40th Anniversay Bull Session Stan Yarrish - OVR and Drei Staaten Gruppe Member

The Drei Staaten Gruppe, started by a small group of local Porsche 356 owners in 1976, celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Bull Session on May 21-22. This special anniversary weekend included a Saturday drive and visit to the United States Air Force Museum in nearby Dayton, Ohio and a stop at America’s Packard Museum on the way back to Cincinnati. Saturday night was capped off with a dinner cruise on the Ohio River, which drew 25 DSG guests. The main event on Sunday was held at Sharon Woods County Park in Cincinnati with a private shelter and room for over 75 cars on the spacious flat lawn. Sunday provided gorgeous weather and brought out about 75 guests, 18 356s and another 18 911s, a restored VW, a Singer Porsche 911, a new Cayman GT4, and the ultimate technology wagon, a Porsche 918 Spyder owned by Mike Valentine. After lunch, the activities included a small 356 parts swap meet, a photo gallery of past events compiled by Steve Smith, a very difficult Porsche 356 Trivia Quiz, and the People’s Choice Awards for the top five cars. The Long Distance trophy went to John Harvey of Columbia, Maryland driving his well-travelled coupe over 500 miles each way to enjoy the events of the weekend. John experienced a bit of a mechanical dilemma when the ignition switch decided to come apart. Luckily he was already in Cincinnati and our resident 356 parts house, Dick Weiss came to the rescue by installing a spare switch to keep John moving. It was good to see many Ohio Valley Region members and their cars at our event. Publishing the announcement of the event in the Bent Pylon and on the OVR website was a big help. Thanks to the club for helping spread the word about our event. We will do this again on May 21, 2017 at the Lone Oak Pavilion in Sharon Woods. Save the date! For additional info about the Drei Staaten Gruppe, visit our website at www. dreistaatengruppe.com.

Donna Dreher and others peruse the prize table for Porsche Trivia Quiz, with donations from Stoddard's, Zim's and Porsche of the Village. 4

Cayman GT4 Clubsport PCA Club Racing

Sprint Race 1 Recap The PCA Club Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport Trophy East series kicked off the third event of the season at the 3.4-mile, 11-turn hilltop Watkins Glen International track on Saturday, June 4. Keith Jensen, representing the Maverick PCA Region, started the race on pole and led Sprint 1 from flag to flag, taking the victory by 20.427 seconds. Jensen, who swept all three races at NOLA Motorsports Park in April, credited his win to his team, coach Jason Hart and his Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

want to thank the Porsche Club and Porsche Motorsports, Porsche Cars, Kelly Moss, my daughter Nicole who came in sixth place. She and I are having the most fun! In third place in Sprint 1 I was on the bumper of P2, but I just never found a clean pass and so I just had to accept P3. But my fastest lap in Sprint 1 got me up to second position for Sprint 2 and I was able to hold it."

Following his fourth-place finish in the endurance race at NOLA, Adam Merzon, representing the Connecticut Valley PCA Region, started in second and finished on the podium for the first time this year in second place with his No. 7 DeMan Motorsport Porsche. Rounding out the overall podium in third was Rene Robichaud, representing the Ohio Valley PCA Region in the No. 89 Kelly-Moss Road and Race Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Robichaud also took first in the Masters Class. The battle for second and third for the Championship Podium was close, with Merzon beating Robichaud by just .549 seconds. Robichaud quote for Sprint Race #1 "Today was much better than qualifying. My times came down nicely. I feel like I am really starting to get to know the track and the car and the new surface and it just felt great. I was closing in on P2 the whole race, but I just didn't find a big enough hole to get to the second step (on the podium)." Sprint Race 2 Recap For the second sprint race of the day, the grid was set by fastest lap time from Sprint 1. Jensen, Merzon, Robichaud, Swearingin and David Baum, of the Western Michigan PCA Region, started in the top five, respectively. Jensen and Robichaud battled for first place, with Robichaud leading early in the race. However, Jensen progressively extended his lead throughout the 15-lap race and built a gap over the rest of the field to take a 16.462-second victory over Robichaud. Merzon started the race in second, but finished third overall. "Rene (Robichaud) and I were right there. I was waiting for the one mistake, but he didn't make it," Merzon said. "But a very clean and great race. The two of us were glued together from the start to the finish. If I could have just gone over them (Jensen and Robichaud) when they were going neck-and-neck and side-by-side. I was rolling up on them hard but I just couldn't get through them. It was a good battle to watch." Robichaud quote for sprint race #2 "Today was just a great day. Two podiums overall. Second and third. Two first place finishes in the Masters class. I 10

