INSIDE THE NUMBERS * Thirty-eight NHLers (35 skaters, 3 goaltenders) have played for both the Capitals and Blackhawks. * Of those 38, only one has skated in at least 200 games for both clubs – current Capitals forward Troy Brouwer (CHI: 238, WSH: 246). Brouwer played for the Blackhawks in the 2009 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic against the Red Wings at Wrigley Field. * These clubs have split their last 10 meetings dating to March 12, 2004. The Capitals are 5-4-1 (11 points) in those contests, while the Blackhawks are 5-3-2 (12 points). * The Capitals, however, have won five of their past seven matchups dating to Oct. 11, 2008. That includes a 3-2 victory in their first and only other meeting this season on Nov. 7 at United Center. In that contest, the Capitals scored three unanswered goals in the second period – by Andre Burakovsky, Marcus Johansson and Joel Ward – to overcome a 2-0 deficit. * The Capitals have played host to the Blackhawks just three times since the start of 2006-07 season, most recently on April 11, 2014 (a 4-0 victory). Prior to that, the Blackhawks had not visited the U.S. capital since March 13, 2011. * This marks the second outdoor game appearance for the Capitals, who also participated in the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic against the Penguins at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh (a 3-1 victory). * The Blackhawks will be skating in their third outdoor game, following their appearances in the 2009 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field (a 6-4 loss) and 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series at Soldier Field (a 5-1 victory), both in Chicago. * Fourteen players on the Capitals roster have skated in a regular-season outdoor NHL game. Of those 14, two have participated in more than one such game: Jason Chimera (2003 HC, 2011 WC) and Brooks Orpik (2008 WC, 2011 WC, 2014 SS). * Nineteen players on the Blackhawks roster have participated in a regular-season outdoor NHL game. That includes 17 of their 20 players who appeared in the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series at Soldier Field.

2015 BRIDGESTONE NHL WINTER CLASSIC UNIFORMS
WASHINGTON CAPITALS The Capitals’ uniform for the 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic includes many elements from the club’s jerseys worn during the past five decades. The “Capitals” wordmark on the front of the jersey has been a hallmark of the franchise’s jerseys throughout the past four decades, even through several redesigns. The stars on the front also are an element seen on many Capitals uniforms through the years, including the team’s current jersey. The primary color for the Capitals’ 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic uniform is vintage deep red to symbolize hockey’s deep roots in Washington. The stripes on the shoulders, waist and legs bring in elements of Washington professional hockey jerseys from the 1930s, predating the Capitals’ formation in the 1970s. A large “W” on the front of the jersey is offset in blue to contrast the white Capitals wordmark and features a silhouette of the Washington Monument, offering a unique look never seen before on a Capitals jersey. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS Inspired by the 1957 jersey worn by the team, the Blackhawks’ white jersey for the 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic features a lace-up collar and secondary logos on each sleeve; the secondary logos overlap the top two stripes on the sleeve rather than the traditional shoulder placement.

NATIONALS PARK
* Nationals Park, home of MLB’s Washington Nationals, is located in southeast Washington, south of the Capitol and along the Capitol Riverfront adjacent to the Navy Yard. The stadium is approximately 2 miles from Verizon Center, the home arena of the Capitals. * Nationals Park opened in March 2008, cost $611 million and seats 41,546 for baseball. * Nationals Park offers panoramic views of the riverfront, Navy Yard and landmarks such as the Capitol and Washington Monument. * Nationals Park has approximately 3,500 pieces of steel in the bowl structure, equaling 7,800 tons. * Architect HOK Sport borrowed from the now-demolished Griffith Stadium, the former home of the Washington Senators, in designing outfield dimensions for the new ballpark. * Nationals Park hosted its first regular-season MLB game on March 30, 2008. Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Washington a 3-2 win over Atlanta. * Nationals Park was the first major stadium in the United States accredited as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Structure. * Water-conserving plumbing fixtures are used throughout the ballpark, saving an estimated 3.6 million gallons of water per year and reducing overall water consumption by 30 percent. * Layers of fill and old bricks were found 12-14 feet below grade during the stadium’s construction, indicating the probability of roads and habitation at this level in the 1800s. * Inspiration for the look of Nationals Park is taken from the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art, by architect I.M. Pei. * Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Mass in front of 47,000 at a packed Nationals Park on April 17, 2008, during a six-day visit to Washington and New York. 6

