M&M Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Lesson Plan

Grade Level & Subject Area: First Grade –Math/Computer Arkansas Framework: A.6.1.1, DAP.15.1.1, DAP.15.1.2, DAP.16.1.1 Objective: To teach the students how to use Microsoft Excel as a resource to record data and to view your results that you have recorded. Materials:              

10 packages of Plain Milk Chocolate M&M’s 10 packages of Peanut Butter M&M’s 10 packages of Peanut M&M’s 10 packages of Pretzel M&M’s My class computers (4 computers, one for each group) Color chart worksheets Coloring Pages Colors Labels Napkins Ziploc bags – (labeled Bag #1 and Bag #2 with the brand name on it too) Sharpie Marker Germ-X Smart Board

Procedure:         

Have everything organized for each group in group packets -(keep group packets with you and pass out throughout lesson, do not give at all one time to students) Have students clean hands before starting –(Germ-X) Break the class up into four groups of five –(Use name sticks) Explain what we will do today in this project Pass out napkins for students to count M&M’s on Pass out color chart worksheet for Plain Milk Chocolate M&M’s, 2 Ziploc bags, and packages of plain chocolate M&M’s to each group Let students record data about Plain Milk Chocolate M&M’s and put M&M’s in correct Ziploc bags Pass out color chart worksheet for Peanut M&M’s, 2 Ziploc bags, and packages of Peanut M&M’s to each group Let students record data about Peanut M&M’s and put M&M’s in correct Ziploc bags

Pass out color chart worksheet for Pretzel M&M’s, 2 Ziploc bags, and packages of Pretzel M&M’s to each group Let students record data about Pretzel M&M’s and put M&M’s in correct Ziploc bag Pass out color chart worksheet for Peanut Butter M&M’s, 2 Ziploc bags, and packages of Peanut Butter M&M’s to each group Let students record data about Peanut Butter M&M’s and put M&M’s in correct Ziploc bags After all M&M data is recorded by each group, review on Smart Board how to enter in data on Spreadsheet Then have 2 groups go at a time or have all 4 groups(if it is not to crowded) go to the computer center and put their data into the Excel Spreadsheet While the other groups are waiting to put their data into computers, have them color M&M coloring sheets till their turn to use the computer When all groups are finished, use smart board and have an Excel sheet of the whole classes results Talk about what the results are and what was the most popular color in all the different brands of M&M’s After lesson, it should be around snack time and each group will get to eat their M&M’s. I will have extra packages of M&M’s just in case I come into trouble with a group or some have been dropped on the floor

Assessment: To make sure the students understand the concept of recording data and entering it into the computer correctly. I will grade on how well the group counted each color, recorded it down on paper, and then put it onto the spreadsheet. I will have an helper also while I do this project to help monitor students accuracy and to help on the computers as well. A Brief Description of the Entire Lesson: This lesson plan could change to another type of candy due to any of the students having chocolate or peanut allergies. While students are at recess I will have everything organized for each group in group packets. I will keep each group packet with me and pass out each item to the group throughout lesson. This will create less of a mess and the students not getting confused with which brand of M&M to use. I will have the students’ clean their hands before starting this project. After that I will break the class up into four groups of five by using my name sticks to pick the groups fairly. After the students are sitting with their groups I will explain what we will do today in this project. I will then pass out napkins for students to count their M&M’s on. Then I will pass out the color chart worksheet for Plain Milk Chocolate M&M’s, 2 Ziploc bags, and packages of plain chocolate M&M’s to each group. I will let the students record data about Plain Milk Chocolate M&M’s and put M&M’s in correct Ziploc bags. Then I’ll pass out the color chart worksheet for Peanut M&M’s, 2 Ziploc bags, and packages of Peanut M&M’s to each group. Then I will tell the students to record data about Peanut M&M’s and put

M&M’s in correct Ziploc bags. After that I will pass out the color chart worksheet for Pretzel M&M’s, 2 Ziploc bags, and packages of Pretzel M&M’s to each group. Then students will record data about Pretzel M&M’s and put M&M’s in correct Ziploc bag. Then I will pass out the color chart worksheet for Peanut Butter M&M’s, 2 Ziploc bags, and packages of Peanut Butter M&M’s to each group. Then students will record data about Peanut Butter M&M’s and put M&M’s in correct Ziploc bags. After all M&M data is recorded by each group, I will review on Smart Board how to enter in data on Spreadsheet. Then I will have 2 groups go at a time or have all 4 groups (if it is not to crowded) go to the computer center and put their data into the Excel spreadsheet. To avoid any trouble, while the other groups are waiting to put their data into computers, I will have them color M&M coloring sheets or read a book until their turn to use the computer. When all groups are finished, use smart board and have an Excel sheet of the whole classes’ results on there. Then I’ll talk to the class about all of our results and other questions we can talk about. After the lesson, it should be around snack time and each group will get to eat their M&M’s. I will have extra packages of M&M’s just in case I come into trouble with a group or some have been dropped on the floor.
