and texture for a truly natural appearance. Our color blends contain two or more pigments to achieve a random variegation and even our solid colors have shade variations. Please remember that, unlike a painted or stained surface, concrete products have inherent texture and shade variations. The product you receive may vary in color and texture from samples, and cubes of product may contain a different percentage of colors and textures than shown in this catalog. Smaller size units offer a greater distribution of color range compared to larger units. As with dye lots in fabric or carpet, you should try to purchase your pavers and walls all at one time. When installing, product should be selected randomly from several cubes to obtain uniform color distribution. 33

Pavers by Ideal ® offers a wide range of attractive paver shapes that can create Patterns with Style™ and designs that no other paving material can match! The color, shape, and visual texture of our concrete pavers are all important elements that add ambiance to any landscape setting. Create eye-catching pavements by using different colors to compose patterns or weave contrasting textures of tumbled and traditional paver styles together. You can even design custom patterns with 3-dimensional graphic design effects! Most of our shapes can be installed in a number of patterns. Proper Planning

Whether your project involves pavers or walls, careful planning is essential for success. If you have decided to do the job yourself, draw a diagram of the work area on graph paper. Be sure to include all measurements that will be helpful in calculating the materials needed for the job. It is always best to check with your local building department to see if a permit is necessary...especially if building a retaining wall along property lines.

For most residential pedestrian applications, such as patios, pool decks, and walkways, any pattern can be used. While running bond and basketweave or parquet patterns are suitable for residential driveways, herringbone patterns provide the greatest degree of interlock. Stack bond patterns and larger paver sizes such as our 12" x 12" Plaza Pavers should be utilized only in areas subjected to foot traffic.

When visiting your local Pavers by Ideal ® Authorized Dealer to make your final selection of paver or wall styles and colors, take your sketch with you. Discuss the pattern and shapes you have chosen. They will help you determine the proper amount of pavers or wall units, edge restraint, sand, gravel, and other materials you may need. You can easily clean dirt and grime, remove efflorescence and rust or oil stains, and prevent weed or ant infestation in the jointing sand. A newly cleaned pavement is an opportune time to apply one of our specially-formulated sealers, which intensify the color and provide a barrier that helps prevent stains from penetrating into the surface. Depending on Unsealed Sealed the amount of sheen you prefer, driveways may require resealing every 2-3 years, while patios and walks may only need reapplication every 4-5 years. For Tumbled ScapeStone, the depth and width of excavation is only 8" deep by 18" wide and only 4" of base material is required. GravityStone retaining walls, pillars, and free-standing walls require different construction methods. Please see our wall guides for more information on installation.

Hiring AContractor Larger or more complex design projects, such as those that require extensive excavation or disposal of asphalt and other materials, may be better left to contractors who have the equipment to get the job done quickly and more economically. Some even provide design assistance as part of their services. Your Pavers by Ideal ® Authorized Dealer can often help you find a reputable, experienced contractor. If you decide to hire a professional contractor, here are some useful questions you should ask to help you make the right choice. • How long have they been installing pavers or walls? • Have they attended training sessions conducted by Pavers by Ideal ® or by the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute? Special Considerations

• Do they have a current liability insurance certificate? While they are on your property, they should be insured for any damage or injuries that may occur. Check your homeowner’s insurance policy for coverage of the contractor while on your property. Can the contractor provide proof that Worker Compensation insurance covers everyone on the job?

Walls 4' and higher, terraced walls, sites with weak or wet soils, slopes and other loading conditions, such as a driveway above the wall, require special consideration. These are reinforced walls that are built using other construction techniques, including the use of geogrid and we recommend using a soils Stonewall Straight Face Granite Gray engineer and a professional contractor for these situations. Questions & Answers Will de-icing salts damage my pavers? No. High density concrete pavers are formulated to resist deterioration from deicing salts that are applied at the proper application rates. If a paver gets broken or damaged, can it be replaced? Yes. We recommend that you save a few pavers from your initial installation, just in case you need to replace one or two. Do pavers lose color after they have been installed for a while? The pigments used to color concrete pavers are very stable. Dirt and normal wear from traffic and weather may appear to change the color over time. Cleaning and sealing can restore and enhance the color. Will a segmental landscape wall support a deck or fence? Yes. However, any structure above the wall must be anchored into concrete tubes placed at least 3' behind the wall.

