An Evening at WKAR

November 1 – December 15 Once again, WKAR will host a drive for the Greater Lansing Food Bank. This is WKAR’s 25th year of supporting the organization with items collected from viewers, listeners, MSU students and our colleagues at Michigan State University. As always, high-protein, professionally packaged items are welcome, including canned juices, peanut butter, soups and stews and cereal. In addition, we also accept personal products, including toilet paper, tissue and dental items. Last year, we collected 978 pounds! Help us top 1,000 this year! Bring items to WKAR’s south lobby at the Communication Arts & Sciences building on the MSU campus. Visit WKAR.org for a map.

A Thankful Tree…

Take table decorating off your Thanksgiving Day task list – let the KIDS make the centerpiece! They’ll love to draw, cut and color the paper leaves. And they'll also have a chance to see how much they have to be grateful for. Find this project and more at pbsparents.org.

Materials

Here's how you make your tree:

• • • • •

1. Draw leaf shapes on colored paper, or trace around cookie cutters.

colored paper leaf-shaped cookie cutters* pencils, markers or crayons scissors (adult and child-size) adhesive (glue or tape) or string and a hole punch • 2 to 3 bare tree branches • tall vase • stones or sand • acorns* *If you have them.

2. Cut out the leaves carefully with scissors. (Cut out some extra leaves so guests can add their own thankful thoughts.)

3. Using crayons or markers, write things that you are thankful for on the leaves, like family members, the dog or pizza! Help the little ones record their thoughts. 4. Attach your leaves to bare tree branches with tape or glue, or by punching a hole in each leaf and tying them to the tree branches with string or ribbon.

More ideas for promoting giving and thankfulness

5. Put stones or sand in the bottom of the vase for stability. If you have acorns you picked up on a walk outdoors, sprinkle them in for effect!

• Have your child choose a gently used toy or book to give to a worthy cause.

6. Put the branches in the vase and your tree is complete.

• Lead by example. Bring your child along when you make a donation to something like a food bank drive and explain why giving is important. • Let your child help decide where you can make a charitable contribution. 12 November 2012 | StayTuned

Peter and Tim Talk Music! Lansing Symphony Orchestra musical director and conductor Timothy Muffitt stopped by WKAR in October to spend a couple of hours with WKAR Radio station manager Peter Whorf. They shared a terrific conversation on 90.5 WKAR about the conductor’s favorite music and insights. Lots of WKAR fans submitted questions via the WKAR and 90.5 Facebook pages. The two hours flew by and, judging from the feedback, the visit was a great success. Or, as Bill Fullmer wrote on WKAR.org, “Please repeat this show so I can hear all of it. Just caught a small part and it was terrific!” Muffitt was kind enough to share his playlist with you. With the holidays coming, maybe these will end up on your gift list!