HISTORY OF NHL OUTDOOR GAMES
2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic BC Place – Vancouver, B.C. March 2, 2014 Ottawa Senators 4 at Vancouver Canucks 2 Attendance: 54,194 Trailing 2-0 midway through the first period, the Senators scored four unanswered goals to defeat the Canucks in the 2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic, contested in front of 54,194 fans at BC Place in Vancouver. With the win, road teams improved to 10-2-1 in the NHL’s 13 combined Winter Classic, Heritage Classic and Stadium Series games. The Senators also became the fourth team to overcome a two-goal deficit to win one of the 13 contests (following DET in 2009 WC, NYR in 2012 WC and NYR in 2014 SS). “It’s a big win for us and it’s a great venue and it’s one of those things that we’ll be smiling about for a while, because it’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Senators goaltender Craig Anderson. “I thought both teams put on a great show for the fans,” added forward Clarke MacArthur, who posted 1-1—2 to spark Ottawa’s comeback.

2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series Soldier Field – Chicago, Ill. March 1, 2014 Pittsburgh Penguins 1 at Chicago Blackhawks 5 Attendance: 62,921
Snow fell throughout the game, providing a winter wonderland for the finale of the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series at Soldier Field. More than 60,000 fans – the fourth-largest crowd in NHL history – braved the elements to watch the Blackhawks defeat the Penguins 5-1. Captain Jonathan Toews led the way with 2-1—3, including the game-winner in highlight-reel fashion, to match the records for goals and points in a regular-season outdoor NHL game. “I think it was exciting for us as players to be a part of this and play at Soldier Field,” said Toews. “We’ve played in a couple different venues now in Chicago, and it’s pretty amazing to think. But this is probably even more so great for the fans. I think as a team we’re super happy. We’re able to find a way to win, and not only win, but put on an exciting game for the fans, just like the weather.” “Probably the greatest setting you could want. Everybody went back to when they were kids. Everybody felt they were going outside and playing in the snow,” added Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville. “What an environment, what a feeling, the crowd, the snow, a great opponent.”

I’m just thankful to get this opportunity and also [to] everyone [who] showed up to make it so special,” said Lundqvist, who picked up his third regular-season outdoor NHL game win. “It’s two days that I will remember for the rest of my life.” “You never really know until you’re there and you see that great atmosphere,” said Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, who made 32 saves in defeat. “I love it; I love every second of it. The atmosphere was great.” “It was unbelievable. It was a lot of fun. I’d play every game like this,” added Islanders captain John Tavares. “I think for our game it’s great.”

Jan. 26, 2014 New York Rangers 7 at New Jersey Devils 3 Attendance: 50,105 More than 50,000 fans watched the Devils battle the Rangers in the first of a twin bill at Yankee Stadium as part of the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series. Trailing 3-1 late in the first period, the Rangers scored six unanswered goals to become the first team to win two regular-season outdoor NHL games, following their 3-2 victory over the Flyers in the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. “Walking out for warm-ups, I was taking it all in. Mats Zuccarello led the comeback for New York, scoring the tying and winning goals to match a regular-season outdoor NHL game record. The Rangers also set the record for the most goals in a regular-season outdoor NHL game (7) and the most goals in a single period of a regular-season outdoor NHL game (4, second period). “It was just a great day. 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, Calif. Jan. 25, 2014 Anaheim Ducks 3 at Los Angeles Kings 0 Attendance: 54,099
A sold-out crowd of 54,099 packed Dodger Stadium for the first matchup of the four-game 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series, the first regular-season outdoor NHL game played in the U.S. west of the Mississippi River, the southernmost outdoor game in League history and the first-ever outdoor NHL game in California. Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller made 36 saves to record the second shutout in a regular-season outdoor NHL game and also stopped the second penalty shot in outdoor game history, denying Kings forward Anze Kopitar at 9:46 of the first period en route to a 3-0 victory. “Everything that you could hope for, it happened today,” said Ducks forward Corey Perry, who scored the gamewinning goal at 2:45 of the first period. “You can’t say one thing negative. 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic Michigan Stadium – Ann Arbor, Mich. Jan. 1, 2014 Toronto Maple Leafs 3 at Detroit Red Wings 2 (SO) Attendance: 105,491
A record crowd of 105,491 watched the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs rekindle their Original Six rivalry at The Big House on the University of Michigan campus in the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. Snow fell throughout the day, providing the perfect backdrop for a thrilling game. Tyler Bozak gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 advantage early in the third period, but Red Wings forward and Michigan State alum Justin Abdelkader knotted the score with 5:32 remaining in regulation. After a scoreless overtime, the teams contested the second shootout in NHL outdoor game history, with Bozak proving the hero behind 41 saves (plus two more in the shootout) from Jonathan Bernier, who wore a tuque on top of his mask. “Seeing the fans and hearing them, it’s an experience that I won’t forget and one that I’m really honored and privileged to have been part of. For a player to play in a game like this with as many people that were here and the weather and everything, it was an unbelievable time,” said Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf. “It couldn’t have been any better of [a] script, it goes right to a shootout with the snow falling all day. It was just a great experience all around.” “For me, today was a home run for hockey,” added Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock. “I thought it was a spectacular venue, great crowd for both teams. Great hockey game.”

