Helping SAS out at campaign actions, volunteering at beach cleans, promoting our campaign actions to friends on Facebook or Twitter, picking up a few pieces of marine litter after an epic session at your home break, reporting local pollution incidents to the Environment Agency, attending an SAS campaign talk, monitoring your local combined sewer overflow (CSO) and much more are all part of SAS’s ‘Big Marine Society’. Together, as water users - individuals, families or companies - passionate about protecting the UK’s coastal environment for this and future generations, we all have the power to help make a difference, and step up in a wide variety of ways to do just that. 2010 was an amazing year for SAS in this respect, with a dramatic increase in the level of supporter engagement at important campaign actions and, of course, a massive increase in the number of volunteering opportunities we created to help protect beaches especially through beach cleans. We were delighted to receive the support of the National Youth Volunteering Charity, V V, to develop the Motivocean Beach Clean & Sport Tour Tour. The tour was so successful that V retained SAS as part of the myGames programme this year, and the project has been awarded the Olympic/ London 2012 Inspire Mark. London 2012’s Inspire programme is helping bring the benefits of the 2012 Games to every part of the UK – giving millions the opportunity to participate as never before. I am also thrilled to see the network of SAS Regional Reps growing around the country, who act as our local ambassadors and coastal wardens in the majority of the key surfing and water sports locations. We’re producing a handy booklet with all their key details and contact information that will be sent to all members with the next edition of Pipeline. You’ll also receive some campaigning stickers – ‘No Butts on the Beach’ and ‘Think Before You Flush’ – so make sure you use these appropriately as one of your SAS actions this year. We have some very important projects coming up this year, with particular focus on real-time CSO discharge information, protecting some of our treasured UK waves as Sites of Special Surfing Interest, and on marine litter with extensive beach clean activity through the Motivocean Tour and the Barefoot Friendly tour rolling almost every month. Thanks for your support and I look forward to seeing you at one of our events this year. Finally, I am delighted to welcome Adam Beare to the team who joins us as Beach Clean & Volunteer Officer to over see the Motivocean Tour this spring. If you want to get more involved please drop him an email on [email protected] Stay stoked,

Our successful high profile Brown/Blue Flag campaign might just have broken the back of the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) issue. We’ve ensured Blue Flag beaches will now stay true to their criteria and will now inform the public when sewage is discharged into the sea. The ramifications from this successful campaign are still being felt throughout the water industry and SAS has been visiting water companies all over the UK to ensure they have the systems in place to warn you

pipeline | www.sas.org.uk

of sewage pollution entering the sea in 2011. After this prolonged and forceful media campaign highlighting the issue of CSO abuse, we are now on the brink of unveiling pioneering systems that will warn you of sewage spills allowing you to make informed decisions about using potentially polluted waters. And our newest campaign on the block, Protect Our Waves (POW), wasted no time in registering a significant victory in the Scottish Marine Bill. For the first time in the UK, waveriders and surfers now have specific legislation to protect our waves - surf spots, the surf itself and access to the surf. Thanks to the POW campaign, surfers and waveriders frequenting Scottish spots now have the appropriate platform to raise any concerns about negative impacts on these waves at the very earliest stage. This will come in very useful to safeguard some of the country’s best waves, and we need you to be vigilant, contacting SAS with any information on waves under threat. The Waves Are Resources (WAR) Report was released last summer, framing the intrinsic and economic value of waves. To waveriders the values are

obvious, but the WAR Report also details how and why waves should be recognised as valuable resources by non-surfers. Only once our precious waves’ true value to the whole community is understood can we begin to ensure they are given the level of protection they deserve. The WAR Report is being actively promoted to planners across the UK, at all levels of Government, and complements SAS’s credible body of scientific reports. All of SAS’s reports are available at www.sas.org.uk. You can find out more about 2010’s successes and challenges, including the Return To Offender campaign influencing the world’s biggest company on the SAS website. Even with the many victories SAS has achieved since 1990, we still have a daunting task in helping protect the UK’s coastline. But we will continue to rise to the challenge in 2011 and beyond. Your steadfast support is an inspiration for the whole team, filling us with the drive, passion and enthusiasm to take on the world, one polluter at a time.

