Are we really living in the last days? More than 175 fulfilled prophecies The Biblical term “Last Days” does not involve the end of the world. Rather, what is meant by “Last Days” is the end of the long period between the First and Second Coming of Jesus Christ. According to the Bible, the “Last Days” will essentially be characterized by the Jews’ return from the worldwide Diaspora to the Land of their Forefathers (1882 until the present) and by the new founding of the State of Israel (1948), after a long period of interruption. In this book the author deals with more than 175 Biblical prophecies which all refer to the “Last Days.” These predictions have been demonstrably fulfilled in our era of world history: from 1882 until the present. From this clear proof can be provided that we are actually living in the “Last Days” and Jesus Christ will soon come as King and Judge of the world!

When the first anniversary of the original Passover was about to be observed, God reminded the nation about the importance of the continual celebration of this holy feast, and that it must be done in accordance with the strict word of God. A Passover lamb would be accepted by God only if sacrificed at the place and the time that He Himself had mandated.

Fredi Winkler Dear Friends of Israel, Although no major surprises were expected in Israel’s recent parliamentary elections, there actually turned out to be a few. Essentially, the distribution between the right and left is practically unchanged, now standing at 61 to 59 in favor of the right. Thanks to the merging of the Likud and Yisrael-Beitenu parties, the party of Benjamin Netanyahu came out strongest overall. They will still build the coalition government, although they must deal with some loss of votes. The Kadima party, which was the strongest in the last parliament, only hung onto two seats in the new parliament. The sudden rise and fall of political parties has become common in Israel, showing that a relatively large portion of the population is dissatisfied with traditional parties and seeks a change. The biggest winner was the young, dynamic Yair Lapid and his new party, Yesh Atid (There is a Future). They took 19 seats on this, their first attempt, thus becoming the second-strongest party in parliament. Lapid was previously a journalist who recently declared, “I’d never go into politics, like my father did.” His father was likewise a journalist who later went into politics, but his party disappeared before it ever accomplished anything. His primary goal at that time was to eliminate the privileges of the religious Jews. In spite of his reservations against a political calling, his son is now in politics and has similar goals as his father, but has the advantage of being able to learn from his father’s mistakes. Another young, dynamic politician who has risen in 4

NEWS FROM ISRAEL

Editor’s Note Israel’s political landscape is Naftali Bennett, the new chairman of the ultra-national Habayit Hayehudi (The Jewish Home) party, which gained several votes under his leadership and now has 12 seats. Their political views should make them a natural coalition partner with the Likud party and Netanyahu, but personal differences could cloud the relationship. In contrast, the personal friendship between Bennett and Lapid could lead to a partnership in spite of their political differences. They both seek greater social justice and more even-handed sharing of the burdens, which means, among other things, that they believe the religious Jews shouldn’t simply be excused from military service to study the Torah and even receive financial assistance on top of it. Furthermore, they believe that more religious Jews should be employed at regular jobs. These high-profile similarities might make the two allies, although there are points between them over which they disagree. Bennett’s party is predominantly a religious party, though one in which the members also serve in the military. There’s no doubt that these two politicians will continue to be a force in Israel’s future politics, particularly because they belong to the upcoming generation. Against the expectations, it will not be an easy task for Netanyahu to build a coalition government, with which he can more easily govern than previously. In spite of it all, there’s still hope that everything will work out for Israel, presuming the necessary changes can be realized, the security of the nation guaranteed, and an agreement of sorts can be made with the Palestinians (although that wasn’t directly a topic in the elections). In the assurance that God has the final word, even in political decisions, Shalom.

