Graduation Ceremonies

Some of you have not had a Senior recently (or ever) and may be only just beginning to remember or realize how quickly this time between May 1 and graduation can pass. With this in mind, we want to give out some information that you will find helpful in the near future. Commencement exercises for our graduates takes place in the competition gymnasium at the high school on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. Mr. Sutter likes to keep this ceremony to an hour so that graduates have more time to spend with their famillies. Seating for this event is usually at a premium so we attempt each year to notify students, parents and guardians of the ticket policy that is followed. Seating in the gym is estimated at 2,000 for athletic events. We also have seating on the floor for approximately 375 family members and friends with a stage area and seating for the graduates filling the remainder of the floor area. Overflow seating is available in the commons area and Hevelone Center, where a closed circuit big screen monitor is set up. Each graduating senior will be issued eight reserved seating tickets. Two of these tickets will be an alternate color which will allow those individuals to sit on the floor in chairs. The remaining six tickets will allow individuals early reserved seating in the bleacher sections. Doors for reserved seating will be open from 2:00-2:30 p.m. After this time, all tickets are void and everyone will be allowed to enter the gym for general seating. A baccalaureate service will be held in the Hevelone Center on Wednesday, May 12. This event is sponsored by the Beatrice Ministerial Alliance and will begin at 8:00 p.m. All graduates are encouraged to attend and participate in both programs.

In honor of National Foster Care Month in May, KVC Behavioral HealthCare, Inc. (KVC) is coordinating Dine Out for Foster Children. Participating restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds from Thursday, May 6, 2010, to support children in KVC foster care. KVC is a not-for-profit organization providing services to children at risk for abuse and/or neglect, children with mental or behavioral health challenges and children involved in the juvenile justice system, and their families. KVC currently serves nearly 2,000 children in eastern and southeastern Nebraska, and approximately 60% of these children are in foster care. When you dine at a participating Dine Out for Foster Children restaurant on Thursday, May 6th, you will help these children in crisis. Children often enter foster care with very few personal possessions; many lack adequate shoes, clothing or other necessities. Making a difference has never been easier. When you dine at a participating restaurant on Thursday, May 6th, you help to cover the costs of things like coats, shoes, personal care items, basic infant care items, and transportation support for family visitations. To date, the following Beatrice restaurants have committed to participating in Dine Out for Foster Children: Classics, Valentino‘s, West Court Dairy Queen. Contact Tami Soper at (402) 742-8802, or [email protected], or visit our website at www.kvc.org to learn more or to sign up a restaurant. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 51.6 percent of Americans age 12 and older had used alcohol at least once in the 30 days prior to being surveyed; 23.3 percent had binged (5+ drinks within 2 hours); and 23.3 percent reported drinking heavily (5+ drinks on 5+ occasions). In the 12-17 age range, 14.6 percent had consumed at least one drink in the 30 days prior to being surveyed; 8.8 percent had binged; and 2 percent drank heavily. Many coalitions throughout the country are hosting town hall meetings in April to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol abuse and underage drinking. Gage County will be hosting the town hall meeting in June, 2010—watch for more details on the website or in future newsletters. Also watch for information on Responsible Beverage Server Training and High-Visibility Checkpoints. April and May are busy months with proms and graduations. Please be aware that adults who host an underage drinking party, or provide or sell alcohol to a minor, can be held civilly liable if the intoxicated minor injures or kills someone. That’s right. You could lose your shirt, your house, your business. There really is no free ride if you provide. Under Nebraska criminal law, you can spend up to a year in jail, receive a $1,000 fine or both if you provide alcohol to a minor. Recent sentences ranged from two months to a year in jail. Sometimes there is a free ride… to jail. Underage drinking. Adult consequences.