The carrot and the stick are our 2 greatest campaigning tools. Ask any water company and they will tell you how accomplished we are at wielding the stick! But the carrot is an equally powerful tool to provide environmental improvements for our precious surf spots. The last few years the stick has inflicted deep, embarrassing wounds to water companies all over the UK by repeatedly exposing their Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) abuse on primetime current affairs TV programmes and across the front pages of national newspapers. This tactic has been successful in persuading water companies to do more than is legally required of them. Thanks to this, water companies all over the UK are now committing to share information with us when their CSOs discharge raw sewage, in real time. We in turn will share this with you so you can make informed decisions about using potentially polluted waters. pipeline | www.sas.org.uk

This information will also expose CSOs that urgently require more investment to reduce their impact on the environment and your bathing waters. We are now ready to employ the carrot as a campaign tool. Working with progressive water companies, we will highlight their good work and willingness to share information on sewage spills. So a big shout out to South West Water who are leading the pack with their commitment and attitude to providing SAS with the information on CSO sewage spills. They are closely followed by Welsh Water and Yorkshire Water and hopefully, soon, Southern Water. And no, this doesn’t mean that we’ll stop using the stick with water companies where necessary. Rest assured, we always place your best interests at the heart of everything we do. Just as water companies have their shareholders’ best interests

Marine planning, The Journey STarTS STar T TS here. Tar After several SAS actions and some fantastic local grass roots activism we have been able to persuade the Environment Agency to review the license allowing Anglian Water to reduce sewage treatment from October to May at the increasing popular surf and kite surfing spots Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe. This is just the first step to full year round sewage treatment. We will need to prove that there is a water sports community using the sea during this period. So contact [email protected] if you use the sea at Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe between October and May and together we can bring an end to this archaic and outdated practice. Surfers and waveriders deserve year round protection!

dictating their actions. We’ve been able to position the CSO issue so these interests overlap. We are forging new relationships and working towards a shared goal. This Spring we will unveil a multilayered online system that will allow you to check where your local CSOs are and what other pollution sources could be reducing water quality or damaging the coastline in your area. But the truly exciting feature will be real-time CSO sewage discharge warnings. This is unprecedented and will bring pollution related beach information into the 21st century, leading the world in providing an improved beach experience. Interestingly, as we go to press we have seen that Jeffrey’s Bay in South Africa has been stripped of its Blue Flag due to sewage discharges. Exciting times as SAS continue to provide sustainable solutions where others only see problems... 07

Marine Planning, The Journey Starts Here. What is marine planning? We see it as a fantastic opportunity to get surf and water sports areas recognised, designated and protected for generations to come. You’ll be forgiven if this is the first time you’ve come across the term ‘marine planning’. But I’m pretty sure that, if you had to hazard a guess as to what marine planning entailed, you wouldn’t be far off. Marine planning, in its simplest form, will be a marine version of our land-based planning systems. Sounds obvious doesn’t it? But it might surprise you to learn that planning for the marine environment is ‘nautical miles’ behind equivalent land-based planning systems. But the good news is that SAS is involved from the very start of the process. The newly formed Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is responsible for developing marine plans for the entire UK waters. The MMO told us that marine planning will aim to adopt an integrated and strategic approach to managing the use of the sea in the most sustainable and balanced way. Translating their David Brent-isms uncovers a very useful system that we can use to help protect important stretches of coastline. If we can get

pipeline | www.sas.org.uk

areas important to surfers, kitesurfers, windsurfers, kayakers and every other conceivable waverider designated within this marine planning process, we will become an integral part of a legitimate process, requiring any potential developer/polluter to investigate and justify any impact on our wave, water or beach resource.

“We Need our troops on the ground (you!)

to relay the vital intel on your surf spots”

