THE BEST OF CROATIA $3,789.00

Sept. 14 – Sept. 25, 2016

You will find Croatia a country with something for everyone. Here you will find a beautiful coastline, classic architecture, a rich history, and great food. The Croatians are a friendly and proud people with strong traditions. Day 1 Depart USA (Sept.14) Air Travel arrangements provided by Agent. Day 2 (D) –Sept.15 - ZAGREB Arrive in Zagreb. Welcome to Croatia. Our guide will greet group and provide transfer to hotel near the city center. Due to possible late arrival there will be no activities scheduled for this day. Day 3 (B) – SEP 16 - ZAGREB Buffet breakfast at hotel in Zagreb. After breakfast our guide will meet you in the hotel lobby and take you on a 2.0 hour walking tour of Zagreb old town and city center where most of attractions are located. We will visit Zagreb Cathedral constructed by the same architect that constructed Vienna’s St. Stephen Cathedral. Zagreb, being so many centuries under Austrian ruling is very much influenced by Austrian and Habsburg’s culture in every respect. ZAGREB in fact is nicknamed "Little Vienna.” We will explore this vibrant city and visit its major historical and cultural points of interest within walking distance, and we’ll take the funicular to Gornji Grad (Upper Town). Actually, although very steep, this is the shortest funicular ride in the world at only about 100 meters. After city tour balance of day until dinner is free. DINNER: Welcome Dinner will be at “Stari Puntijar” a popular local restaurant where you will dine on local specialties and taste local wines. As central European culture and cuisine influence this part of Croatia, the main food staple here is meat. Pre-set menu with variety of different foods will be served. Local wines are also similar to central European (German, Austrian and Hungarian) brands, with “Riesling”, “Traminer” and “Grashevina” among the most popular. Dinner at Stari Puntijar will include visit to largest cookbook library in Europe, ceremonial opening of Champagne with a sword and wine tasting and wine pairing during dinner. After dinner return to hotel for overnight. Day 4 (B) –SEP 17 - ZAGREB-OPATIJA-ROVINJ (approx. 185 mi/4.0 h. driving time) Following breakfast we will check out from hotel in Zagreb and drive to Opatija (pron. oh-pa-tee-yah). Drive to Opatija is less than 2 hours and then after brief stop and sightseeing of Opatija we will continue on to Pula (1.0 h.) for a brief sightseeing of Roman Amphitheater. After Pula we continue (45 min.) and end up today’s journey in Rovinj (pron. rohveen) in the province of Istria (a peninsula in the northern Adriatic, just south of Trieste and across from Venice, Italy). OPATIJA is probably the most charming and prettiest seaside resort town in the entire Adriatic. Historically, it was the winter playground of the Habsburgs and Austro-Hungarian nobility. Anyone who was someone in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries in the Old Austro-Hungarian Empire spent their winters in Opatija. Live concerts, raucous parties and entertainment were unprecedented here. Numerous villas, mansions and hotels built at that time for Habsburg nobility, updated with modern standards but still with original architectural structure, accommodate the thousands of visitors who now flock to this resort town every year. We will stop here for a brief coffee break and drive-through sightseeing before proceeding to Rovinj. PULA (pron. poo-lah) is the site of the best-preserved Roman amphitheater in the world. Since this part of Croatia was integral part of the old Roman Empire and then later part of Venetian Republic, many remnants and traces of Roman and Venetian culture and influence can be found here.

