Welcome Letter Twenty years ago an extraordinary group of visionaries created the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole. Since then, we have been linking donors with nonprofit organizations to improve life for all of us. We chose not to have a party this year, but we have never stopped celebrating. We are grateful for the amazing generosity, passion and concern of our donors. They are helping us keep nonprofits healthy so that they, in turn, can sustain our community. At a time when the majority of community foundations are granting less, the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole is providing more discretionary funding than any year in our history through our Competitive Grants Program and our emergency fund, the Economic Response Initiative. We also offer non-profits professional development opportunities and access to new volunteers. While our founders may not have anticipated an economic climate like this one, they did know that community foundations exist to mitigate challenges in times of crisis. They gave us a clear mission for uncertain times–to provide philanthropic leadership when it is needed most. We celebrate them by doing just that.

Katharine Conover, President

ScottieDejanikusandJeanAdams Scottie: Philanthropy was a part of my life from an early age. My father always told my brother, Bud, and me that it was our responsibility to help others in whatever way we could. Our parents reinforced that belief when they created trusts so that each of us would have the opportunity to support causes we cared about. To ensure that my children would have that same opportunity, I made each of them an advisor on their grandparents’ trust as well as the fund I established at the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole. They have passed that value to their children who donate a percentage of their weekly allowance to nonprofits. Giving is a family tradition. Scottie Dejanikus

Jean: With the urging of Suzanne Young, Julie Obering and I started discussing the possibility of a community foundation in Jackson Hole. Local nonprofits were doing great things, and we wanted to help them raise money to accomplish their missions. Many believed we didn’t need a community foundation, but after two years of research, we gathered seven individuals as a board who really believed in the cause. After a while, the organization began attracting donors interested in establishing funds with us, Scottie among them. We worked long and hard to explain how a community foundation operates. Scottie: I joined the board in 1991, and I enjoyed having the opportunity to talk to people about our goals. I had established an endowment fund at the Foundation, and so I was familiar with the organization. It was so important to talk to friends and acquaintances about the advantages of a community foundation and how vital and rewarding philanthropy is. What began as a project in peoples’ houses quickly grew into a well-respected source of nonprofit leadership. Jean: We started as an affiliate of the Wyoming Community Foundation, but by the early 90’s, we knew it was the right time to venture out on our own. Twenty years later, we are so proud of what this organization has become. Most Jackson donors want to see their contributions solving today’s problems. The Community Foundation of Jackson Hole distinguishes itself from many other community foundations with very active non-endowed funds in response to this community value.

Scottie Dejanikus, born in 1920, first came to Jackson in 1936 with her mother and younger brother, Bud. The family stayed at Leeks Marina and explored a relatively new Grand Teton National Park. Through the years, the mountains kept drawing her back, and she moved permanently to Kelly in 1969. She served on the board of the Community Foundation from 1991 through 1996. Scottie passed away in 2009, and her three daughters are now advisors on her donor advised endowment fund. Jean and Sals Adams first visited Jackson in the 1970s to ski and moved here permanently in 1983. As a past member of the Minnesota Council on Foundations, Jean was very familiar with the community foundation model. She and Salisbury were active in the Wyoming Community Foundation, and, along with Julie Obering, founded the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole and served on its board. Jean was also a founding member at the Center for the Arts and served on the board until recently. Salisbury Adams died in 2004, and Jean, a member of the Legacy Society, continues to advise their endowment and donor advised funds at the Community Foundation. Scottie Dejanikus

EconomicResponseInitiative The Community Foundation of Jackson Hole exists for times like these. In an economic crisis the likes of which most of us have never seen, we assessed what the community was facing and developed ways to help. Rather than holding an Anniversary Gala to celebrate 20 years of philanthropic leadership, the Foundation asked that donors instead direct their funding to the Economic Response (ER) Initiative. Over $200,000 was raised in 2009 to support local nonprofits addressing the critical needs of hunger, housing, safety, unemployment, healthcare and emergency financial assistance in Jackson. These grants are available on an ongoing basis, and the Foundation covers all administrative costs associated with the initiative so that 100% of all donations can be distributed to nonprofits.

2009 Competitive Grants Through its Competitive Grants program, the Foundation supports projects with significant local impact. Applications are reviewed twice a year by a diverse committee of community volunteers, and funding for this program is provided by Old Bill’s Fun Run Co-Challengers, private donors and endowed funds held at the Foundation. At a time when many foundations were forced to reduce discretionary funding, the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole granted over $500,000–the largest amount in our history.

Carol Gonnella P

hilanthropy is an incredibly important facet in the lives of my family. Even when they were a very young age, my husband, John, and I urged our children, Ashley and Ian, to be active participants in our giving. Now that they are older, they are advisors with us on our Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, allowing them to participate in family gifting decisions. Establishment of the Gonnella Donor Advised Fund and participation in Old Bill’s Fun Run helped us instill in our children the inherent value of helping others. John and I want to ensure that Ashley and Ian will be able to continue to contribute to their community after our deaths. To fulfill that goal, we created a planned gift–making a charitable contribution to the Gonnella Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation–in our estate planning documents. With this gift, our children will not only enjoy the financial benefits of charitable tax planning, but will also be able to support the causes they care about even after we’re gone. When I discuss estate planning options with my clients, I find that many of them have this same goal for their children. People often express a desire to contribute to their community now and in the future, but they are unsure of the most efficient way to do so. We discuss the pros and cons of giving directly to their organizations of choice, creating a private foundation or establishing a fund at the Community Foundation. The majority of my clients really love the idea of creating their own fund and having the Foundation do all the administrative work. They can, in essence, have their own private foundation without all the complexity and cost, and their family can still be very involved in the decision making and be a big part of the philanthropy they want to pursue. When I bring my clients to the Community Foundation, I know that the Foundation will work to create the best plan for them. We can sit down and discuss what their passions are, when and how long they want to support those causes and how involved they want to be right now. Based on the answers to these questions, we determine the best giving vehicle for my client, whether familiar and straightforward or custom and complex. The Community Foundation has changed Jackson dramatically. Through leadership, the Foundation has empowered us to give back and has taught us that being a philanthropist is important and possible, regardless of one’s net worth.

Carol Gonnella has lived and practiced law in Jackson for 30 years. She is the founding partner of Gonnella & Majors, PC, a law firm dedicated to assisting clients with their estate and business planning needs. She served on the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors for nine years in addition to sitting on the Boards of several other charitable organizations. She and her husband, John, hold the Gonnella Donor Advised fund with the Foundation and are members of its Legacy Society. In addition to being a published author, she has held teaching positions at Michigan State University’s Academy of Multidisciplinary Practice, the EP Institute’s Advanced Studies Program, and Wealth Council, an educational company for estate planning attorneys.

Bringing people together through philanthropic leadership to improve the quality of life in Teton Valley As we enter our third full year of operations, we want to remember the many donors and volunteers who have contributed to our success. The 2nd Annual Tin Cup Challenge proved there is a tremendous amount of support for this collaborative event–both in terms of celebrating together and actually putting dollars into the hands of nonprofits so they can continue to do the critical work for our community. We are grateful to the 900+ individuals and families who have collectively contributed almost $1.8 million in just two years and look forward to building on this proven formula of community-wide fundraising. With a strong Tin Cup track record to date, we enter this year intent on raising awareness of the breadth of services we offer. Our work to improve the quality of life in Teton Valley goes beyond the Tin Cup. From grant making to nonprofit programs to charitable solutions for donors, we are working to be the philanthropic leader in the Teton Valley.
