PFCU FISHTOWN/NKCDC 2017 KINETIC SCULPTURE DERBY TEAM CALL FOR ENTRIES DEADLINE: March 24, 2017

Philadelphia Federal Credit Union (PFCU), in collaboration with the New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC), is excited to announce it will sponsor a team in this year’s PFCU Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival. We seek to sponsor a team of students led by a teacher or after-school program leader from any school within the city of Philadelphia that has the workspace to design, build, house, and operate a sculpture during this year’s derby. If you have a great idea for a derby sculpture, work well with others, and love your community, we want to hear from you! Overview: As the title sponsor of this year’s derby, PFCU is working with the NKCDC to recruit and select a teacherled student team to participate in the derby as the official sponsored team of PFCU. Teams are invited to use their creativity in brainstorming a sculpture concept/theme. Upon selection, the winning team will meet for an orientation session with a PFCU representative to discuss budget and protocol for the build process. The sponsored team has a unique opportunity to be the face of this year’s derby – we’ll be documenting your creative build process each step of the way and sharing it with the community and the media, enabling the public to get a behind-the-scenes look at the sculpture-making process and the community spirit that underscores this event. Goals:   

Engage local residents, artists, businesses, and schools to join together in creating a sculpture that represents the Philadelphia community – ideally, East Kensington/Fishtown Foster relationships between local students and community professionals to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning through the creative build process Provide unique access to the public by documenting the community-minded spirit of Philadelphia students, residents, and professionals

Build Site: The winning team is responsible for securing its sculpture-building workspace/storage facility and transporting it to the derby on May 20, 2017. Budget: PFCU will give the selected team a budget of $4,000 to design, build, and transport its sculpture to the derby. Eligibility: This call is open to a team of students (ninth grade and higher) led by a teacher(s) and/or after-school program leader(s) in Philadelphia who:  Has a strong desire to celebrate the neighborhood (see map in Appendix A)  Can secure a work and storage space to construct and house the sculpture until the event  Consents to being filmed and/or photographed as part of a documentary of the process  Adheres to all rules as stated in Appendix B  Completes the waiver of responsibility and photo release form upon selection (see Appendix C) Schedule: Phase I: Call for Entries Opens (March 3, 2017)  First Friday Derby Kickoff Happy Hour o Bottle Bar East (1308 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125) o March 3 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. o PFCU representatives will be on hand to answer questions about the Call for Entries  Deadline for Entries: March 24, 2017 Phase II: Team Selection  Winning Team Notified: March 31, 2017