2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, Pa. Jan. 2, 2012 New York Rangers 3 at Philadelphia Flyers 2 Attendance: 46,967 Ceremonial Puck Drop: Staff Sgt. Deane Barnhardt
The historic rivalry between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers was on full display when the teams moved outdoors to Citizens Bank Park in the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. The action on the ice lived up to the sky-high expectations of the capacity crowd, as the tightly contested, physical hockey game hung in the balance with 19.6 seconds remaining in the third period and the Flyers’ Danny Briere standing alone at center ice after being awarded the first penalty shot in Winter Classic history. When Rangers All-Star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist proved to be up to the task, the road team escaped with a narrow 3-2 victory. The home team delighted the Philadelphia crowd by jumping out to a 2-0 lead with goals by Brayden Schenn (his first career NHL goal) and star forward Claude Giroux within two minutes of each other in the second period. The Rangers’ comeback was led by unlikely offensive hero Mike Rupp, whose two goals evened the score before Brad Richards put New York ahead 5:21 into the third period. A sellout crowd also filled the ballpark two days earlier for a game between Flyers and Rangers alumni.

2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic Heinz Field – Pittsburgh, Pa. Jan. 1, 2011 Washington Capitals 3 at Pittsburgh Penguins 1 Attendance: 68,111
The 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic was the most-viewed NHL regular-season game in the U.S. in 36 years, with an average of 4.5 million viewers watching in primetime as the Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in front of more than 68,000 at sold-out Heinz Field. The game, originally scheduled for the afternoon, was played at night under the bright lights of Heinz Field after a storm brought rain and forced the delayed start time. Evgeni Malkin scored the game’s first goal on a breakaway 2:13 into the second period, but the home team’s lead lasted just 4:41, as Capitals forward Mike Knuble scored to even the game. Eric Fehr then scored the eventual game-winner at 14:45 of the second period to help Washington skate away with a 3-1 victory. 16
The Jan. 1 game brought together two of the League’s star players – Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin – and provided an unforgettable experience for both. The 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic also brought to life an HBO special titled 24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic, which earned a Sports Emmy Award for outstanding edited sports special.

You couldn’t ask for anything better for the game of hockey.” Marco Sturm’s goal at the 1:57 mark of overtime capped a furious rally by the Bruins, who won by a 2-1 score. The Flyers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second period when Danny Syvret scored his first NHL goal. The Bruins tied it in dramatic fashion when Mark Recchi scored during a power play late in the third period.

In the end, the Penguins topped the Sabres, 2-1, in a shootout as Pittsburgh’s 20-year-old captain Sidney Crosby finished the game in exciting fashion, beating Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller in the shootout as the snow continued to fall. “When you see 70,000 people jammed into a stadium to watch hockey, it’s a good sign,” Crosby said. “The atmosphere and environment, I don’t think you can beat that. It’s something to look back on and say we had a lot of great memories being a part of it.” 18

