Specific vitamins and minerals can protect cells in the eye against oxidative stress, but many cannot be stored by the body and must be obtained from the diet. The retina is particularly prone to oxidative stress because it is an area of high metabolic activity (like brain tissue).

The most important part of the retina is the macula. Lutein & Zeaxanthin protect the macula from damaging light and oxidative stress. They can only be obtained from the diet, which means eating lots of dark green leafy vegetables and other brightly coloured fruits and vegetables.
Resveratrol has powerful antiinflammatory and anti-oxidant effects, as well as promoting the activities of other antioxidants. Resveratrol is produced by plants, particularly vines, but also found in berries and peanuts.