In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight is the LORD’s Passover.” When the first anniversary of the original Passover was about to be observed, God reminded the nation about the importance of the continual celebration of this holy feast, and that it must be done in accordance with the strict word of God. As with the original instructions, this included when the Passover lambs were to be sacrificed. Obviously, many conditions were 8

different for this second Passover, for the Hebrew nation was now in the wilderness of Sinai and was no longer enslaved in Egypt, as they had been during the previous year. Numbers 9:1-5 records the commands by Yahweh and the obedient response by the people: “Thus the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, Now, let the sons of Israel observe the Passover at its appointed time. On the fourteenth day of this month, at twilight [as before, literally in the Hebrew, ‘between the two evenings’], you shall observe it at its appointed time; you shall observe it according to all its statutes and according to all its ordinances. “So Moses told the sons of Israel to observe the Passover. And they observed the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai; according to all that the LORD had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did.” After the multiple sins of those who were physically redeemed out of Egypt, culminating with the evil report by the spies who were sent

As the wilderness generation’s children stood poised to enter the land that God had long promised them, the LORD gave an additional binding restriction regarding the place where the sacrifice was to be slain. In Deuteronomy 16:1-2 God decreed, “Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover to the LORD your God, for in the month of Abib the LORD your God brought you out of Egypt by night. And you shall sacrifice the Passover to the LORD your God from the flock and the herd, in the place where the LORD chooses to establish His name.” This first month, originally called Abib, ultimately took the name “Nisan.” In the Jewish way of reckoning—by repeated holy comVisit www.midnightcall.com

mand from God Himself—the Passover lambs were to be sacrificed on the fourteenth of Nisan/Abib. Before this, the nation had been in a transient mode; ultimately, in the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, He would lead Israel to a fixed point of His creation where the Passover lambs would be slain—as well as His own Unblemished Lamb—because that was “the place where the LORD chooses to establish His name” (Deut. 16:2). Deuteronomy 16:5-6 is very clear regarding why the nation as a whole would ultimately journey to Jerusalem to sacrifice their lambs. Although He did not at that time specify the city, God maintained authority to lead the nation where He chose, stating, “You are not allowed to sacrifice the Passover in any of your towns which the LORD your God is givMARCH 2013

ing you; but at the place where the LORD your God chooses to establish His name, you shall sacrifice the Passover in the evening at sunset, at the time that you came out of Egypt.” From Deuteronomy 16 up until the ultimate arrival of the new heavens and the new earth—even in the Kingdom with the advent of the King (Ezek. 45:21-25)—a Passover lamb would be accepted by God only if sacrificed at the place and the time that He Himself had mandated. God would reject any less sacrifice, as He had previously rejected Cain’s offering (Gen. 4:5). We should mark one important question recorded in Scripture that occurred at the observance of the second Passover. Events arose that caused people to question what those who were ceremonially unclean should do. Should they miss the Passover completely? Moses did not know the answer to this, so he sought the LORD’s counsel. In Numbers 9:6-12 God gave His command that would be binding on all such affected Jewish participants from that day forward: “But there were some men who were unclean because of [coming in contact with] the dead person, so 10

that they could not observe Passover on that day; so they came before Moses and Aaron on that day. And those men said to him, Though we are unclean because of the dead person, why are we restrained from presenting the offering of the LORD at its appointed time among the sons of Israel? “Moses therefore said to them, Wait, and I will listen to what the LORD will command concerning you. “Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, If any one of you or of your generations becomes unclean because of a dead person, or is on a distant journey, he may, however, observe the Passover to the LORD. In the second month on the fourteenth day at twilight, they shall observe it; they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. They shall leave none of it until morning, nor break a bone of it; according to all the statute of the Passover they shall observe it.” Those who were ceremonially contaminated could observe a Passover that God would accept, but it had to be observed exactly one month later and precisely as the

others were, at twilight. Scripture offers no additional information regarding what would happen if, for some reason, people had to miss the second Passover. From the silence of the account, it would seem that they would have to wait until the next Passover when the nation collectively celebrated it, namely, in the following spring on the 14th of Abib/Nisan. However, Numbers 9:13 warned those in the present and those in the future of how severely God viewed the ones who had the opportunity to celebrate the Passover in accordance with His commands, but who may have considered not observing it: “But the man who is clean and is not on a journey, and yet neglects to observe the Passover, that person shall then be cut off from his people, for he did not present the offering of the LORD at its appointed time. That man shall bear his sin.”

