ORDINARY TIME “ Everything is well … when it is done as God wishes.” St. Vincent Pallotti

There is a vey special celebration coming in October. Our Fr. Fausto will be 80 years old! I think we would confess we are better people today because of Fr. Fausto’s love and mercy. He has always supported our church, school and soon the new art and athletic complex, Zazarino Center, which contributes to the mental and physical development of countless children attending St. Martha School. The parishioners will celebrate his birthday on Saturday, October 3, in the Parish Center at 6:30 p.m. The parents at St. Martha School have decided to honor Fr. Fausto with a very special event on Saturday, October 17, at the Ritz Carlton. This special event will be attended by our Bishop Dewane, the Mayor of Sarasota, members of the Knights of Columbus, and the Superior Vicar from Rome. There will be an elegant reception and dinner with no auctions…silent or live…quiet music, many dignitaries, and good company as we gather to show our love and support. All will receive a special remembrance of the evening. This is a fundraising event, and the $1,000 per person donation will benefit the Zazarino Center with a special Prayer Garden in Fr. Fausto’s honor. Thanks to the leadership of Bridget Spiess and Nigel Mould, we have been blessed to receive all but $500,000 of the Zazarino Center's cost. This event, if fruitful, also will allow us to install a new (AC) chiller that will save more than 50% in electric bills. We hope many of our generous parishioners will join in this special celebration for our pastor, Fr. Fausto. If you are interested in joining us to honor Fr. Fausto, please contact Bridget Spiess at 941-720-6304.

2015 YEAR OF CONCECRATED LIFE During this special year declared by Pope Francis and dedicated to celebrating and offering thanks for the gift of consecrated life, Bishop Dewane invites the faithful to join him at a Mass for all Religious Women and Men in the Diocese of Venice. The Mass is Saturday, October 31, 11:00 am at Epiphany Cathedral, 310 Sarasota Street, Venice. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. All are welcome and encourage to attend. This is an opportunity to offer gratitude and encouragement to the many men and women who have given their lives in consecration to Jesus Christ.

P SALTER W EEK I

From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ... My Dear Friends, IT IS WITH GREAT JOY THAT WE AMERICAN CATHOLICS WELCOME OUR LOVED AND BELOVED HOLY FATHER POPE FRANCIS, this week. He will first come close to our Florida shores, visiting Cuba on September 19, then arriving in our Capital, Washington, D.C., on September 22, to meet with the President, then to New York City for two days, and will address the U.N., finally completing his journey in Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families. He will end his eight day journey returning to Rome on September 27. I pray that we Catholics will offer our Holy Communion this and next weekend for his safety, good health, and the acceptance of his Christ-like message of forgiving mercy and immense love. Like a shepherd that leaves the 99 sheep in Rome, he comes looking for the lost ones. We Catholics join him in searching and welcoming home all our brothers and sisters that have left Jesus’ house and Jesus’ reception in His body and blood (Holy Communion.) Let us never forget Jesus words: IT IS MERCY I DESIRE, NOT SACRIFICE. It is the salvation of sinners God desires, not their death. So let us together pray that His message will resound in our consciences and hearts...not just in us Catholics, his children, but also in the hearts of all people of good will. TODAY’S FIRST READING CONTINUES THE THEME OF THE SUFFERING SERVANT IN WHICH THE PROPHET ISAIAH FORESAW JESUS’ SUFFERING AND DEATH.

The Gospel gives us Jesus’ prophecy of His own death. Jesus did try, as in the Transfiguration, to forewarn His disciples about His passion, His death, but also of His Resurrection from the dead. The disciples, all mired in the glory of miracles and of the adoring crowds, could not even conceive of the death of such a young and powerful miracle-worker and Messiah. And Jesus is teaching them that the Messiah is not a king like David, sent to set Israel free from the Roman domination, but the suffering Messiah, sent to set all people free from the devils’ yoke of slavery. But this revelation was too incomprehensible and absurd to Jesus’ enthusiastic followers, as shown in last Sunday’s Gospel, when Peter tried to convince Jesus that His message of doom was not appropriate, and as shown in today’s Gospel, when Mark wrote: “Though they failed to understand His words, they were afraid to question Him.” And in this sentence we find two sins, so common among us; the first one is to fail to see God’s hand in our lives and disappointments, forgetting that God is in control even when we think that God is asleep at times because of tremendous and frightening happenings such as wars, massacres, slaughters of innocent people (just think of the millions of babies killed every year through abortion), or even in the so-called Acts of God: earthquakes, droughts, hurricanes! Did you thank God for escaping Isaac’s fury? The other sin is FEAR, and is a consequence of the