What is the whitish haze I sometime see on pavers and walls? Most likely, it is efflorescence, which is a white deposit that sometimes appears on the surface of concrete, masonry, or clay products. Although it can come from a number of sources, efflorescence is often a natural by-product of cement hydration. Technically known as calcium hydroxide, it appears as a white film when carried to the surface by moisture. The good news is that efflorescence is not indicative of a flawed product. Although it’s unsightly when it first appears, in many cases it is scoured off during installation, or if desired, it can be removed using specialty cleaners. Otherwise it will lessen or dissipate over time. For more information, ask your dealer for Ideal’s Efflorescence Information sheet. What is the difference between pins, tongue and groove, rear lip, or clips that the various segmental wall systems use? Is one better than the others? There is very little difference between them. They simply serve to connect the units together and create a set-back. A wall develops resistance to soil pressure through the depth and weight of the block, batter of the wall, and friction between the units. Yankee Cobble™ - Harvest Blend

Is it OK to use stone dust for a bedding layer under pavers? No. Stone dust traps water and gets spongy, which can cause rutting and settlement. Use coarse concrete sand or stone sand that conforms to ASTM C-33.

Is there a way to prevent weeds from growing between the joints of the pavers? Will using a landscape fabric or plastic sheeting help?

Yankee Cobble ™ - Beacon Hill Blend

Weeds grow from windblown seeds that fall onto pavers and germinate down into the joints. They do not grow up from below, so using a landscape fabric or plastic sheeting is unnecessary. Weeds can be removed by hand, or with a biodegradable herbicide, such as Roundup®. Sealers or sand binders can be useful in helping prevent weed growth and ants.

There is a low spot on my paver driveway. Are the pavers defective? No. Settlement is often caused by inadequate soil or base compaction, or by poor drainage caused by using the wrong type of gravel. This can be easily repaired by taking up the pavers, correcting the problem and reinstating the pavers.

Can I park cars above my segmental landscape wall? Yes. Segmental retaining walls are frequently used to provide support to parking areas. However, the wall should be engineered and typically requires the use of geogrid. Vehicles should not be allowed to park within 3' from the back of the wall.

Will snow plows damage or dislodge my pavers? No. Properly installed pavers fit tightly together and form a uniform surface that presents no problem for plows, snowblowers, and shovels. Can I use gravel behind my wall instead of 3/4" crushed stone? No. It is very important that 3/4" crushed stone be used in order to provide proper drainage and prevent build up of hydrostatic pressure, which can lead to wall failure.

Are pavers slippery when wet? No. Our pavers have been tested and surpass ADA standards for slip resistance. They also provide excellent skid-resistance under wet or dry conditions. Can I use a sealer on a pool deck? We do not recommend using a sealer on pool decks unless it is a penetrating non-film sealer. Other sealers act like a magnifying glass on the surface of the pavers, which raises the temperature to a point that may be uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. How high can I build a segmental landscape wall without geogrid? For most conventional landscape walls, the maximum height is 4' when measured from the top of the footing. When using GravityStone, maximum wall height is 8'. Walls over these heights should be designed by an engineer and constructed by a professional contractor. Can segmental walls be used to create raised patio areas? Yes. Segmental landscape walls are an excellent way to add more outdoor living space. They are used to encase and support the gravel you would add to bring the raised area to the desired height. These wall systems also allow you to easily incorporate stairs or steps into the raised patio. Do I need a concrete footing to support my segmental landscape wall? No. Unless the soil is extremely weak, a firmly compacted gravel footing is sufficient to support the wall and possesses the ability to accommodate natural movement of the wall. Is it necessary to start my retaining wall below the frost line? No. Unlike rigid retaining walls, segmental landscape wall systems are flexible structures and can accommodate slight movement and even settlement without cracking or other types of distress.

In preparing our comparison section, we choose to describe costs without assigning actual amounts because there are many factors that affect costs. For projects that are professionally installed, the size of the job, the location, access to the site, and overhead recovery are just some of the factors that contractors use in determining price. In do-it-yourself projects, generally only the cost of the materials is accounted for - labor is often considered as “sweat equity”.