All God-fearing Jews would take this holy warning most seriously. The observance of the Passover by Israel gave a reliable indication of whether or not they were living in covenant obedience to their covenanted LORD. For instance, both Kings Hezekiah (2 Chron. 30) and Josiah (2 Chron. 35) reinstituted the Passover after Israel had long failed to observe it. Not that the Passover was the only means of obedience, nor did it mean that partaking of the Passover was equated with holiness and obedience to God, but if the Jewish nation, often because of wicked leadership, did not observe God’s Passover, they communally lived in direct disobedience to the commands of God— and as God plainly stated in Numbers 9:13, each one “shall bear his [own] sin.” This backdrop of the Passover helps to explain what many critics MARCH 2013

THE LESSON

Part 2

of the Bible have long pointed out that seems to be a great discrepancy in Scripture, namely, that Jesus sent James and John to sacrifice the Passover lamb so that He could partake of the Passover meal with His disciples (Luke 22:7-9). Yet, during the trial of Jesus, which occurred after Jesus had eaten the Passover with His disciples, after Gethsemane, after the initial arrest of Jesus, and after Peter’s denial, John 18:28 states, “They [the Jewish officials] led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium in order that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.” John 19:14 is even more confusing, for it refers to the day Jesus was crucified as “the day of preparation for the Passover,” something that Peter and John had already performed on the previous day when Jesus had beforehand partaken with His select disciples (Luke 22:7-20). Fortunately, there is a good answer for this: the Jews used two distinct ways of calculating when a day began (three ways, if you include Roman time, which sometimes Scripture uses). [Those who 12

are interested can read about this in The MacArthur Bible Commentary, p. 1420, or Robert Thomas and Stanley Gundry, A Harmony of the Gospels, pp. 321-22.] For the Galileans and the Pharisees, the day began at sunrise, and the new day began at the following sunrise. So for them, Thursday, Nisan 14 was from sunrise to sunrise. They would sacrifice the Passover lambs at the Temple from 3:00-5:00 PM (“between the twilights”) and eat the meal only hours later that same night. If one had asked them when they sacrificed their Passover lambs, they would have responded, “Why on the 14th of Nisan, of course, as Scripture repeatedly commands us.” By their way of reckoning, they would have been accurate and would have in no way violated the holy mandate of God. Almost all of those who lived in Jerusalem, which would have included the priests and Sadducees, used a sunset-to-sunset method of reckoning the days. So if one could have asked them on the day that Jesus was crucified what day it was, they would have answered it to be the Nisan 14—which began the previous sunset—and in order to be in compliance with the Torah,

C O V E R S T O RY Both groups thought they were correct in how they told time; both thought they honored God. the Passover lambs must be sacrificed by sunset that day. The actual Passover meal would be eaten immediately after sunset, which closed the old day and began the new. These different means of reckoning time were not like King Jeroboam, who had previously changed the God-ordained feast date that he had made “even in the month which he had devised in his own heart” (1 Kings 12:33). These people had not changed. Both groups thought they were correct in how they told time; both thought they honored God, and depending on how they reckoned when a new day began, both groups (according to their own standard of measurement) actually sacrificed the Passover lambs on Nisan 14 between 3:00-5:00 PM (“between the twilights”), in accordance with the prescribed dictates of Passover, even though they did this separated by twenty-four hours from each other. Numbers 9:6-13 also helps explain the fear for those who had arrested Jesus. They “did not enter into the Praetorium in order that they might not be defiled, but might

eat the Passover” (John 18:28). Many Jews of that time held to the presumption that abortions were commonly practiced within pagan Gentile homes. All fastidious holders of the Law could reason that they should not take the chance to enter within the home where they may—even unknowingly—come in contact with the dead fetus, and become ceremonially defiled according to Numbers 9:6-13, and consequently fail to qualify as a Passover participant. As confusing as this may sound to the modern reader, having the actual sacrificing of the lambs occur on two distinct days became almost a necessity for those involved with this event. The sheer volume of Passover lambs that would be slain, if all were done on the actual same day, would have (almost) clogged the Temple. MARCH 2013

