NAGS Academy & Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) 2014 - 15

NAGS Academy and Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) Update – 2015-16 What is NAGS Academy? Athletes invited to NAGS Academy will benefit from high quality technical and tactical coaching led by England Hockey Talent Development Coaches at their nearest subregional coaching centres for 14 evening sessions from the end of November - June 2016. Please refer to the flow diagram above to see if you qualify. What is AASE? AASE stands for Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence. A government funded apprenticeship scheme designed to directly measure the athletes’ ability to plan, apply and evaluate their development in the appropriate aspects of Hockey. The AASE programme will cover a range of modules: - Strength & Conditioning, Psychology, Nutrition, Media and Communication Skills, Career Development, Lifestyle Management and more. The portfolios are to be completed during the residential camps. The hockey elements are delivered both at AASE camps and through the NAGS Academy sub-regional centres. Upon completion of AASE, athletes will receive NVQ certification. Please refer to the attached flow diagram to see if you qualify. Who delivers the AASE Programme? The AASE programme is run in partnership between England Hockey and Loughborough College. Loughborough College already work with 13 National Governing Bodies, developing a range of bespoke delivery models across those sports. In February 2013 Loughborough College received ‘Outstanding’ grading from OFSTED. What level of commitment is going to be required from selected AASE athletes? Athletes will be expected to attend the national camps and NAGS Academy coaching sessions and complete a small amount of portfolio work/preparation work outside of camps. Athletes will also have a progress review (45 minute phone call) every 7 weeks with their dedicated Loughborough College tutor. Venues for the NAGS Academy sessions will be released in due course - dates are listed below. Who is eligible for the AASE Programme? Athletes selected to attend or listed as non-travelling reserve for JRPC Tier 2 (HIPAC or Futures Cup) and in an Academic Year 12, will be invited to enrol on the AASE programme. *Please note: NAGS Squad athletes will not be eligible for AASE but deselected athletes at further assessment camp in Year 12 will be required to enrol on AASE if they want to attend the NAGS Academy.

NAGS Academy and Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) Update – 2015-16 What happens if I am in Year 11 but invited to U17 HIPAC? You will not be eligible for AASE until next year, but you will be invited to attend the NAGS Academy. Are both the NAGS Academy/ AASE programme going to run every year? Yes, the NAGS Academy and AASE Programme will run each year. What role does the athlete’s educational institution play? England Hockey asks that educational institutions are understanding and supportive of these talented athletes commitment to the NAGS Academy and AASE programme. These athletes have been selected on their hockey ability to date and this is the next step in their developmental journey. Dates of camps and training sessions are listed below. We recommend that you ask athletes for a copy of their programmes. How can boarding schools support their NAGS Academy and AASE athletes? NAGS Academy athletes are expected to attend all NAGS Academy training sessions. Athletes on the AASE programme will attend national camps in addition to the NAGS Academy sessions. England Hockey asks that you are as accommodating as possible with supporting the logistical arrangements during term time for these athletes. Outside of term dates, can boarders access NAGS Academy centres nearest to their home? Athletes are invited to attend the nearest NAGS Academy centre to their home address, for sessions that fall outside of term time. To enable a switch of centre during holiday time, athletes should inform their NAGS Academy coach of any dates this may impact upon during the first NAGS Academy session. Will the AASE programme impact the athletes’ academic studies? The AASE programme will fit alongside athletes’ academic studies and will not involve any exams. The programme requires athletes to complete a portfolio that will be completed during the camps. Part of the programme covers lifestyle management aiming to support athletes with their commitments and teach them effective time management.

NAGS Academy and Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) Update – 2015-16 Who will be responsible for preventing overplaying? As well as clearly defined priorities in the centralised calendar which help to limit overplaying, a partnership will be engendered between athletes and their NAGS Academy coach, so that, following a set of principles, the risk of overplaying is minimised. Athletes will be expected to take greater responsibility for communicating training priorities to club and school coaches but only with the appropriate level of support from NAGS Academy coaches. Do the AASE qualifications carry UCAS points? YES – Enrolling in October 2015 will receive 85 UCAS points upon completion of the AASE Programme Will the AASE training camps count towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award? No, athletes undertaking the D of E will not be able to use AASE to fulfil part of their award. Which days will the NAGS Academy sub-regional coaching sessions be held? NAGS Academy will take place on Monday evenings. Note that these sessions will also include NAGS U16 and U18 athletes. Will NAGS Academy athletes still be able to play club hockey? Yes, we would actively encourage all athletes to continue playing club hockey. What happens if a Year 12 athlete attends HIPAC, does not make the NAGS further assessment camp and chooses not to enrol onto AASE? These athletes will not be eligible to attend the NAGS Academy centres and will have to attend JAC in order to be eligible for nomination to JRPC the following year. Do non NAGS Academy athletes have to attend JAC? Yes. If an athlete has the opportunity but chooses not to attend NAGS Academy sessions, they must attend JAC in order to be eligible for selection to JRPC again next year and will go straight into the JAC training squad. Athletes who drop out of AASE/NAGS Academy mid-programme may be at risk of being ineligible for JRPC the following year.

NAGS Academy and Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) Update – 2015-16 Do NAGS Academy athletes have to attend JAC as well? All U17 Tier 2 players will take part in NAGS Academy. They may attend JAC and are eligible for JAC competition, however their priority must be NAGS Academy (and AASE) and they must be cognisant of their lifestyle balance. Providing these players maintain attendance at NAGS Academy, they will be offered a place at JRPC the following year. U16 athletes who are selected for NAGS Further Assessment but are not involved in the NAGS final squad should attend JAC in order to be eligible for nomination for JRPC the following year. They may also attend NAGS Academy but their priority is with JAC. Will NAGS Academy athletes attend JRPC next year? Yes, NAGS Academy athletes will attend all 6 JRPC sessions next year. Will NAGS Athletes attend JRPC next year? Yes, as in previous years, athletes selected for the final U16 and U18 national age group training squads will attend the final three dates of JRPC. Dates for AASE Camps England Hockey expects athletes to be fully committed and attend all camps and sessions unless a prior arrangement is made. Every effort will be made to ensure that athletes can catch up on work during other camps however if an athlete misses more than one camp, there may be a small amount of portfolio work that Loughborough College will support them to complete away from the camps.
