MINERAL RESOURCES REVIEW 2014 CANADIAN INSTITUTE OF MINING, METALLURGY AND PETROLEUM NEWFOUNDLAND BRANCH st 61 ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND TRADE SHOW AND th 38 ANNUAL MINES BRANCH REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND November 5 - 8, 2014

Welcome The Newfoundland Branch of CIM and the Department of Natural Resources welcome delegates to its st

61 Annual conference. The theme of the meeting this year is “Celebrating 150 years of Research, Discovery and Development”. The year 1864 is of significance for geoscience and mining in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador was founded 150 years ago with Alexander Murray as the Provincial Geologist. The Tilt Cove Mine also opened in 1864 and was the first producing mine in the Province. Several presentations will look back at the subsequent 150 years culminating in numerous presentations on the current state of mining, mineral exploration and research. Again this year, the Service Providers Forum is a good addition to the trade show and technical displays. Delegates have the opportunity to hear short presentations on new products from the suppliers to the Province's mineral exploration and mining industries. A new feature for this event will be presentations on procurement by some of the major mining and processing companies based in the province. All technical sessions will again be held in the Harbourview Ballroom and the Trade Show and Core Shack fill the entire Avalon Ballroom, the Main and Crush lobbies and adjacent rooms. Presentations from Service Providers will be delivered in the Conception Bay Room at the end of the Crush Lobby. Registration: Registration for the conference will take place in the coat-check room, off the Crush Lobby. The registration desk will be open on Thursday, November 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., and on Friday, November 7, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Curlers are asked to register at the Conference Registration desk if they intend to participate in the Bonspiel at the Bally Haly Golf and Country Club.

Greetings from George Ogilvie, President, CIM Newfoundland Branch I am honoured, as President of the Newfoundland Branch of CIM, to welcome on behalf of the Executive, the many delegates who have taken time out of their busy schedules to attend the st 61 annual CIM Newfoundland Branch conference. Celebrating 150 years of Research, Discovery and Development is this year’s theme reflecting the anniversary of the Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador and the opening of the Tilt Cove Mine. This has been another challenging year for our industry as most commodity prices have either stagnated or fallen. However, we should take solace from the fact that the Newfoundland mining industry is celebrating 150 years of research, discovery and development and I have no doubts that our industry will be once again thriving in the near future. There are also many exciting projects in our province that are currently being developed that will be well positioned when the markets turn positive. I have no doubt that with the rich mineral diversity in our province many more promising discoveries will be made. Like the bear markets of the past, our industry always emerges stronger and prepared for the next bull market. The Mineral Resource Review 2014 is Atlantic Canada’s largest mineral industry Conference with over 700 delegates expected to register for this year’s event. The Conference provides an opportunity for government, industry and academia to come together, share ideas, learn and network with the goal of making our industry stronger and sustainable. This year’s event will feature short courses, a 3-day technical session with government and industry keynote speakers, core shack displays, prospectors tent, a trade show exhibition, a service providers forum, the NL Mines Branch poster session, and a public lecture. It is also pleasing to see so many students attending our Conference this year as both participants and volunteers. The students are the next generation of leaders, enablers, innovators and doers who will keep our industry at the forefront of this province's economic growth. This year’s technical sessions are some of the strongest to date with a wide array of subject matters with well qualified presenters from government, academia and industry and I urge you to take advantage of these highly informative sessions. The trade exhibitor’s show provides a great opportunity to see and talk about some of the latest innovations entering our industry that will make for a competitive advantage. In these tough times, innovation that allows for better productivity, improved safety and/or cost benefits can only be good. The prospectors tent and core shack also provide a good opportunity for those groups to showcase the mineral wealth of this province and the possible mines of the future. There are also numerous social events during this year’s conference which provide great opportunities to network and unwind after a busy day and week. Our annual gala dinner will be another well attended affair and is a great occasion to thank our partners for their continued commitment to our careers. Enjoy the conference and please do take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities and events to learn, explore and network with our industry colleagues and find out more about the rich mineral wealth and diversity of this truly great province.