13

THE LESSON

Part 2

However, regardless of on which of the two days the Passover was done, all of its preparations were the same as before; no part of the ceremony could be missing or deleted. The Passover meal was also identical regardless of the day on which it was eaten, and the Hallel would be included (Psalms 113–118) as part of the ceremony. The only difference was that the sacrifice of the lambs and the subsequent meals paralleled each other twenty-four hours apart. Scholars are not sure when the two different days for sacrificing the lambs officially began. They are not sure who initially authorized it. But scholars do have a general idea about what percentage of the Jewish population used the Galilean sunrise-to-sunrise reckoning of when a day began, and they estimate this to have been about 70% of the people, which included the Pharisees (and as we have seen, would likewise have included Jesus and His disciples). If this is possibly the case, then roughly two out of every three Jews sacrificed their lambs and observed the Passover meal on the same day that Jesus and His disciples did. The remaining third did theirs the next day. 14

NEWS FROM ISRAEL

Long before the birth of Jesus, the side-by-side days of sacrificing Passover lambs became the normal part of the Jewish Passover celebration in God’s chosen city of Jerusalem. How fitting that God’s own Passover Lamb, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29), would die at approximately 3:00 PM when the other Passover lambs at the Temple were about to be slain. Multiplied streams of divine symbolism and parallelisms could be deduced. Only, this day is different. The day when the true Lamb of God was sacrificed was unlike any previous Passover or any other day in history past or present. _________________ As we have seen in previous studies, the darkness covered the land from about noon until about 3:00 PM (Matt. 27:45; Mark 15:33; Luke 23:44). Luke added the additional detail of “the sun [being] obscured” (23:45)—or literally in the Greek, “the sun failing.” You can read more about this in “The Darkness” chapter of The Darkness and the Glory by this author. Think what pandemonium must have occurred once this totally unexpected darkness appeared and

C O V E R S T O RY resided for three hours, especially for the remaining third of the population who had prepared for and had expected to gather at God’s Temple and sacrifice their Passover lambs that day. Not only did they have no explanation for the reason the darkness was there in the first place, but also at that time they had no basis for knowing how long it would last. Especially for those who calculated the days from sunset to sunset and had not yet sacrificed their Passover lambs at the Temple, such astounding events would profoundly confuse them. These people told time daily by the sun, and yet such darkness had never happened before. They would not have seen the sun traveling its customary course to sunset, accompanied by the expected awe-inspiring sunset hues. The sun had been high in the sky, but then most unexpectedly it had become completely dark. Also, if literally in the Greek “the sun [was] failing” (Luke 23:45), it would certainly follow that the full moon of Passover was also hidden (if it could have been viewed at that time of the day), as were any subsequent stars. These who had always calculated the new day by the advent of sunset must Visit www.midnightcall.com

have thought, “What day is it? Did we miss the Passover? How could we possibly have missed it?” Also, if it were now the “next day,” then they all had missed the Godordained sacrificing of the Passover lambs, and by God’s Holy Law they would have to wait a month in order to participate in the next one. Furthermore, the extremely strong warning from God in Numbers 9:13 would weigh heavily on anyone who feared Yahweh: “But the man who is clean and is not on a journey, and yet neglects to observe the Passover, that person shall then be cut off from his people, for he did not present the offering of the LORD at its appointed time. That man shall bear his sin.” Could it be possible that this promised curse resided on them? Were they to be cut off from God’s people? Would they themselves bear the weight of their own sin? (We will conclude this message in the next issue.) “And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full” (Deuteronomy 6:10-11).

hen Israel returned to the Promised Land the first time, everything was prepared for them. All they had to do was obey the Lord, cross the Jordan River, enter the Promised Land, and take possession of it. Israel’s second return was initiated by Cyrus, king of Persia. Thus we read in Ezra 1:3-4, “Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem. And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.” This time, the Jews did not enter a prepared country,

