Step 6 Choose to D.I.Y. or hire a professional contractor. See page 18 for a quick guide to laying pavers.

General tips Tip 1

Select pavers that match internal floor coverings to ensure the transition from indoor out is subtle and blends with your decorating style.

Tip 2

Combining large and small format pavers can add textural qualities for a more distinctive space.

Tip 3

When paving a small space keep the design simple and use a neutral coloured, large format paver to create a sense of space.

Tip 4

Midland Brick recommends that concrete/masonry pavers be sealed with a quality penetrating sealer following installation. We recommend bullnose paving be sealed on both sides prior to installation. See page 18 for more information.

Tip 5

Large format pavers, such as Stylestone® and Promenade™ speed up the laying process.

16 how to build gardenwall 1 Check with your local council

4 Locate your wall Mark out the ground where your wall will be located (either by marking with stakes and a string line or by marking a line on the ground with spray paint). Take caution when building near boundary fences. Never install where surcharge loading (eg. buildings, driveways) will be located within 1 metre of the wall.

You should consult with your local council for design regulations prior to the construction of your wall. Councils generally require, and we recommend, retaining walls greater than 500mm in height and walls located near surcharge loading such as a house or a roadway be designed and certified by a suitably qualified engineer. Each council has different requirements so check with your local council before starting.

2 Calculate how many blocks are required To calculate the approximate number of blocks needed, go online and use our blocks calculator, or multiply the length by the height of your wall to determine the area (m2). Once you have established this, simply multiply m2 by the number of units per m2 (27.1). Block Dimensions: 295x200x125mm. There are 27.1 blocks per m2. This system may be used for walls up to 800mm high.

3

Prepare the site Tips on calculating blocks It is often worth adding some extra blocks to allow for any cutting (usually adding an extra 5% will cover you). Don’t forget when ordering to specify colour and type of units required. Example: A Gardenwall 0.7m high x 10m long = 7m2 x 27.1 blocks = 190 blocks + 5% = 200 blocks required

5

Lay the first course Remove the retaining lip on the base of the unit (this makes levelling the first course much easier). To remove the lug place at an angle on the ground and strike firmly with a hammer. Wear appropriate eye and foot protection whilst doing this. Remove the lip on enough units to lay the first course only. Place blocks side by side on the levelling pad using a string line along the back of the units for alignment. Level each unit side-to-side and front to back using your spirit level. We recommend you place black builders plastic along the back of the wall. This will help reduce the flow of water draining through the front of the wall and cut down the effect of efflorescence (harmless white powdery deposit) which can form on the wall. If required, install appropriate agricultural drain behind the first course and surround with gravel or to specifications provided by a suitable qualified engineer. Agricultural drains may be required if soil has poor drainage, eg. clay type soils.

Thoroughly level the area for the base or foundation course. Take your time to carefully prepare for the first course, this is vital in ensuring a good result. Remove any roots, debris or soft earth. Create a shallow footing trench for the base course by levelling the ground and tamping down the earth so it is flat and level. Gardenwall – approx. 200mm deep and 350mm wide. Compact by either manually tamping or using a mechanical plate compactor. Fill the trench with coarse sand or road base if required, then compact and level until it forms a 100mm levelling pad (so that your first course will be partially sunken).

Tips for setting the first course Spend time on making sure the units are level. Otherwise all ensuing courses and ultimately, the entire wall, will not be level.

Backfill and compact If required, place drainage material (12-20mm sized gravel) to 150mm wide behind your first course. Shovel and compact your backfill (existing site soil) behind the drainage material. Please note: Backfill should be no higher than the top of the retaining wall (please see Gardenwall Cross Section).

Tips for backfilling Make sure the site soil or backfill is good draining soil and that you compact it well. If you don’t, you may find water will build up behind your wall and start to push it over.

7

Additional courses

8 Finishing the wall Now you can landscape the area to complete your garden design.

Tips for building curves When building to the maximum height of 800mm, it is necessary to start at a 500mm radius. This will ensure all additional courses fit neatly.

Sweep the top of the previous course clean. Place the next course of units in a half bond pattern (ie. with the vertical joints from the first course units halfway across the second course units). Lay the following courses of units as per previous courses. You will need to backfill at least every alternate course. Continue stacking units and backfilling until your wall is complete.

Important Information Retaining walls should not be installed over their maximum specified height or into cuttings where the base soil or backfill is not firm, or is of expansive clay. Never install where surcharge loading (eg. buildings, driveways) will be located within one metre of the wall. Councils in general require those retaining walls over 500mm in height and/or where there is loading, such as a car or house near the retaining wall, be designed and certified by a suitably qualified engineer. General Information: This is general information and should be viewed as a guide only. Midland Brick recommends you obtain building advice for your project before commencing works. NOTE: The width of blocks may vary by ±3mm. All weights and number of units per square metre are approximate only. Tested to Australian Standard AS4455.

