NE1fm Online and Social Media Guidelines Version 2.0.1 - March 2012 Introduction The Internet is an important part of everyday life for most people today, and since the launch of NE1fm in June 2007, it has grown to play an increasingly important role in the project's operation. Social media is indispensable to much of the community. As such, it is important for NE1fm to fully utilise the power of online outlets.

In order for NE1fm to be able to utilise the Internet effectively, our volunteers must know what is expected of them online, both when directly representing the project and indirectly. As such, the NE1fm Online and Social Media Guidelines have been created, a set of regulations and procedures for all volunteers when using the Internet.

It is important to abide by these Guidelines at all times - Some of the most serious offences could risk the suspension of your involvement in the project.

Acceptable Online Behaviour 

Volunteers should not air internal matters on any social mediums. This includes private Facebook and protected Twitter accounts. This is especially true for any grievances or 'dirty laundry' - If you have an issue, it should be addressed privately within the project. For example, a Facebook status declaring your annoyance at a volunteer or dislike of a show would not be acceptable under any circumstances. -1-

Volunteers should not list CBIT or NE1fm 102.5 as their employer. You are free to list yourself as part of NE1fm 102.5 on services such as Facebook and LinkedIn, but you should not give the impression that you are paid for your time.

If you partake in discussions on media forums such as Digital Spy or Media UK and discuss NE1fm 102.5 or radio in the area, ensure that you make it clear that you are representing your personal views and not those of the project.

At no time should you endorse the illegal file-sharing of music or other media via any online medium. This includes private Facebook and protected Twitter accounts.

In any environment where you could be seen as a representative of NE1fm 102.5 online, ensure that you behave professionally and civilly, and be careful not to bring the project in to any form of disrepute at any time.

Referencing the Internet and Social Media On-Air 

When promoting getting in touch via e-mail on-air, it should be done by pointing listeners to the "Contact the Studio" page on the NE1fm.net website, and not by promoting [email protected].

Additionally, while you can mention getting in touch during the week via your personal NE1fm e-mail address, you should not use it as a contact method during your show. Only use the "Contact the Studio" page while on-air.

You should only reference e-mail accounts suffixed @ne1fm.net on-air. Do not promote e-mail addresses such as @gmail.com, @hotmail.com and @yahoo.co.uk. If you do not have an @ne1fm.net account, e-mail [email protected] and one can be set up for you.

You are welcome to promote your show's Facebook and your personal and show Twitter accounts during your show, however you should take care to do this sparingly and not to the detriment of other contact methods.

If you mention the station website during your show, make sure that you correctly identify it as NE1fm.net, and not NE1fm.com, which is an old website that is no longer under our control.

-2-

Facebook Pages 

All presenters and shows on the NE1fm schedule are welcome to create a Facebook Page for their show. You do not need express permission to do this, although you should e-mail [email protected] so that it can added to the website.

New pages should format NE1fm correctly. We may ask that Pages that refer to us as NE1FM or NE1 FM are corrected or taken down, and as you cannot change the name after more than 100 likes (as of March 2012), you should take extra care with this when creating a page.

Be careful what you post to a Page. While it is not required that a Page only feature content directly related to the show it covers, it should not become a personal Facebook account. You are representing the project whenever you own a Page for a show on the station.

If you wouldn't be allowed to say it on-air, don't say it on the Page! This includes but is not limited to excessive profanity and heavily biased coverage of politics and religion.

In line with the "Acceptable Online Behaviour" section of these guidelines, at no time should you air internal matters and grievances via a Facebook Page.

If you present radio shows on other mediums such as online radio and wish to promote these via your Page also, you should seek permission to do this from the NE1fm Management team via [email protected].

At no time should rival radio stations and their broadcasts be promoted via your Facebook Page.

If your show becomes inactive, you will usually be able to keep your Page in case the show returns, although it should be used sparingly at this time and not used to promote any broadcasts elsewhere.

The NE1fm Management team reserves the right to ask a volunteer that they delete a Facebook Page at any time.

Shows that have a Facebook group instead of a Page are also bound by these guidelines.