but a devastated one. The prime objective of their return was to build the Temple in Jerusalem. Money was not an issue; the king would pay the bill. The Jews returned to Jerusalem and started to build the walls of the city. It wasn’t long before the enemies arose to oppose the Jews. They accused the Jews in a letter to the king, giving details about the building of the city. Actually, no mention is made of the building of the Temple. Based on chapter 4 verse 24, the enemies attained unintentional success, “Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem.” That must have been a devastating blow for the Jews, who had returned from exile with the full support of the king, aiming to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. Finally, two courageous men—Haggai and Zechariah—encouraged the people to do what they were supposed to do: build the Temple of the Lord. What was the result? “Let the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in his place. Moreover I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the river, forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered” (Ezra 6:7-8). The enemies of Israel had to pay taxes to be used for the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem. Today, we are witnessing Israel’s third and final return to the Promised Land. This time, nothing was prepared for them. They had to build their own dwellings, till the ground to grow food for the people, plant trees, and dig for water. At their first return from the land of Egypt, they entered into the land flowing with milk and honey. The second return was ordered, supported, and paid for by

the Gentile king. The third return was the most difficult one. No nation would offer a helping hand. About 600,000 Jews had arrived in the land of Israel, existing on meager resources and having virtually no weapons to defend themselves against the threat of the Arab nations, which had publically declared that if the Jews dared to proclaim their nation, it would not last but a few days. Even the British Navy made sure that no Jews or weapons would enter the land. If one analyzes these facts, then one must come to the conclusion that Israel’s existence, in spite of seemingly insurmountable odds, is nothing short of a miracle. Although Israel carries a heavy burden for defense, their achievement is mind-boggling. A recent article by Israel21c.org reports among other things: “When Israel was founded 64 years ago, it was a barren country with no natural resources, little water, and more than half of its land mass desert. The only thing the new country had going for it was the natural creativity of its people. More than six decades later, the Israelis have turned their country into an oasis of technology and innovation. With the most startups per capita worldwide, and the third highest number of patents per head, Israel has become one of the leading players in the world of high-tech innovation, attracting international giants to its shores. From health breakthroughs to technology, agriculture, the environment and the arts, the country’s innovations are transforming and enriching lives everywhere.” Based on Bible prophecy, this is only the beginning. Although the country celebrates its 65th birthday this year, it has not yet achieved its calling. What is Israel’s calling? “For thou art an holy people unto the LORD

thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth” (Deuteronomy 14:2). When will that promise be fulfilled? When Israel becomes “an holy people unto the Lord.” At this point in time, Israel has to fight for every centimeter of their territory, and in doing so, they are condemned by the entire world. But, the day will come, and it may not be too far off, when Israel will see Him whom they have pierced. Then God will create something new and unprecedented in human history: the whole nation shall be saved. The prophet Isaiah proclaims, “Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children” (Isaiah 66:8). That event will cause the fulfillment of their calling, “to be a peculiar people…above all the nations that are upon the earth.” This third and last return of the Jews to the Promised Land, as we have seen, is not encouraged by the nations of the world, but is wholeheartedly supported by another nation—the Church of Jesus Christ. Who are we? “A chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people…” (1 Peter 2:9). True born again Christians are Israel’s only friends; they understand that the return of the Jews to the land of Israel is progressive fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Our hearts rejoice to see Bible prophecy being made visible. That is another reason why we continuously pray for Israel and bless them with our financial gifts—to show that they are not alone. There is one nation, the Church of Jesus Christ, which stands for Israel unconditionally. MC

Palestinian Logo Avoids Israel’s Existence

Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority (PA) has published a picture of the official logo chosen by Fatah, the party cofounded by arch-terrorist Yasser Arafat and Mahmoud Abbas, for celebrations marking the movement’s 48th anniversary. The logo features various symbols, including a map of what should be Israel labeled only as ‘Palestine,’ the number 48, the Palestinian flag, and the slogan for the 48th anniversary,

18

NEWS FROM ISRAEL

‘The state and the victory.’ The Zionist Organization of America is strongly urging President Barack Obama, the European Union and the United Nations to condemn this outrage which reiterates the clear fact that Abbas and the Fatah/PA have no interest in peace with Israel, only its destruction. The new Fatah logo is consistent with official PA maps used in official documents, government offices and schools that do not acknowledge Israel’s existence and mark all of Israel as ‘Palestine.’ Other symbols central to Fatah ideology also appear in the logo, including a rifle and a key symbolizing the Palestinian claim of ownership to houses within Israel (‘New Fatah logo erases Israel,’ PMW bulletin, December 12, 2012). -www.thegatewaypundit.com 27 December 2012