18 how to lay pavers 1 Prepare the site

Determine your finished paved surface level, remember to consider the following: • finished paving must be below the damp proof course level of the building. Paver • paving must slope away Bedding layer A from the building. Base layer • allow for the depth of the B base layer, bedding sand Natural ground A 30mm (3cm) and paver (Figure 1). B Generally 100mm (10cm) for road base Excavate the area to be FIGURE 1 paved. This depth should allow for the base layer, bedding sand and paver. Refer to Figure 1 for approximate depths. Ensure the ground level is even.

2 Base layer

For trafficable areas, spread the base layer (e.g. road base or well-graded crushed limestone) evenly over the prepared ground to a minimum depth of 100mm. Rake to an even thickness before compaction. Compaction of road base is usually performed using a plate compactor (Figure 2).

4 Laying the pavers

joint filling sand

100mm

compacted sub grade

bedding sand layer

Compact the pavers using a mechanical plate compactor with a piece of clean carpet mat under the compactor to prevent the pavers from being scratched or damaged. After the first pass of the compactor sweep in more jointing sand and compact again before sweeping off excess sand (Figure 5).

FIGURE 2

8 Sealing of pavers FIGURE 3

2-3mm gap

compacted sub base

Usually expansion of the paving mass occurs due to the change in ambient temperature. Darker coloured pavers tend to move more and the paving will always give way where the weakest point is, which is usually the edge restraint.

7 Compacting the pavers

total pavement thickness

FIGURE 4

However, in large areas of flexible paving restrained by walls, kerbing, etc or long driveways it may be necessary to include control joints. A control joint consists of a 10-15mm gap between the sections of the pavers. Spacing of the control joints will vary depending on the design and control joints shall be positioned to coincide with points of weakness, re-entrant corners and centres not exceeding 6 metres. Control joints can be filled using a compressible material such as Abel Flex.

Sweep dry, fine white washed sand over the paved area ensuring that all the joints are full.

Setting Out. The best way to ensure your paving pattern stays in line is to use a grid of string lines spaced at exact intervals around the perimeter of the job. Cutting – When cutting, ensure product is fully wetted (soaked with water) to reduce the chance of discolouration from cutting slurry entering the product surface. Similarly, wash any slurry from cut product before laying and make sure slurry does not fall onto laid product. Edge Restraints prevent the pavers from moving horizontally and also restrain the sand and road base (Figure 4). Place the pavers gently on the sand bed leaving a gap of 2-3mm between each unit (this prevents chipping). However, most Midland Brick pavers now have spacer nibs. Ensure pavers are selected down the side of the pallets and randomly from different pallets to ensure an all over blend. edge restraint barrier

Control joints are generally not required when pavers are laid over unbound bedding sand and appropriate gaps are incorporated between adjacent pavers.

6 Joint filling

3 Bedding layer

Spread and screed a clean fill sand. The easiest way to screed the sand flat is to use two guides and a screeding board. Place screeding guides in position and spread a layer of bedding sand over the guides. Pull the screeding board over the screeding guides to obtain a uniform depth of 30mm (Figure 3). When the sand is screeded remove the guides and fill in the tracks with bedding sand and smooth off.

5 Control Joints

100mm

FIGURE 5

To ensure the optimum appearance of your pavers and to reduce maintenance Midland Brick suggests the sealing of masonry pavers as soon as they are laid and are completely dry. Please consult a sealer manufacturer or contractor for expert advice. The sealer will help slow down the absorption of any spill but remember it is important to act quickly. For instance, if you spill red wine, wash the pavers immediately. WARNING: Hydrochloric acid is NOT recommended for use with any masonry pavers as irreparable surface damage may occur.

Safety tips Ensure that you read the operating manuals of all equipment including hired equipment such as mechanical plate compactors and cutting equipment. Always operate equipment according to the manufacturer’s instructions and wear the appropriate safety clothing listed by the manufacturer. Check the condition of hand tools such as mallets, etc., to make sure they are in a safe working order before use.

Note To achieve the best results from your pavers it is recommended that your pavement be designed by a suitably qualified engineer and installed by an accredited paviour.

