A Message from the Chancellor

Copyright: Press Association

Greg Dyke began his career as a newspaper journalist after leaving Hayes Grammar School in 1965. He later took a degree in Politics at the University of York, graduating in 1974.

I

hope you have really enjoyed your time at York and that you have benefited both personally and academically from being here. I also hope you have made enduring friendships and that you leave with many happy memories of university life. That was certainly true for me – I still look back on my time here in the 1970s not only as some of the most exciting and stimulating years of my life but also as a turning point. As the years have passed my abiding belief in the transformative power of education has grown stronger and stronger. I believe passionately that anyone, regardless of background, who can benefit from a York education should be able to do so. The world is facing greater challenges than ever before and needs clever, inspiring and entrepreneurial leaders who want to be a force for good. These characteristics are, I believe, the essence of a York graduate and they will stand you in good stead whatever career you choose to follow. As a York graduate you will always be a member of this University. Long after you have left, the memories of your university life in York will remain because a relationship has been established which we hope will be permanent. The University has focused much of its alumni activity in recent years in creating powerful professional networks between former students both young and old. As a result, wherever you go in the world you are likely to find a York graduate so I urge you to stay in touch and be an active participant in our global community. I have been Chancellor at the University of York for the past eleven years and this year I am stepping down. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the University for their support, their enthusiasm and their friendship over those eleven years. Greg Dyke

In 1977 he joined London Weekend Television as a researcher which was the beginning of his long career in television. Ten years later, after experience at TV-am and TVS (Television South), he returned to LWT as Director of Programmes and in 1991 became Group Chief Executive. In 1994 Greg Dyke left the company and founded Pearson Television which became the largest non-US independent production company in the world. In 2000 Greg Dyke became DirectorGeneral of the BBC and in his four years there he started four new digital television stations and five new digital radio stations, opened two new BBC regions, launched the BBC’s first interactive television services and led the team which created Freeview. He left the BBC in January 2004 in controversial circumstances following the report of the Hutton Inquiry. His autobiography, Greg Dyke: Inside Story, was published in the same year. Greg Dyke is a Fellow of the Royal Television Society and Chair of the British Film Institute. In November 2009 he became Executive Chairman of ATG, Britain’s biggest theatre group. Football has also played a big part in his life. A former Director of Manchester United, Greg Dyke was Chairman of Brentford Football Club for seven years until in July 2013 he became Chairman of the Football Association. Greg Dyke has always maintained a close relationship with the University of York and was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of the University in 1999. He became Chancellor of the University in 2004.

C

ongratulations on your graduation; it is an important milestone and one you should be enormously proud of. We are delighted to welcome you into the University of York’s alumni family.

As you graduate today, I hope you will look back on your time at York with good memories. You are graduating from one of the best universities in the world. We have very high standards and our courses challenge all our students. The award of your degree shows just how much you have devoted your talents and your best efforts to your studies. We are a young university (just over 50 years old), and the principles that shaped our formation continue to be important to us. We believe that anyone who can benefit from a York education should be able to do so. We believe that our teaching must be outstanding and informed by world-class research. We are unconditionally committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and we believe our teaching and research should be used to the benefit of people and societies worldwide. No matter where your future may lie, I hope that you will help us share and defend our belief in the value of excellence, service to society and opportunity for all. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Chancellor Greg Dyke who is stepping down from the post after eleven years. As a former student of this University, Greg Dyke is an inspirational figure who has brought a wealth of experience, energy, humanity – and humour – to this crucial role. His legacy will live on in Vanbrugh Piazza where exciting redevelopment plans are taking shape, with his generous financial support and creative input. There will be opportunities for formal farewells at a later date, but today, on behalf of our graduating students, I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to one of our most enthusiastic supporters who, I hope, will continue his association with the University.

Professor Lamberts has a track record of experimental research into cognitive processes in perception, memory and decision-making, and of mathematical and computational modelling of these processes. He has collaborated with commercial and industrial partners in applied research focused on consumer behaviour and product design. Professor Lamberts is a recipient of the British Psychological Society’s Cognitive Award (1996) and of the Experimental Psychology Society Prize (1997).

