ear Friends,

As many of you know by now, I had the pleasure of attending this year’s Call Service at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, where seminarian Stephen Miller received his first Call to serve as our new Assistant Pastor. Since that very special evening, I’ve also had the pleasure of conveying to him our joy in this new beginning and of hearing his own great sense of joy in becoming a pastor and launching his ministry in our congregation.

Andrew said, “We have found the Messiah.” John 1:41

Our mission is to demonstrate God’s love by caring for all people and helping them to know and follow Jesus.

We are also making arrangements for Steve and his wife Andrea to visit St. Andrew for the first time in early June, after which he will be ordained into the Holy Ministry at his home church in the greater Chicago area at the end of the month. After a time of rest and transition from the rigors of seminary life, the plan at the moment is for the Millers to move to Maryland sometime in August in anticipation of his Installation at St. Andrew in early September. For those of you who missed the specifics, Mr. Miller is a native of Downers Grove, Illinois. He received his bachelor’s degree from Concordia University, Chicago in 2009. During his theological education, Steve’s served a one year internship (vicarage) at Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover, North Carolina, which like St. Andrew, is a member of the Southeastern District of our denomination. He has been consistently described as an outstanding pastoral candidate by his mentors, professors, and peers. The Millers will celebrate their first wedding anniversary in August. Pastors Mordhorst and Carlson join me and the rest of our church staff in looking forward to a new young partner in ministry who will bring a fresh voice, a new set of gifts, a vital generational perspective, and great enthusiasm for the church’s mission for Christ. Let me also say again that as happy as I am for us, I am just has happy for them because I know what a great congregation they’re coming to. So, join me this summer in prayer and preparation for another new beginning at St. Andrew, as God blesses us again with two more gifted servants of Jesus Christ, whose mission goes on for God’s glory and our great joy in Him.

“Rock into Summer” at the Church Picnic – Join St. Andrew members, friends, and Kingdom Rock VBS families for an afternoon of food and fun, Sunday June 23 from 12:30-3:30. All welcome and helpers needed! Details inside. Hope to see you there!!

Announcing the 2013 Diaper Derby! You’ve heard of The Kentucky Derby. You’ve heard of The Preakness. And no one misses The Belmont.…………But now there’s The Diaper Downs at LCSA! Our Church Nursery is in need of some storage shelves and cubbies for the youngest members of our congregation. As a way to raise funds for this project we are planning to hold a DIAPER DERBY!

Join us as we ROCK into Summer! Food & Drinks! Music! Ice Cream!

While we won’t make our real babies crawl in a race (although that would be fun to watch!), we have devised a Diaper Derby that you may all participate in. The “bets” are your contributions toward our Nursery cubbies and shelves. During the entire month of June we will host a Diaper Derby featuring pictures of “babies” with our church staff members’ pictures on them. That’s right! Dollars will count as “bets” on your favorite “baby” staff member. Each week we will watch as staff “babies” pull ahead in our Derby. The results will be on display in the Commons so you can keep track of who’s winning! Everyone who “bets” will receive a Diaper Pin with their favorite “baby’s” name. Wear your pin and we all win!

And . . . Fun! Fun! Fun! Bring your lawn chairs and coolers as we ROCK the Kingdom! A free will offering will be collected to help defray the costs. Picnic Volunteers Needed If you are available to help us staff our picnic on Sunday, June 23, please contact the church office or sign up in The Commons. Student Service Learning Hours will be offered to those students who would like to volunteer.

Needed for 1 hour shifts:

Remember, the “baby” who raises the most funds is our WINNER!

Treasurer’s Corner

TNT   “The Next Transition”  for College Students & Young Adults

Now that we have completed our beautiful new Lower Level, and have finalized the expansion of our parking lot, I wanted to summarize the financial implications and funding for these important projects. We were again blessed at St. Andrew with over 200 families or individuals contributing generously to our Firm Foundations Campaign. As originally described, Firm Foundations was intended to provide funding to complete our Lower Level, expand our parking lot and provide financial support to support the operations of this new space in the first few years. I am very pleased to report that we, as a Church family, met all of the goals described. Here’s a recap of the financial details: Firm Foundations Pledges: FF “Furnishings” Pledges: Seed money from “CTJ”*:

$1,383,440 123,918 471,130

Total Sources of Funds: Cost of LL and Parking: Operations Support:

$1,978,488 ($1,773,806) $ 204,682

Are you transitioning into the “adult world” via college or work? Maneuvering new situations and responsibilities, and wondering how your faith fits in? Come share your challenges and adventures with friends who are on the same path!

OPEN HOUSE

Sunday, June 2 at 12:30pm Lunch & Games!

As of this writing, we have received over 81% of the pledges to Firm Foundations and the giving to this campaign will end next year. I want to sincerely thank each and every one of you for your contributions of time, talent, and your financial resources to St. Andrew. As we have demonstrated many times, with God’s grace, and your sacrificial gifts, not only have we seen tremendous growth in our Church home but, more importantly, we continue to spread God’s word through the good works of our growing ministries

Contact Lindsey at 717-433-2869 or [email protected] for details/directions.

All welcome - bring friends!

As I communicated last year, we closed on our new mortgage in November, and are now enjoying a substantially lower fixed rate of interest on our total $3.5 million loan. We have invested approximately $13.5 million in our “new” Church home, and while a $3.5 million mortgage is substantial, we have proven our ability to meet these obligations and more! Stay tuned to “Treasurer’s Corner” for summary financial information derived from our 2012 audited financial statement, coming this summer! *CTJ = “Continue the Journey” Capital Campaign

Kid Central News

School’s out already and the summertime fun has begun at St. Andrew’s Preschool!

