YEAR 6 RESIDENTIAL AUTUMN 2017 As I'm sure you've heard, the Year 6 children returned from their residential trip, full of exciting stories about staying away from home and completing amazing outdoor challenges. Well, now it's time for the Year 5 children to start looking ahead to their turn. Next year's Year 6 residential will take place during the first half term of the year, so we will need to start booking places before the end of this term. Mr. Henson will be hosting a meeting next week about the trip with all the information you will need. There will be two meeting times to try to make it as easy as possible for you to attend with your children so that you can get excited together. Thursday 10th November at 8:30am in the school hall Thursday 10th November at 5:30pm in the school hall.
PLEASE LEND US YOUR VIEW I would like to ask parents who have not yet completed Parent View in this academic year, 2016/2017, to support us by logging onto Parent View and completing the electronic questionnaire. Parent View gives you the chance to tell us and Ofsted what you think about our school. It asks for your opinion on 12 aspects of your child’s school, from the quality of teaching to dealing with bullying and poor behaviour. If you have completed Parent View in previous years, please complete it again to reflect your current feelings. Help completing Parent View You can complete the survey by logging on to: http://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/ or by clicking on the icon on our website http://www.chapelendacademy.org/ A screencast/short video demonstrating how to register and complete a survey on Parent View is available if you click on ‘How to use Parent View’. Alternatively; please ask a member of staff to help you. The more parents who complete it, the more helpful the survey will be. Thank you in advance for your time. Yours truly, James Kenyon Headteacher

YEAR 3 NEWS This week in Year 3, we have started exploring legends in our English work. A legend usually includes an element of truth, or is based on historic facts, but with ‘mythical qualities’. Legends usually involved heroic characters or fantastic places and often represent the beliefs of the culture from which they originate. We read the legend of George and the Dragon and one of the Robin Hood stories. We then looked at the features of a legend so that we could write our own version of a legend in a couple of weeks’ time. Year 3 has also been sent home with flu jab letters. Please read the letter, complete and return it by Monday 7th November. Many thanks. YEAR 4 NEWS This week, we have been writing haiku, which are traditional Japanese poems with a very special structure based on the number of syllables in each line. This poem is an example of a haiku, written by a famous poet Japanese poet named Natsume Soseki. A haiku consists of three lines with a 5-7-5 syllable pattern. The first line of the haiku has five syllables, the second, seven syllables and the third, Cats eyes shine so bright five. Following this structure, In the dark they look creepy we wrote our own haiku based Yet still they are cute! on summer and other themes such as pets and sweets!
Over the wintry forest, winds howl in rage with no leaves to blow.
Here is an example by Maram Amraoui, 4TA. YEAR 5 NEWS Year 5 has had a fantastic first week back at school. We have started our brand new IPC topic Mission to Mars which links in perfectly with our Science topic Earth and Space. The teachers have been so impressed with the children’s knowledge – we have some budding astronomers in Year 5 already! We kicked off our topic with a lovely art activity where the children used different art materials to depict their understanding of our solar system. The children and teachers alike cannot wait to get stuck into the topic, and we are all particularly excited about our trip to the Planetarium. YEAR 6 NEWS In Year 6 this week, we have started reading our new novel for this half term, Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian. The story is set during World War II and features a boy who is evacuated from Blitz-hit London to the countryside. The children have been learning a little bit about the lives of evacuees and practising their reading skills. We have concluded our Murder Mystery Investigation in Science and used the Explain Everything app on the iPads to describe some of the key scientific processes we used to solve the mystery. Unfortunately, the finger of suspicion has pointed towards several members of the Year 6 teaching staff! The jury is still out...