ROVINJ claims to be the most beautiful Venetian-style Mediterranean town. It is truly a beautiful little town with narrow cobblestone streets intersecting like a spider web while winding around the hill and Sta. Euphemia Cathedral. Venetians established the town in the late 12th century. Today it is considered among the most desired tourist destinations in Europe. In relatively recent years, Rovinj has become a popular artist colony. Many galleries and art studios are found hidden along its tiny streets and courtyards. Virtually every available space is utilized. Dotted along the way are small cafes that offer visitors exceptional local and regional food, featuring fresh locally caught fish and excellent Istrian wines. Actually the entire town might be described as an expanded cafe-bistro-restaurant, since anywhere one walks, tables and chairs entice visitors to sit, relax and at the least order some delicious gelato or coffee. Accommodation at Hotel Resort Amarin on the beach, 5-minute boat ride to Rovinj city center and Old Town. Boat shuttle operates every 2 hours and there is also bus shuttle. A taxi fare to/from the city should be around 10 Euros Day 5 (B) – SEP 18 - ROVINJ Entire day free in Rovinj-No activities scheduled for this day. Day 6 (B, L) –SEP 19 - ROVINJ-MOTOVUN-PLITVICE LAKES After breakfast, we will check out from hotel in Rovinj and board our bus toward Central Istria and the city of Motovun. Motovun and central Istria area resembles very much to Tuscany in Italy and thus is appropriately nicknamed "The Croatian Tuscany." Small, fortified villages are perched on top of little hills, surrounded by vineyards, orchards and olive groves. MOTOVUN is located in the heart of truffle-growing region. We will journey to the town of Motovun, walk its steep, cobblestone streets and stop at some of many specialty boutique stores offering various local products including truffle products, olive oils and local wines. Motovun provides 360 degrees spectacular view of the entire area. Motovun is also the birthplace of the famous Indy-car driver, Mario Andretti. Highlight of this excursion will be stop at one of many family ran truffle hunting lodges and village retreats in Central Istria. This area that we will be visiting today is the newest truffle capital of the world and home to the biggest white truffle ever found anywhere, was found here in 1999. While the region’s fertile land yields many different crops, white truffles are the most prized. Appropriately named “white gold,” the average market rate for one pound is about $1,500. We will try our luck in finding truffles by taking “truffle safari” with professional truffle hunters and their truffle-sniffing dogs. Since truffles grow under surface of earth, they are not detectable to by humans. But because they emit characteristic smell, some dogs or pigs can be trained to sniff and detect them. We will see exactly how it is done by walking through thick woods with truffle hunter and her dogs. Interestingly, most of truffle hunters are female and female dogs are also the best truffle sniffers. Afterwards, we will have a true truffle lunch at family village retreat with tasting of local delicious wines. After lunch we continue to Motovun, the most picturesque little town perched on the top of a hill in central Istria. After visit to Motovun, we will hit the road toward Plitvice Lakes National Park (about 3.5 hours). Arrival in Plitvice is scheduled late afternoon/early evening. Check-in at hotel Jezero, walking distance to National park’s main gate. Overnight at hotel Jezero in Plitvice National Park. Day 7 (B, D) –SEP 20 - PLITVICE LAKES-(ZADAR)-SPLIT (approx. 262 mi/5.0 h. driving) Following breakfast at hotel in Plitvice (pron. pleet-vee-tzeh), we will enter Plitvice Lakes National Park. For several hours our guide will help us navigate this magnificent natural wonder a UNESCO protected natural monument. We will have lunch in one of restaurants in the park and then hit the road toward Split. Time permitting, we will stop at medieval town of Zadar and see many attractions and monuments in this city. Ston is the largest shellfish farm in southern Europe and we will visit one of those farms. We will take a boat ride and witness pulling out fresh oysters from the sea and will taste them right there on the boat. Delicious lunch (not included) will also be served on the boat (or restaurant owned by the family-ran farm). Ston is just over onehour drive from Dubrovnik and we will arrive there in early afternoon. Time permitting we will take a quick, 2.0 hour walking tour of this fascinating city as well as cable car ride to the top of Mt. Srdj overlooking the city. Dubrovnik, nicknamed the "Pearl of the Adriatic," is the most fascinating city in the region and one of the top destinations in Croatia; a “must stop” for every commercial cruise line operating in the Adriatic. The entire Old City has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserved with almost all of its original buildings. Its city wall, 15 ft. thick and over 25 ft. tall is topped by a 1.25-mile footpath. Enjoy unforgettable views as you walk above the city's red and orange-tiled roofs, observing from above, the city's narrow streets, which climb its hills, and the vestiges of local life, like laundry hung between thick-walled houses, flapping in the breeze. We will take a cable-car ride up to the top of the Dubrovnik hill for a breathtaking view of the city. Below, we will see crayon-colored boats in the harbor, nearby islands and the area's Riviera. Overnight in Dubrovnik, Hotel More Day 10 (B, D) – SEP 23 - DUBROVNIK -MONTENEGRO-DUBROVNIK (approx. 80 miles each way) After breakfast, we will go on a full-day excursion to the Montenegro Riviera, which will include a visit to the Bay of Kotor, Tivat, Porto Montenegro, Sveti Stefan, and Budva.
