APPROVED MASS SETTINGS In 2010 the Bishops approved the: 1. Roman Missal Chant Mass (New) by ICEL. 2. Mews Mass (New) also known as Mass of St Theresa by Douglas Mews. The Bishops have now approved: 3. Celtic Mass (Revised) by Christopher Walker. 4. Heritage Mass (Revised) by Owen Alstott. 5. Mass of Creation (Revised) by Marty Haugen. 6. Mass of St Francis (New) by Paul Taylor. 7. Mass of Glory and Praise (Revised) by Paul Mason.

Ø

LOCAL COMPOSITIONS – MASS SETTINGS The Bishops also intend reserving places for a further three New Zealand compositions: 8. local composition. 9. local composition. 10. local composition. To date the National Liturgy Office has received ten local compositions. These are presently being reviewed. Once this is completed, three will be recommended to the Bishops for approval and be communicated to the Catholic community.

DESCRIPTION OF MASS SETTINGS 1. Roman Missal Chant Mass (New) by ICEL. These are the official chants included in the Roman Missal. 2. Mews Mass (New) also known as Mass of St Theresa by Douglas Mews. Douglas is a well-known local Catholic musician and composer. This new composition is especially suited for organ. This setting will be accessible for parishes and will be easily taught. This setting requires a degree of skill on the part of the organist. Mews Mass (New) will have appeal for parishes. 3. Celtic Mass (Revised) by Christopher Walker. Christopher Walker is an English musician and composer. The original edition of this Mass setting was composed for the old Mass texts. He has released this revised edition of the Celtic Mass.

Many parishes and schools already know the original setting. Adapting to the revised setting will be easy. Celtic Mass (Revised) will have appeal for parishes and schools. 4. Heritage Mass (Revised) by Owen Alstott. Owen Alstott also hails from England. The original edition of the Heritage Mass was composed in 1976. The Heritage Mass (Revised) was published in January 2011. Some parishes have used the original setting with great success. Adapting to the revised setting will be easy. Heritage Mass (Revised) will have appeal for parishes. 5. Mass of Creation (Revised) by Marty Haugen. Marty Haugen’s Mass of Creation is the most widely used Mass setting in New Zealand. Haugen has revised this popular setting for the new Mass texts. While there are few/no changes in the Holy, Holy and the Great Amen, the Lamb of God has been revised. The challenge for musicians and assemblies will be the Gloria – it will require careful teaching. You may consider having the assembly sing the refrain only with a cantor to sing the verses. Mass of Creation (Revised) will have appeal for parishes and schools. 6. Mass of St Francis (New) by Paul Taylor. “This new composition by Paul Taylor is a very accessible setting which will be readily learnt by congregations and sits easily under the fingers of organist or pianist. Guitarists will not have too much trouble with the chords…The simplicity and directness if this setting make it eminently suitable for parish use, particularly where musical resources are limited” (review excerpt from Summit, February 2011). Mass of St Francis (New) will have appeal for parishes. 7. Mass of Glory and Praise (Revised) by Paul Mason. “Paul Mason’s Mass of Glory and Praise was written with young people in mind and shows the influence of the ‘rock’ idiom. Although it may be accompanied simply by keyboard and/or guitar, parts provided for choir and a variety of wind, brass and stringed instruments can be used according to the resources of the parish” (review excerpt from Summit, February 2011). Mass of Glory and Praise (Revised) will have appeal for parishes, schools and youth groups.

A NOTE ON COPYRIGHT The observance of copyright requirements and regulations is important. It is illegal to use any means to duplicate musical scores and/or audio files. This is also a matter of justice: for many composers, the sale of their work is their livelihood. The making of illegal copies cheats the composer of revenue that is rightly theirs. In respect of the approved Mass settings for use in New Zealand, all are covered by copyright. Two Mass settings [Roman Missal Chant Mass (New) by ICEL and Mews Mass (New) also known as Mass of St Theresa by Douglas Mews] are being made free of charge. Those settings distributed through Pleroma Christian Supplies come also with copyright licences. These are the regulations v For parishes/ and schools: if you buy a musical setting and/or audio files these may not be duplicated. If you require a number of copies for musicians you are required to purchase the required number. v

If you have choirs: many of the publishers provide octavos (these can be ordered through Pleroma Christian Supplies). The octavos are cheaper than purchasing a number of full scores.

v

For music groups: you will need to purchase a copy for each musician and singer. The guitar score is cheaper than a full score. The assembly score does not have the guitar chords just the melody line and lyrics; it is cheaper than the guitar score and could easily be used for singers (the assembly scores can be ordered through Pleroma Christian Supplies).

v

For parishes/ and schools: if you use a data projector and/or an OHP you are required to hold a copyright licence. These can be purchased through copyright agents (for further information see below).

v

Schools must have their own copyright licence, i. e. they may not use the parish licence.

Please note v These copyright regulations have always been in place.

      Update

v

If you have not been observing copyright regulations, now is the time to start.

v

If you need assistance with this please check the NLO website for further information.

v

Obviously, to fulfil copyright regulations will require parishes and schools to make sufficient funds available. Music Directors, musicians, choirs and music groups may need to discuss these issues with their respective parish and school authorities.

IN CONCLUSION The Bishops are aware that for some parishes and schools, the availability of only two approved Mass settings has been challenging. They hope that the immediate availability of five more approved Mass settings will assist music directors, musicians and liturgy groups. As the Bishops approve the three new Mass settings from local composers, these too will become available. If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