I hope you too can see the importance of being involved. This will be a long-term engagement taking several years to cover the entire UK coast. The area the MMO is considering for the first two marine plans is on the East coast, from Flamborough Head to Felixtowe, and will take in 6000 square kilometres of sea. From April this year, the MMO will run a two year stakeholder engagement programme. The MMO defines a stakeholder as “people, individuals and businesses with an interest in the marine area”. Assuming you’ve read this far, I think you’ll probably be a stakeholder, if not for this zone, then for future zones. Stakeholders will be required to share their knowledge of sites of special surfing interest and who’s using the marine environment and for which activities. This is where, with your input, we get to make sure our playground, precious waves and important areas around the coast are represented on the map. We will promote the opportunities to engage with the process and guide you towards the most convenient method of contributing. We’ve already started the process with the MMO, having held meetings with their Chef Exec and Chairman, and delivered an SAS presentation to all their staff at the MMO HQ in Newcastle. And in January we took our own Lord Kitchener to an MMO workshop. The workshop concentrated on how the MMO should engage with our members and other stakeholders. In his stylish WWI military outfit SAS’s Lord Kitchener worked with the more traditional group of suits. Our classic SAS style ensured we got everyone’s full attention enabling us to impress upon the group the importance of consulting SAS. The operation was of course carried out with military precision... ATTENTION! We need our troops on the ground (you!) to relay the vital intel on your surf spots. If you use the coast from Flamborough Head to Flexistowe fill in your details on the marine planning page on www.sas.org.uk under the POW campaign. This is just the start, but a strong start will ensure we’re best placed to designate and protect large areas of important coastline.

Although the Protect Our Waves (POW) campaign was only launched in 2009, we’ve been protecting waves from one threat or another since our inception 21 years ago. But the POW campaign gives us the structure to legitimately expand our remit, concentrating on wave protection like never before. Using our years of campaign experience the POW campaign identified the most potent and widespread threats to waves around the UK. These include threats from over zealous onshore and offshore developments, surfer’s and waverider’s right of access and of course, environmental impacts. Since 2009 the POW campaign has been incredibly active and has already been quoted by cabinet ministers in the Scottish Parliament, produced and disseminated 2 valuable scientific reports, rolled out multiple grass roots campaign actions and most importantly produced legislation that can specifically protect waves - a first for the UK! With the support of Rip Curl Planet, the strategy for 2011 will build on all of the above and ensure that protecting waves and recognizing potential threats is cemented in the consciousness of all waveriders. Over the next 18 months we will be promoting and

that wave and how the POW campaign is tackling the issue. But most importantly, the posters will detail exactly how you can actively help Protect Our Waves. So make sure your SAS membership is up to date as these posters will look amazing and they’ll be a great tool to help you protect waves.

• The North East (Staithes) – Chronic sewage issues still mean surfing at this fantastic spot could represent a serious risk to your health. • Broad Bench – Kimmeridge Bay, South Coast – we will continue to work on increasing access to this amazing reef break, one of the best in the UK, to ensure surfers and wave riders can enjoy the full benefits of the spot. Carve surf magazine are helping us increase the profile of POW issues by running exclusive features throughout the year on these and other threatened waves around the UK. As a special bonus for SAS members, the next four Pipelines will include a big pullout poster, illustrating these threatened perfect UK waves unloading their powerful energy onto our shore. The poster will outline the nature of the threat facing

removed hundreds of bags of marine litter, totalling many tonnes of unsightly and dangerous waste, from our beautiful and unique coastline. We hope to achieve even more over the coming months” Since 1994, the volume of marine litter on UK beaches has increased by 121%* and SAS is helping combat this tide line of trash through its beach cleans and ongoing environmental campaigns. This year’s tour will also promote ‘mini-campaign actions’ that our volunteers can take away with them. We’ll be distributing ‘Think Before You Flush’ stickers and ‘No Butts On The Beach’ stickers, which can be used as helpful reminders to people of ways to reduce marine litter. For more on these campaigns please see the marine litter section on our website.