Palestinians, as well as Arab League Nations, Iran and most Islamic countries, are all united in their determination that Palestine should replace Israel. The West does not agree with this, but rather insists that Israel should have the right to exist within the borders established in 1967. What does the Bible say? “Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon

and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever” (Jeremiah 31:3536). 4582 (For more on this

World’s Top Space Experts Gather in Israel

Fourteen heads of the world’s most important space agencies [attended the] Eighth Annual International Ilan Ramon Space Conference, jointly organized by the Israel Space Agency at the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Fischer Visit www.midnightcall.com

Institute for Air and Space Strategic Studies. The conference [dealt] with security challenges in space, space exploration, entrepreneurship and innovation in space, space policies, industry and space technologies, and science and technology at the service of space. The January 29-31 gathering in Herzliya also [marked] the 10th anniversary of the Columbia shuttle disaster and the death of the first Israeli astronaut, Ilan Ramon. “This year’s conference has MARCH 2013

19

reached a very distinguished international level,” Rona Ramon, Ilan’s widow, told Ynet. “It’s gratifying seeing all the commemoration activities after 10 years.” “Our success in bringing 14 leaders of the world’s top space agencies demonstrates the recognition in Israel’s growing presence in the space field,” said Prof. Isaac BenIsrael, chairman of the Israel Space Agency. Space experts will shuttle back to Israel in 2015 for the prestigious International Space Conference— the world’s largest gathering on space. More than 3,000 researchers and scientists are expected to attend that Jerusalem event. -israel21c.org 17 January 2013 The list of guests is impressive: American, European, Italian, French, Brazilian, Dutch, Ukrainian, Czech, Kazakhstani, Russian, Canadian, Norwegian, Danish, and Chinese. What is the purpose? Exploration of space. Sounds fantastic, but when compared with reality, it’s not even a drop in the ocean. Example: The speed of light is about 300,000 km per second. If

20

NEWS FROM ISRAEL

man would be able to travel the speed of light, it would take 4.2 years to reach the nearest star, and 25,000 years to arrive at the nearest galaxy. To travel across the Milky Way takes 100,000 light years. Today’s fastest mode of transportation is a jet, traveling at about 1,000 km an hour. It would take over 14, 24-hour days to cover the distance of one second of the speed of light. One does not need to be a scientist to realize instantly that reaching the stars is out of the question. So, why do these scientists continue to reach for the stars? We believe it has a spiritual reason, namely escape from the reality of Holy Scripture, “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Mankind rather believes in the lie. Man has dreamed and created science fiction, in which space travel from planet to planet has been propagated in books and films. The fact that they are drawn to Israel is not surprising either, because salvation is of the Jew— but so is judgment. The geographical place for the confrontation between the powers of darkness and light is the Valley of

Armageddon in the land of Israel. Besides, the Bible reveals the limitation of man’s knowledge relating to space, “Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? ...Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?” (Job 38:31, 33). 4587 (For more on Job, read The Remarkable

Holocaust Remembrance Day Now Official For the first time since its establishment, the European Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated on Jan. 27, 1945. The UN Union has adopted a Holocaust Remembrance Day for this date incorporated International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Jan. 27, into its official calendar. “I am delighted that, with our partners in the European Parliament, we have managed to place such an important event on the official EU calendar,” said EJC President Moshe Kantor. “Remembering the Holocaust is a massive undertaking, not least in a time when survivors are becoming fewer and antiSemitism and intolerance are rising.” While the European Jewish Congress has for the past few years commemorated the Remembrance Day with a ceremony at the European Parliament

