Highlights

On 17 January Swiss Youth Hostels were honoured to receive the 2011 Sustainability Prize of the Zurich Cantonal Bank. This Prize proves once more that we are on the right path with our sustainability strategy. The first sod for the new Interlaken Youth Hostel was also turned in January. The participating partners, Raiffeisenbank and Jungfraubahnen, set great store by sustainability.  A project is therefore being implemented that takes equal account of ecology, economics and social aspects. The new building will be the first hostel and one of the first banks to be built using the MINERGIE-P-ECO construction method. It will open in spring 2012. You can already make reservations. The 100 th online booking can stay in Interlaken free of charge.

Last swing turns and great parties Still winter or spring already? Up above, bright sunshine, glistening mountains, superb pistes and descents, and a party at the bottom: organisers pull out all the stops at the end of winter. March and April are the months for a great time on and off the slopes. Everything is in full swing in ski areas at the end of the season. The events calendar is full. International sporting events, concerts, horned sledge races, festivals and different fun events turn March and April into a farewell party. Bernese Oberland The annual horned sledge race in Grindelwald is great fun. This traditional sport is becoming more popular in many places. One or two participants may get lost during this amusing race. Where: Grindelwald | When: 5 March 2011 Information: www.myjungfrau.ch "Splash the Poolrace" provides superb entertainment in Grindelwald. Clothed skiers and snowboarders take a run-up and try to glide across a 25-metre-long pool. The colourful and lavishly designed fun mobiles, which are reminiscent of carnival floats, also ensure a great deal of action in this not entirely serious competition. Where: Grindelwald | When: 2 April 2011 Information: www.jungfaubahn.ch One highlight in the Bernese Oberland is "Snowpenair" on "Kleine Scheidegg". The highest (2’061 metres above sea level) open-air concert in snow is held against the unique backdrop of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. National and international music acts thrill the audience every year. Where: Grindelwald, Kleine Scheidegg | When: 9–10 April 2011 Information: www.snowpenair.ch Revelry is the name of the game during the Freeride Days in Gstaad. The Glacier 3’000 freeride and ski area makes every

rider's heart beat faster. Spectators can watch spectacular shows at close quarters. After riding, a party is held in the village. Where: Gstaad | When: 9–10 April 2011 Information: www.freeridedays.ch Davos DAS ZELT, the Swiss touring musical theatre, will stop in Davos this year for the second time. The only touring theatre in Switzerland has elegant theatre tents and cosy pavilions. The best comedians in Switzerland appear on stage. Where: Davos | When: until 5 March 2011 Information: www.daszelt.ch The Parsenn Derby in Davos is legendary. This highly traditional, open ski race was held for the first time in 1924. Professionals and amateurs have been competing against one another in team and individual races for 77 years. Top-class ski racing. Where: Davos | When: 11–13 March 2011 Information: www.scdavos.ch Zermatt "Zermatt unplugged" is the only festival in Europe to solely feature performances with acoustic instruments. Since it was first held in 2007, it has increasingly become the meeting-point for pure sounds with international stars from the world of music. An unusual concept "reduced to the maximum". Where: Zermatt | When: 12–16 April 2011 Information: www.zermatt-unplugged.com