We need your SupporT! Volunteers join us for 2-3 hours to learn more about the marine environment and help clean up local beaches. Our volunteers make a big impact at surf spots across the country, and you will be take direct environmental action alongside many like-minded surfers, water users, wave riders and other people who just love the coast. Volunteers are rewarded with refreshments on the day, exclusive volunteering certificates, SAS goodies and surf and other water sports lessons/experiences**. SAS speakers available for your school, university or business Surfers Against Sewage has for many years delivered an educational programme, through our campaign tours, beach clean initiatives, educational talks and the numerous digital and print resources we’ve produced, some even following the national schools syllabus. So, as an organisation, we have a long history of educating, in informal and formal settings, helping all ages to better understand the marine and coastal environment, and hopefully inspiring new generations of campaigners and environmental activists. In 2010 SAS delivered an unprecedented level of educational reach in schools, universities and higher education institutes but we also reached a significant new audience at outside events such as at surf contests and beach cleans. SAS’s environmental talks were delivered to all age groups from primary school level through to university students. The SAS educational programme focuses on current campaign areas from climate change and marine litter through to the protection of the recreational wave resource. The presentation highlights the environmental problems and promotes the sustainable achievable solutions that SAS currently calls for in reducing coastal and marine degradation nationwide. We outline what SAS is doing nationally and locally, along with effective examples of SAS using science at the heart of its campaigns to solve issues affecting the UK’s unique coastline. Educational sessions also provide tangible actions that can be taken by the audience in tackling marine pollution along with, at times, complementing the cross curricular syllabus’ at the primary and secondary levels. In 2011 and 2012, we will be working closely with the Quiksilver Foundation to reach out to an even greater number of schools and universities. In June, we will be holding a flagship education event to launch this collaboration, which will be attended by SAS ambassadors, Quiksilver Pro Surfers and the SAS campaign team. If you’d like to organise an SAS talk at your school, university, business or organisation, please do get in touch on 01872 553 001 or email pipeline | www.sas.org.uk

[email protected]. We can also send your school, business or university copies of SAS’s marine litter guides, scientific reports and other materials as part of this programme. Dominic Ferris, SAS campaigner, surfer and educator: “Through our educational programme we hope to share the beauty and complexity of our marine environments with the whole student community, sharing SAS’s 21-years worth of campaigning experience and supporting people in building their personal interest and understanding of our beautiful and fragile coastline. We want to give them the inspiration and tools needed to help protect their beloved beaches. Our campaigns and presentations are based on hard scientific facts and sustainable, achievable solutions to the problems that the UK’s coastal waters face. We also know that nobody likes to be preached at by boring, stuffy types who take themselves far too seriously, so as surfers and water users ourselves, we work our little wetsuit socks off to make our educational days as fun and engaging as possible.”

From school talks to public meetings, SAS can provide YOU with a speaker. Talks include a powerpoint presentation, video clips and SAS promo materials. We can adapt the length of the talk to your schedule, but talks tend to last 1 hour and also available is a talk through video conferencing.

martin poyntz-roberts Midlands SAS Rep I am a BBC producer, working in both radio for Radio 4 and BBC television programmes, for BBC’s Bafta winning series Coast and BBC1’s Countryfile programme. I have always been involved in programmes and issues that tackle environmental issues and in particular, pollution. My aim is to raise awareness of SAS campaigns through the media and political channels. I am at my happiest when I am attempting to not drown in the sea. Over the past couple of years I have helped to raise the profile of SAS in the national media – Radio 4, BBC1 etc, taken part in The Wave climate change march, helped out with beach cleans for the 20th Anniversary and more. Specific Environmental interests – I am obsessed with poo. I recently ran a full reporter piece talking about cowpats. My main interest is the lack of suitable facilities to deal with the amount of sewage that is produced in the UK – the water companies’ inability to deal with the amount of waste, coupled with their disinterest in solving the problem. There is no reason, in 2010, for raw sewage to find its way into the sea and onto beaches. My quiver is polystyrene, natch. I am the only SAS rep who is literally putting the sewage into surfing – i.e. I am shit. I want to make the government and the water companies stop polluting the sea with sewage and plastic. Simple as that. pipeline | www.sas.org.uk

With the next issue of Pipeline we’ll be sending all our members an exclusive booklet with details for all Surfers Against Sewage Regional Reps. The booklet will also contain information and a framework for members to record and report coastal pollution affecting their local spot. We have a fantastic group of ambassadors in most of the key surf and water sports locations around the country and will be adding to the team later this year (cv’s and cover email to [email protected] if you’re interested!). They all contribute in their own way, from organising local volunteers for beach cleans and campaign actions, through to advising us on campaign policy or media work, and it makes a huge difference to SAS, our members and most importantly the marine environment. Our first campaign t-shirt of the year highlights the ongoing battle for access to one of the UK’s finest breaks at Broadbench. This wave is on the boundary of an MOD firing range, however SAS believe a compromise can be reached, ensuring waveriders

have 100% access to Broadbench without impacting on the MoD’s full use of the firing range. By buying the t-shirt you’ll be helping support this and other Protect Our Waves campaigns throughout 2011. www.sas.org.uk/shop 21