S E P T E M B E R 20, 2 0 1 5 first sin, because we have not recognized God’s hand in our lives and we have jumped to the conclusion that we are utterly alone in a world gone mad. Jesus told us: “Fear is useless, what is needed is trust … why are you so frightened, ye people of little faith”. Let us pray today to have Jesus increase our faith and trust in His love for us and to stick with Him, even to the point of being crucified with Him, because the glorious resurrection and eternal life will be our certain destiny. BEFORE HIS UPCOMING VISIT, Pope Francis wrote a MOTU PROPRIO regarding “Authority extended to all priests.” The following is an excerpt from the September 4, 2015, L’Osservatore Romano (English Edition) regarding his offering of mercy and forgiveness: “Under church law, excommunication latae sentential is incurred by committing one of a set of especially grave sins, which include heresy, desecration of the Eucharist and a physical attack on the pope. This set includes willful killing of the unborn, thus anyone who willingly participates in an abortion—including the pregnant woman, the abortion provider and any assistants—incurs excommunication latae sententia, which normally can be lifted only by the local bishop. In some countries, for instance the United States, most if not all bishops have for years granted their priests the faculty to remove the penalty of excommunication if it was incurred. However, in this Year of Mercy, which starts December 8 and ends November 20, 2016, Pope Francis has chosen to extend to all Catholic priests the authority to “absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it.” PONDER THIS—written by a Pagan Roman author before the birth of Christ, OVID AMORES, Book II, XIV: Why should girls be exempt from war-service and refuse to follow the Amazons if they carry lethal weapons in peace-time and suffer self-inflicted wounds? The first woman to tear a embryo from the womb should have died of that assault herself. How can you fight this duel on the sands of death simply to save your stomach a few wrinkles? If the mothers of old had followed your vicious example mankind would be extinct— NEXT WEEKEND, THE ST. MARTHA ROSARY MAKERS will have their yearly Rosary Giveaway in the Courtyard after all Masses. All rosaries are made by our Rosary Makers and blessed by our priests. They are not for sale, but donations are accepted. WELCOME BACK TO ALL OUR SEASONAL RESIDENTS! It is always nice to see the friendly faces of those who have been away. If you have questions, call our parish office at 366-4210! Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha’s priests: Frs. Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry; Deacons Bill, Patrick, & Kevin; Brs. Bill, Tom, Paul & Lawrence and Srs. Cathy & Marianne

POST-ABORTION RECONCILIATION Pope Francis recently released a letter stating that he granted all priests worldwide the faculty “to absolve the sin of abortion” during the Year of Mercy. To clarify, most U.S. bishops have “routinely granted” priests the right to remove the penalty and let the confessed woman return to good standing. This has been the case in the Diocese of Venice in Florida for many years. The Diocese of Venice is proud to have a long-standing and recently expanded program for women who are suffering after abortion called Project Rachel. This confidential program provides women hope and healing after an abortion. Please call Fonda at 239719-7210 for questions and details about the next healing retreat.   Nov. 14—The Annual Friendship Luncheon at Temple Emanu-El on behalf of the Social Action Committee and members of Temple Emanu -El. Tickets will be offered in October. Nov. 21—The Annual Diocesan Youth Rally at the Charlotte Harbor Event Center, Punta Gorda. All 7th through 12th graders are invited to attend. Humility and Service Jesus makes things clear to us in terms of how we are to treat those around us and how we are to live as Christians in the world. “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be last of all and the servant of all.” The idea of being a servant may be disagreeable to many of us, if not downright unacceptable. We live in a world where being humble and looking to serve others first is not easy. In ancient China, the wealth and prestige of a person was measured by how many servants he had. Jesus’ point to us is that He measures people not by how many serve them, but how many people they serve. One of the hallmarks of stewardship is service. The four Pillars of Stewardship have been described as: prayer, hospitality, formation and service. It is the fourth one – service -- which Jesus is speaking about in today’s Gospel. Recent research has found that one of the most quoted people of recent time is Blessed Mother Teresa. She often spoke of love and service. One of her better known sayings was the following: “Love cannot remain by itself – it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service.” From The Catholic Steward
