Text 2 The largest desert in the world, the Sahara, covers most of North Africa and is about the size of the United States. From east to west it is about 4,800 kilometers, bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean and on the east by the Red Sea. The Sahara Desert is so wide that it divides Africa into two parts, North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. Many people think that the Sahara always stays the same, but this is not true. It is sometimes shrinking and sometimes growing, sometimes wet and sometimes dry. In fact at one time it was a place of rain and greenery. Around 20,000 years ago the desert was hot and dry and even larger than it is today, but then, about 10,000 years ago, the monsoons began. Because of these heavy rains, lakes and rivers formed. Additionally, trees and plants began to grow. As a consequence, animals such as the elephant, hippopotamus, rhinoceros and crocodile started to live in the Sahara, and there were over thirty types of fish, some more than two meters in length. The first people to move into this area may have come from Egypt‟s Nile Valley. They moved to the Sahara and set up small villages where they raised animals such as sheep and goats. Life in the Sahara was in full swing. However, about 7,000 years ago the rains slowed, the Sahara became a desert again, and the people moved back to the Nile Valley. Today the Sahara Desert has temperatures as high as 57.7 Celsius. The Sahara‟s average rainfall is less than 7.6 centimeters per year and some parts of the desert do not get any rain for years. Although the Sahara is very hot and dry there are some people who live there. Most of these are nomads, people who move from place to place. These nomads eat rice, dates and other foods that are easy to carry, and for meat they have camel and goat. There are also a few Berber people, most of whom live in Morocco and Algeria. The Berbers raise sheep and cattle and live in small straw houses, clay huts or tents. Because of the harsh weather there are not a lot of people living in the Sahara now. But who knows, maybe someday the heavy rain will return, once again transforming it into a lush, green place filled with people, animals, trees and plants.

Text 3 Many people today have heard of Botox. It is a popular chemical substance that treatment centers around the world use to make people look younger and less tired by temporarily removing lines from their faces. However, few people know that Botox is one of the most poisonous natural substances in the world, and in large quantities it can kill people. Commercially called Botox or Dysport today, its official name is “botulinum toxin.” In the early 1800s, a German doctor, Justinus Kerner, named botulinum “sausage poison” and “fatty poison” because it often appears in meat. Although botulinum is a poison, when injected under the skin in small doses it relaxes muscles and makes faces appear younger. It is often used to lessen the lines around people‟s eyes (called crow’s feet), between their eyebrows, and on their foreheads. In 1988, the Allergan Company gave this substance the name Botox and began to sell it as a beauty product. Now there are thousands of treatment centers around the world where you can go to get a Botox treatment. The Dubai Cosmetic Surgery Center, for example, offers these treatments, and says that they will make you look younger and less tired, and make you feel better about yourself. Some people, however, are not so sure about Botox treatments. For example, Botox is now approved for use in Canada, yet some Canadians want more research done on it. They worry that because Botox is a poison, if it spreads from the face to other parts of the body it could cause injury or even death. Other people, however, say this is not true. The Allergan Company claims that no one has ever died from Botox treatments, and treatment centers say that Botox is very safe. Because Botox is a poison, it‟s very likely that people will continue to argue about how safe it is to use for beauty treatments. But it appears that many people around the world, both men and women, are willing to risk possible harm from Botox in order to achieve a more youthful look.