-3-

Twitter Accounts for Shows 

All presenters are free to create a Twitter account that is specific to their show. This is different to an individual account used to promote broadcasts For example, Barry Wilson tweets at @eugenespeed2 and @AlternationNE1. @AlternationNE1 is the Twitter account for the show.

Twitter accounts for shows are bound by the same rules as Facebook Pages, particularly with regard to being careful with content in terms of profanity and the airing of matters internal to the project.

Re-tweets should be made with care. If the content of the tweet would be unacceptable if posted by yourself, you should not re-tweet it.

You should not excessively spam or beg for 'follows' on a show Twitter account.

Personal Facebook and Protected Twitter Accounts 

If you have a personal Twitter account that is unprotected, you are bound by both this section and the subsequent "Unprotected Personal Twitter Accounts" section of the guidelines.

Even on a private Facebook or Twitter account, you are a representative the project at all times. As such, you should take care to not use excessive profanity in your updates and posts, and should take care to not post content that could be perceived as racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise discriminatory.

The NE1fm Management team reserves the right to ask a volunteer to delete specific posts at any time.

Unprotected Personal Twitter Accounts 

This section refers to unprotected, public-to-all Twitter accounts. If your account is protected, refer to the above "Personal Facebook and Protected Twitter Accounts" section of the guidelines.

When you possess and use an unprotected Twitter account, you are acting as a public representative of NE1fm 102.5, even when the content is not related to us. As such, you should take care with what you tweet.

-4-

If you are planning on making political statements or are discussing anything potentially controversial on your account, you should add a disclaimer to your biography that the content of your tweets is "personal and not the views of NE1fm 102.5", or something similar, so long as it is made clear that your views do not directly represent us.

Rival radio stations and their broadcasts should not be promoted heavily on your Twitter account. If you are listening to a commercial or BBC show, it is acceptable to mention this on a personal level.

The NE1fm Management team reserves the right to ask a volunteer to add a disclaimer to their account or delete specific tweets at any time.

NE1fm 102.5 on Twitter 

NE1fm 102.5 is represented on Twitter at @NE1fmofficial. Only reference this account - The account at @NE1fm is not under our control. Our official hashtag is #NE1fm, which you are welcome and recommended to use.

Show Profiles on MySpace and Google+ 

If you maintain a profile for your show on MySpace or Google+, you should ensure that it meets the same criteria described for Facebook Pages earlier in this documentation.

Show Websites 

You are welcome to maintain a website for your show without permission. The content should roughly meet the same guidelines as described for Facebook Pages earlier in this documentation.

You are welcome to embed or link to the online stream on your website, but you should always promote listening via the listen links or web player on NE1fm.net.

Listen Again and Podcasting 

NE1fm 102.5 does not have a Podcasting Licence. This means that we are not licenced to re-produce copyrighted material online on-demand, and that it

-5-

is a violation of our licence to do so. As such, special care should be taken when making a show available to listen to again. 

If a service covers us legally in terms of royalties, it is acceptable to make a full show available to listen to there. The best known such service that does this is Mixcloud, which has been used by some of our shows in the past.

Uncopyrighted spoken word clips, such as interviews by yourself, can be distributed online or placed in to podcasts without concern.

If you are unsure whether your re-production or podcast would meet our licensing requirements, ask a member of the NE1fm Management team before you make it available online.

Presenting Online Radio 

Presenters are free to broadcast on online radio stations in addition to their NE1fm show, but only if the online station is fully licenced. In the United Kingdom, this means a full online broadcast licence with both MCPS/PRS and PPL. Usually you can tell if a station is licenced as such by the presence of both logos on the station website.

Broadcasting on unlicenced online radio is a serious offence, and will usually lead to the instant termination of your show on NE1fm 102.5.

You should not promote online shows via your social media presences for the NE1fm show unless you have express permission to do so from the NE1fm Management team.

At no time should you promote your online broadcasts on-air on NE1fm 102.5.

The NE1fm 102.5 Logo 

On any online presences, you should only use the official NE1fm station logo, and not any custom station logo or generic text.

The station logo should not be recoloured to white, black or any other colour at any time.

If you have any questions or would like clarification on anything covered in this document, feel free to e-mail [email protected] or ask a member of the NE1fm Management team. Version 2.0.1 - March 2012
