Passed by Congress in 1980 Applies to all federally funded research (e.g. NIH, NSF grants) Mandates that Patent Rights vest to the University The University has the responsibility to promote public utilization/commercialization of inventions created with federal funding through licenses Universities to manage IP from federal grants Share revenue with University and inventors and apply residual income to research and education Give preference to small businesses Require that products sold in US be manufactured in US

Phase 1 (Months 1-2)
Phase 2 (Months 3-4)
Read, observe, understand business, legal, and scientific considerations Shadow BDD during routine case management Familiarize with: Bayh Dole act, WUSTL IP policy, patents, AUTM, etc
Conduct various parts of case management under supervision of BDD Conduct inventor meetings, complete TAs, negotiate simple contracts Perform case management duties
Phase 3 (Months 5-6)
Handle cases on own using BDD as guide and checkpoint Handle more complicated case management and understand critical questions and gaps that need to be filled on such cases
