OUR COMMON FUTURE INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE CULTURE

Miskolc? No question! In this booklet we present this developing Northern Hungarian city by providing a colourful selection of convincing, authentic and open facts. Let the most important facts speak about our city instead of us:

 About 300,000 inhabitants, including the agglomeration,  Continuous supply of able and well trained employees is ensured at competitive cost,  Very low employee fluctuation rate 10%;          

West Hungary >7%, Excellent infrastructure: motorway, public transportation, renewable energy supply, information communication network, Optimal location for reaching Western and Eastern European markets Thanks to the high level dual vocational training system, continuous supply of able and well trained employees is ensured, 4,200 students of engineering at the University of Miskolc, Well established database about suppliers having excellent understanding of metals, Rich industrial past and technical culture, Beauty of the natural environment, A city offering colourful and diverse cultural, sports and recreational opportunities, Availability of highest support intensity for investments in the country and the region, Professional and effective investment incentives and support system ensured by the city and Miskolc Holding Zrt.

And more... The three unities of the city - industry, knowledge and culture - provide a demonstration of the progress of Miskolc built upon traditions and experiences acquired, complying with today’s challenges in every respect and creating innovative added value. The stable economic conditions, the available qualified workforce, and cooperation relying upon the knowledge base of the University of Miskolc and the research institutes, and implemented in all areas of the economy all provide assistance to the city’s leadership in the realisation of their plans. In this process, a key role is played by the settlement of domestic and international investors, and by the fact that in 2013 Miskolc and its region were declared a priority development centre by the Hungarian Government.

Joint effort to further develop Miskolc In Miskolc, a city designated in 2013 a a priority development centre, there were development funds amounting to approx. HUF 92 billion used in the past four and a half years. Also, thanks to the Modern Cities programme supported by the Government, additional development funds of HUF 180 billion will be provided to the city. The job creating and community aimed developments are proof of the revival of our city. They demonstrate the image of a competitive, developing city that is worth investing in, because those projects offer value for money. The results of our job creating endeavours, and support schemes providing incentives for investment are apparent. The once one-sided economy focusing on heavy industry has become varied, and in addition to classical industrial production new technologies are now established in our city. The Japanese company Takata built a plant at the Miskolc Southern Industrial Park where they manufacture air-bags and Dr. Ákos Kriza car safety devices. Companies with interests in car electronics Mayor of Miskolc City also carry out developments, Bosch, Patec and Shinwa are all with County Rights extending their number of staff on a continuous basis, the latter one has just opened another plant hall. The largest logistics company of the region, Waberer’s-Szemerey, established its regional centre in Miskolc. The launch of new technologies and new industrial plants required an educational culture of a different perspective to be created, which both vocational training and the professionals’ training programmes offered by the University of Miskolc were aligned to. As a result of educational-training cooperations concluded with companies, the supply of professionals and a background basis for development for large corporations is provided for. Miskolc was the first among Hungarian cities to join the Green City initiative. We aim to have all investments and development projects planned and implemented so that they would comply with the basic principles of a Green City, which initiative is also supported by private capital. The core idea of this is sustainability, minimum carbon footprint, and the creation of the greatest possible consistency with nature. In Miskolc, 47% of district heating services are now provided from renewable energy sources, based on geothermal heating,

thus saving 20 million cubic metres of natural gas at annual level. This involves about 30,000 flats, 900 public utility consumers, the Takata plants at the Southern Industrial Park, and the open-air bath in Miskolctapolca, recently reopened, which also obtained the accreditation of Green City. As a result of tourism and our festivals – the Opera Festival, Beer Festival, Cinefest International Film Festival, and our Jelly Carnival –, cultural and gastro-tourism has become a leading economic sector of Miskolc. We have invested billions in the development of tourism in the past couple of years – with success. Among the investment projects, the most important ones was the cultural and eco-touristic development of the city districts of Diósgyőr and Lillafüred, realised using funds of over HUF 3 billion. The Lillafüred hanging gardens were refurbished, Diósgyőr Castle regained its past beauty, and next to it a new cultural venue of our city was built: the Square of Jousts. A great development programme determining the life of the entire city for decades has been started and is in progress in Miskolc. The inhabitants of Miskolc like their city again, they take ownership of their city and participate in its development. The investments, refurbishment projects, festivals and cultural and even sports events are all part of this process. The urban development strategy created as a result of consultations and shared thinking, and the development programmes laid down within the scope thereof all make the city more attractive also to investors. Miskolc is ready to welcome them, so that we would assist each other in achieving success in view of mutual advantages. Please come and visit Miskolc!