News In Brief SAUDIS AID PA According to the Bethlehem-based Ma’an news agency, the PA's finance minister, Nabil Qassis, said that Saudi Arabia has pledged $100 million to the PA to ease the government's financial crisis. and with the involvement of a number of EU officials, this year it was formally placed on the EU calendar. “I am deeply touched that we are commemorating the International Holocaust Remembrance Day in the European Parliament once more, a location that is highly symbolic of peace and reconciliation between former arch-enemies,” Schulz said about the event. “The Holocaust must always be fresh in our minds and souls, in the conscience of humanity, and should serve as an incontrovertible warning for all time: Never again!” Jan. 27 was designated as a memorial day at the United Nations General Assembly in 2005, as it was the date on which Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz death camp in 1945. -www.virtualjerusalem.com 17 January 2013 It is quite an achievement to have the EU officially declare 27 January the Holocaust Remembrance Day. This day is also celebrated by the Russians, who defeated the German Army at Leningrad on that day in 1944. One year later, 27 January, Soviet forces liberated the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. The Holocaust was a contributing factor toward the establishment of Israel on 14 May 1948. We are reminded here of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children” (66:8). But the

birth of Israel is only a foreshadowing of that which is to come, namely, the fulfillment of that Scripture—salvation for all of Israel. 4588

The Return of the Lost Tribes

“This has been my peoples' dream for thousands of years,” says 18year-old Mirna Singsit upon her arrival.

Israel welcomed its 2,000th member of the Bnei Menashe community, when a flight carrying 53 of the tribe members from the state of Manipur in Northeast India touched down at Tel Aviv’s BenGurion Airport. The Bnei Menashe claim descent from one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, sent into exile for more than 27 centuries. The community continued to practice Judaism by observing the Sabbath and keeping kosher. The community today numbers around 7,000 and resides in India’s north-eastern border states of Visit www.midnightcall.com

Manipur and Mizoram. There are 1,725 Bnei Menashe currently in Israel. Most of the Bnei Menashe community reside in Acre and Migdal Haemek in the north of Israel. “I'm so very happy right now,” said an 18-year-old Mirna Singsit, who was presented with a certificate acknowledging her as the 2,000th Bnei Menashe Oleh. “Not only has this been my dream since I was born, but it has been my peoples’ dream for thousands of years.” After a five year hiatus, the Bnei Menashe aliya program was restarted after a unanimous decision by the Israeli cabinet last October. The aliya program was frozen in 2007 by the Olmert government after members of the cabinet, in particular interior minister Meir Sheetrit, opposed it. Immigrants came on five flights MARCH 2013

facilitated by Shavei Israel, a nonprofit organization with the aim of strengthening ties with Jewish descendants around the world. “This is an emotional day for all of us,” said Shavei Israel chairman Michael Freund. “But we will not rest until all the remaining Bnei Menashe still in India are able to make aliya as well.” -www.jpost.com 17 January 2013 The tribe Bnei Menashe claims to be descendants from the tribe of Menasseh. That has caused a debate in Israel because the Law of Return applies only to the Jews. However, because Bnei Menashe practices Judaism, this tribe qualifies for the benefit of the Return; subsequently, Israeli citizenship. Who are the Jews? First of all, the descendants of the tribe of Judah. Later, Benjamin was incorporated into the tribe of Judah. When Jacob blessed the twelve sons, he said the following in

Genesis 49:10, “The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.” While this speaks in the first place about the coming Messiah, it also speaks of the tribe of Judah. In the last book of the Bible, we read in Revelation 5:5, “And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.” The two sons of Joseph are mentioned in David’s prayer, “Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver” (Psalm 108:8). The Bnei Menashe have now come home—they are Jews in the land of the Jews. 4589 (Listen to the inspiring

are currently 158,000 Christians living in the country, representing 2 percent of the total population.