Graduation ceremonies 15, 16, 17 and 18 July 2015 The Vice-Chancellor

As we bid farewell to Greg Dyke, we welcome Professor Sir Malcolm Grant who formally takes over as Chancellor from 1 August 2015. As a hugely influential figure in Higher Education, Sir Malcolm is well placed to enrich the life of the University and represent us with distinction in the UK and internationally. He brings a wealth of experience gained at the top of some of the UK’s most high-profile public and academic institutions. The current chair of NHS England, Sir Malcolm served for ten years as President and Provost of UCL and is a former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. He is a past chairman of both the Russell Group and the Local Government Commission for England. York is set to benefit greatly from his insight and extensive experience. I very much look forward to working with Sir Malcolm as we shape York’s continuing development as one of the country’s leading higher education institutions. I wish you all great success in your future and I hope you will always feel part of the wider University of York alumni community. Professor Koen Lamberts

Graduation ceremonies 15, 16, 17 and 18 July 2015 The Honorary Graduands

The Honorary Graduands Every year the University of York confers the honorary degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa on distinguished people. The recipients come from many walks of life and all have made a significant contribution to society. Honorary graduands are selected from nominations by members of the University and very often have links with departments or alumni.

Professor Wolfgang Schmidt Professor Wolfgang Schmidt has been a world expert in number theory for over 50 years. He has made monumental contributions to areas such as the geometry of numbers, normality of numbers and the theory of uniform distribution. Professor Schmidt is one of only two mathematicians to have been awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art and is one of only three mathematicians who have been invited to address the International Congress of Mathematicians on three occasions. The Schmidt Subspace Theorem and the axiomatic formulation of Schmidt Games are examples of his creativity and vision that are still influencing current research. He received the Cole Prize of the American Mathematical Society in 1972, the Humboldt Prize in 1986 and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the Polish Academy of Science and a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. Professor Schmidt studied mathematics at the University of Vienna, where he received his PhD in 1955. Since 1960, he has held a chair in Mathematics at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he is now Professor Emeritus.

Dr David Braben Dr David Braben is a leading figure in the UK computer games industry. A radical innovator in game design, he co-wrote Elite, whose sprawling open-world game-play and classic science-fiction setting made it a cult hit in the 1980s. It helped to create the UK games industry, which now has an annual turnover of £3 billion. Educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, David Braben is a Fellow of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He is CEO of Frontier Developments and sits on the BAFTA Games Board. He also chairs the Government Skillset board for approval of University courses. In May 2011, David Braben announced a new prototype computer, Raspberry Pi, mounted on a printed-circuit board not much bigger than a credit card, and intended to stimulate the teaching of basic computer science in schools. Since then, more than 5,000,000 Raspberry Pis have been sold. The initiative came from the Raspberry Pi Foundation. The charity, of which David Braben is a trustee, aims to promote the study of computer science and to put the fun back into learning computing.

The Graduands July 2015

“I remember so distinctly the drive up to York three years ago as a timid fresher, packed into the car with all my stuff. I quickly learnt that I had little to worry about. The College was fantastic, my Department was hugely welcoming and the number of societies and sports clubs seemed endless. What is so great about York is the sense of community you feel from day one. It is a quality many universities lack, and is the thing I will miss most about my time here.” Ben Leatham, President of the Students’ Union

Graduation ceremonies 15, 16, 17 and 18 July 2015 Profile of the University of York

Profile of the University of York A world-class university

For more than five decades the University of York has set its moral and intellectual compass by an unswerving commitment to excellence in teaching and research – and it is this commitment that continues to guide the University as we extend our horizons to the future. There are more than 30,000 universities in the world and most of the world’s leading universities are hundreds of years old. Since 1963 the University of York has powered its way to a consistently high ranking in the UK and has achieved a leading position internationally. That York has achieved so much in such a relatively short space of time is testament to the founding principles of advancement for all anchored by the highest standards of academic excellence. Since the millennium our determination to foster excellence has resulted in a raft of accolades, including twice winning University of the Year and joining the Russell Group as well as being placed 14th in the UK for research quality, and tenth for the impact of our research in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. Above all, our principles of excellence and equality are seen in the achievements of our students and staff – not just in the delivery of our curricula but in the many and diverse ways they contribute to our city, our region, national policy and international research. The University of York makes an enormous impact, and we are immensely proud of the difference our staff, students, and our 100,000 alumni make in almost every walk of life, in almost every country in the world. From small beginnings, with just 230 students based in the King’s Manor in York city centre, we are now home to more than 16,000 students from 120 countries spread across nine colleges.

