DAY ONE - SOCIAL PROGRAMME Thursday 18th February 2016 Please meet at the Grand Visconti Palace Hotel in the Reception area Milan renaissance In 1450, Francesco Sforza, mercenary captain at the service of the noble family of Visconti, attempted to restore the power of the city-states. Milan was the biggest and richest city in Italy, as well as a lively centre of culture and the arts. 10.00 – 12.00: Ca’ Granda (“Big House”) Ca’ Granda is one of the oldest hospitals in Europe. The elegant structure was designed by the Tuscan architect Antonio di Pietro Averulino - known as “Il Filarete”, who also worked on the Sforza Castle and the Duomo. During the visit we will meet Professor Paolo Galimberti, Chief Archivist. Professor Galimberti will show us some special documents, surgical instruments and pictures of the hospital. 12.00 – 14.00: Lunch Lunch will be right in the heart of the city, near the Duomo, Milan’s Cathedral and the most important gothic architectural work in Italy. We will also pass by La Scala, the Opera House. 14:00 – 16:00: Castello Sforzesco Sforza Castle is the remains of a 14th-century fortification. During this visit we are going to meet Professor Marzia Ponzone, Chief Archivist. She will show us some manuscripts from the Trivulzio Library collection amongst other things. 16:00 – 18:00: Free time 18:00: Evening in the Navigli district The Navigli are a system of canals and waterways whose construction took seven centuries (from XII to XIX century). They connect several Italian lakes and rivers: Lago Maggiore, Lago di Como, the Ticino River and the Po River, and also connect Milan with Switzerland, North Eastern and Western Europe and the sea. In recent years, Navigli has become a popular area for Milan socialites. Its timeless and lively atmosphere, with canals lined with sidewalk cafés and vintage shops, makes Navigli attractive for people of different age groups and backgrounds. We will have “Aperitivo”, which is a local ritual to go out for a pre-dinner drink. The drink name “Aperitivo” comes from the Latin, meaning “to open”. The aperitivo still plays an important role in Italian social life today and typically an aperitivo is accompanied by some finger food to start the evening.

Finally some safety points: Italy is a very attractive and pleasant country to visit all year round and many tourists share very special moments during their stay. However, as always there are always some points of safety for your attention: • Italy has a lot of pick-pockets so please be very careful to ensure your bags are closed and any valuable items are locked in the hotel safety box. Always keep an eye on your bags when sat in a café or restaurant especially when on the street/terrace. • As with all large cities, please take the same precautions for your own safety that you would in your own country, avoiding lonely places especially at night and try to go out with others. •

Most Italians don’t, but some do think traffic signs are a sort of suggestion, an invitation, therefore subject to the driver’s mood and/or kindness when crossing a street always remember to look left and right and left again! Most of the time, pedestrians seem NOT to have the right of way.