Celebration Sunday! On June 2, the KidCentral classes will be entertained by a wonderful end-of-year celebration, with special lessons about Heroes in the Bible. This will take place in the Great Room, so parents should plan to drop-off children there beginning at 9:20am. We’ll want to have as much time as possible so don’t be late!!!

For many students, the end of the school year has been extended with our Summer Camp, which will run for three weeks. All potty trained children, aged 3-5, are welcome to join the fun. Our camp themes this year are:

“Come to the Bahamas” – May 28-31 “The Preschool Pond” – June 3-7 “Under the Sea” – June 10-14

Summer Sunday School Regular classes conclude on June 9 for the year, with Summer KidCentral beginning the next week (June 16). The kids have had a great year together, starting their worship with Praise Craze and making new friends in all classes! As during the school year, kids will meet in Room 118 to get started. Our summer program is going to be structured differently, however, so kids will also be dismissed from Room 118. Hope to see you there when you’re in town!

Please visit our website for details (www.mystandrew.org). Enrollment continues for the 2013-2014 school year. We offer sessions for 2, 3, and 4 year olds. Classes for the coming school year are already 76% full, so let your friends and neighbors know about our Preschool fast! Word of mouth is our best advertisement!

Summer Volunteers Needed! Because we try to give our regular teachers the summer off, we ask for parents to pitch in and assist for the summer sessions of class. Please visit the sign up table in the Commons to see which Sundays are still open. All materials are provided and there are always two adults per class, so you are never alone! It’s a great opportunity to support the KidCentral program and spend a little time with the Good News of Jesus. Need more information? Contact Deb Stowe or Marianne Lohr at [email protected].

Enjoy the hazy, hot days of summer ... we look forward to seeing you at the start of the 2013-2014 school year! Lia Mai Puskar Preschool Director

Many Thanks!

St. Andrew Member Honored!

Dear Friends, I have worshiped at a wonderful place for 35 years. That place is The Lutheran Church of St. Andrew. It has grown through those years because of the spirit of the members and Pastors who have led us. Recently, I downsized to a smaller home after 58 years at my previous residence. The prospect of a move was overwhelming. I wondered how I would accomplish it with no truck, van, or muscles. I simply prayed and asked Jesus to help me find a way to do it, and began. St. Andrew helpers were not asked to assist me, but they simply heard I needed help and came to work. No pay. Some worked for weeks sorting, packing, boxing, disposing, and finally loading items to display and sell at St. Andrew’s recent Yard Sale. Heartfelt thanks go to Marilee Tollefson, Mary Ann and Kirk Rydland, Carol and Walt Petzold, Ed Stowe, Karen Bohlmann, Anne Harpster, Revonda and Bill Mosher, and Emily Berry.

Long-time St. Andrew member Irma Cuellar was recently honored with the Marie Ferlington Life Service Award for exceptional innovation, dedication, and energy shown on behalf of the Montgomery County District 14 Democratic Club. Irma’s many years of faithful service were recognized with the award and lifetime Honorary Membership in the Club at a dinner on April 26. In addition, later this year Irma’s name will be inscribed on the Civil Rights Foot Soldiers Monument in Annapolis, Maryland. This honor is reserved for those who participated in the 1963 March on Washington, in which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his immortal “I Have a Dream” speech.

I have done nothing to deserve or earn from God the labor and care that was lavished upon me by these and unnamed others. Nothing! You cannot earn God’s gifts. He gives His love to you freely. These people gave because they believe in Jesus and follow Him. Thank God for The Lutheran Church of St. Andrew. The Spirit of God is here.

Our St. Andrew family joins with the community in thanksgiving for Irma’s tireless devotion to these and many other worthwhile causes! Congratulations and blessings, Irma!

With love,

Lynn Wright

I’d like to thank the church for their prayers for Ethel Sawyer during her time in the hospital after the auto accident. She is home now, and we could not have done it without you all. God healed Ethel not just by our faith but by prayers from our Pastor and his angelic team (Riki, Marilee, Pastor Carlson, Leslie) and the voices of our congregation. God does dwell in them! We love you all dearly, and once again our heartfelt thanks to you. Love,

Rose Thomas and family

June is National Safety Month!

Lutheran Mission Society collection of Thrift Shop items is June 23. Homeless folks often suffer from sunburn. In summer, there is a special need for new bottles of sunscreen and unused lip balm. Since these are smaller items that we don’t want to mix with the “thrift shop” items, please put sunscreen and lip balm in the blue box in the coat room marked “LMS” during June.

Volunteers needed at the Clothes Closet – July is our month to help at the Colesville Council of Community Congregations (C-4) Clothes Closet at 14015 New Hampshire Avenue, south of our church just past the ICC. Can you help out on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday mornings from 9am to noon or whatever time you can stay? One day a week for the month of July would be very helpful. The sign-up list will be in the Commons by mid-June. The task is sorting clothes and hanging them with similar items. No experience necessary!

Sweet summertime! Don’t miss out on any fun this season! Stay well by learning strategies on how to keep your heart healthy this summer at Summer Safety, Tuesday, June 4 from 11amnoon at Gaithersburg Senior Center 80 Bureau Dr., Gaithersburg, or Wednesday, June 5 from 10:15-11am at Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring. Included will be tips on hydration, food safety and travel. No registration necessary. For further information, please call 301-896-3939.
