2014 Conference Treasurer’s Report IN 2014, OUR MISSISSIPPI CONFERENCE, local churches and their gracious givers lived into our core value of Generosity. Even though the giving to our connectional ministries was down in 2014, our 1,054 locations of the Mississippi United Methodist Church practiced their desire to do mission and ministry beyond their four walls and the bounds of the annual conference.

The

Generosity and stewardship are alike but different. We are stewards of the earth. Stewardship is caring for those gifts that God has entrusted to us, gifts which others have passed down to us or gifts which we have earned through the talents God has bestowed upon us. A steward is a person who cares for things owned by someone else.

POWER

The very DNA of a United Methodist is working together with the resources God has shared with each one of us to serve those around us and in our parish, the world. By combining our resources, both financial and personal, we are able to do big ministrymuch larger than that of the sum of each individual contribution. That is because God multiplies our gifts.

LOVE

of We

Generosity is part of our character, what we really are deep down inside! Generosity describes the spiritual qualities of the givers that are derived from the generosity of God rather than the mission’s need for our money.

Neither generosity nor stewardship is superior to the other. There are differences in how each church puts them into practice. The wise use of both generosity and steward-

GENEROSITY

ship helps us reach people that are journeying along that faith road and those whom we are called to serve: the least, the last and the lost. God has loved us and given us a responsibility to use those resources demonstrating extravagant generosity and stewardship. In the following pages, we will honor those who have faithfully stepped up and given gracious gifts to the mission and ministry of our work together through the conference Mission Shares. We will also recognize those churches who have honored their pension obligations, so that those clergy who served God and each of us may have an adequate retirement. We will provide financial information about the use of those gracious gifts. In short, we will look at how the local churches of the Mississippi Annual Conference provided resources and where the stewardship of those gifts was utilized.

100% POWER OF WE CHURCHES

There are 547 churches that paid 100% of each and every line item of their Mission Shares and 100% of their Clergy Pension Benefit by December 31, 2014. This was accomplished by hard work on the part of each member of the local church. Regardless of the size of the gift or pension billing, it was done by the generosity and stewardship of that congregation. We give thanks for your example and your gifts.

2014 Conference Treasurers Report THE GIVING IN 2014 WAS NOT AS GENEROUS AS PREVIOUS

years for our connected mission and ministry call as an annual conference. While our collection rate for Clergy Pension Benefits increased, our giving rate to the apportioned Mission Shares did not. Here are some facts that I would like to highlight for you. 1. Our giving to Mission Shares decreased 1.68% to 80.22% when compared to 2013 or $45,176. 2. The Clergy Pension Benefit collection rate was 99.13% which is .9% more than 2013. 3. The 2014 Funding Plan was $20,694,044 which is made up of Mission Shares of $15,600,000 (up from 2013 by $254,021) and Clergy Pension Benefits billing of $5, 094,044 (down from 2013 by $952,118). The decreased pension benefit billing was generated by providing future reduced pension benefits to our active clergy, both full-time and less than full-time participants. The net decrease in the 2014 funding plan from 2013 was $698,097. 4. Mission Share gifts received totaled $12,514,731 and pension billing collections totaled $5,049,936 or a total to the funding plan of $17,564,667. 5. This gives a giving rate on the 2014 year of 84.88% which is 2.28% down from 2013. 6. Our second mile giving for 2014 was $458,047. These funds went to the recipients at 100%. 7. With all of these areas of giving, our Mississippi United Methodist churches gave $18,022,714 to mission and ministry. My challenge to the local churches of the annual conference is that in 2015 we will be able to increase our giving to our connectional mission and ministry calling. I pray that God leads us to greater generosity.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

MISSION SHARES RECEIVED & DISBURSED The following report gives you a picture of the funds given by the local churches and their disbursement. The first two groups show the funds that are called turnarounds. These are the Mission Shares that are distributed to each of the centers of ministry based on the gifts received

from the local churches. You will note that just because they are budgeted a certain amount, they are not guaranteed that actual dollar amount. The amount they receive is based on the generosity of the local churches of the Mississippi United Methodist. This report of ministry areas is broken down by conference mission and beyond the conference mission. The conference operating budget line items

represent those budgeted line items of Mission Shares that provides the work of the annual conference. You will note that some areas spent more than the Mission Shares received. These excess spending are because of fixed costs like salaries and contractual arrangements. The funding for those excess dollars comes from funds raised outside of the Mission Shares and if necessary, reserves.