Building for the future

The University’s £750m campus investment represents the largest capital development in UK Higher Education to date and provides new student accommodation, world-class research and teaching facilities, plus space for fledgling businesses. The University has also invested £20m in expanding the Library facilities and a further £12m in creating York Sport Village, revamping existing sports facilities and creating a 1km cycle track and the only outdoor velodrome in North Yorkshire. As we grow, we continue to enhance the student experience at York. We have reinvigorated the college system to provide smaller, more focused interdisciplinary communities with communal social areas. We are also developing integrated and comprehensive programmes to support students’ career aspirations by developing internships, volunteering, international study and personal development opportunities. Our vision for the future sets a clear manifesto for the future direction of the University of York. Our new University Strategy sets out three clear aims: to be a world leader in research; to offer outstanding teaching and learning; and to offer all our students an outstanding and valuable experience. We will achieve this through the following enabling objectives: to be sufficiently large to be excellent, resilient and financially sustainable; to be organised in the most efficient and effective way; and to work effectively with other organisations and stakeholders.

World-class research

The University of York has an excellent research reputation established by our community of creative scholars. Many of our Departments and Centres are known internationally for their research activity. We are committed to strengthening our position as one of the world’s premier institutions for inspirational and life-changing research.

York’s reputation for research excellence is founded on both the strength of our academic inquiry, and our passion to translate what we discover into real world impact. The seven pillars of our new research strategy, published in January 2015, align these research strengths with the grand challenges of our time for maximum impact: Creativity Creativity is a key driver of modern, dynamic societies. York’s research ranges from the molecular and cellular workings of the brain, through to the linguistic, cultural, aesthetic and cognitive dimensions of what it is to be creative. Culture and communication From prehistory to the digital age, York’s researchers are exploring the deep roots of culture, communication and social identity, shedding light on the past and forging predictive models for the future. Environmental resilience and sustainability Whether it is food scarcity and energy security, or climate change and pollution, York’s research is providing the evidence base for policy-makers to shape a more sustainable approach to economic growth and development. Health and wellbeing York’s global reputation in medicine, health science and economics is built on research excellence that begins with the fundamental understanding of health and disease, and progresses to evidence-based decision-making about healthcare policies and therapies. Justice and equality Fairness, inclusivity, equality and welfare are fields where York’s research sets the political agenda. These themes also define our values

Graduation ceremonies 15, 16, 17 and 18 July 2015 Profile of the University of York

and approach to meeting the grand social challenges of our time at national and international level. Risk, evidence and decision-making In an increasingly risk-averse world, York’s research is penetrating deep into how decisions on risk are made, how they are managed and monitored, and how technology and social science can reduce risk – from traffic accidents to terrorist incidents. Technologies for the future York’s researchers are developing novel technologies, processes and materials with the potential to transform the economic, environmental and social landscape. From precision plasma manufacturing, to plants that can devour toxins, fundamental research is being translated into real-world solutions.

Public engagement

We are committed to demonstrating the value of our research to communities beyond the academic environment. We do this through collaboration with diverse organisations including the Wellcome Trust, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the seven UK Research Councils, the British Council, the British Museum, the British Library, the V&A, Tate Modern, York Minster, the National Centre for Early Music, York Museums Trust, the British Film Institute and many more. The development of our ‘open campus’ ethos includes hundreds of concerts, free public lectures and sports courses for children and the York Festival of Ideas. The Festival, led by the University in partnership with city and national partners, seeks to position York as a vibrant, dynamic city where ideas and innovation thrive. The 2015 Festival, held between 5 and 21 June, hosted more than 168 events in partnership with more than 45 national and city partners including Channel 4, Classic FM, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, York Minster, the V&A, the National Gallery, Centre for Chronic Diseases and Disorders, the World Meat-Free Day Campaign and many more. It attracted

large audiences from the region and beyond. The University hosts the National Science Learning Centre and the National STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Centre. The Borthwick Institute for Archives, part of the University of York Library, is one of the biggest archive repositories outside London. During its 50-year history, the Borthwick has collected archives from all around the world, from the 12th century to the present day. The Centre for Lifelong Learning provides thought-provoking and inspiring adult education courses to hundreds of people every year, and staff and students bring their skills to the local and wider community through the Community and Volunteering Unit.

