Martial Arts is not like other sports. No other sport taps into the fundamental human drive to test yourself, to conquer your limits and to defend yourself the way martial arts does. Martial Arts gives people an experience of their body mind and spirit at an incomparable level. Unfortunately, most martial art schools scare off most people by being unwelcoming, or too rigid. Students are forced into a dogmatic curriculum; Learning only what the instructor teaches—which was taught by his / her instructor— which was taught by his / her instructor…

The curriculum ends up being outdated, boring and not styled to the students preference, resulting in an unjust percentage of students who fail to achieve their goal due to lack of interest. Furthermore, achieving a black belt becomes inaccessible with the industry’s standards of conducting business: long term contracts, down payments, membership fees and belt promotion fees. The time has come for change. The time has come for a new martial art. The time has come for a martial art that works for everyone.

Student Resources BASICS

CALL OUTS

● Power Posture • Straight legs, feet shoulder length apart, hands behind back, standing tall, chin up, eyes forward • Why? Scientifically proven to increase confidence (TedX - Amy Cuddy)

Instructor: “How are you doing today?” Students: “Outstanding Sir/ Ma’am! How are you Sir/Ma’am?”

Focus Stance • Straight legs, feet together, hands straight down by sides, standing tall, chin up, eyes forward • What does focus mean? To pay attention. • How do you focus? Focus eyes, mind and body. ● Bow • From Focus Stance, bend at waist, keep back straight, keep hands at sides • Why do we bow? To show respect. • When do we bow/who do we bow to? Entering and exiting the school, entering or exiting the mat, before and after a performance, to your instructors, to your partners, to your parents. ● Defensive Stance • Dominate leg goes behind you, knees slightly bent, hands extend in front of your face with open fingers • Why? The vital center of your body is less exposed to attacks. ● Yes Sir/Yes Ma’am • A signal to your instructors that you are present and understand the instructions. ● Sitting like a Martial Artist • Feet crossed, hands on knees, back straight

I use common sense before selfdefense and never use my training abusively or offensively. 3. Should someone put me in danger, I am prepared to use my skills with intensity until I feel safe. 4. I have an I can do it attitude. I am dedicated, I am motivated, I am on a quest to be my best.

YAMA SALUTE

ACHIEVEMENT STRIPES

1. “Focus my energy.” Eyes look through the triangle of your hands, focusing your energy to accomplish your goals or tasks at hand.

Belt Striping: Students can earn colored stripes on their belt signifying special achievements in the Dojang.

2. “Protect my power.” Your fist represents all of your skills and strengths, but we keep it covered as to not show it off or use our skills for harm. 3. “Give my all.” Hands cover your heart as we think “anything worth doing is worth giving my all to.” 4. “Osu!” “Osu” is a Japanese word abbreviation of Oshi Shinobu that gives the meaning of perseverance. Oshi = “Push,” Shinobu = “To endure.” We declare “Osu!” (pronounced Oss!) as we pull our arms across our body reminding ourselves of the strength we have to endure and push through any challenge that comes our way.

WHITE: Earned when a student can tie their belt on properly by themselves. ORANGE: Earned by displaying proper Martial Arts School etiquette (saying hello to the instructors, bowing on and off the mat, etc.). YELLOW: Awarded to students for bringing a guest to class. GREEN: Earned by students who show excellent form in pushups, situps and squats or can kick above their head.

BLUE: Earned by students who can recite the entire Student Creed and Vow of Non Violence. BROWN: Earned by students who look and act like a black belt showing amazing focus, discipline, respect and dedication. RED: Earned by students who display comprehension and proper execution of techniques up to their belt level and are ready to graduate to the next level.

TESTING AND GRADUATIONS Many small goals put together = one large goal. The belt system is a wonderful way to teach this. Students will learn and focus on a 5 week cycle of curriculum. The last week of each cycle is “Red Tip Testing” week. When students come to class this week, they will be tested by their instructor on the material they have been learning during the current cycle. If the Instructor is satisfied with the students comprehension and execution of the curriculum, the student will earn a Red Tip on their belt, signifying they have passed their test and will graduate to the next level.

Graduation Ceremonies are on held on the Friday of Red Tip Testing Week (Thursday for Adults). Parents and spectators are encouraged to attend students’ Graduation Ceremony. Students who attend class on a consistent basis and practice at home should expect to advance each opportunity throughout the colored ranks. It is important to remember that students will perform differently at each level on their quest for the black belt and it is unreasonable to expect perfect technique from lower level students.

Storm Team

Our view on Self Defense

SPECIAL TEAM OF ROLE MODELS

Through training, we develop internal strength and self confidence that projects outwards to the world, communicating “I’m a nice person but the wrong person to mess with.” We also become more aware of our surroundings and have an increased sensitivity to threatening situations, decreasing the potential to ever have to put our skills to the test.

As students become Black Belt Candidates, they become eligible to join our Special Team of Role Models.

STORM Team students can be seen assistant teaching in classes as they gain leadership and responsibility skills.

We are always on the look-out for students who behave and act in-line with Yama’s spirit. If you have a passion for martial arts and want to help others, ask a staff member about how to join the STORM Team.

STORM Team members receive 1 special class per week where they train on teaching techniques and other advanced life skills.

Unfortunately, there is evil in the world. We make it our goal, through training in the martial arts, to increase our odds of survival, should an attack occur.

On the mat you may hear words like “Fight!” “Knock out” and “Choke.” These strong words are used because A: this is the reality of a self defense situation, and B: to paint a picture for the students of the type of intensity required to defend one’s self. Each and every time self defense, weapons or other combat styled material is taught, the students are reminded of Yama’s Vow of Non Violence — teaching us to respect our training and only use self defense in a last resort scenario.

Our students learn to be 100% against fighting unless they are forced to be 100% for fighting (to save their life.)