BUILDING AN ICE RINK FOR AN OUTDOOR NHL GAME Constructing an NHL-caliber ice rink outdoors at a facility designed for a sport other than hockey is a unique challenge. Much more than taking a garden hose into your backyard and flooding an area, for its outdoor games, the National Hockey League uses special equipment, expertise and technology to create an ice rink fit for the best hockey players in the world. The most important aspects of making outdoor ice for an NHL game are ensuring the conditions meet all of the safety standards required for the players and providing all of the tools necessary for an NHL game. To accommodate its outdoor games, the NHL designed and built a one-of-a-kind mobile refrigeration unit and rink system. The main function of the 53-foot, 300-ton capacity refrigeration unit is to perform the key function of making a great sheet of ice – to remove heat from the surface and stabilize the temperature. To do this, the unit pumps as much as 3,000 gallons of glycol coolant into custom-made aluminum trays that are configured on the field of the stadium. Running through a series of hoses from the refrigeration unit to the field, the glycol chills the trays in order to keep the ice near its ideal surface temperature of 22°F/-5.56°C. Following the placement of the ice trays, the rink boards are installed. Once the boards are up and the ideal surface temperature is attained, the actual process of building the ice begins. In an NHL arena, the ice is built to a thickness of approximately 1-1.25 inches. An outdoor rink, however, requires up to 2 inches of ice thickness to help withstand the more extreme elements. While many speculate that it takes special water to create the ice, the water used is the same tap water provided into everyone’s homes. Water is added as slowly as possible, in as fine a mist as the process will allow. Workers pass the spray wand over the ice rink hundreds of times, providing a more-even freeze and better-quality playing surface. Each inch of ice thickness requires approximately 10,000 gallons of water. For finishing touches, the ice surface is whitened using approximately 350 gallons of water soluble paint. The lines and logos then are painted and placed on the surface, with more ice built on top. Once constructed, monitoring the status of the ice is a 24-hour job. To help this process, a high-tech system called “Eye on the Ice” is embedded in the surface. The technology provides updates on temperatures at different areas of the ice, signaling an alert prompting the need to pump more glycol or engage the in-line heating system in case the weather gets too cold. ABOUT DAN CRAIG Dan Craig is the National Hockey League’s senior director of facilities operations and oversees and advises on the quality of the League’s 30 ice surfaces. A native of the Alberta resort town of Jasper, Craig began preparing ice at his local rink part-time while he was in high school. After a decade with the Edmonton Oilers spent producing what generally was considered the League’s best playing surface, Craig joined the NHL in 1997. Since then, he has been the point person for a number of special events, most notably all of the NHL’s outdoor games.

2015 BRIDGESTONE NHL WINTER CLASSIC LEGACY INITIATIVE
On Friday, Dec. 5, the NHL and Capitals unveiled the refurbished ‘Watkins Rush Rink,’ a street hockey rink at Watkins Elementary School and Recreation Center in southeast Washington, D.C. The NHL, Capitals and League partners teamed to renovate the rink as part of the NHL’s Legacy Initiative, an ongoing philanthropic endeavor in the host city of an NHL event. Thanks to the generous support of NHL partners Bridgestone, Franklin, Constellation, Pepco, ECORE International and CleanRiver Recycling Solutions, as well as local support from D.C. Parks & Recreation and D.C. Public Schools, the Legacy Initiative invested more than $115,000 into the community. Contributions included a brand new Sport Court; new team benches; rubber matting surrounding the rink made from 170 recycled tires; repaired netting; repaired boards; updated energy-efficient lighting; new goalie nets; new recycle bin receptacles; and new street hockey equipment. “While the 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will be memorable in a host of ways, it is a priority for the National Hockey League that the impact of this outstanding event lasts long after the game concludes,” said Commissioner Gary Bettman. “By refurbishing Watkins Rush Rink, we hope to provide a source of fun and fitness to generations of youngsters who want to enjoy street hockey – while also supporting our commitment to environmentally-friendly initiatives.” In addition to the refurbishment of ‘Watkins Rush Rink,’ the Capitals also provided street hockey development and training for 23 physical education teachers in 21 Washington, D.C., public schools in order to implement the sport into their programming and promote an active and healthy lifestyle for youth through hockey. Each of these schools received new street hockey equipment – including sticks, balls, nets and goalie pads – which will benefit more than 8,000 local students. Click here to learn more.

The Northern California vs. Southern California rivalry will be televised nationally in the U.S. on NBCSN and in Canada on Hockey Night in Canada and TVA Sports 2. When they take the ice at Levi’s Stadium – marking the club’s 1,799th regularseason game since joining the NHL in 1991-92 – the franchise will make its debut in an outdoor game, becoming the 19th NHL team to participate in such a contest. The Kings will appear in their second regularseason outdoor NHL game, having faced their local rival, the Anaheim Ducks, in the historic clash last season at Dodger Stadium.