Lenzerheide Lenzerheide also has an international air in spring. The holiday region has successfully staged the final race in the Audi FIS Ski World Cup series twice in the last three years. This year it will be held for the third time on the Silvano Beltrametti World Cup piste. Where: Lenzerheide | When: 16–20 March 2011 Information: www.weltcup-lenzerheide.ch Another event is the Swiss Alpine Skiing Championships, also held on the Silvano Beltrametti course. Men and women compete in slalom and giant slalom disciplines. Where: Lenzerheide | When: 26–27 March 2011 Information: www.weltcup-lenzerheide.ch Engadine An entirely different event is the Snow & Symphony Graubünden Festival. This classic music festival is a "symbiosis of music, sport and cultivated life". The Festival is held everywhere: before mighty mountain backdrops, in mountain or transformer stations, or in elegant banqueting or dining rooms of grand hotels. The Festival attracts some of the best orchestras, conductors, ensembles and soloists. Where St. Moritz | When: 17 March–2 April 2011 Information: www.graubuendenfestival.ch Rhätische Bahn offers a real treat for romantics: an exciting rail trip on the Bernina line in the panoramic carriage of RhB during a full moon to Alp Grüm, past permanent ice and including a glacier fondue dinner. Where: from St. Moritz/Samedan | When: 19/20 March 2011 Information: www.rhb.ch The Swiss Snowboard Championships will take place in Engadin. The speed cracks will compete on Corvatsch at the start of April. Exciting races in a cool atmosphere are guaranteed. Where: St. Moritz, Corvatsch | When: 1–3 April 2011 Information: www.swiss-snowboard.ch The "Schlager Snow Night" is an event for music fans with a sizzling party atmosphere in the tent. Held every year with the Pissnelken, the "Schlager Snow Night" has become legendary. Where: Silvaplana | When: 1 April 2011 Information: www.younic.ch

Principality of Liechtenstein Small and exquisite: covering an area of just 160 km², the Principality of Liechtenstein nestles in the mountains between Switzerland and Austria.

Youth Hostel in the middle In the middle of the small country is SchaanVaduz Youth Hostel, the place to start discov-

ering the Principality. Renovated a few years ago, the Youth Hostel lies in open countryside on the boundary between Schaan and Vaduz, 500 metres from the main road. Anyone cycling on the Rhine Route of Cycling in Switzerland will find their bed directly here. The bright and spacious building is very popular with families. Special family rooms offer intimacy and quiet. When eating in the Youth Hostel, guests have a view of fields and mountains. Weather permitting, barbecues are also held outside in the garden. The Youth Hostel contains a total of 110 beds in double, 3-bed, 5-bed and 6-bed rooms, some with shower/WC, a large dining room for 80 people, a seminar room with 50 places, a TV and video, overhead projectors, screen, flipchart, magnetic board and piano. The Youth Hostel is therefore also suitable for seminars and project conferences. Families feel at home with the play meadow, toys, table football, darts and pool table, and adolescents with the Internet corner. Bikes can be rented directly in the Youth Hostel. Liechtenstein contains enough room for prosperity, modernity and tradition to coexist. The small country with eleven villages and 36’000 inhabitants contains everything a state needs. Liechtenstein's landmark is Vaduz Castle high above the capital of the same name. The Castle has been owned by the Prince of Liechtenstein since 1712 and is not open to the public as it is the Royal Family residence. However, guests are welcome in the Principality's museums, e.g. the Ski Museum, Stamp Museum, Walser Heritage Museum and National Museum – or in the architectural masterpiece of the Museum of Fine Arts which shows works ranging from old masters up to contemporary art. Culinary connoisseurs can also find international award-winning gourmet restaurants while the Prince's Hofkellerei in Vaduz is regarded as an inside tip for wine experts. Situated 1’600 metres above sea level, Malbun boasts the quality symbol "Families welcome". In summer it is the starting point for fantastic walks and in winter the skiing area for guests and locals with the most modern lifts. Active holidaymakers and people wanting to relax can find varied and attractive offers in both the mountains and valleys. Information: Liechtenstein Tourism, www.tourismus.li, phone +423 239 63 00.

In shopping centres, amusement parks or crowded railway stations, i.e. places containing large numbers of people, there is a danger of losing a child. Wouldn't it be reassuring if you were equipped to deal with such cases and could quickly hug your darling child again? Play it safe with kidHELP: your child receives a special armband showing an emergency number and an identification number. The person finding your child can use these numbers to immediately contact the ELVIA emergency centre which is manned 24 hours a day and will notify you straightaway. This only costs CHF 22.00 per armband and is valid for 365 days. For further information, visit: www.youthhostel.ch/en/kidhelp