Rene stands on the top step for the Enduro Race. Enduro Race Recap Rene Robichaud used a last-lap pass to win the PCA Club Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport Trophy East series endurance race Sunday, June 5, at Watkins Glen International. Robichaud, representing the Ohio Valley PCA Region in the No. 89 Kelly-Moss Road and Race Cayman GT4 Clubsport, passed David Baum with three turns to go to earn his first victory. Baum, representing the Western Michigan PCA Region, finished second in the No. 24 Autometrics Motorsports entry. The 80-minute race took place in clearing conditions in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York after drivers faced torrential rain during the morning warmup. The varying levels of dampness caused by the early rains created an interesting mix of strategic decisions from teams and drivers. Robichaud quote for Enduro Race "It's the first time I've gotten first place, so I'm delighted by that. David (Baum) was driving a great race for the last 10 laps, and it took me until the last lap of the race to find a little opening where I could go door-to-door with him and finally get a little run on him. In that last lap, we got traffic but I still managed to hang on for a very small lead, and I think that's all that matters, crossing in first. I want to thank so many people - the Kelly-Moss team did great and my daughter Nicole came in position six. For us, top 10 was all we wanted, but she's knocking on the door of top five. I couldn't be happier."

Board Meeting Minutes Josh Snyder - Secretary May 10, 2016 at Firehouse Grill, Blue Ash, Ohio

Attendance Board Members: Grant Karnes, Dennis Okin, Herb Beck, Josh Snyder Committee Chairs: Dale Timmester, Karah-Lyn Crihfield, Brent Fagan, Rich Rosenberg, Jeff Clark, Randy Wilson Members: Alan Godofsky, Patti Godofsky, Susan Okin, Jeff Renner, Van Nianouris, Ed Busam, Greg Curson, Brian Butt, Sven Menninger Executive Board Reports President: Grant Karnes passed out RPM hats and OVR cuzies. He thanked Dennis and Susan Okin, Thomas and Karah-Lyn Crihfield and Herb and Sandi Beck for running a successful DE at Mid Ohio the previous weekend, which had great weather. Grant announced that the Mayor of Mariemont doesn’t want to have RPM this year. The manager of the National Examplar Restaurant also doesn’t want it because he says he’s losing business. The mayor has been politicking to not have the event. Grant presented several options for moving forward. #1 – he could remove himself from the situation and the club could approach Mariemont about keeping the event. #2 – the club could look at other communities such as Mason, Montgomery, Madeira, Milford or Covington (MainStrasse.) Porsche of the Village is interested in being associated with the show regardless if it’s near their location. The members in attendance decided it was best to pursue other locations, so Grant is going to contact Montgomery and Milford first. Vice-President: No report. Treasurer: Herb Beck stated that he received a letter from the IRS stating that members cannot deduct contributions to the club. The club received two deposits from Nation for membership. Last month there were expenses for autocross, the wine tasting as well as refunds for a deposit for the picnic and food for Street Survival. Grant asked the board to think about ways to give back to our members since we have such a healthy treasury. Dennis Okin suggested a new member social in February or March of next year with no charge for new members. Randy Wilson still wants to have a social event later this year in the fall. Patti Godofsky suggested a Trunk-Or-Treat event with Porsches for Halloween.

Concours: Greg Curson brought up the British Car Club Concours on July 10 at Harbin Park in Fairfield. He said there could be a Porsche category if we get enough attendees. DE: Dennis Okin announced that we had 24 first time DE attendees and 62 drivers who had done four or fewer DEs. He shut down registration two and a half weeks early because the event was sold out. There were even eight people on a waitlist. We spent $500 to reserve a floor of the tower, which was packed on the hottest day, Saturday afternoon. Dennis reported that there was no rain and no incidents all weekend. He thanked his wife, Susan, for helping and the many others that also helped. He said we need to order five more loaner helmets and a bag to hold them because we ran out. Historian: No report. Members at Large: No report. Membership: Brent Fagan ran an OVR booth at the Ault Park Concours next to POV. He thinks we’ll get five new members from the event. This month there are eight new members, 824 primary members and 1343 total members. Merchandise: No report. Newsletter: No report. Past President: No report. Rally/Tour: Jeff Clark announced that the June 25 tour is cancelled, but it will be rescheduled. Safety: No report. Social: Randy Wilson reported that he is looking at an event around late October. Technical: No report. Website: Karah-Lyn Crihfield reported that the website was hacked again. About half of the data was deleted. She’s looking to move to another host, but in the meantime she is making regular backups of the website. New Business: Sven Menninger announced that his wife opened a high-end European furniture store in Over-TheRhine across from Music Hall. They would like to host an event for PCA members later in the year for about 50-70 people. The event would most likely be a second wine tasting. Sven will contact Grant to work on more details.