Recognition

The University’s strategic focus on developing world-class excellence is evidenced by a range of awards and performance measures including: • the UK 2014 Research Excellence Framework which ranked the University 14th in the UK for research quality, and tenth for the impact of its research

Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Professor Deborah Smith, at the launch of the University’s Research Strategy: www.york.ac.uk/research/strategy

• five Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Further and Higher Education

the University formed the UK’s first Science City initiative, generating nearly 3,000 jobs and around 100 businesses. Our Science Park has also been highly successful in attracting and incubating companies, with its thriving Innovation, Biocentre and IT centres. The University plays a key role in working with the city to develop its economic strategy, attract inward investment, and enhance York’s reputation around the world.

• 12 Athena SWAN awards (including two Gold Awards) and one of the three first Institute of Physics’ Juno Practitioner awards for supporting women in science • the University’s invitation in 2012 to join the Russell Group.

Enterprise

The University encourages departments to find new opportunities in research partnerships, spin-out companies and intellectual property licensing. Our Knowledge Transfer Programmes find placements for York’s high-quality students in businesses, fostering entrepreneurship and hastening the transition of the old industrial economy of the city of York to one based on knowledge and enterprise. Working with the City of York Council,

We are proud that we have remained true to our founding principles of providing high-quality research and teaching across a wide range of academic disciplines. Our goal is to equip our students not only with a first-class education but with attributes to make them inspirational leaders in their chosen fields. It is our graduates who will rise to the challenges of the future and help guide the world towards new horizons.

The University of York’s Coat of Arms comprises an azure shield, with an ermine chevron containing three books. The books signify learning, and more particularly, the three major divisions of learning found at York – arts, sciences and social sciences. Above the shield is a closed helmet with azure and gold decorations, surmounted by a masonry crest representing the walls of York. On this, the crossed keys of St Peter symbolise the Archdiocese of York, while the white rose symbolises the three ridings of Yorkshire. The Latin motto on the scroll reads In limine sapientiae – ‘At the threshold of wisdom’. The four-foot silver mace carried by the Mace Bearer was a gift from the University of Oxford in 1965 and is a replica of Oxford’s Beadle’s Stave.

Graduation ceremonies 15, 16, 17 and 18 July 2015 The Colleges

The Colleges York is one of a handful of UK universities with a collegiate system. Our nine colleges are a focus for our student community past and present. Colleges promote learning and development through student-led activities and peer support, as well as providing community and friendship. Students remain a part of their college throughout their time at York and beyond. Many friendships forged in college last a lifetime. Alumni enrich college life through engaging with current students and supporting projects to enhance the student experience. While all our colleges offer a great experience, they each have their own distinctive identity, atmosphere, facilities and history.

Alcuin promotes enterprise and celebrates a spirit of adventure and innovation. It is named after Alcuin of York (735–804), an English scholar who was headmaster of the cathedral school in York and adviser to Charlemagne. Constantine, the University’s newest college, promotes engagement with the local community and encourages students to become entrepreneurial and independent. The College is named after Constantine the Great who was proclaimed Emperor of Rome in York in 306. Derwent is famed for its social and cultural events including the Club Ds and regular ceilidhs, and its strong sporting culture. It is named after the local River Derwent, which rises in the North York Moors and courses through the Vale of York. Goodricke is a pioneering college which promotes inclusivity of opportunity for its members who comprise a mix of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The College takes its name from John Goodricke, a York astronomer who discovered the first double star Algol. Halifax is our largest college. It promotes active living and sport, creativity and leadership, and offers a comprehensive programme of transferable skills, initiatives and opportunities. It is named after the Earl of Halifax, a prominent 20th-century British politician and diplomat. James celebrates the diversity of its students and offers a wide range of opportunities including a photography programme and award-winning sports teams. The college is well known for its annual ‘quad dash’. It is named after the University’s first Vice-Chancellor, Lord James. Langwith is one of the two original colleges and is named after Langwith Common. It now occupies some of the newest accommodation on Heslington East, where it continues its traditional interest in the arts, and also prides itself on its social and community spirit. Vanbrugh fosters the arts. It is named after Sir John Vanbrugh, playwright and architect, who married into the de Yarburgh family, then owners of the Heslington Estate, which is now the site of the University. Wentworth is the postgraduate college and has a diverse community in terms of nationality, age and life experience. It provides opportunities that add value to the experience of busy postgraduates. It is named after Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, the last great President of the Council of the North (1593–1641).