19 important information General Ordering Product. When ordering product, we recommend they are all delivered at the same time to ensure colour consistency as colours will vary within and between batches. Product Inspection. We strongly recommend at all times there be careful inspections and supervision of all blocks and pavers delivered to ensure satisfactory results prior to and during installation. Any complaints regarding product should be directed to the place of purchase PRIOR to laying. Sizing. Product supplied is within the dimensional tolerances specified in Australia/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4455. For further information please contact Midland Brick. Sizes and number per square metre are nominal only and subject to variance due to installation technique, product colour and size variation through manufacturing processes. Please consult your Midland Brick Sales Advisor if mixing various colours into patterns. Colour Blending. For the best colour blending results, blend your blocks and pavers from various packs as you lay. Ask our sales advisors for more information or go to www.midlandbrick.com.au Colour Variation. Products on display are examples. Variation will occur naturally within a production run and with each production run of products. Chipping and Breakage. Some minor chipping and breakage can occur during the delivery, offloading and installation of products. It is recommended that this product be used for cuts and infills. Cutting. When cutting products, please ensure that the product is fully wetted (soaked with water), to reduce the chance of discolouration from cutting slurry entering the product surface. Similarly, ensure all slurry is washed from any cut product before laying. Ensure that no cutting slurry falls on surface of product  already laid. For more information visit www.midlandbrick.com.au Cleaning. Ensure that no acid based products are used to clean surfaces of masonry or Stylestone products. Please consult Midland Brick on 13 15 40 for further advice or visit www.midlandbrick.com.au

Pavers Paver Face. Some pavers have subtle variation in colour and texture where either face can be used. The choice is yours. Paving Dimensions/Pattern Design. Dimensions quoted are nominal only. Actual manufactured size will vary between batch runs, product type and colour of paver. Please consult your Midland Brick Sales Advisor, especially when mixing various colours into patterns. Paving Installation. In accordance with accepted engineering principles, Midland Brick recommends allowing a 2-3mm joint between pavers for clean jointing sand to be swept in between pavers to ensure effective lock up and the use of a base layer under all segmental pavement subjected to vehicular traffic. Please refer to Midland Brick technical literature for specific recommendations or contact Midland Brick. For more information download the brochure from www.midlandbrick.com.au

Crossovers and Driveways. In accordance with accepted engineering principles Midland Brick recommends the use of a sub-base layer under all segmental brick pavement subjected to vehicular traffic as referred to in Midland Brick’ Crossover and Driveway document. When paving crossovers you should first contact your local shire to ensure you comply with their specifications. Visit www.midlandbrick. com.au or talk to your Sales Advisor. Bedding Sand. Bedding material should be a well graded clean sand. A well graded concreting or plasterer’s sand is considered suitable. Salt attack is a potential problem with some clay and masonry paving and the capillary break provided by the bedding sand is essential. Fatty sands, loams or packing sands are not suitable. Joint Filling Sand. Should be clean, sharp, well graded and finer than bedding sand with no soluble salts and no excessive fine material. A washed dry white sand is recommended. Abrasive Objects. Minor edge chipping can occur when steel drum rollers, mowers or edgers pass over paving bricks. When moving the above machinery across pavers, insertion of a rubber strip or carpet between paver and machine will alleviate this chipping. Tyre Markings. Tyre markings may appear on any type of pavement surface due to tyre compounds, vehicle weight, direction and the action of power steering. For more information visit www.midlandbrick.com.au for advice on cleaning. Swimming Pools. Where paving is to be used for pool edging, it is recommended that you use our matching Bullnose pavers. Paving should be protected with a suitable sealer to a minimum width of 2m from the pool edge. For a suitable sealer please consult with a sealer manufacturer for expert advice. Sealers should be renewed periodically as recommended by the sealer manufacturer. When clay or masonry product is subjected to severe salt attack situations, some deterioration may occur over time. For bullnose pavers we recommend sealing both sides of the paver prior to installation. Handmade Pavers. To maintain the traditional character of handmade pavers, they will vary in size and colour. We invite you to personally select ‘Handmade’ pavers at the Middle Swan Sales Office, as each firing creates a very individual look. Our Sales Advisors will be pleased to help you select for your project. Colour Fastness. All concrete pavers will fade over time when exposed to direct sunlight. To maintain and enhance the chosen colour, sealing the pavers is recommended. Contact sealer manufacturers for further information. Sealing. To protect the life of your finished project and to allow easy cleaning Midland Brick recommends that your paving be sealed, in particular paving in coastal areas or harsh environments. The application of a sealer will protect your investment and maintain the paver’s appearance. Contact sealer manufacturers for further information. Also see swimming pool comment above. Efflorescence. A white powdery deposit known as efflorescence may sometimes appear on any concrete or masonry product. Efflorescence appears due to the migration of salts via evaporation to the surfaces of the paver. This is a temporary effect as the pavers acclimatise to their new environment. To remove efflorescence and other forms of staining please refer to our cleaning information or refer to www.midlandbrick.com.au for further information.