Committee Reports Autocross: Bill Kief announced that the June autocross was rained out and moved to August 27. The club only had seven people pre-registered. Street Survival was a great event and we want to do it again next year. Chief Instructor: Dale Timmester reported that we had a great weekend with instructors at the DE with only one minor incident. 13

Around the Zone Michael Soriano - Zone 4 Representative, Photo by Gary Chisolm

Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members, As we progress further into summer, there are a multitude of events being held throughout Zone 4 to appeal to everyone’s tastes. In mid-May, MORPCA held their Club Race and fully instructed HPDE at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. During the 3 days, they ran 4 Sprint races and 2 Enduros. The HPDE included a lapping day and 2 days of instruction. With 80 racers and 200 DE participants, it made for a very full weekend. MORPCA held a reception on Friday night and an awards banquet was held after Saturday’s exciting races due to Mid-Ohio’s notoriously unpredictable weather. Sunday morning were the two 70 minute Enduro races, and as the first Enduro started, the snowflakes began to fall. As is customary, I presented awards to winners in the GTC3, GTC4, and GTC5 classes. During the first weekend in June, PCNA sponsored the Porscheplatz at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. One of the incentives was a Free Friday corral pass for the first 30 people to purchase Saturday Porscheplatz Tickets. The second incentive was a Michigan State Police led Caravan on to Belle Isle. PCA members and Porsche owners from throughout Zone 4 and the surrounding area visited the hospitality tent Friday, and watched the qualifying sessions on the 2 large TV monitors with live feed from the track, while enjoying the beverages provided. Porsche sent posters for those in attendance as well. Porsche of the Motor City brought several cars to display including their 918. Friday night, several of the guests staying in the room block, joined us and National Vice President Tom Gorsuch for dinner. On Saturday morning, 2 Michigan State Police Cars arrived at The Henry to provide us with an escort to the Porscheplatz. Drivers and passengers in 31 cars met in the lobby to sign waivers and receive some instructions before staging. With our police escorts leading the way and blocking oncoming traffic, we set out on a non-stop 20 mile drive through the streets of Detroit, across the scenic bridge to Belle Isle, and straight to the Car Corral. Everyone who participated agreed that it was even more fun than they had anticipated. When we arrived, the PCA Café was set up with donuts and coffee as the warm up began for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Before the race, Patrick Lindsey and Jorg Bergmeister who drive for Park Place Motorsports graciously hosted a Question and Answer Session. Later on, Leh Keen who drives for Alex Job Racing also hosted a Question and Answer Session. There was also a presentation by Mobil 1 Racing. In addition to these presentations, there were opportunities to win several different prizes including a Hot 14

Pit Experience during a qualifying session and one during the race. There were Hot Lap Experiences, and arrangements were made to allow a large group to tour the Park Place Transporter and ask questions of some of the crew. There were nearly 250 people and 150 cars on Friday and Saturday with additional people and cars on Sunday to view the 2nd Indy race. It was so much fun and many of the attendees were already talking about next year before they left. A huge thanks to everyone that attended, but especially to those who volunteered, there’s a reason that “Fueled by Volunteers” has become the new PCA motto. There are a number of wonderful events taking place this year throughout the zone. We are continuing to try to coordinate all of the region calendars into a master calendar which is posted on the events page of the Zone 4 Website, http://zone4.pca.org. Be sure to check your local region’s website and newsletter for the latest details on the many events close to you that are being planned. Also, consider attending other regions’ events, such as: • Eastern Buckeye Region’s New Member Wine Meet Up at Mastropietro Winery is July 7 • July 9-10 is CIRPCA and MORPCA’s DE at Putnam Park Road Course • Motor-Stadt Region’s Board Meeting at Spagnoulo’s in Okemos is July 12 • July 13 is Western Michigan Region’s Gilmore Dinner Drive • July 15-17 Plan to attend ARPCA’s Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Weekend • Ohio Valley Region’s Autocross is July 16 at Forest Fair Mall • Northern Ohio Region’s Catawba Island Club Mult-Event weekend is July 16-17 • July 19 is Rally Sport Region’s Waterford Hills Track Day • Southeast Michigan Region’s Progressive Dinner is July 23 • Join Maumee Valley Region July 29-31 for their DE at Grattan Raceway • MORPCA’s P2O in Granville, Ohio is July 29-31 • Michiana Region’s Autocross at Tire Rack is July 30 • Come join us at the Zone 4 Concours at the Concours d’Elelgance of America at St. John’s July 31 in Plymouth, MI I look forward to having the opportunity of meeting each and every one of you at events throughout the upcoming year. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me at [email protected]