In the heart of Europe  Miskolc, a city located in the direct attraction zone of three countries, and thus of a favourable geographic location, is the administrative, economic, scientific, educational, cultural and touristic centre of the North-Hungarian region.  Miskolc can be reached from Budapest on the M3–M30 motorway in 1 hour and 30 minutes. By hourly InterCity service, convenient railway transport is also provided, from large cities of Europe or other Hungarian cities. In addition to the services offered by Liszt Ferenc International Airport in Budapest, the international airports of Debrecen and Kosice are at an hour’s distance.  As a result of Miskolc’s favourable location, the city may serve as the gate to the East and the West in the heart of Europe.

Miskolc our common future Miskolc, the former “Steel City”, has been completely transformed by the mid-2010s. With our industrial traditions maintained, using the most up-to-date technologies, and by aligning educational levels and training opportunities to the working culture of investors using high technology, the city has developed into a place to live, and a safe investment centre relying upon companies generating high added value, providing a complete future. In the past couple of years, several world class production companies have emerged in the industrial parks of the city who are suppliers of the most well-known makes of vehicles. A definite objective of the leadership of Miskolc city – and of the local leaders of education and the economy – is to attract a production company or companies well-known in the car industry to settle in Miskolc, in a properly prepared industrial area of 1,000 hectares. A wide-scope social collaboration as to city development, the keeping of qualified workforce and the development of their level of qualification, and the projects implemented and in progress, or in the phase of planning, all serve the purpose of the implementation thereof.

OUR COMMON FUTURE: MISKOLC

For the Hungarian and foreign professionals and managers moving to Miskolc, our city offers a beautiful natural environment, safety, proper living conditions, sports and recreation opportunities, and foreign language education for children and youngsters accompanying the experts, from kindergarten to university. We also offer youthful, future based and stable employment. Be a part of Miskolc’s future, let this be our common future!

Industrial parks: full comfort for investors Currently Miskolc has two industrial parks operated and developed by the companies of the local government. As a result of continued development, the area of the Miskolc Industrial Park has by now reached 224 hectares and is now practically fully occupied. The 93.5 hectare area of the Miskolc Southern Industrial Park is located at the southern boundary of Miskolc, next to the access road of the M30 motorway, where the global company Takata has established its plant. In addition to their strategic location and modern infrastructure, the two industrial parks offer complex business services that can be tailored to the individual needs of companies, and that provide a sound background for the stable operation of those enterprises and the implementation of their ideas – and they are also exemplary from the aspect of the city’s economic development.

Due to the extensive utilisation of the two industrial parks, for the additional economic development of Miskolc and its region it is absolutely necessary to designate an industrial area that is larger than the current ones, which would aim to directly influence the competitiveness of the city, the region and of Hungary by being able to win a new production industrial major project resulting in the employment of even several thousand persons. Dr. Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary, conducted talks in Miskolc with the city’s leadership on 21 April 2015, within the scope of the Modern Cities Programme, where the Hungarian Government and the Municipality of Miskolc City with County Rights signed a cooperation agreement that among others includes the establishment and development of a new 1,000 hectare industrial park.

