AWTRS/MEPSA 2016 Joint Scientific Conference Melbourne, 7th-9th November

On behalf of the Australasian Wound and Tissue Repair Society (AWTRS) and the Molecular & Experimental Pathology Society of Australasia (MEPSA) we invite you to be part of our first ever joint meeting. The 5th AWTRS and 17th MEPSA joint conference will take place on 7-9th November 2016, immediately preceding the Australian Wound Management Association (AWMA) conference also being held at the Convention Centre here in Melbourne. The annual meetings of both AWTRS and MEPSA are a significant national forum for exchange of new data, and will provide an update on the progress and application of cutting edge materials and technologies for skin biology, tissue pathology, wound healing and repair. The organising committee has put together an exciting and comprehensive program that incorporates both basic and clinical research on tissue repair and regeneration as well as photobiology and skin cancer providing a valuable forum for scientists and clinicians to discuss the latest advances, tools and technologiesin this area. The conference will contain a mixture of oral and poster presentations, with prizes offered by both societies for the best oral and best poster presentation by our Early Career Researchers. The program includes all major aspects of wound healing, tissue repair, photobiology and experimental pathology including: - Wound repair - Tissue engineering - Inflammation

- Photobiology and Skin cancer - Vitamin D biology - Comparative immunology

International invited speakers include Professor Birgit Lane (Singapore), A/Prof (Toronto), Dr Richard Weller (Edinburgh) and Dr Matthew Hardman (Manchester).

Melbourne is a cosmopolitan city and along with its recently refurbished Convention Centre, offer an appealing venue to visiting delegates. Posters, exhibitions and refreshments are housed together for everyone’s benefit. We look forward to your support and to seeing you in November 2016. The AWTRS/MEPSA 2016 Organising committee A/Prof Pritinder Kaur, Curtin University Dr Rachael Murray, QLD University of Technology Prof Geoff Sussman, Monash University Dr Brooke Farrugia, University of New South Wales A/Prof Scott Byrne, University of Sydney

Prof Chris Jackson, University of Sydney Dr Lyn Wise, Otago University A/Prof Terry Piva, RMIT University A/Prof Ian Darby, RMIT University

INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS Associate Professor Boris Hinz, Laboratory of Tissue Repair and Regeneration University of Toronto, Canada A/Prof Boris Hinz runs the tissue repair and regeneration laboratory at University of Toronto. He has an outstanding track record in research into basic mechanisms of wound repair, in particular in fibroblast biology, their transformation into myofibroblasts and the role of growth factors and mechanical signalling in controlling fibroblast phenotype. Boris is also a board member and past president of the ETRS.

Dr Matthew Hardman, Lab Head/Senior Research Fellow The Healing Foundation Centre University of Manchester, UK Matthew Hardman heads a research group whose interests encompass understanding tissue regeneration and the causes of delayed wound healing in the elderly, a major area of unmet clinical need. His research utilises a combination of in vitro, ex vivo and preclinical in vivo models of tissue repair – current projects include investigating the contribution of changes in estrogen signalling, stem cells, cell adhesion, ECM, inflammation and the role of the microflora in delayed skin wound healing.

INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS Professor Birgit Lane Executive Director of the Institute of Medical Biology, A*STAR, and Executive Director (Scientific) of the Skin Research Institute of Singapore Prof Lane did her BSc and PhD degrees at University College London, followed by postdoctoral periods in London and at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories (New York). She ran a lab at ICRF (now CR UK) in London and later at ICRF Clare Hall Laboratories from 1985-90, then moved to the University of Dundee, where she held the Cox Chair of Anatomy and Cell Biology from 1991-2008. Moving to Singapore in 2005, she became Exec Director of A*STAR’s Centre for Medical Biology in 2006, and then founding Executive Director of the Institute of Medical Biology in 2007. She has published over 240 articles with over 14,000 citations and is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Dr Richard Weller Honorary NHS Consultant Dermatologist, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Senior Lecturer in Dermatology

Dr Weller's two main clinical and research interests are in eczema, and nitric oxide mediated interactions between sun exposure and health. His eczema interest is focussed on the roles of anti-microbial peptides, particularly beta-defensins on skin function, and on the immunological and clinical response of eczema patients to phototherapy. His more long standing interest in cutaneous nitric oxide has led to the identification of a novel UVA driven, nitrate derived NO production from the skin, which lowers BP and probably accounts for the cardiovascular benefits of sunlight exposure. His original work on NO production in the skin identified an anti-microbial action of skin surface produced nitric oxide.
