Learners with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities
COURSES AND INFORMATION 2013 – 2014 Our Department provides a wide variety of part-time day and evening courses for adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. All discrete courses for adults with learning difficulties are mapped to selected units of the ASDAN Entry 1 Qualification in Personal Progress, part of Foundation Learning.
Our main aim is: To enable learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities to actively participate and contribute as adults in the community, by making choices, taking decisions, speaking for themselves, taking responsibility for their actions and exercising control over their own lives. In this booklet you should find all the information you need to enrol on one of our courses, but for further information please contact: Alison Ming LLDD Curriculum Manager SCOLA St Nicholas Way Sutton SM1 1EA Tel: 020 8770 4214 Fax: 020 8770 6933 Email:

Entitlement Criteria for the Allocation of Places on Courses
for adults with learning difficulties
The following factors will be taken into account when allocating places on courses for adults with learning difficulties:
Not in order of preference • • • • • • • • • • •
Learner expressed preference Priority to new learners Appropriateness of course/level Availability of transport Availability of support staff if required Appropriateness of environment A balanced curriculum over time to individual learners Tutor recommendation Previous attendance record Health & Safety considerations Agreed length of time learner can remain on a specific course
Any offer of places will be provisional until confirmed in writing.
Agreed by the Learning Difficulties Advisory Group, November 2005
Learning Support Services In line with College procedures, following a disclosure of a difficulty and/or disability, an assessment of individual needs will be made. The College will try to provide, wherever possible and practical, the type of support that would be needed to access mainstream provision. For example, SCOLA operates a co-student and volunteer scheme. You will find details of our mainstream courses in the main SCOLA Course Guide and on the website, www.scola.ac.uk. As stated in our Single Equality Statement we are not able to offer support in the following areas: • Provision or arrangement of transport • Personal care, support or specialist supervision at meal breaks • Supervision outside teaching hours • Specialist, personal support in the classroom on an individual basis.

ENROLMENT INFORMATION How to Enrol:
On all courses ‘for adults with learning difficulties’ Adults with learning difficulties should make an appointment for an initial information and assessment interview with the LLDD Curriculum Manager before enrolling on a course, and may bring someone to act as their advocate if they wish. This is to enable them to make informed choices about the courses they would like to do, and for us to take some personal details to advise them on the suitability of courses. A personalised timetable will be agreed to meet individual learning goals, choices and interests. If their chosen course is full we will put them on a waiting list.
On ‘transition level courses’ Progression to transition level courses is by assessment interview or referral from your tutor.
On all other courses For other courses mentioned in this booklet you may enrol by post, in person, online or by telephone (please refer to main SCOLA Course Guide, our website www.scola.ac.uk, or contact Sutton Centre).
Tuition Fees & Charges 2013-2014 For 2013/14 learners on discrete provision for adults with learning difficulties will pay a £45 additional resources fee for the year which covers all the classes they will attend up to 6 hours tuition. Students with learning difficulties attending mainstream courses should refer to the main SCOLA Course Guide for information regarding fees.
