“Fueled and Aflame” 2013 Stewardship Theme

A Stewardship Thought

from the Trustees

Jesus was radical in His teaching about what is needed to maintain life. He repeatedly called for a simplification in lifestyle that is not driven by materialism. When the disciples responded to Christ’s call to follow, they abandoned everything. (Luke 5:11) Luke Gasho in “Creation Care: Keepers of the Earth”

Worthship/…and Miracles by Pastor Martin

John 20,27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand, and put it into My side; and be not unbelieving, but believing.” 28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” The miracle of Jesus’ resurrection was followed by worshipful confessions...after a period of doubting. Mark 9,22 ...if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!” 23 And Jesus said to him, “‘If You can!’ All things are possible to him who believes.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father cried out and began saying, “I do believe; help my unbelief.”

He became frightened, and beginning to sing, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:30-31

You could look at these men and might want to scold them for their unbelief. But that would not be a good idea. Jesus says in Revelation 3:16 “...because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.” This shows us that if we must doubt (for a time?) like Thomas, or like many others in the stories of the Bible or even all the way through church history, let’s do it right, not lukewarm. God’s existence cannot be doubted away. He knows us, everyone of us, and He knows what we need to take the next step in His Kingdom. We have a fighting chance to come out on the believing side, leaving doubts behind. Thomas in his story is no different from Peter walking on the water--who didn’t quite make it had it not been for Jesus’ outstretched hand. In an instant Thomas receives correction and encouragement, not a scolding, from His Master. Both Peter and Thomas go through doubts and denial before declaring “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God” and “My Lord and my God”, respectively.  There is no weakness in us worth hiding. Let’s attack it head-on! And let’s all join Peter, Thomas, and so many others in the “cloud of witnesses”. That should have consequences, of course. This is the moment when we need each other, as well. If and when we manage to be more open before each other, any darkness cannot survive the Light. Let’s join Peter in His famous declaration: Mt 16:15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Simon Peter answered and said, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

December 6th & 7th Please keep your calendars clear, whether you have an acting part in it or not, so you can be around, invite neighbors, help, etc.  This interactive dinner theatre is a great way to reach out to our community and bring them into our church for a fun evening of entertainment during the Christmas season.

Pastor’s Perspective: “Take My Yoke” Jesus spoke these words, “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No-one knows the Son except the Father, and no-one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:27-30, NIV. These were the theme verses for the Leadership Prayer and Planning Session. We discussed the fact that the Father has committed everything to Jesus. Jesus, therefore, is “in charge” [The Essential Jesus]. Jesus, in turn, invites us to enter “rest” by being yoked with him and learning from him. We also realized that when we are yoked with Jesus, we are also yoked with others who are yoked with him. As First Baptist Church, we are all yoked together with Jesus. To help the leaders understand this even more, we took rope and tied ourselves together with one person leading us as Jesus does. There were several thoughts as we reflected on the exercise. We learned from the experience that if we are not all going the same direction or not staying in step, forward progress slows or even stops. We understood that it is very important for all of us to be listening to Jesus and walking together. For the rest of the session we explored our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats together. From what we discovered we came to a sense that God wants us to focus on what I am calling “Organizing to Serve,” “ E n c o u r a g i n g Discipleship,” and “Modeling Friendship.” As I have been reflecting on these, I see how they fit into our Vision. IT WAS A GREAT PLANNING SESSION!!! THANK YOU, LEADERS, FOR YOUR POSITIVE PARTICIPATION! Congregation, as “yoke-fellows,” please be in prayer for the leaders as we come together in August to develop goals and a strategic plans around these three foci. Join me with great anticipation, knowing that we are yoked with Christ Jesus who can do what we think is impossible.✟

MISSIONS... My Name is Ingrid

An article about Ingrid is in the latest IM magazine.  Here is Ingrid's original story, but it really is a story that continues to be written as Ingrid continues to minister in Panama and new babies are born and named... This was the name my parents gave me when I was born, a Puerto Rican girl with a foreign name, who was born in 1950. I grew up with this name. I went to the mission field as a Baptist missionary with this name: “My name is Ingrid.” In 1985, I went to El Salvador for the first time as a volunteer missionary. At different times from 1985 to 1994, I did missionary work in El Salvador, and the people there began to get to know me and they called me Ingrid, the missionary.  They became my friends, but they also became my new Salvadoran family. The fraternal ties started to become established. So it was that there were a series of girls whose parents named them Ingrid. They would respond: “My name is Ingrid” and perhaps if you would ask them why this name, they would tell the story of my presence among them during those tumultuous years of war and post war in El Salvador.  The first Ingrid was born 24 years ago. Her name is Ingrid Francheska, followed by Ingrid Naomi, Ingrid Vanessa, and Ingrid Nancy - all from El Salvador. I have kept in touch with all of them. The first Ingrid lives in Los Angeles, CA where she has been living for more than 15 years now. The war forced her mother to leave El Salvador hoping for a safer life for her family.  In 2001, I began serving as a missionary in Changuinola, Bocas del Toro, Panama and once again the people there started naming their daughters, Ingrid. My missionary work has allowed me to become a part of many Panamanian families that now form part of my new Panamanian family.  The new children’s names are:  Ingrid Paola, Ingrid Madeline and the youngest one who is only a year old is named Ingrid Oderay. Absolutely, when you ask each one their name, they respond, “My name is Ingrid.”  I don’t know how many more have yet to be born, but for me it is a challenge so that they may become human beings who glorify God with their lives through my example of service to God that they can follow. I pray for each one of them daily. They just like me when asked their name, they say:  “My name is Ingrid.”