Takata: record investment in record time Takata Safety Systems Hungary Kft., the producer of automotive safety systems, started its operation in October 2014 at its new plant located at the Miskolc Southern Industrial Park. The company group’s investment in the new plant amounted to 68.3 M EUR, where the company built an installed system of halls of 60,000 sqm, in an area of 25 hectares. The plant in Miskolc is a reference in the life of the TAKATA Group not only in Europe, but also in other parts of the world. Takata Corporation is a leading supplier of automotive safety systems worldwide, its products include steering wheels, airbags, seatbelts, electronics products as well as child safety systems, which are supplied to the biggest car manufacturers. The mission of TAKATA is the development of innovative products according to highest quality standards. The plant in Miskolc already has more than 500 employees who are committed to turning innovative ideas into reality.

NOHAC: automotive suppliers together By now, Central Eastern Europe has become the centre of the automotive industry, practically every significant European and Far Eastern manufacturer is present in the region. It is in our interest that automotive parts arrive from local or nearby suppliers, meaning that the companies of the region – hence the member companies of the North Hungarian Automotive Cluster (NOHAC) as well – have good chances to obtain a supplier position or to strengthen their existing ones. NOHAC was established with the participation of three leading suppliers, as well as the BOKIK [Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Chamber of Commerce and Industry] and the University of Miskolc at the end of 2006. Nowadays, the cluster still operates with active support from the Chamber. The aim of NOHAC is to improve the competitiveness, innovation and profitability of North Hungarian automotive suppliers through their partnership. By this the cluster brings its members closer to the European automotive sector and the European automotive industry to its future partners. Following its establishment, several companies joined the cluster comprising over 70 members today. Most of them are metal and plastic processing enterprises, but design offices and companies offering certification and other services are also represented. The aggregate number of employees of the member companies exceeds 11,600 and their aggregate revenue amounts to approx. HUF 450 billion. NOHAC was awarded the title “Accredited Innovation Cluster” in December 2014, which is a great recommendation for future funds for the cluster and its member companies, too.

This is also Miskolc The diversity of this vibrant big city arises from its beautiful built and natural environment. Miskolc is a special city of Europe, inviting us at all times to adventures, where the wonders of nature promise many experiences, which also provides tranquillity and a home if required. In the past couple of years, the city has undergone a dynamic development both in the field of culture and tourism. By the reconstruction of Diósgyőr Castle, Miskolc has gained a special sight, as the Castle of King Louis the Great was rebuilt in its original splendour, unique even in Central Europe. The Pannonian Sea Museum has 7 million years old bald-cypresses on display in an interactive environment. The local university, steel production, metallurgical history and paper production all have their own museums in Miskolc. At the heart of the city, among the monuments, also modern forms of art may be found. The intimate atmosphere is further enhanced by the “river” of Miskolc, the Szinva creek, with promenade squares having rock gardens and floodlights in its vicinity. Near the heart of the city we may encounter a unique attraction: in the northern side of the Avas hill there are over 900 cellars and wineries located, many of which have been witnessing the vibrant life of the city below them for as many as 300-400 years. This vibrant life is characterised by festivals, such as the Jelly Carnival, the ‘Bartók+” International Opera Festival, the Jameson CineFest International Film Festival or the Beer Festival. Several hundred thousand visitors coming to Miskolc are proof of these festivals and uninterrupted developments. Those seeking relaxation and the wonders of nature do not need to leave Miskolc either: the boundary of the Bükk National Park runs across the city. There is a wildly romantic path leading up to Miskolc-Lillafüred, through the largest small railway viaduct of the country. Another famous hiking location and resort area of Miskolc is Miskolctapolca. The Cave Bath is the major touristic attraction of the city, a natural formation unique even in Europe. The system of caves with crystal clear microclimate is supplied by 28–34 °C water from the karst region of the Bükk hills. In addition thereto, the only Green City accredited open-air bath in Europe, recently refurbished, also awaits water sports fans, by also offering wellness services. The most well-known figure of 20th century Hungarian realist prose literature, Zsigmond Móricz referred to Miskolc as the Hungarian city with the greatest potential, and he wrote: “If you stop above Miskolc, ... and look around over the beautiful landscape, you will see one of the most splendid panoramas... There will be a fairy garden built here very soon.”