Notes from the

GOING TO SUMMER CAMPS - Does your student/athlete need a copy of their physical for any summer camps? If so, please have them visit Nurse Kunc to request a copy prior to the end of the school year. Nurse Kunc will not be onduty to run copies for you after school is dismissed. MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL- Any student that has brought medication(s) to the nurse’s office to be stored and locked up will be sent a reminder prior to their LAST day of school to stop by and pick them up in any afternoon BEFORE 3:00 p.m. If the parents wish to pick up the medication that is fine, they may come at any time during the school day, it just needs to be prior to 3:00 p.m. ALL MEDICATIONS NOT RETRIEVED BY NOON ON 5/19/10 WILL BE DESTROYED, as we cannot store them over the summer. PHYSICALS INFORMATION- We will use forms, straight off the NSAA website: nsaahome.org/ administraton forms. In the top right-hand corner, 1-says CLEARANCE FORM, 1-says HISTORY FORM, 1-says PHYSICAL EXAMINATION FORM; at the bottom of the history form there is one light and one dark black box, the light box is for the student to sign and the dark black box is VERY important for the parent/guardian to sign, because this will allow the doctor’s office to release the answers to the medical history questions and the results of the actual physical examination to the school so that we can better serve you, by having record of past or previous findings.

SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT BANQUET 2010 The fifty-second annual Scholastic Achievement Banquet hosted by the Student Council and the Board of Education will be held Saturday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. Those who plan to eat dinner have already made those reservations (no tickets are sold at the door), but everyone is welcome to attend the 7:30 p.m. awards ceremony in the Hevelone Center. There will be music for our enjoyment at that time, followed by presentation of awards for those students who have been on the honor roll every quarter this year, scholarship recipients, and the National Honor Society induction ceremony. The evening usually concludes about 9 p.m. We welcome and encourage your presence. If your son/daughter receives notice of a scholarship after the Scholastic Achievement Banquet, please continue to bring in written copies of those notices, because the complete enhanced scholarship section will be reprinted in the graduation program. Science Club Zoo Trip

Forty-nine science club students traveled to the Henry Doorly Zoo on March 15th for an overnight stay. This is paid for in part by a grant from Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of Nebraska. The students raise the rest of the money through science club fundraisers. While at the zoo, the students took a guided night tour behind the scenes at the zoo learning about how the exhibits were made, the care of the animals, and about the historical development of the zoo exhibits. Pizza was enjoyed by all. The guides then posed some scenarios such as if you were lost on a deserted island, what would be the most important supplies to have with you. Students watched a movie and then settled down for what was left of the night. Early morning wake-up call was at 6 a.m. Students took another short tour and then were able to explore the zoo for the rest of the day. Comments from members of the group were: “I look forward to this trip as the highlight of the year!” “Absolutely, incredibly awesome.” “This was a great day, even if it was freezing cold.”

2010 Nebraska Junior Academy of Science (NJAS) Two students from the BHS Special Topics in Research Class, Ross Jensby and Hillary Fischer, presented their research at the 2010 Nebraska Junior Academy of Science state competition on Friday, April 23rd. In addition, she received the Mu Alpha Theta Award for “the most challenging, original, thorough and creative investigation of a problem involving mathematics accessible to a high school student.” Hillary’s project was entitled, “Secrets of the Willow” and she investigated the use of willow “water” made from steeped twigs as a natural rooting hormone. Ross investigated the antibacterial properties of honey in his project called, “Honey’s Sweet Secret.” Both students qualified for state by earning a gold medal at the regional competition held March 6th at Doane College in Crete.

Greater Nebraska Science & Engineering Fair Three members of the Special Topics in Research class, Hillary Fischer, Lindsey Schlake, and Stephan Lagree competed in the Greater Nebraska Science and Engineering Fair in Nebraska City on Saturday, March 27th. Hillary earned a gold medal for the best botany project in the senior division with her project entitled, “Secrets of the Willow,” attempting to make her own natural rooting compound from willow twigs. Lindsey’s project, “Cower in the Shower,” compared the bacteria found in rural water showerheads with bacteria found in city showerheads. She received a silver medal for second place in the microbiology category. Stephan’s project, “Deadly Beats,” investigated the effect of different types of music on the life span of crickets.