According to the report, approximately 80% of Christians in Israel are Arabs with the remainder mostly immigrants from the former Soviet Union who came to the country under the Law of Return, which provides for Israeli citizenship if a person has a Jewish grandparent. Most Christian Arabs live in northern Israel, and the cities with the largest Christian populations are Nazareth, with 22,400; Haifa with 14,400; Jerusalem with 11,700; and Shfaram with 9,400. The Christian population is growing, albeit at a slower rate than all other sectors. Christian population growth stands at 1.3%, compared to 1.8% for Jews and 2.5% for Muslims. The level of Christian education is notable, with 64% of Christian high school students earning a high school diploma, compared to 59% for Jewish Israelis and 48% for Muslims. The report noted that 10.2% of Arab Christians study for degrees in medical fields, compared to 4.6% of the general student population, while Arab Christians also had a higher rate of students studying for a medical degree than the rest of the population. In terms of age, 30.1% of all Christians in Israel are 19 and under—similar to the 33.5% of Jews, but significantly lower than the 48.7% for Muslims. -Jerusalem Post 26 December 2012, pg. 7 We must point out that the definition “Christian” does not necessarily mean Biblical Christianity. What is a concern to many Israelis is the growth of the Muslim population, because from a

mathematical point of view, they could supersede the Jewish population in the future. The Bible makes it clear that the land of Israel is given to the children of Jacob—twelve tribes of Israel. What will happen to those who are not of the stock of Israel? Here we find information taken from the prayer of Solomon at the dedication of the first temple: “Moreover concerning a stranger, that is not of thy people Israel, but cometh out of a far country for thy name’s sake; (For they shall hear of thy great name, and of thy strong hand, and of thy stretched out arm;) when he shall come and pray toward this house; Hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for: that all people of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee, as do thy people Israel; and that they may know that this house, which I have builded, is called by thy name” (1 Kings 8:41-43). 4593

IRAN

Fighter Jet Unveiled Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has unveiled the country’s newest fighter jet, which officials claim can evade radar. Ahmadinejad said at a ceremony broadcast on state TV that Qaher-313, or Dominant-313, showed Iran’s will to “capture peaks.” Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi says Qaher is “fully indigenous,” designed and built by Iranian aerospace experts. The domestically designed and devel-

NEWS FROM ISRAEL

oped Qaher-313 is similar to the US-built F/A-18, the report said. Photos released by the official IRNA news agency show Qaher as a single-seat jet, described as a fighter-bomber that can combat both other aircraft and ground targets. Ahmadinejad said the plane ranked among the most advanced in the world. He stressed that Iran’s military programs were solely for defensive deterrent purposes. Iran unveiled what it said was its first domestically manufactured fighter jet, called Azarakhsh or Lightning, in 2007. Saeqeh, or Thunder, was a follow up aircraft derived from Azarakhsh. Tehran has repeatedly claimed advances in military technologies in recent years but its claims cannot be independently verified. -www.haaretz.com 2 February 2013

What seems strange in this report is that Iran is doing everything in its power to publicly demonstrate their latest military products. Experts presume that this type of announcement is primarily due to Iran’s desperate fear of a possible Israeli air strike against their nuclear facilities. Iran’s most bitter enemy is Israel, although the Iranian authorities cannot produce a reasonable argument for their unbridled hate of Zionism. But, based on Bible prophecy, this will one day change and Iran will bless Israel just as they did almost 2,600 years ago, when King Cyrus of Persia gave order, “Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem” (Ezra 1:3). 4602

ow more than ever, Israel is being thrust into the spotlight of the world. That fact alone should cause even the skeptic to pay attention, to see that something else is going on today that never happened before. Why Israel? In our last issue, we published some information from the United Nations Security Council. We noted that from the 175 resolutions by the Security Council, only 4 were directed against the interest of Arab states, while 97 resolutions were against Israel. One would think that with the horrible atrocities committed in Syria and the ongoing slaughter and rebellion in many Arab League countries, this would cause the U.N. to issue resolutions condemning excessive violence. But, that is not what is happening. The overwhelming majority of news media from around the world continues to condemn Israel for doing something that all OCTOBER 2013

nations do: construct roads, build housing and shopping centers, with all the modern infrastructure required. But for Jews to construct housing in the land of Israel, they apparently need permission from all nations of the world. Right now, all countries agree wholeheartedly that Arab-Palestinians should be permitted to settle in Israeli territory, but not Jews. That is why Israel is different, and why our theme Why Israel Matters is vitally important—not just for Israel but for the United States and the rest of the world as well.
